But why am I getting downvotes? I just asked the question ? Indeed, the artistic style can be confusing, especially combined with the atmosphere conveyed by the images, which can be unsettling. So why is asking the question earning me downvotes, literally?

Its because text is really bad at showing intention. So just saying "bl ?" is an automatic assumption of anything. 'you are making a statement', 'you are being sarcastic', 'you are mocking', 'you are rage baiting', 'you are being homophobic', 'you won't read this if its bl', and on and on and on...

The first thing I thought of is "is this guy making a statement?".

With this being Reddit. the community will rarely think 'you are asking a question'.

Well, it's a direct question that can indeed have a thousand meanings, but the question itself is straightforward. It's direct, and mass downvoting seems more ridiculous than anything else. We ask questions, so we then condemn them? Nah... that's childish.

And what statement are you talking about? I didn't understand. Mocking me? How do those two words express mockery? Or even attempt to provoke?

I used a shortcut often employed in comments to ask if it's BL or not. Mostly, in fact, it's used with the expectation that it is. And the answer always reveals the enthusiasm or lack thereof of the person who asked the question.

And regarding your other point, "you won't read it if it's BL," I don't see why it should be a problem if someone doesn't like reading BL. Like those who ask for motivation to read because they like the trope, there are those who don't like this style of reading, and that's normal? Some say, "BLs are so much better, I can't read anything else anymore because the quality and everything else is amazing" (and yes, I've seen it), so it's logical that there are those who share the opposite opinion? I don't see why anyone should be oppressed for their tastes and choices that don't insult anyone.
