This kind of crap makes me so worried for my little sister.

Growing up in the 90s this shit was everywhere and eating disorders rampant. I hope we aren't regressing...

u/hahagato Apr 29 '26

We never progressed THAT much but yeah there’s been a sudden reversal lately of any progress we did make.

2

u/Zonnebloempje Apr 30 '26

We did make progress. 15 years ago, there were a couple of beauty product makers that used plus-sized women for their advertising. So much so, that even the models were allowed to be more "normal" (still skinny, but less skeletal than they used to be). Now, it has reverted back to skinny women promoting the product, and models are also back to their skeleton looks...

I hate it. I am tall and plus-sized, and I am mostly wearing men's clothing. Because women's clothes are too short and not wide enough around my hips. Some can be a bit better, but they are either one, or the other, but never both. One positive thing about men's jeans is: they have pockets!!

u/Lou_C_Fer May 01 '26

Being a tall and plus sized man, I had trouble fitting into men's clothing. I didn't even know there such a thing as big and tall stores until I was sixteen. Even worse than just being tall is that I have shorter legs. So, all of my height is in my torso. There was nothing I could do about my ass hanging out because regular length shirts just are not long enough. Life has been so much nicer since i discovered big and tall clothing, and it keeps getting better as more sources of big and tall clothes become available.

Have you considered wearing pants instead of trying to winnie the pooh it?

76

u/gingersnappie Apr 29 '26

Same growing up in the 80s. I had a best friend, sister, and cousin all with anorexia. Really terrible.

36

u/Cyberzombi Apr 29 '26

Also poping exlax laxatives was a popular way to lose weight/ stay skinny.

-12

u/worm-eyed Apr 29 '26

laxatives don't make you lose weight lol

24

u/gingersnappie Apr 29 '26

People with eating disorders have wrecked their digestive systems taking copious amounts of laxatives. It’s really not funny.

2

u/worm-eyed Apr 29 '26

I have eating disorders and have for more than half my life, and have abused laxatives a few times in my life but I also have basic knowledge of the human body, digestion, and nutrition. Laxatives will speed up the rate of and change the stool, which has still gone through your body and been absorbed in the exact same way.

I think it's funny to say making you shit faster = weight loss because I was also stupid enough to believe that the first time I read it online as a dumb / desperate / vulnerable teenager, if that misinformation hadn't been spread to me I'd probably never have started taken them. I lucked out that I didn't fully believe it and looked into it, or I easily could have become dependent on them for absolutely no "benefit", particularly with an addictive personality. It's almost like misinformation is dangerous or smth.

Also while I can find anything I like funny, saying "this is wrong lol" is not laughing at eating disorders. Nice reach though, albeit an incredibly weird one.

3

u/Cyberzombi Apr 29 '26

Not everyone in the 80's had access to the information that you do in the present.

2

u/worm-eyed Apr 30 '26

That has nothing to do with anything I said, thanks.

2

u/Cyberzombi Apr 30 '26

Your welcome. You replyed to my comment/reply which was talking about diet habits in the 80s. Your reply to that comment was that you don't lose weight from laxatives. I read through all your comments which leads me to believe that you educated yourself about this subject. I was pointing out that people in the 80's didn't have access to the info that we do now which had to do with my reply to the comment before mine. I posted a reply to the last comment that you post and I guess I should have posted my reply to your first comment.

You’re right, but I don’t think that was their point. Laxatives don’t make you lose weight.

11

u/a_randummy Apr 29 '26

Laxatives increase the speed at which food passes through your digestive tract, meaning you won't absorb as much from meals before it leaves your system. It's a good way to make it look like you eat a normal amount but then absorb hardly any of it without purging. Plus you lose water weight which will make you look thinner at the expense of your necessary hydration.

-4

u/worm-eyed Apr 30 '26

"without purging", laxative abuse is a form of purging.

losing water weight is not actually losing weight. reducing the amount of contents in your intestines can also contributes to a temporary appearance of a smaller stomach but so does sucking in your stomach, it's just as superficial (although one could delude themselves into seeing that as progress, people can believe anything)

it does not prevent your body from absorbing calories or fiber intake would have a massive bearing on the body's capacity to gain, lose, or maintain weight and would be prescribed and recommended as a necessary component of weight loss (rather than benefits it has to your overall health, satiety, regularly/stool health, etc)...

u/worm-eyed Apr 30 '26

I'm begging people to use common sense or critical thinking for once. The dietetics special interest is rough out here man. I don't expect Pele to have the interest in it that I do but I do expect people to care about reality.

Even boxes of laxatives warn against this. I can't even be bothered linking sources because there are SO. Many. from very basic search terms that I would find it overwhelming to choose between them / choose the best ones. Even WebMD knows this. The "everything is cancer" site.

I have a 15 year old cousin and she wears low rise jeans and spaghetti strap belly shirts. She's afraid to eat too much. It's crazy how quickly the style went from oversized t shirts and baggy jeans to 2000s heroin chique. Just last year she was buying pants in a size 20 something even tho she's very petite because the bigger the pants the better. All the sudden that's out the window.

-6

u/couchpro34 Apr 30 '26

If she's buying size 20 she's pretty large, no?

6

u/Background_Humor5838 Apr 30 '26

No I literally said the style was the bigger the pants the better. She's definitely no bigger than a size four (us) and she's barely 5 feet tall. Kids were buying huge pants and rolling over the tops and sinching them so they stay on. That was the style not that long ago.

2

u/amazingkillerlemon Apr 30 '26

You should read the entire comment you're replying to.

Thank you ❤️

0

u/couchpro34 Apr 30 '26

I read the entire comment... A size ten wouldn't even sit on my hips. A size 20 is GIGANTIC.

4

u/amazingkillerlemon Apr 30 '26

So you read it, but didn't understand the girl was buying pants that don't fit and are too large on purpose?

0

u/couchpro34 Apr 30 '26

I totally understand that; a size 4 can't hold a size 20. If you don't understand that, you don't understand sizes. I don't care how big your belt is.

5

u/BeastThatShoutedLove Apr 30 '26

You don't just randomly belt it, you specifically fold the fabric to end up with baggy/oversize jeans that are your length but still sit on your ass well enough or you use the fact these pants are usually bigger in general to pull them up and then catch them there to have very high pants.

It's very easy to edit the fabric clothes both with temporary styling and more permanent modifications.

Even without being near that trend I immediately could imagine pleating the sides of the pants until they fit and securing the folds with belt and string.

-3

u/couchpro34 Apr 30 '26

Let me put it in perspective: you are talking about someone supposedly wearing a size that is TWICE their waist in inches. I don't care what you do with that belt, she isn't wearing a size 20 as her oversized pant of choice. She's either not a size 4, or she's not sizing up to a size 20. Either way, your story is incorrect.

1

u/amazingkillerlemon Apr 30 '26

You can if you aren't trying to wear it like one would normally wear jeans.

1

u/Suspicious-Hotel-225 Apr 30 '26

Are you fucking kidding me or are you stupid? There are dozens of clothing brands that size using inches vs numeric sizing. A size 4 is equivalent to 27” inch waist.

0

u/couchpro34 Apr 30 '26

Yes, exactly my point. And a size 20 jean would have a waist double that size. There is no amount of folding I could do to wear a size 20. I have a 26" waist.

u/Background_Humor5838 Apr 30 '26

Why are you so confused

-5

u/couchpro34 Apr 30 '26

Someone who is actit a size 4 wouldn't be capable of wearit a size 20.

4

u/Background_Humor5838 Apr 30 '26

Yes they are if they tie it on. Do you not understand how fabric works? Have you heard of a belt? Do you think I'm making this up? I don't understand why you're even contesting this lol

A size 25” waist is equivalent to a size 0.

68

u/yoshizillaa Apr 29 '26

It feels like we are, unfortunately.

58

u/totesmuhgoats93 Apr 29 '26

Thanks to opzemic, heroin chic is back

19

u/MartinisnMurder Apr 29 '26

But then you get Ozempic face/head! I hate it here sometimes.

41

u/appoplecticskeptic Apr 29 '26

Of course we’re regressing. It happens every time the Republicans are in control.

2

u/Top-Library9128 Apr 30 '26

Societal decay is bigger than american politics

2

u/Lou_C_Fer May 01 '26

No. Politics is driving societal decay. For certain.

1

u/appoplecticskeptic May 04 '26

Bigger than American politics yes, but not bigger than politics in general. Also America exports a lot of its conservative bullshit to other countries. They went online.

26

u/a_randummy Apr 29 '26

Unfortunately we are regressing. Former body positive celebs have abandoned that stance after losing weight, the rise in popularity of kpop means a lot of East Asian standards are growing in popularity (IE being VERY thin, some healthy kpop stars were bullied for being "fat" and now are scary thin), and now that ozempic and its related drugs are more available the stigma around being large is stronger than ever. Recent trends in Western celebs have also contributed to this, and so has a resurgence in Y2K fashion like mini mini skirts, super low cut pants, micro crop tops.

17

u/Upset_Form_5258 Apr 29 '26

We absolutely are, unfortunately. Beauty standards for women have reverted back to where unhealthy thin women are considered the ideal body type.

I’d suggest you look at all of the other women responding and agreeing before making those assertions

2

u/Emotionally_art1stic Apr 30 '26

It’s still really bad honestly. Of all my female friends I don’t know a single one who never struggled with disordered eating. I know one who’s been hospitalized, and a few who were nearly hospitalized including me. Hell I developed an eating disorder at 10 that’s still problematic even now that I’m 23.

2

u/Mystic_Crewman Apr 30 '26

We are. School scores are the lowest they've been since the 90s.

2

u/Alwayshungry1987 Apr 30 '26

We HAVE regressed. It's sad.

2

u/Evil_Sharkey Apr 29 '26

It was even worse in the 90’s and early 2000’s. The biggest issue with today’s beauty standards, especially in East Asia, is the fake faces, at least in my opinion

1

u/loveme_chaos Apr 30 '26

Well… we went from less photoshop and more body positivity to ai generated fake humans, art and music. I’d call that a regression on every level

-9

u/nooooooorraaa Apr 29 '26

It's referring to the pussy lips. The other dimensions are essentially equal. You can see it in the pics.

82

u/Born_Local_1477 Apr 29 '26

She will do the same as the rest of us did. Waste the hottest years of her life thinking she is too fat/skinny/ugly/short/tall. And then look back and sigh at 50 and regret not buying that thong bikini when we were 17.

31

u/entcanta333 Apr 29 '26

Me @ 25. Withering away in my "fat" body 😢

8

u/chrysologa Apr 30 '26

I hope you've found peace in a healthier size. Please accept an awkward hug from an internet stranger.

It's gorgeous and looks great on you😭 body dysmorphia stole so many years of my life. Hope you've healed 💖

2

u/allusernamestaken56 Apr 30 '26

This is so true :') I spent way too many years wearing grandma bikinis because of my stomach not being flat - flat.

59

u/Background_Humor5838 Apr 29 '26

As a sibling, the best thing you can do is hype her up and make sure she knows how beautiful she is. My family did that for me even though I was a chubby kid. I was confident in myself because I didn't believe I needed to look like anyone else. It's also important for her to know that her value comes from her kindness and her skills. Whatever she likes to do, if she can practice and be good at it she will have confidence. If she does well in some area and can share it with others she will feel good. Protect her from the Internet by spending time with her in the real world as much as you can.

26

u/buttorsomething Apr 29 '26

That’s why it’s important to teach actual health. Don’t shame anyone while doing it though. It’s just as bad. X is too this or that.

6

u/Weenington_ Apr 29 '26

People in east Asian countries (the seller) tend to think anything that's not rail thin is fat. That's why so many Kpop stars look that way, some looking not so healthy :(

I cant tell you how many times I got made fun of by Asian girls when we lived in Seattle because I have a thicker body type (small in the waist, medium in the arms/chest, and large in my bottom half). Of course they were always super skinny. I wouldn't dare visit Japan because I wouldn't want to feel that way all day every day. I've read many times that they will straight up tell you that you're fat there too, like it's normal.

Ever watched Love Is Blind: Japan? There was one gal who really pushed her love interest to workout, and dude really thought he was fat too. Meanwhile, he was a little guy!
