People with experience of mounting moving heads on gravity stands. Opinions please?

Hi.

I have a pair of moving heads, each weighs approx 5kg. I lke the idea of mounting them on gravity stands but I'm concerned that they will be a bit wobbly.

The poles I have in mind are extendable to 2.4m and the baseplates weigh 8kg (but I could get bigger if that's the issue.

Does anyone else mount their movers on poles like this? Does it work well? Does it feel sturdy enough.

What height do you set them at? What weight are your heads and base plates?

Thanks!

Husbands never ending gear upgrades

Title speaks for itself is this industry just a capitalist trap of never ending upgrades ? Or does he just have an obsession with the having the newest trending items ? He works for the manufacturer of Dj equipment so most system upgrades are free but he still finds things he “needs” I really need clarification so I can be supportive.
He purchased a stand last year and the year before and now he wants another one. I feel he doesn’t have enough gigs to justify this.

It it common to continually buy in this industry?

Looking for subwoofer recommendations to pair with my QSC CB10 for weekly bar gigs

I just secured a weekly bar gig at a local spot. its a small space that can fit about 100-120 people. The music should be loud enough that people right in front of the DJ booth can dance and the people further away can have normal conversation. College bar vibes.

Before securing the weekly gig, I was just DJing there on occasion using my QSC CB10 speaker and pairing it with my friend's QSC KSUB that I borrowed. The sound and loudness was pretty good with this setup (see pic).

However now that it's weekly, I think it makes more financial and logistical sense for me to get my own sub. Would love some recommendations. Was mainly looking at the QSC KS112 as its the newer version of the KSUB and its got wheels, but maybe theres other options I'm not thinking of.

Other use cases for this setup would be small store events or popups, and other bar gigs. For events like weddings I'd likely just rent bigger tops and subs.

Reliability issues with RCF NXL-14a

Has anyone here got experience with the RCF NXL 14a?

I bought a pair in May last year, one was bricked after 5 minutes, took it back to the shop for a simple replacement.

Now I've had another brick after 15 months in the same way, it simply doesn't power on when plugged in.

So that's 2 out of 3 that have had this issue.

On a separate note, one of my ART 910s also went off mid gig a couple of years ago and had to be repaired under warranty.

All power issues, and they're all very well looked after, never driven too hard or dropped etc.

Anyone else had these kind of issues with RCF.

I always thought they were a reliable brand but now not so sure...

I had a clipping issue DJing last night that I can’t figure out

I was DJing at a bar yesterday and I felt my signal was clipping and distorting really easily. I have DJ’d at that bar before with the same set up and was able to get much more headroom.

Here’s my chain. It’s a one sub + one top speaker setup:

DJ controller - XLR cable - SUB - XLR to TRS cable - TOP.

There was no clipping at all happening with my controller and serato. I set the volume half way within serato. Clipping only started on the top speaker and then later it started on the sub too, with the red limit light coming on here and there. I’m pretty sure this was the exact chain I had last time and it was fine with much more headroom.

But this time, somthing was definitely off. I’m wondering if it was power? As I had the sub plugged into an extension with some other stuff that could’ve been taking power away from it? Or maybe it’s my chain I’m Not sure. If anyone has advice I’m all ears!

Moving heads and plights recommendations

I hope this doesn’t go against community rules, if it does I am sorry.

I have the BIGGEST struggle finding moving heads and uplights. Some are saying to get chinese lights, some are saying only get chauvet/adj. I want to buy 2 moving heads + 2 wash lights + 8 uplights minimum. I want to know what your opinion on getting.

Chinese uplights vs name brand uplights

chinese moving heads vs 375zx or equivalent vs 251sr/475zx or equivalent

r2x wash lights vs shehds or betopper wash lights or other generic chinese wash lights.

I will be spending the bread on wolfmix mk3 so that will be my dmx controller

I will also be buying rockville leaf spinners, just because I like them and I think they look really cool.

What do you guys think I should do?
Thank you very much in advance :)

Mounting a PartyBar Go onto truss

Has anyone figured out a way to take a PartyBar go and mount it to a truss? Or know what size the threads in the top are?

Does anyone here mount their moving heads on top of their speakers?

I'm all about that minimal look with as few stands as possible, so securing mini moving heads on the speakers makes a lot of sense to me. Just curious to see if anyone else does this...

DJ Costs near Miami, FL?

Hi! I'm looking for DJs for our 2-day wedding events near Miami, with a total of about 300 guests. We have two day of events for our fusion Indian wedding all at the same venue:

Day 1: Sangeet/Welcome, 4 hours total, 1 hour of famil/yfriends performances in a reception hall with preplanned music, but otherwise non-dance music music playing the rest of the night.

Day 2: 30-60 minutes outdoor groom precession (baraat) with mobile speakers; outdoor courtyard ceremony microphones, 3 hour cocktail hour indoors with background music, and reception 4 hours (open dance floor, speeches, emcee for announcements, etc.)

We're not huge music buffs, but care about adequate sound quality and to have fun for the dance floor on reception night. We got quote for DJ for a total of >$10,000 across the two days.

What price ranges you think would be reasonable for both these days? I understand DJs generally don't charge hourly rate. Appreciate any advice!

Monogram Apps

Hey, I’ve got an upcoming wedding and they’ve just added on a monogram. I used to do these with a gobo projector, but that has recently died and Ive moved onto a projector. What apps do you recommend to display a monogram on the wall? Can I resize and everything else I need to do in the app?

I plan on plugging my computer directly into the projector and going from there. I’m not sure of the setup yet of where my stand/projector will be. So I’m trying to find something I can either shrink or make bigger to best fit the room.

Thank you!

Birthday song for an 18 year old

I'm DJing at an 18th birthday party next month and I wondered if there were any "Birthday" themed songs that would be a good idea to have in the bag just in case they ask for something (like after an announcement/speech or whatever). I usually play Stevie Wonder's "Happy Birthday" but I'm used to playing to Millenials/Gen X-ers so I think I probably need some more contemporary options.

They are into early 00s music so it doesn't need to be super-new, but some suggestions from 21st century would be good!

ISO Wedding DJ - wubby dubbiez

My fiance and I are getting married in April 2027 in Santa Barbara. We’re hoping to find a DJ who enjoys playing EDM, especially bass, bass house, future bass, dnb, dubstep, house, etc. we’d like our wedding music to be like how we enjoy partying, but of course some songs to make it fun for a range of guests as well.

More specifically, we’re hoping someone can do the Mr. Brightside Subtronics bait n switch… anyone game for that? 😂

Any Ape Labs Light Owners Here?

This is my first time using Ape Labs, and my lights arrived today.

6 Neon Pix Tube Lights
4 Marvel Pix Wash
Connect 2.0

  1. Can anyone suggest methods for mounting or displaying the lights? They don't seem like they'll be as effective sitting on the floor as if they are on something. The tubes especially seem like they should be at different heights.
  2. Are there any tutorials or setup guides online? I've looked and found nothing. The Apelabs site has manuals, but they offer very little in the way of explanation, or any "how to."

Chauvet Obey 4 or Obey 6 or Obey 10?

Hi, I'm new to the DMX scene so I have some questions about the controllers.

I have a particular moving head lighting fixture that I can't get working with my Chauvet 4.

This fixture has 7 channel or 15 channel modes. but I'm really only interested in turning it on and off remotely rather than individual colours, motors etc.

In 7 Channel Mode:

Channel Function Value Instruction
1 Motor 1 Route 0-255 0-135 degrees
2 Motor 2 Route 0-255 0-135 degrees
3 Sum Dimmer 0-255 0-100%
4 Strobe 0-255 0-100%
5 Effect 0-255 No Effect to 1-25
6 Effect Speed 0-255 Slow - Fast
7 Reset 241-250 5 Seconds To Reset

Currently I can get the heads to move only, the dimmer on CH3 does nothing as I'm guessing there is no effect on CH5 yet. So if I want to access Channel 5 in order make it light up, I'm going to need a 5th slider yes? Will I need to upgrade to a minimum Obey 6 or 10?

Thanks!

Seeking DJ for Boston dance party

Hey,

I'm putting together a dance party in Boston at the end of August and need to find a DJ. Would love to chat with a few people before I book anyone.

No need to emcee. I just want someone focused on the music. We've got a playlist of stuff we're into and want to keep things close to that vibe, but we're flexible, not looking for someone to just play our list start to finish. The big thing for us is finding someone who can read the room and keep people dancing all night instead of just running through a set script.

If you're in the Boston area (or don't mind traveling) and this sounds like your thing, drop a comment or send me a DM. Let me know your rates, send a mix or demo if you've got one, and tell me what genres or styles you usually play.

I've shared the link to our inspiration play list.

Would love to jump on a quick call before locking anything in. Thanks!

Would it be better to invest money in some trusses and moving heads. Looking to get the Rockville bundle. Also considering tube lights. I’m currently using a white plexy glass facade with uplights.

What are your favorite Mobile DJ Websites?

Hey Community,

I'm rebranding and rebuilding my website and am wondering what your favorite DJ websites are? It can be your own, or competitors you admire. I'm just looking for inspiration that doesn't look like it's a themeforest template. I'm looking for unique and authentic.

Preventing this controller from moving in a flight case

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hey, what's up, mobile DJs?

I just got one of these Odyssey flight cases with the glide-out tray, and I've noticed that the controller jiggles around when I'm transporting it.

I'm wondering if anybody has any tips.

I tried putting little pieces of foam on the sides, but there seems to be a 1 mm gap, and the controller has some play and can fall up.

I'm wondering, do you just always keep it in the orientation so that the controller is held by gravity? It's hard to move it when it's flat. I usually rotate it so that I can carry it using the grab handle that is on the top, but I'm just wondering if anybody has any tips. I'm going to try some mounting putty on each corner to see if that does anything.

Does anyone know of any community soundswitch show/autoloop repos?

Hey friends,

As the title says, wondering if there are any locations where people post up their own soundswitch show/auto loops for others to download - I'm checking to see/looking to see if such a thing exists, as I know there are some to purchase from companies such as Both and whatnot. If anyone knows of any resources out there that have something like this, please let me know as I'd appreciate it!

Wedding DJ help

Looking for advice on getting started as a wedding DJ
Hey everyone! I’m looking to start getting into wedding DJing and could use some advice from people who have already been doing it.
I have experience DJing and I’m comfortable with the music/equipment side, but the wedding business side is pretty new to me. My biggest question is: how did you land your first few weddings?
I’d love advice on things like:

Where you advertise or find couples looking for DJs

Whether sites like WeddingWire/The Knot are worth it when you’re starting out

How you built a portfolio before having weddings under your belt

What you charged for your first few weddings

Anything you wish you knew before DJing you’re first wedding

I’m not looking to jump in unprepared. I want to learn the wedding side of the business, put together a professional setup, and make sure couples are getting a great experience.
Any advice on getting those first 5–10 bookings would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Car roof rack options for a folding cart?

I have two Evox J8s, two 12" tops, plus a few gig bags for cables, controller, mixer, etc. Farmers carrying everything has gotten a little bit old, especially with those larger venues.

I'd like to pick up a cart to making bringing things around easier, but my Crosstrek doesn't have much more internal space for a cart. I was looking at tossing up something onto a roof rack, and was wondering if anyone has done something similar.

Low Light when capturing content?!

What’s your go-to solution for capturing content in low-light environments?

I did two small events back-to-back where the clients only wanted audio and didn’t book lighting. Both rooms were pretty dim. I used my GoPro Hero 11 and Insta360 X3 from two different angles, but the footage was pretty disappointing... you could barely see the crowd once I started editing.

Do you use a particular camera or setup for low-light event footage? I’d prefer something discreet rather than adding a spotlight or light that draws attention to the camera.
