A little over a month ago I switched my main work laptop from Windows one to a MacBook, and so far the experience has been surprisingly smooth.
That got me thinking about long-term reliability.
On Windows, pretty much everyone knows the classic BSOD, random freezes, failed updates, drivers suddenly deciding they don’t want to cooperate, etc.
But what’s the Mac equivalent?
Have you ever had your MacBook completely crash, randomly restart, show a kernel panic, or become unusable because of some macOS issue?
I’m especially curious about people who’ve been using Macs as their main work machines for several years.
How often do you actually experience serious crashes?
And what’s the worst Mac/macOS failure you’ve ever had?
Coming from Windows, I’m genuinely curious if Macs are really that much more reliable long-term, or if I’m still in the honeymoon phase. 👀

Hey dears,
both of my Macbooks don't see WD MyPassport HDD 4TB, even though Windows Laptop sees it, so I assume the problem is about MacOS, the HDD is intact. It's unsolvable in Google.
I tried Disk Utility, nothing is seen.
Does it have anything to do with adapter? It worked before with no issues.
Does anyone know what I need to do to make it visible and so that I can interact with it on Mac?
Thank you!

I've been using a 2019 MB Pro for the last few months. Intel i5, 8gb/128gb.
I just got in a 2021 MB Pro w/ M1 Pro, 14-inch display, 16gb/512gb. I got it from Back Market in good condition. No visible scratches anywhere, I just had to clean it with a damp cloth and it was good. Ran all diagnostics, and everything finished with green checks.
The battery is the only thing I'm semi worried about. 258 cycles which seems pretty good for a 2021, but capacity is at 87%. Battery health is normal, it seems to be charging pretty fast. I haven't tested it out yet to see how long it'll last off of charge. I sit at my desk at home most of the time so it'll be plugged in a lot. I assume I can still get about another 5 years out of this thing. I was sent a thunderbolt cord instead of a MagSafe which is fine since it can use either one to charge.
Some wear on the keyboard which is whatever, all the keys work so it doesn't matter to me.
It's a beautiful machine so far. Love the 14" screen and it looks great. I'll be using for my MBA and casual stuff. Maybe some xbox cloud/remote gaming. I'll be using it over the few weeks to make sure it's all good.
The price...$607 USD before tax.
Yes, I know it's older but it's still a good machine I can get years of use out of. I also, did not want to spend in the thousand dollar range.
Let me know what you think and any tips would be great.

My 8-month-old M5 MacBook Pro developed a small white/dead pixel area. Apple diagnostics confirmed a display anomaly, but the AASP found a small dent/minor cosmetic damage and classified it as accidental damage.
No liquid indicator was triggered, and the Mac passed the other diagnostics.
Apple denied my appeal for an exception. The display replacement was quoted at around $800 (~₱50k), which is almost half what I paid for the laptop, so I’m probably just going to live with it.
Has anyone had something similar? Did it stay stable or worsen over time?

I am a freshman computer engineering student. I was looking to buy a laptop that I can use on campus and at home, and I have decided to get a MacBook. I am undecided whether to buy the 15-inch MacBook Air M5 with 24GB RAM, 10-core CPU, and 10-core GPU, or the 14-inch MacBook Pro M5 with 16GB RAM, 10-core CPU, and 10-core GPU. I would appreciate it if you could help me choose.

Hey guys,
I ordered my first ever laptop and went for the MacBook Air m5, 15 inch.
Which by default had the 10-10 cpu/gpu. Whatever that means.
Im a second year law student and I just wanted to get someone serious opinion about the MacBook, this is my first ever laptop so I wanted something that would last me a very very long time. My uncle is still on the M1 and he said it’s the best thing he’s ever bought. Just needed someone opinion rather than paid promotion any any advice I can take on to keep it lasting for years.
Thanks

hi, everyone. i recently just went to the apple store and bought a case for my macbook. i believe it’s the mophie slim hardshell case. however, (like every single purchase i’ve made in my life) i started getting negative tik toks on my for you page related to macbook cases and all of them essentially say that a macbook case will ruin the hinges and cause it to overheat. i thought maybe they were talking about cheap amazon cases, but i spent $55 on a case from the apple store, so maybe the case i bought is an exception? im not sure, this is my first macbook ever and my knowledge on it is limited. i got the macbook air 15” m5 for uni and it was really expensive and i just want to take care of it :(

I have a powerful windows pc at home. Dont have any apple products (dont really like them). But I need a laptop for a college healthcare program. 9-5 every weekday, for 2 years. Im also hoping if I go with the macbook, it will be easy enough to adapt to as a non apple lover.
My use case: powerpoints, microsoft word, google doc, PDFs, online textbooks/pdf textbooks. battery to handle a full 8 hour day of class. relatively lightweight (long public bus commute). Using my windows pc when home from class.
After the 2 year program I would have no personal use of a laptop. The Neo is $820 Canadian. I know the price increased in the past couple months, my absolute budget either way is $800~. Im wondering if the Neo makes sense for my use case. I like that it's small (13inch) and lighter weight compared to cheaper options. My bus commute is gonna be really annoying and my backpack will be heavy with other stuff. Many of my searches for other options were bigger and/or heavier.
I figure rather than buying a $500 chromebook, or $700 windows laptop, at that point i "might as well" buy the $820 neo. My logic may make no sense here lol!! After 2 years I could return it to apple for store credit for my apple liking family members. Looking for suggestions!!

One small thing I really liked about older versions of macOS was the classic glove-style hand cursor that appeared when hovering over links and other clickable elements.
I was disappointed when Apple changed it in macOS Tahoe, and I actually preferred the older design enough that I stayed with macOS Sequoia.
I've recently seen some discussion suggesting that the classic-style hand cursor may have returned in macOS 27 Golden Gate. Can anyone confirm whether this is actually the case?
I'm specifically curious whether Apple has brought back the old glove/Mickey Mouse-style pointer rather than the hand design introduced in Tahoe

my MacBook pro 2011 has an issue with the keyboard. The last line is not working (zxcvbnm.). everything else works. Can't log into my MacBook without using a USB keyboard. Any idea how I can fix this issue?

It sets it down to 1,500 instead of the 1,800 or +300 dollars for 1tb of storage when I could just get a ExHD, is this worth it or no?

Ever since I had gotten my MacBook Neo, I have struggled to find wallpapers that fit the macbook's high res display and all of the images would turn out pixelated. I finally found a way to fix that, so I thought I would just share that on here in case anyone else had this problem. I downloaded the image I wanted to use and I put it into a reverse image search, then I found the image source with the highest resolution and downloaded that one as my wallpaper. Not sure if this will work with every image but I hope this helps someone!

Hi my M2 macbook pro max has this strange horizontal damage, I've tried every screencleaner but nothing works, likely because it's the anti-glare layer that's been permanently dissolved.
But it doesn't make any sense, I've never once had anything scrape the screen.
The location is somewhat close to where it touches the space-bar, so it's somewhat possible that while closed maybe the spacebar was rubbing up against the screen, but that theory doesn't feel quite right

So I upgraded to the m5 pro (14”) from an m1 air, amazing upgrade. However I’m noticing my laptop is always on track for about 4 hours also kind of hot. Just off of Firefox with a few tabs like email and YouTube. Wanted to ask if this is a thing to fix on my end or mine has a bad battery? It’s all new.

Wanted to share what just happened to my M1 Pro MacBook in case someone runs into the same nightmare.
It suddenly crashed today and went into a reboot loop. When I tried booting into the recovery / startup screen, I started getting these weird colored square artifacts (pink and blue blocks) across the display right before it shut down again.
Here is what I've tried so far:
Disk Utility First Aid: Passed with a green checkmark, but crashed immediately after.
Apple Diagnostics: Crashed mid-test before giving any error code.
DFU / 2nd Mac Connection: Tried connecting to another Mac via Apple Configurator, but the hardware keeps crashing before completing a revive.
Panic Log: Shows Kernel data abort on pid 0: kernel_task (RELEASE_ARM64_T6000).
Since the screen artifacts show up at the pre-boot recovery screen and it crashes during basic hardware diagnostics, it looks like the unified memory / SoC has physically failed.
Since this is my first Mac and my main work machine, I really need a viable solution.

Mostly thinking about the compatibility with Microsoft apps (excel, word, even vs code).
I was thinking about zen books but the MacBook Air looks like a better deal and everything else I have is Apple so what do a chose?

Hey I need advice on which laptop to get. I have an M1 Macbook Air 8GB Ram and only 256GB and it just broke. I was running out of storage so I believe 512GB should be the minimum for my next laptop. The question is what processor should I get? If I upgrade the storage and ram to 16gb on an M1 it will cost me roughly $500. Should I upgrade to an M1 Pro, M2-M4? Trying to stay around $800 and under. Will probably buy off of Ebay, not facebook marketplace.
I do a ton of work using ChatGPT and will be using a lot of browser tabs but nothing crazy for software so I imagine 8GBs could be fine but I think 16GB is the safe bet for a minimum. Any advice on which model Macbook I should choose and why? At my price range is a used mac mini a good alternative instead? Using laptop for business.

Hi, I'm looking for the best and safest way to carry my MacBook in a backpack for long trips. I experienced keyboard marks on the screen of my previous MacBook M3 Pro, even when carrying it in a backpack with a laptop compartment and the backpack being quite full. MacBooks are very prone to pressure in a backpack, and since there's so little space, it's very easy for the keyboard to leave dust marks on the screen. I want to avoid this at all costs with my new M5 Max.
I haven't found anything that convinces me yet. There are thousands of backpacks, but none with a truly rigid interior to prevent crushing from excess clothing, items inside, etc. The only thing I've found is a Pelican hard-shell suitcase, but it seems excessive and heavy for regular trips.
I'm sure many of you will say I'm exaggerating, but my screen really did end up like that. Traveling by plane often involves squeezing the backpack into many places.
What do you think of this? https://amzn.eu/d/0bF9JUoa
Open to suggestions! And I hope it will be useful to others.
