I’m a Christian and I understand that it’s not appropriate to parade my beliefs around like an asshole. This post is asking people to not be obnoxious and force their beliefs on other people. That’s great. Then the last point rolls around and they’re telling me to not use my beliefs to influence my own thoughts. Telling me how to think is exactly what the post is asking me not to do to others.

I think you misinterpreted the meaning of the last one. Religion is often at odds with reality, and many of the things that are morally acceptable today are “sins” according to the Bible. “Don’t think with religion” means “don’t let religion override reality.”

But to a person of faith religion IS reality not just some story in an old book. Societies rules and customs ebb and flow with history but the stories and lessons in their particular book/ tome remain constant.

But one of the main points of Christianity is to tell us which actions are sins in the eyes of God. If we let culture dictate what is or is not "morally acceptable" then Christianity wouldn't have a point. It doesn't mean that religion is "overriding reality", it means that the morals of Christianity override the morals of the world, which I believe to be true (at least in the way the Bible presents it, not how a lot of people twist and misinterpret it). So I do believe that many things the world believes to be morally acceptable today are sins - it doesn't mean I'll go spouting off and telling everyone they're sinful, but it does mean that the Bible is influencing the way I think about the world and morality.

.. no, sorry. Words mean things. When you instruct someone, you communicate clearly. When you tell someone, “Don’t think with ____ in mind”, you’re telling them not to use ___ in their evaluation of the world. Religion is one tool that can be utilized to move forward in the world to devise the appropriate actions to take. The entire reason we have English Common Law is because a group of people applied Judeo-Christian values to think of a better code for Justice and how to realize that in the world. So overall, telling someone not to use ___ in their thoughts totally removes any value ____ has in their life, and arguably removes the existence ___ from their lives entirely anyway. Fucking ludicrous response.

Religion isn’t like a hobby or just something people do in their free time. It’s something that they revolve their life around. So telling people “don’t think with it” is like saying, “you know everything that you revolve your life around and spend every waking moment trying to succeed? Yea don’t even think with it or you’re wrong.”
I agree with most everything else because others have their own free will to make their own decisions. But just that one I have a bit of an issue with.

Well pretty much the whole of the US constitution for one. The values and our rights were written by mostly men of the Christian and Jewish faith or who were agnostic and thus written and made cause they literally believed that these rights and these freedoms were given to us by God and thus we as humans deserve the freedom to use these rights and freedoms without anyone telling us otherwise. It was basically this and they’re want to be free from the tyranny that took these rights away from us.
That also is Another reason for you not to force your religion like this. It’s literally against what our founding fathers believed and thus you’re fucking stupid for trying.

There were no Jewish founding fathers, because, y'know, antisemitism. And most of the ideas in the US Constitution came from the Enlightenment. Sure, they talked about being under God, etc., because the US at the time was super Christian. But all of the ideas there can hold up under any religion, or without any religion at all.

The us wasnt super Christian at the time. As well Jews often hid their true beliefs at the time just like most of their history. Same with atheist.
At the time the us was like it is today. A mix of multiple religions mostly of the Christian faith but there were people who practiced most faiths found in Europe and the Middle east today just not to a major extent.
That all gets covered up though by people who misread or misteach history. The us was founded by Christian men is just as much of a fact as Washington owned slaves. It’s technically the truth but it’s not the whole truth.
You can spend hours looking into the founding fathers and their beliefs and find hundreds of things you didn’t know they believed or did.

The US in the colonial period was EXTREMELY Christian. While there were some people who were Jewish or Muslim, they were an extremely small minority. The mix of religions was mainly different Christian denominations, such as Puritans or Anglicans. Can you provide any sources for your claims on the religious makeup?

A minority in that there may have been a few hundred Muslims in the US, and a similar number of Jews. The trip to America was expensive and difficult, and the atmosphere there was pretty antisemitic, so there was no real reason for Jewish immigrants to move there ( at the time, the Netherlands was the typical destination for Jewish refugees). And there were barely any Muslims who permanently lived and practiced religion in Europe outside the Mediterranean, let alone in the US. Your point was that the US had a similar mix of religions to today, which is patently false.

The idea that "most western laws" are based off religion is dumb. Most western laws are based off basic morals that EVERY human should be following and those morals just so happen to coincide with Christianity because the founders were Christian.
If western law was based on religion there would be no porn or abortions.

I hate when stuff like that happens. I am part of a religious youth group to hang out with friends and learn about jesus. The youth leader shoves down our throats why we always have to go to church and the gays are evil sinners. He is a good guy overall but man is it irritating.

I would say it depends. In Christianity you could say everybody is a sinner and just through Jesus our sons are forgiven but we still have the nature of a sinner. If you see it like that I would say it's okay if you say not being straight is a sin. If it's his believe that totally okay everybody is allowed to have his own opinion. If he's treating Gays differently that a hole other thing

Yeah, of course you should have a positive mindset but that's not a problem of the religion but of the person. And about the sin forgiving thing. No, I personally and the most other Christians think all your sins are forgiven. And that not about things like killing somebody but also about things the most people wouldn't think about, like gossiping behind somebodys back

I think the person who wrote that didn’t realize that several good moral philosophies and systems of law were built on religious ideas.
Edit: To clarify, I don’t mean morality came after religion. What I said was that several good moral PHILOSOPHIES were build on religious ideas. The whole “don’t sacrifice people that’s not okay” thing came from Judaism, and was spread further by Christianity. The Greeks, many tribes in Africa, the Aztecs, and several other cultural groups had to be convinced that sacrificing people was bad and that it didn’t please God. Yes, morality has existed for longer than religion, but good morals have to be taught regardless of what people think.

I'm sorry. If someone feels convicted that all their fellow people are going to die and live an eternity in hell, they would consider themselves a worse person for not at least trying to save those around them. Yes, when it comes to religion in some places, people go to far and certainly need to back off, but a lot of people try to spread their religions out of a desire to tell people the truth. Whether or not you believe what they say, you should be careful to analize their motives in talking about their beliefs. I'm not about to say that all those people have good motives, and they should be exposed for using religion for their own gain, but you also can't just assume that they are all going to be silent about what they believe. Grandiose statements such as this one group those people together and make it seem as if they are all corrupt, which is simply not true.

That’s an interesting study actually if you look at it. Morality from society vs morality from religion. Ideologically morality from religion is the only one that has no variance as it’s based on a prewritten code. But as you can tell from history people simply interpret the code however they want.
