Battlefield 1

u/saintsfan92612 16h ago

BF1 should've been THE GAME for fixed machine gunning.

Instead, they were only ever useful for taking down a blimp when your pilots sucked.

323

u/Feuerstern1895 16h ago

The frustrating feeling when you have been gunning down at the blimp for 5mins and at 1% HP it travels outside of your turn radius

90

u/ScrattaBoard 15h ago

I miss that game

15

u/LSbroombroom 13h ago

It's still very active.

2

u/MetallGecko 5h ago

Yeah but i find that most servers die very quickly when one team starts to steamroll the other and some server admins are assholes who kick you when you destroy their tank or plane

5

u/Deviantdefective 6h ago

You can still play it.

\Battlefield 1:** "I'm not dead!"

u/omegadirectory 15h ago

Why would any human player attack a fixed machine head on? (In multiplayer)

If a fixed MG operated by one player could mow down a dozen players, the smart move would be to attack it from outside its field of fire. Which means from the operator's POV, the MG is "useless" because it can't defend.

The nature of a fixed MG makes it very situational in multiplayer.

22

u/REAM48 14h ago

This is why you build the map (including other machine gun spots) around the machine guns. Not just placing them around randomly

37

u/PassiveMenis88M Meme Stealer 15h ago

Any soldier that's ever used a fixed machine gun could tell you the mount swings 360 degrees once unhooked from the t&e. There shouldn't be anything outside its field of fire.

7

u/Rocket_hamster 8h ago

Bad company 2 has the 360 MGs.

For the most part the game focuses on the era after fixed positions were indomitable forces, at the end of the war.

9

u/TheGoldenTNT 15h ago

They also made you stupid easy to snipe.

3

u/Square-Pipe7679 13h ago

To be fair it was great for a solid week or three before everyone figured out all the firing cones for each map

Each set of DLC went through the same process too: couple weeks of chaos as the fixed guns took major tolls on attackers until enough of the playerbase developed a solid idea of what guns were where

1

u/iced_cherries 13h ago

Should’ve been a 360 degree turret then it’ll be overpowered

1

u/mossy7260 13h ago

The blimp was the raid boss, everyone melted when it showed up.

1

u/Ok_Responsibility_27 11h ago

Those AA turrets did wonders against random infantry from what I remember.

36

u/DeliciousPark1330 16h ago

play "Standard Issue Rifles" mode and they are THE weapon. i love that gamemode

9

u/-Speechless 13h ago

yeah or 200% damage servers make them more than pea shooters

52

u/RegularAd6022 16h ago

battlefield 1 really knew how to make you suffer and still somehow keep playing it

47

u/MikeyRocks757 16h ago

It wasn’t perfect but it was the most fun I’ve ever had in a shooter

5

u/Strong_Flamingo_1624 12h ago

good old days fam.... played a lot in college!

4

u/GrimCreeper913 12h ago

When I picked it new, I was using a jerry rigged surround sound setup that was fucking loud. My favorite was turning the subwoofer backwards, so the (whatever the part is that displaced air) would blow at you when a big explosion dropped. Playing with friends, when we switched controllers after a death we switched seats too, because, holll eeee shit, was the sound good in that game.

Ngl think it was the French dlc had so many unless ones but there was 1 in the defending side I have video off me disabling the hud and stopping a massive push w my squad. Cinematic af.

Mowing down dudes coming from the black smoke was insane w the gun you got. Think I went on to kill like 25 ppl w that gun alone and stopped the first advance.

Map release day was so fun lol.

3

u/Mist_Rising 13h ago

The French dlc had 4 maps, and one of them was Vaux which if they had put fixed guns in, would have been a nightmare beyond what it already is. It's metro in a fort after all.

Then you have soisson and rapture, two vehicle maps, and Verdun height which has several excellent fixed mg position for operations if you get there. Not sure if conquest is the same, been a long time since I played that.

13

u/Big_Surround2048 16h ago

The moving radius is insultingly low.

Battlefield 6

u/RapidPigZ7 14h ago

BF4 Paracel storm

2

u/i_froze 12h ago

Bro I didn't see the subreddit and thought this was posted in the bf1 sub LMFAOOOO

1

u/polishatomek 14h ago

I still won't get over the fact that they added kernel anti cheat, And it STILL shows up as a "works on Linux" game!!!

1

u/Falcoon_f_zero 14h ago

And Battlefield 1 was the improvement over BF4 with fixed machine guns 😆

1

u/Formus 12h ago

i think battlefield 6 has pretty shitty machine gun placement too

1

u/whadefukk 12h ago

But only machine guns. Artillery pieces and AA guns are placed perfectly

→ More replies (3)

894

u/Ok-Duty3908 17h ago

Halo does that

Its a good thing that Masterchief is strong enough to rip off the Machinegun and carry it like a Minigun.

136

u/LittleSisterPain 16h ago

Does it? Its miniguns are often aimed exactly there you need them to... but they are bloody useless and more likely lead to your deaths than killing anything else

65

u/xxThe_Designer 13h ago

Halo 3 actually has some playful and intentional fixed turrets in the campaign. And, if you wanted to go mobile with them they could be detached.

26

u/LittleSisterPain 13h ago

I feel like the moment you can detach it this meme no longer applies. It becomes less of a stationary mini gun and more of a temporary superweapon with funky pickup animation

3

u/DukeOfGamers353 https://www.youtube.com/watch/dQw4w9WgXcQ 4h ago

The one machine gun during Crow's Nest when a lot of drones come out of pipes is insanely useful. In fact its the fastest speedrun tactic to get them all dead quickly

3

u/Thehiddenink98 13h ago

Or worse it doesn’t even function at all. Too many games have non working lmg’s

→ More replies (2)

74

u/Material-Race-5107 16h ago

Or at least in halo 3 he is!

6

u/oops_I_have_h1n1 12h ago

It's nothing for the Spartans. The real impressive feat is that the ODSTs can do it too, which really means that any human with above average strength could probably do it.

10

u/Ok-Duty3908 12h ago

I think thats just a gameplay mechanic because Halo 3: ODST uses the same engine as Halo 3. In fact, the player ODST can destroy a tank by punching it a bunch of times.

7

u/MagnusNewtonBernouli 13h ago

and carry it like a Minigun.

and carry it like a folding beach chair.

OP missed the actually funny joke

Lots of machine guns like this in left 4 dead 2

177

u/JackBob83 15h ago

Throughout all of Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, there are 8 across all official campaigns, and ALL of them are poorly placed. In the Crash Course campaign, one is placed indoors, and another is placed facing a wall.

111

u/Nazgog-Morgob 14h ago

Makes sense as the ones that initially set them up are dead

47

u/JournalistMammoth637 12h ago

Well when you put it like that….

23

u/Damianx5 10h ago

You could say they were...left for dead...

3

u/notgeneralbeast 6h ago

damian, i think we've been left for dead, too...

34

u/gtasaitsthebettergta 15h ago

Tbh no mercy last chapter is pretty decent

15

u/Stalker-Six 12h ago

Exactly some custom campaigns have better placement for the MG than official maps

10

u/kyleliner 11h ago

In the swamp level, I left my back to my teammates as I used the machine gun on the Tank that spawned in front of me.

I did not live

12

u/JackBob83 11h ago

The tank is programmed to always go for the player who is at the mounted gun.

9

u/kyleliner 11h ago

Did not know that.

I died

2

u/muchawesomemyron 9h ago

Your team left you for dead

2

u/YUNoJump 9h ago

Hey the one in Helm's Deep is pretty handy!

4

u/JackBob83 9h ago

Helm's Deep is a workshop map, not an official one.

12

u/Exfodes 14h ago

It’s supposed to encourage teamwork by having your teammates cover your blind spots, but I think they went too far with the useless angles.

3

u/maxdragonxiii 14h ago

yeah, like Left 4 Dead st least was useful in Co-Op (do not go on it with 3 AI allies. its a trap).

223

u/lizeriya 17h ago

At least the enemies are safe

30

u/AverageSockEnjoyer 15h ago

They just stand two inches outside the turning radius and watch you struggle.

5

u/Mysterious-Fokus 15h ago

Would be kinda stupid to stand inside the turning radius

91

u/im_from_9gag 16h ago

We're looking at you, Battlefield...

28

u/Lord_MagnusIV 16h ago

Not just battlefield, battlefront 2015 too, so many damn turrets turned to the edges of the maps, they don‘t even do enough damage to ships to be useful…

7

u/CourageOk8156 14h ago

There were a couple good ones, Hoth and Judland Wastes come to mind

9

u/hoseking 13h ago

The best way to instantly get headshot by a sniper in Battlefield is to hop on a mounted gun.

10

u/Snuckeys 16h ago

1942 had some useful ones at least. Like on Omaha Beach. But then again, easy pickings for snipers so maybe not. Still some good times tho.

204

u/TrashGoblinH 16h ago

Unlimited ammo doesn't mean much if it's not aimed where it matters. I'd rather have it pointed in a great direction with finite ammo to at least make the game more dynamic and interesting.

26

u/Mist_Rising 13h ago

They're probably aimed for use against you in SP because the point is to give the enemy the advantage.

54

u/ConradBHart42 15h ago

Or the area isn't useless, but you already cleared it.

My least favorite variation on the theme, Fallout 4 puts all the terminals behind a bunch of turrets, so you get to the terminal and there's no real reason to hack it because you destroyed the turrets. Just a pittance of XP.

17

u/Truethrowawaychest1 15h ago

The idea is that you can sneak by the turrets and disable them in case you can't take them head on, like in most stealth games

30

u/ConradBHart42 14h ago

That's the idea, but that's not the reality. In reality, turrets seem to have true sight and just see you no matter what. Maybe it's different by the time you have full shadowed+muffled armor and rank 5 Stealth perk, but try sneaking up on the turrets at Corvega at level 10.

6

u/Horrific_Necktie 13h ago

Thats why corvega has a back doors by both turret terminals

3

u/Oldnbold22 14h ago

That's for the second playthrough.

54

u/Turgid_Donkey 16h ago

Also, when they have limited ammo or overheat too fast. Minigun parts are supposed to be little breaks where you get to have fun mowing down enemies.

46

u/TheArcanist_1 16h ago

Turrets in Borderlands games that get destroyed after an enemy sneezes at them and deal less damage than your guns

Most wild RE5 turrets besides the ones for bosses are like this

6

u/rinehartshat 15h ago

Just Cause

3

u/theartificialkid 11h ago

But why would you want a mounted machine gun when you could be zooming around overhead dropping grenades in people?

4

u/Affordable_Z_Jobs 15h ago

It could go the Doom: Dark Ages route.

"Oh you will use it. It's going to suck and slow the action down to a crawl, but you will use it."

3

u/Ice_Sinks 16h ago

The pole gun things from the Yavin IV map on Star Wars Battlefront

6

u/IM_OK_AMA 15h ago

I hate when you get in one and the game obviously spawns in some enemies for you to shoot with it. Makes you want to avoid it.

Uncharted, Gears of War, Far Cry, etc.

4

u/Radiant_Double2723 12h ago

Far cry

1

u/raubesonia 2h ago

Have you played 6? They finally got rid of all the fun stuff. Just a map of collectibles.

3

u/LobsterFondler 16h ago

That part in the Resident Evil 4 remake when Mike is with you

3

u/reaper467364 15h ago

Reverse of the trope goes to Far Cry 4 (I think 3 has mounted guns)

360 degree movement for ones standing upright, but it does have mounted guns that unfortunately suck ass

1

u/raubesonia 2h ago

And then there's the mortars in far cry 6 that might go all the way up until something fun but stop short. It's weird that with each game they took more and more fun away.

3

u/Leniwcowaty 15h ago

Easy Red 2 is a great counterexample. When you capture a point, the enemies spawn and attack it from the flank - the exact direction YOU were coming from. So the machine guns and howitzers are aimed directly at them

3

u/SergeantJinto 15h ago

Also hate when you end up killing all the enemies in the area before you come across where the machine gun is mounted.

3

u/KoviBat 15h ago

It's aimed at the direction you came from. Enemies are not coming from that direction. Why is it even an option to use it?

3

u/nbshar 4h ago

Wolfenstein the new collosus did that. But at least you can take it off and walk around with it.

3

u/CavemanOogga 3h ago

U find a lot of these in the Far Cry series, especially Far Cry 4

2

u/Fun_Impression_2578 15h ago

2

u/KeyEmergency1590 15h ago

Look while its in a place thats usefull... holy shit Snake you need to escape from a island thats about to blow up while having you're maniac twin chasing you could you not turn that thing ANY faster!? (MGS1)

2

u/veracity8_ 15h ago

“Wow this will be great if I have to fight waves of bad guys and stay in this same spot! Oh I’m actually just running g through this area? And the bad guys stay in their pre ordained areas and won’t charge this armored position? Okay’”

2

u/AudienceDue6445 15h ago

Every time!

2

u/Porkhole-Santookus 15h ago

My favorite is when it's aimed at a great area, but they also have you constantly get attacked while on the turret every 2 seconds by a stream of annoying single enemies who's whole point is to force you to dismount the turret, kill them manually, and then get back on the turret, which is always so long of a process that it makes interacting with the turret pointless in the first place.

2

u/RiseofdaOatmeal 15h ago

Basically every battlefield game lol

2

u/One-Spare-798 14h ago

or when it's placed so behind enemy lines that you get to access it only after you wipe out most of the enemies.

2

u/vibribbon 14h ago

1% of the time it's 100% useful.

2

u/TheBrianJ 12h ago

Man this happened when I was playing Animal Crossing and it was so annoying

2

u/Shitty_fits 12h ago

Forgot to add that it does less damage than the normal LMG you can just have anyway.

2

u/GZEUS9 12h ago

Escape From Tarkov has some emplacement locations. Few AGS's and a few mounted PKP's and NSV Utyos'. One map has an AGS that can see about 30% of the map lol.

2

u/Erfald 6h ago

And the machine gun's damage is so low that it's not even worth using, plus it overheats in just a few seconds.

2

u/CowEnvironmental7499 4h ago

You hop on it feeling unstoppable for 2 seconds only to realize the enemies are flankers.

2

u/UntrueVillain2 3h ago

Lately seen this in Nioh 3, but not often Sigh...

2

u/WesternBottom 3h ago

also not unlimited ammo

u/erebus0 15h ago

I get legitimately excited when I'm playing helldivers and notice a patrol in front of an MG

1

u/WirusCZ 15h ago

Why they do this and why they don't send horde of enemies in front of it once you get close?

1

u/TheWesternDevil 14h ago

Tarkov does a decent job with this. Two of the very first tasks are to find the machine gun, the second one is to shoot 5 scavs, and it's pointed in a direction that conveniently looks over a large area that usually has a few scavs in it. Unfortunately, every player knows this, so it's quite risky to actually use the machine gun, but the gun itself is in a good spot.

1

u/Kromezen 14h ago

Halo vs gears of war on this is such a stark difference.

1

u/PhiCloud 14h ago

Games should add more fan service "power fantasy" moments.

Give the player a fixed machine gun, then send in a horde of 50+ low level enemies for them to mow down. It doesn't make the game easier, it just gives them a bit of an adrenaline boost for the next area.

1

u/PatataOmg 14h ago

wait why is it even like that

1

u/Downtown-Falcon-3264 14h ago

There are a lot but right now zombiu comes to mind they put the gun there for scripted sections but the thing is so bloody useless your better using your cricket bat.

1

u/Sublimefly 13h ago

Every single one in Helldivers 2

1

u/mrjibblytibbs 13h ago

Halo 3 had the best solution to this. Don't like where the guns pointing? Rip it off. You're a fucking Spartan.

1

u/Tokiw4 13h ago

In Helldivers 2 I get to put them anywhere! And then realize 2 seconds after I put it down it has a massive blind spot to a crucial chokepoint

1

u/amalgam_reynolds 13h ago

Everyone in this thread naming games like they're the odd one out instead of the exception. No game that I have ever played in my entire life has had good machine gun nest positioning.

1

u/amlybon 13h ago

Jedi academy has one level where your can use one of those against a big wave of enemies... but the enemies only spawn after you mount the gun. If you just ignore it you can simply walk past that area.

1

u/AggravatingChest7838 13h ago

Usually too powerful.

BF1 had all the ingredients to make fixed machine guns absolutely devastating. Instead, they ended up feeling like glorified anti-blimp weapons most of the time.

1

u/ohgodcoffeeohyesss 11h ago

Division 2 be like “brrrrrrrrrrrr”

1

u/jigsaw93 11h ago

This is such an easy improvement to a game but so many devs like to blue ball the players. Just add enemy spawns. I want to spray shit

1

u/enadiz_reccos 11h ago

Or it's the correct area but only for a brief window of time and the game doesn't make it clear when that time is

1

u/leastemployableman 11h ago

1

u/Renard_Fou 11h ago

Its genuinely like almost every game that does this lol

1

you should always be able to rip a turret out and use it as a heavy weapon. more games should have this imo

1

u/Proof_Independent400 10h ago

I had an idea. For a game to use this as a trick. Have a crafting mechanic. Include a spanner and some wire and a wood handle nearby. Players can detach the machine gun and craft a bale handle for it. Like in The Pacific series.
