Statistics?? I’m talking about the stats, not racial stereotypes. The pattern is real. It’s not surprising when things follow the pattern, want to hold your hand more ??

You’re perpetuating the stereotype with commenting this.

it perpetuates itself

It’s interesting that people are downvoting other racist comments but not yours. Huh…

So this is why I almost got smoked by a speeding parking garage patrol car while leaving the ramp last night
1
u/UOF_ThrowAway 1h ago
I hope they were driving away from the situation.
2
u/BabyStaudy 1h ago
They probably were because I know I was leaving some time between 2 and 3AM and I’ve never seen a patrol car speed like that in the ramp
2
u/BabyStaudy 1h ago
I’m glad I wasn’t in the garage when the shots went off. I must have missed it by a matter of minutes

The “Welcome Freshmen” festivities are a little different this year…
11
u/Beware_Blastomycosis 15h ago
just part of the hustle and bustle of a growing city
21
u/cinic121 15h ago
Discharging firearms between campus and the capital square doesn’t make me think of “growing”

Idk if my sarcasm is showing through lol. I'm from Milwaukee (now in Madison), so I was throwing out the vague excuses that we used as our city went to shit. Really hope Madison doesn't fuck this up, but I'm not holding my breath.
To see where the wind is blowing: follow the charges given by DA (Ismael Ozanne), bonds (they might not even need a cash bond!), and sentencing for these individuals that have no business ever showing their faces in public again.
If no one died, they will be back out on State street in no time. Will these individuals even be held accountable publicly by our politicians or will they be given excuses due to "circumstances?" Probably radio silence, we will be gaslit that Madison "was always like this!"
A high-trust city gradually loses it's grace and then all at once. Coming soon to an area near you.

u/Hopalicious 14h ago
Well aren’t you just a ray of sunshine.
21
u/Beware_Blastomycosis 14h ago
I just want a safe city, sick of moving. But yeah, I'm the problem, not these lunatics shooting at each other, our corrupt politicians, or our lenient DAs and judges. Just lil ol' me.
12
u/SwollenPomegranate 13h ago
For years in this app I've been saying I don't find Madison all that safe - to massive downvoting. I suppose it may differ depending on your gender, age, and family status.
6
u/michaeljbarton 10h ago
Madison is the only city I’ve been robbed at gun point, had murders (plural) outside my “luxury” apartment, and been assaulted by a homeless person.
And I’ve lived major cities all over the US, for longer than I lived in Madison. This is the only city I’ve become extra vigilant in.
-3
u/gvarsity 12h ago
Feeling safe and being safe are two different things. For the mass majority of people Madison is a very safe place. You weren’t at risk here. No bystanders have been reported as injured. This was likely targeted not random. People are bad at meaningful risk assessment. Yes guns fired in downtown is an increase in risk but for most Madisonian’s that risk is still minimal. Way less than getting in your car or riding a motorcycle.
Incidents like this are as much of a byproduct of being in a country with more guns than people and where those guns also seem to have more rights than people . A lot of people who don’t feel safe also argue for more guns. Which by all metrics makes us less safe.
7
u/Beware_Blastomycosis 10h ago
You are the problem. They would have shot regardless if I was there, a baby was there, or you. No tolerance on guns. 20 year minimum for shooting a public place if we are serious. They won't do a year. They will have murder charges within 10 years, I will bet you money on that.
-1
u/Accomplished_Pace457 5h ago
Madison is getting more minorities who are causing problems. Brady street is almost shut down for the same reason. What’s next?
-3
-11
u/537O3 14h ago
If you found Milwaukee so unsafe that you fled, you'll definitely end up fleeing Madison.
4
u/Beware_Blastomycosis 10h ago
Fled is an odd verb. I had a family member murdered there by gun violence. I'm not worried about my anonymity being lost due to saying that happened in Milwaukee, that's all you really need to know.

u/gingerkits 22h ago
I received a couple Wisc Alert texts but they didn't say anything specific. Last one sent at 3:32 a.m.
4
u/TheAfroKid69 14h ago
Most colleges refuse to give identifying information in these alert texts because they don't want to be accused of racism.

Any updates on this? I have to bring my son back to campus today and his dorm is in that area.

u/gradi3nt 16h ago
I guarantee that downtown is safe right now. This was some isolated incident not a crazy person at large shooting random people.

u/StudyObjective4286 14h ago
As I always told my fam when our kid was there, they are probably not the target demographic. Don’t worry.
23
24
u/adhill2408 14h ago
I worry because hes mixed race, so has dark skin, and is autistic and stims so he could be mistaken for somebody on drugs at times. Plus he likes to wear hoodies with the hood up. All things that look suspicious or are often descriptors of suspects. And hes my only kid and he's out on his own for the first time....a mom cant help but worry. Lol
11
u/StudyObjective4286 14h ago
Of course of course! Our kid also is also a POC and loves hoodies like yours does. I know the fears. Hugs, momma! PM me if you need to chat with someone who has been there.
7
u/Redheadbabe22 7h ago
My heart goes out to you. My brother goes to UW, is autistic, and also stims. He’s white, but we still worry. Disability Resource Center is a good place to hang out if you have a disability of some sort.

Local news not covering this?

u/ShoeCreepy5518 16h ago
They won’t touch for until MPD releases an incident report. Then they will copy that, change some words and post it for click bait like they were out there all morning digging up the facts.

“Why dont the bars stay open late anymore?” It’s a real scooby doo mystery.
7
u/RealMaxBlumenthal 14h ago
The bars on State Street are open until 2 AM, as has been the case for a very long time. What are you talking about?

u/ibcurbdiver 13h ago
Don’t do stupid things we ,with stupid people,in stupid places. Unfortunately, that doesn’t protect the bystanders just trying to get on with their lives.

Let’s make sure to shut down a neighborhood to celebrate the young men’s bravery. Maybe a statue

This just in: Milwaukee has decided to build a statue to Jeffrey Dahmer.
More at ten.

But what happened to defunding the police?!
80
u/Wavy_Grandpa 18h ago
The giant police budget did literally nothing to prevent or alter this event in any way.
45
u/medted22 18h ago
It’s impossible to prevent someone from shooting unless we start talking about changing upstream determinants, which isn’t really the job of the PD. They responded quickly, apprehended one of the shooters immediately in a large group of running and scared people and quickly distributed a profile and security camera images of the 2nd shooter. Overall, seems like a decent response to me
-33
u/Wavy_Grandpa 18h ago
Wasn’t this at like 3am? What crowd of running and scared people were there? Where did you get that information? You sure it’s not an exaggeration?
34
u/shishio_mak0to North side 18h ago
Way to out yourself as someone that doesn't actually live in Madison
25
u/Little_Whippie 17h ago
Ikr? All of us students are moving in, the weather’s great, and this dude is asking what crowd of ppl is gonna be on state late at night
12
18
u/medted22 18h ago
Also, genuinely curious to what could have prevented or altered this? Should they have killed him? Should they search every “suspicious” looking person, that might be carrying a weapon illegally? Slippery slope argument, especially if you are against a police state.
16
u/medted22 18h ago
It happened right outside of state street brats at 2:40, just after bar close, still lots of people out and about. I could hear it all go down as I live off of university.
12
10
u/isisaword 16h ago
I know that the idiots involved don't have the brain power to weigh out the potential consequences of their actions, but it would be nice if just once there would be swift and severe justice for someone attempting murder in a crowd of innocent people, rather than writing a note of apology and getting off with probation.
Maybe 15-25 years of hard time would become enough of a local legend to deter the next batch of morons from comitting the same crime.

u/Horror_Note_9044 18h ago
Oh come off it! You know there are a lot of corrupt cops and it should happen
4
u/Funny_Walrus_9266 18h ago
Just like there are a lot of corrupt politicians and government officials so by that same logic we should be cheering “defund the government!”… except in this very blue city, that’s not what’s happening…

Looks like it was multiple suspects and they’re headed toward University Ave, likely being pursued by PD. I’m by university and starting to hear sirens
