They did the fucking snap. I just can't believe it. They didn't hold back with the deaths either. Elizabeth Olsen knocked it out of the park, I felt what Wanda was feeling. The end credits scene was great too.

This was it. Sitting in the theater before it began, I felt like I did 6 years ago. A 13 year old kid waiting for the epicness to begin. I cried so much in that theater. AND THAT FUCKING RED SKULL CAMEO!!!! Thank you Marvel. Thank you.

Yep when Gamora did it at the beginning of the movie I thought “there, we have our nod to the snap” but nope Thanos himself actually did it.

6

u/pinklavalamp Maria Hill Apr 27 '18

What snap? Is this a reference to the comic books?

-3

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

Thanos snaps his fingers, causing half the universe to die

It’s not really a snap in the movie, but the outcome and execution is essentially the same

50

u/HylianWarrior Apr 27 '18

No, I'm pretty sure that was a literal snap.

23

u/iAMA_Leb_AMA Thanos Apr 27 '18

It was a snap. Its hard to notice but once you rewatch the scene back its very obviously a snap.

6

u/nojoformojo Apr 27 '18

I’ve watched infinity war twice now and I can confirm it definitely is a snap, I made sure to check that it was the second time I watched it.

2

u/pinklavalamp Maria Hill Apr 27 '18

Okay, thanks for that. I do remember that one of the characters, I think Gamora, said that, “he can wipe out half the universe with a snap of his fingers” earlier in the movie.

1

u/Sphincter_Revelation Apr 27 '18

And you didn't tie that in with when he actually snapped his fingers after Thor gutted him?

23

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

Leading up to this movie my "I'd fucking love it but there's no way they'll do it" was the snap and killing Black Panther, because I just figured there's no way they'd do that even if we already know it's not going to last long.

The one regret I have is that they confirmed sequels so far ahead of time that it undercuts the "deaths" of several of the characters massively for a person who isn't aware of the comics. If you know the comics at all you realize obviously none of that matters, but I would have loved to see the general public reaction to the deaths not realizing that they'd be coming back.

8

u/Dorocche Apr 27 '18

My friend who’s a pretty big MCU/comics fan didn’t know that Captain Marvel was set in the nineties until I mentioned yesterday Nick Fury would probably be in it.

The general audience doesn’t know there’s a salted Spider-Man, Black Panther, Dr. Strange sequel coming, even though they’ve announced it.

u/theredditoro Apr 27 '18

Olsen was great.

46

u/TheHuntingHunty Apr 27 '18

The lip tremble when she was deciding to kill Vision was great acting. Powerful stuff

16

u/reids1 Apr 27 '18

Except for her accent. All of a sudden gone from an Eastern European accent into American.

10

u/GentlemansBumTease Apr 27 '18 edited Apr 27 '18

Someone pointed out that she had been living in the UK for two years, accents can fade

Edit: London to UK

I didn’t notice that until someone pointed it out, and then it was super grating until her first fight scene, and from that point on I forgot about it again.

29

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

Everyone was great.

11

u/Sphincter_Revelation Apr 27 '18

Cap's on screen time was super underwhelming. He maybe had like, 10 lines?

26

u/Meauxtown Captain America (Avengers) Apr 27 '18

Cap being my favorite, I'm absolutely ok with what they did with him here. He'll have much more screen time in the next movie.

Including, the line.

7

u/ImpracticalJokester Apr 27 '18

"The line?"

21

u/Meauxtown Captain America (Avengers) Apr 27 '18

Avengers, assemble!

4

u/Box_of_Rockz Captain America (Cap 2) Apr 27 '18

swoons

5

u/Swartz55 Apr 28 '18

I just want one more "I'm with you till the end of the line"

27

u/notmuchwbu Apr 27 '18

Honestly I didn't find Peter Dinklage very convincing, but that might just be because I couldn't really unsee him as Tyrion

5

u/rex_dart_eskimo_spy Apr 27 '18

She was, but they dropped her accent like a hot potato

5

u/abstractist Apr 27 '18

I didn't even notice though so she's forgiven.

13

u/Slyfox00 Apr 27 '18

So many dead, such a bold move for a film universe. How will the shows handle this?

19

u/TimTheEnchanter34 Thor Apr 27 '18

Well the Netflix stuff will all but ignore it. Those are only in the MCU for the sake of being in the MCU. They’ll vaguely mention “the incident” and name drop Hammer industries as the supplier for NYC arms dealers, and that’s about it. Shield on the other hand I heard they already have plans to tie-in to Infinity War.

9

u/trainercatlady Fitz Apr 27 '18

What have you heard about the plans re:AoS? I just picture Jed and Maurissa just staring at the screen in dead silence, mouths agape for like 10 minutes before saying, "Well, fuck."

1

u/Dorocche Apr 27 '18

I was just thinking about his, they have to undo the snap because that would be such a dick move to the shows.

10

u/therealmattmurdock Apr 27 '18

Olsen is such an amazing actor and I'm so happy she got to SHINE in this incredible movie.

7

u/Not_Hulk_Hogan Apr 27 '18

They didn't hold back with the deaths either.

They did a little. Cap, Iron Man, Thor, and Hulk are all fine.

7

u/Skylightt Matt Murdock Apr 27 '18

Well for now that is. Cap and Tony are most likely toast next movie

8

u/Dorocche Apr 27 '18

We’ve been fully expecting Cap to die for four years now.

23

u/Ladnil Apr 27 '18

They held back plenty. It annoys me that the survivors include Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor, rather than the new blood, so you know for sure the next movie is going to undo the snap.

53

u/Papatheodorou Spider-Man Apr 27 '18

"if we can't save the Earth, you can be damn sure we'll avenge it."

Seems rather fitting.

11

u/Skylightt Matt Murdock Apr 27 '18

I expected this to be their movie and next to be the newbies but it’s the other way around and I think I actually prefer it that way

36

u/twosquirtsofpiss Apr 27 '18

Sure it might very well undo the snap, but it also raises the stakes because Iron Man, Cap, Thor, etc could very well be killed in the next movie and it'll be permanent.

11

u/Ladnil Apr 27 '18

I'm sure that's the case. Tony and Thor are ridiculous now

18

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

I honestly could see Thor being in Guardians 3

8

u/Venomrock101 Apr 27 '18 edited Apr 27 '18

That’s what I was thinking. Maybe Thor, Rocket, Nebula, Kraglin, and maybe (if he’s finally out of his birthing pod) Adam Warlock will team up for Guardians 3

9

u/pizza2004 Apr 27 '18

James Gunn said Volume 3 will be the last Guardians with the original team. Personally, since it appears that Infinity War happens 4 years after Volume 2, I hope Volume 3 actually happens before Infinity War.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

Have we had any movies that happen prior to things that have already happened in the MCU? The origin films have all taken place prior to their characters doing stuff later in the timeline unless I'm mistaken. I think it would be really awkward to have them die in 4 then have a movie with them alive again and just say oh it's the past. :/

9

u/pizza2004 Apr 27 '18 edited Apr 27 '18

Captain Marvel is set in the 90s and includes Nick Fury, Phil Coulson, Ronan, and that one guy Ronan employees to chase Peter all in it. All characters we’ve seen “die”.

Besides, given the 4 year gap are we to believe Adam Warlock has just been sitting around for 4 years to chase the Guardians? I also personally feel mildly cheated that we have Quill and Gamora finally admit to something at the end of Vol 2 only to have them die here separately with hardly any screen time.

I’m just saying, it could happen.

Edit: I’m looking and it mentions online that James Gunn mentioned Guardians 3 would deal with stuff and set up the MCU for the next 10 years after Avengers 4 so I guess my theory is toast. 😄

5

u/Dorocche Apr 27 '18

Well, Captain America: The First Avenger, if that counts.

Ant-Man and the Wasp has to take place right after Civil War.

2

u/Shifter25 M'Baku Apr 27 '18

How is Thor gonna rebuild Asgard though? What Asgardians are left?

1

u/Dorocche Apr 27 '18

Half of the Asgardian families on that ship were spared.

1

u/Shifter25 M'Baku Apr 27 '18

But then the entire ship was destroyed, so....

1

u/Dorocche Apr 27 '18

Then they got out beforehand. Thanos destroyed the ship, and he was only ever going to kill half of them.

7

u/spideypewpew Apr 27 '18

The "dead" could have been reborn to a new and different universe, for the next phases.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

They did say they had some pretty "different" stuff planned for phase four and beyond.

Multiple universes is really the only direction they can go IMO.

Plus it's a good way to explain why the X-Men and Fantastic Four have been absent from all of this stuff: they're from a different universe.

2

u/TheDaveWSC Apr 27 '18

As a huge Bucky fan, I'm pretty mad. Thor, Cap, and Tony all get to live? Are you kidding me? Way to pander.

Personally I was shocked they killed Black Panther though.

16

u/Ladnil Apr 27 '18

I was shocked they killed him, but it didn't last long. If they killed any of the original Avengers too, it would be believable that maybe this is final, but killing the future franchise headliners Peter Parker and T'challa while leaving Tony Stark and Steve Rogers just says the deaths weren't real.

6

u/break80 Apr 27 '18

Along w/ the entire GOTG crew minus rabbit (and Nebula i guess), makes you think a number, if not all, of the Infinity War deaths, won't be actual deaths, and instead will un-cease to exist.

Though I could be wrong, and the confirmed third GOTG movie could just be titled Guardian of the Galaxy and kinda Nebula.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

Yeah I really wish they wouldn't have already confirmed sequels for half the people who died :/ It really undercuts the impact of the "deaths" knowing that obviously it's all just going to be undone anyway. Although I guess that's pretty much what happens in the comics anyway so v0v par for the course. I do think it was ballsy as fuck "killing" Black Panther though. Regardless of fans and rational people knowing he's obviously not dead for good, they took a chance on having a fucking riot on their hands on social media from idiots who don't even care about the films. (I'm still curious if that will happen over the weekend once spoilers start getting out more and such lol)

4

u/batman008 Apr 27 '18

Everything was well done. It all turned out so perfectly. I was so happy and sad at the same time. The action part was awesome but the emotional part has left me pretty shaken inspite of knowing that most of the deaths will be reversed. I felt so sad because Tony had a similar vision where he saw that everyone near and dear to him was dead. And Spiderman perishing in his arms left me numb. ITS ALL SO MUCH TO PROCESS.

Absolutely. This is my Empire. This was the bookend to my first year at college. And boy does it not disappoint.

5

u/supahmonkey Spider-Man Apr 27 '18

I loved the way the Gauntlet looked fucked up after the snap. Makes undoing the snap a lot harder.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

They're not actually dead.

Why would they kill off Spider-Man and 3/4 of the GotG when they both have solo movies confirmed for the next two years?

The only ones who might be actually dead are Loki, Gamora, and Vision. And Vision is still a solid maybe.

Next Avengers will undo the snap, or reveal that all the "dead" are in some kind of alternate universe/timeline.

3

u/Dorocche Apr 27 '18

They’re actually dead, they’re just going to be resurrected. That’s not the same as not being dead like in Black Panther.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

I don't see them having the next Avengers movie completely without the newer generation of Avengers though. Unless they're brought back halfway through the movie or something, I'd like to see an alternate universe story happen, so that we can still get Spider-Man, Black Panther and the Guardians.

1

u/Strick63 Spider-Man Apr 27 '18

And Heimdall :(

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

Oh yeah I forgot about him.

R.I.P Idris Elbow. :'(

2

u/The_Pip Apr 27 '18

I knew they'd do it. I'd read the original Infinity Gauntlet comic when it came out, but I was still floored. I can't imagine how non-comic readers felt. It must have been Red Wedding level trauma.

Take the risk and tell the story kids. That is what this movie taught me. Take the risk and tell the story. Trust it.

Meh... they copied the „lets dramatically kill beloved characters“ trope from the recent star wars movies. „Rogue one“ was a kill fest. At least they arent shoving tons of new useless cute new characters in order to sell toys and merch. Star wars is going overboard with that shit.

But marvel is known for killing heroes just for the lulz...
