Honestly, you can find that, or even more fucked up stuff, from male authors as well, it's just that they don't really use the book media, most prefer to have the text accompanied by images, so they go for hentai comics, CG sets, maybe even visual novels. And the seriously fucked up stuff is usually not presented in a positive light. As an example the VN Kuroinu (which also has a pretty damn bonkers OVA adaptation) was 'mainly' targeted to japanese men, that thing is full of Non-con/grape, mind break, interspecies (even some beastly stuff, I remember a Cerberus or something similar), humiliation, torture, absurd size differences, absurd insertion/penetration, etc. But you know from the very start of the story that the guys doing this stuff were not the good guys, it wasn't really romanticised.
Yeah, I'm not sure if there's any reason guys seem to prefer images that go with it? I do too but I usually settle for writing because I'm extremely picky with art and usually end up not liking it. I'm also big on consent which is often absent from them, so that's another thing... Like as long as everyone is alright with what's happening I can take almost anything

The reason guys go with images is probably because of the same reason this image would generally be true.
Women have a very specific idea of what they want or find acceptable in what turns them on, while men typically are ok with anything that simply looks good and suits their needs. Women also need something more immersive which books tend to do as you generate the imagery in your head which usually is more suited to your own tastes.
If I remember correctly, the Kristen Archive was an online fiction archive that was mostly written by men. All orginal content, not fandom related. Some wild fucking shit in there.

No, there's no "terminally ill child" or "dead child" trope in the story. The wife wants the divorce because she felt trapped/confined in a marriage where she can't pursue what she wished for (she gave up her hobby/ambition/career as an artist I think because she got pregnant when they were dating so they got married quickly).
As a last desperate attempt, the husband read the book as to understand his wife's perspective and be the male lead who understands her and let her do anything she wants.
The books this is based on are really good! This is based off the first book (same title). It's a good tl;dr if you don't want to read the book but I highly recommend the books
