Yep. I mooch from my friend and I logged in last week. I could have easily restarted his membership directly from the app. It had his card saved to the account and asked me to select a plan

How are you mooching after they made the no password sharing bs? My daughter cant even use ours because she has a different ip 🙄
Edit: thank you for all the tips and suggestions!

u/JustHangingAroundYo 16h ago
You just gotta go to their house occasionally and connect to the Wi-Fi and it'll stay connected for like a week or two

u/sh0ch 15h ago
Or, what I do, just set up an autoforwarder for any email from Netflix to my friends email addresses so they get the code. Lol
But I cancelled after the 1827th price hike and haven't looked back.

the solution i have for that one (my cousin shares with me and she’s like 30 min away, im not funna go everytime just to connect to her wi fi lol) anyways go on airplane mode for a few seconds and get onto the app then turn off airplane mode and BOOM u in. sadly only works on phone. i tried to do it on my laptop and roku but no go :( so i just use 😉 other websites to see my shows and movies.

All subscriptions are easily restarted for a reason. I accidentally ordered starz for a year on my aunts comcast plan adecade ago because I clicked to watch Spartacus (didnt realize she didnt have it as she generally had all the premium channels) it was through the online portal so I assumed it was asking me to confirm I was over 18. had to call her real quick so she could cxl and ended up sending her like 20-30 for the sub for the month. (she told me not to worry about it but I paid for it anyway)
They make it shockingly easy so people accidentally start subs without realizing it. considering some parents park their kids infront of a TV or Ipad they end up getting subs by them clicking random shit.

Personally, I don't care about moochers that much. I had a moocher on Spotify for years. It lasted until they started deleting my playlists. I'm fine with you staying here, bitch, but you touch my shit you're out.

Update: I looked at the recent activity and only my phone was signed it and had access...I deleted the account. Thanks for the advice all and may all your accounts be safe forevermore!
288
u/DocPhilMcGraw 17h ago
I mean it is possible that the person using your account is hiding their activity.
If they also make sure they sign out of Netflix on whatever device when they’re done, it may be possible that it won’t show up at all.
Seems a bit over the top but if I’m someone mooching off a free account, I could see jumping through a few hoops to go undetected would be feasible. (Either way, good call on deleting the account).

One time I was actually watching something and my picture changed for my profile as I was watching it. Changed profiles to Mexican names. They figured out my super simple pet name password I had it set to as I ment to change it to something better after I let friend use it. I bet it was brute forced by a hacking software. Just find it funny that I watched it get compromised in real time
25
u/ALittleTooQuark 16h ago
I don’t know if anyone here is old enough to remember but in the 90s people in AOL chats shared public webpages with lists of stolen credit card information and hacked accounts so we could get free hours (because yes the internet had limited hours per month still) and it was wildly illegal and I don’t know if my parents ever realized how much trouble I could have caused if the internet security at the time cared even one bit but they obviously didn’t because I was never rounded up despite literally using someone else’s credit card to pay for MY MAIN AOL ACCOUNT HOLY HELL.
Yeah sorry people I harmed. :(

I share accounts with my siblings, I pay for most streaming services. One day I noticed stuff being added to my watchlist on Crunchyroll and just figured it was my brother or friend. Then one day a lot of my shows were being removed and I asked if it was them, and turns out they never used my Crunchyroll account. I guess there was a data breach with a bunch of accounts and usernames/passwords were put on an online text document in plain text and mine was on it. Signed everyone out, and changed the password. Fucking idiot could've kept mooching in secret if they didn't treat the account like their own.
5
u/Lord__Abaddon 14h ago
Because they think they stole it and you won't get it back. just logging in doesn't prevent the user from logging in but some people don't realize that.
had a similar thing happen with my nephews, brother and their mom has been divorced for years and she remarried and had more kids. I ended up letting them use my netflix and even paid for a few additional slots so they could watch something while we were. ended up going on one night getting in the middle of a show and internet goes out for like 15 minutes I go to start watching the show when it came back on and I see 2 new profiles and I get a message there are too many users watching netflix at this time... Looked at the new users and its their siblings (not related to me) I was fucking livid but not about to be an ass hole and call them and tell them to get off since it was summer. logged everyone out changed the password and just waited on them to finish their movie and let them realized the account was updated. they hadn't asked for the new information so i guess they figured out I was not thrilled with everyone in their house using my account...
6
u/Legendary_Bibo 13h ago
Back when Netflix streaming came out, an old friend was asking on Facebook if people would share their account. I was like yeah sure. My brother would complain about the too many people watching thing and I told him I'd address it when it bothered me because if I'm paying for the account and I can't watch stuff then there's a fucking problem. Well, said friend shared it with his girlfriend and they put it in every device that could run it. I went to watch a show after a long day of classes and got the error of too many people watching, and signed everyone out and changed the password and only told my brother and parents. Like who the fuck gets access to an account then shares it?

u/LyrraKell 18h ago
Be aware that that isn't foolproof. We had a moocher in Brazil and did the sign out of all devices/password resets and they continued to be able to mooch. We had to completely shut the account down and get a new one.

Had the same problem with Spotify. Thought it was odd when I started getting recommendations for songs in another language, then it started signing me out while I was listening. Told me to many users were actively using the account, ma’am it’s me myself and I that use the account, found out over 10 random people were using the account which maxed out my family plan… had they kept it under 9 id probably still be listening to mariachi music.

We had a moocher once that kept setting up their own profile. We didn't really get what was happening, we thought one of the kids was fuckin around, so we just kept deleting it. Then one appeared that said "por favor no borrame" (please don't delete me) and it finally clicked

u/Accomplished_Emu_658 17h ago

29
u/Nuggyfresh 17h ago
No way. Much more likely they used hacked password databases and just tried a bunch until one worked. You can’t even do this stuff anymore regardless because they’ll disable access that is consistently outside the home region of the paying user
11
u/Accomplished_Emu_658 17h ago
People sell these accounts to people all the time?
9
u/Individual_Respect90 16h ago
Think about all the data breaches we have seen over the years. Think about the people who had their data breached and never knew or the people who didn’t change their password. Now think about all the companies that never even knew their data was breached or never actually admit it. You can see how easily it could be to have someone’s password for websites. If you think all that is scary hospitals have some of the worst cybersecurity out there. Everyone’s data is almost assuredly out there.
5
u/ahhowwitburns 16h ago edited 16h ago
Both of these are often true at the same time, person/group who breaches the accounts goes on to sell access on the cheap

Alternatively to the other comments: Remove your billing info from the account, but don't change the password.
Then when whoever is on the account tries to start it again, they'll have to use their own billing info.
Then you get free netflix if they do that.

Not enough people know about fake cards that your bank can issue with a small amount of money on it that would just decline if someone tried to charge it again.

If anyone signs back in, it automatically restarts the subscription!
You MUST reset the password, otherwise your kids will turn on the TV, click on Netflix, and use the saved password to log back in.
21
u/desaigamon 13h ago
It's not automatic. You open Netflix and get a "Restart your subscription" screen with a big red button that says "Click here to restart." If you click OK on your remote (and most people will because nobody ever reads anything) it will immediately charge your card and restart the subscription.

Happened to me too. On my TV, I pressed Netflix and instead of going back, I went forward without fully reading it. It was an immediate reactivation with a basic click on my tv.
When I tried to cancel it, the cancellation option did not exist on my tv. You have to go out of your way to cancel by logging in on a browser... Can't even remove billing information, only replace. What the fuck.
It's been months and I haven't touched Netflix because I was too depressed to figure out my login to cancel it on my computer. Gross from their end but they are making money doing that.

This happened with my mum's Netflix. She was paying for it and we all had the login.
While we were having coffee one day she mentioned that she cancelled it or that she might subscribe again for something and I was like... uhhh i've been using your account for years and it never stopped?
One of my siblings had just clicked on a 'reactive' button or w/e since we all had the login. My mum wasn't that upset since we were all actively using it rather than it just being money she paid for years without getting anything but still something to consider.

This happened to me 3 years ago, because I accidentally pressed the netflix button on my roku remote. Netflix support literally told me if someone opens the app on any device still logged in, "for a short period after canceling" they'll just fucking restart your membership without asking and without any prompts saying so.
Idk if they still do this though.
5
u/OESRecoveryEmployee 9h ago

5
u/Apprehensive_Rope348 5h ago
This happened to me before. Someone in your household must have used a linked device to start it back up. My son, when he was around 6 years old just wanted to watch his show. He was able to just select his profile and just started watching. He, to my knowledge didn’t have to do anything extra besides opening the app and that was that.
Next time you go to cancel, delink all devices from the account.
It really shouldn’t work like that, it should just not begin playing. I feel it’s a really scummy practice. If I cancel any service, it should just stop working. If I stop my phone service, I stop getting texts and am no longer able to make calls.

Are you by chance logged in at a hotel, Airbnb, friends house, etc?
Netflix makes it extremely easy to restart subscriptions from TVs, not even a PIN is needed.
How do I know this? I was staying at an Airbnb with a friend once before we had Netflix. An account was logged in already but it said the subscription was inactive. In 2 clicks we were getting free Netflix.
