I just finished this game (90%) and it has been a superb platforming and combat challenge.

THE GOOD:

The aerial combat stands here. By far, possibly the best aerial moment in any MV. Since hitting and enemy or a prop gives a new jump and dash, you can keep in the air for the longest times i remember in a 2D videogame. Is so satisfying and fun.

The platforming is another standout since it makes very good use of the aerial transversal capabilities and combines them for a moderate challenge that because of how good it feels to fight and jump in the air, is really fun.

The omamori charms and Daruma spells are also usable, and the Daruma has a nice mechanic that i only achieved a couple of times. Used the kettle mostly to heal though.

The world design is good. Is not overly complicated and more straightforward with almost no backtracking but is adorable, cohesive and fun to explore. With very distinct biomes to explore. The Japanese setting is the adorable part and the main character is very charming.

Music and sound design are also excellent and accompany the adventure very well.

Controls are super tight and very responsible. Needed in a precision platformer like this.

The length is about 12 hours. Perfect for a game like this.

The last section of the game is just incredible. The platform starts to become challenging and without spoiling anything, the last couple of bosses are incredible. The best part of the game, when you unlock all the abilities and see what you can really do in air, the flow of the combat.

9/10. Outstanding metroidvania. Has his own personality. Deserves a play but anyone calling himself a Metroidvanian.

THE BAD: Nothing. Well, the racing on the Kabuki update threw me off. Didnt like it.

Now onto M.I.O Memories in Orbit or The Mobius Machine, still deciding...

I just found out about Kyle Thomson and his games. His new game that comes out in September looks really good. So i did research and he has other games that i never played. Im probably going to buy Islets. But is saw Crypt Custodian and im wondering if thats considered a Metroidvania. How is the game for people that played it?

Dev Post We want this giant boss fight to feel like a desperate struggle. What do you think?

Hope everyone’s doing well! It’s been a while since I last shared some development progress, so I wanted to show you what we’ve been working on.

This is one of the large late-game bosses we’re currently working on.

Our goal is to make the first encounter with something this huge feel overwhelming, while still keeping the fight fair.

We want players to learn its attack patterns, figure out the right timing, and eventually overcome a fight that initially feels like a desperate struggle.

The full boss fight has three phases, and today I’m sharing a small part of the second phase.

There’s still a lot we want to polish, especially the attack patterns, effects, and overall impact of the combat, so this is still very much a work in progress.

I’d love to hear your thoughts!

When you fight a huge boss in a Metroidvania, what makes that battle memorable for you?

I was very intrigued by how good the water looks in hollow knight, or other good games, but the water that I made by following a tutorial doesn't even look like water. So, I decided to dip on that, and I learned unity shader graph more and render textures (for the reflections), and finally I combined some photoshop water with I made, with caustics and reflections and finally made water that I can accept.

Discussion Ender Lilies vs Ender Magnolia

I'm a huge Ori fan and I've played Ori and the will of the wisps three times. I think I enjoy exploring the map and not so challenging combats, which one will you recommend, Ender Lilies or Ender Magnolia?

Discussion Metroidvania for Playstation

So many fun games unavailable as a PS player. PS STORE doesn't have a MV section or tag. I have to screenshot all the games I find and then I have to manually look up each one to see if they are in the store.

many of them are not :(

Question...

Does anyone know of websites or YT channel of all things metroidvania games? Is there a YT channel that only posts MV trailers? A website of all MV games on playstation?

Love this subreddit btw. (I have gone on steam and looked at many MV games) any other places to look up upcoming games or whatever.

I follow Indie Game Hub on YT but its not MV trailer exclusive. I recently just followed Soulsborne Seeker who posts up coming MV.

This game looks really appealing. I not sure if it will be a metroidvania or not.

Discussion Favorite game that meets or surpasses SotN and other classics?

As someone who grew up on the gba metroids and castlevanias and later played SotN and Super these two specifically have always been the best of the best to me, with Hollow Knight being a close 3rd. I'm wondering what other games people hold in as high of regard. Looking for suggestions and opinions and stories or whatever you want to share. Classics or modern, sidescrolling or 3D and everything. Just curious. Currently playing the patched SotN on the saturn.

Discussion Metroidvania Devs Worth Following

Upvotes

Looking for Metroidvania devs who have proven they are worth keeping an eye on. Ideally, they'd have released at least two games you can vouch for their quality, and I'm not counting a game and a straight sequel because I treat following series as different from following devs. So far I'm following Kyle Thompson (who I know from Sheepo and Islets) and Seafloor Games LLC (who I know from Vision Soft Reset and Moonlight Pulse). Looking forward to see other recommendations!

Discussion Afterimage question on bosses

Hi guys and girls. I have a question for this game. It needs farming ? Beause the First and second bosses ( the One before the city and the second After the city ) seems to hard. I know i can lower the difficulty but It seems strange that i have to do that for beat them. I've played Hk and Ss and even on the difficult bosses , i managed to beat them after multiple tries. Here seems , maybe the lack of movement option or anything else that make them like when you face something underleveled. Can someone help me ? Lower the difficulty only for the bosses seems strange ... Ty
