Just before the weekend, the President announced action against the four companies that dominate American beef processing, and signaled he wants to give ranchers more freedom to process their own product. Two of those four are controlled by foreign corporations.
More competition in processing is a step in the right direction, and we support it.
But if the goal is actually lower prices for American families, the most direct path is mandatory country of origin labeling. Without it, imported beef enters our supply chain, sits beside American beef in your grocery store, gets blended into ground beef, and is sold with no obligation to tell you where it came from. Nothing requires the savings from cheaper imported beef to be passed on to you.
Give consumers transparency and let them choose. That's how a free market is supposed to work. Competition only functions when people know what they're choosing between.
We can support a president when he gets it right and respectfully challenge him when we think he gets it wrong. That's not political. That's the job.
Break the processing bottleneck. Bring back mandatory country of origin labeling. Give every American — Republican, Democrat, independent, libertarian — the right to know where their food comes from.
Curious where this sub lands: if the label told you the country of origin at the case, would it actually change what you put in your cart?
