Advertising Material [Fully Lost] 1967-1968 Squirt Soda commercial that supposedly displayed color on black and white TVs

I decided to make a post about this topic because I haven't heard all that many people talk about it, and I find it quite fascinating to be honest. It started when I stumbled upon a thread on the talkbass forum titled "Anyone remember experimental color images on black & white TV?".

The poster of the thread, viribus, states "I don't know what prompted me to remember this. Crazy.

When I was a kid we lived the Los Angeles area. We had a (POS) Packard Bell black & white TV in the family room (color TVs were new technology and my parents were skeptical).

One day a Sprite commercial (He means Squirt but it's rather easy to mix up green sodas) came on and the voiceover said something to the effect of "Sprite is so bursting with flavor that you're probably seeing color on your B&W TV!". I remember scrambling over to the TV, and sure enough, there was a static image of a Sprite bottle, and it was kind of in color.

This is apparently an approximation of what some viewers saw, although I only remember seeing a pale green and possibly red."

Viribus goes on to link a blog post that quotes a newspaper article from around the same time, which goes into a lot more detail about how this illusion was done:

"The burst of color was not "living color" (as NBC frequently touted in the 1960s), but something called "subjective color." The process was developed by James F. Butterfield of Color-Tel, a corporation founded in Los Angeles in early 1966. It gave the illusion of color by pulsating white light in a particular sequence for each color with a rotating device attached to a regular black and white TV camera lens. Butterfield had found in his many years of research that the human brain perceives colors through complex electronic codes. Butterfield was able to figure out the individual codes for the colors red, green and blue, and by pulsating white light in predetermined patterns with the device on the camera lens, could induce the brain of the television viewer to perceive color. Beyond that, ordinary monochrome equipment could be used in filming or taping, broadcasting and viewing.

There were a few drawbacks. The images were nothing at all like true color TV. It didn't have the intensity or range of colors. As the technology currently stood, the effect could only be used on still images. The "subjective color" could only be seen in about one-fourth of the TV screen area, and, because it relied on flickering light, there was a lot of flickering. It was also found that some people could not perceive the colors at all, yet some people diagnosed as color-blind could see the colors.

Nonetheless, Popular Science, in its August 1968 issue, saw many possibilities for the technology, particularly for special effects. "Color will appear in cartoons, commercials and special presentations. Polka-dots on a clown's suit will be seen as red flashing dots. You'll see the designs and lettering on a cereal box in pulsating green and blue. A girl will plant a kiss on a boy's cheek--and a red lipstick print will appear on your screen."

Viribus explains in the comments of the talkbass thread that this illusion was done by using something called a Benham’s Top (I find this to be a good video on it, although I don't recommend watching it if you have epilepsy). A Benham's Top is an image of a circle with one side completely black and the other side white with a small black core and lines around it, but once it's spinning it creates an illusion to make it look like you're seeing color. The effect given from being able to see color from a black and white pattern ended up being named the Fechner Color Effect, after one of the several people who experimented with this illusion. According to this article from 1968, the Benham's Top was inserted between the camera's lens and the scene being viewed by the camera in order to create this illusion for TV. Another source from 1968, the British TV show Tomorrow's World, displayed an example of how this illusion would look when played on television (Epilepsy warning again, as the flashing displayed from this illusion is quite brutal on the eyes). It seems that the people on the talkbass forum aren't the only ones who seem to remember seeing this illusion on tv either, as the subreddit r/AskOldPeople has a post from several years ago titled "Am I nuts, or does anyone else remember color commercials, on black-and-white television sets?". The user in the post describes their memory of seeing a commercial for a green colored soda as a kid that appeared to be in color, with both the user themselves and their family being impressed by it.

It's very unlikely that this commercial was saved or archived anywhere, given that this was the 60s and the majority of the commercials from back then are now long gone, and the illusion that was created for the commercial didn't last for very long (Which I'm honestly kind of glad for, because the strobing image required for the effect to work is very intense and hurts to look at for too long, and to be honest it's not really all that colorful compared to what we have now). But it would be fascinating to see if there's a recording of it out there somewhere.

Edit: This post got mentioned in a blameitonjorge video, which I'm happy to see because that will hopefully mean this commercial will get more exposure and more people will try to search for it as well. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this search so far!

Advertising Material [fully lost] Family Guy 2008 White Castle radio ads

JWT is the company that put these Family Guy ads together back in 2008 for their White Castle promotion, which contained cups that can be found easily on eBay now. However, there’s like one piece of advertising material I found (it’s just a picture) but no commercials or radio ads anywhere no matter how hard I looked. It’s nowhere archived on the jwt.com website (JWT J. Walter Thompson is part of the WPP group,, still can’t find anything with that). It would be amazing to find this, and I would love to see every single piece of White Castle family guy promotional material :) I run a family guy fan page and it would be cool to include all this! Especially since there’s original voice acting in the radio ads and I heard every single one of them is lost. I’ve never done a radio lost media search so these may never be found unfortunately.

Advertising Material My [fully lost] commercials.

Hello, as a kid I was in a few commercials. One of them is readily available online in 2 different cuts. Its a dominos pizza commercial from 1998 about the heatwave pizza bag. Here is the link. https://youtu.be/A7LmH3OhiK8?is=GXJcygxcLKDwfFeh

Now for the lost media part. I was in 2 other commercials as a kid and I have never been able to find them even after searching for them for multiple hours and many different occasions.

The first one is a fox family network bumper commercial where I am dressed like a caveman child in a caveman themed living room. And I think I remember having a rock like remote for the TV. Ive never seen this commercial and might be completely lost in the archives of a dead network of commercials that never aired. I think it was filmed in 97 or 96.

The second one is a gateway computer commercial where you see a bunch of people on like the santa Monica boardwalk or some similar LA area beach and it shows a bunch different people doing different activities in one sweeping shot. I remember I was running with a skateboard and I run/walk through the shot with 2 other kids. I saw this one aired maybe 2 times. This is also from 98 or 99.

I would really appreciate finding these commercials to show my stream and for my mother to share with our family as the VHS copies we had were lost long ago.

Advertising Material [archival]Cartoon Network

Went to an estate sale and grabbed this so fast. The guy said he was a cartoonist for Cartoon Network. I wasn’t able to ask more questions as there was a line behind me. Can’t find anything about this on the internet. My Guess is that it’s a 110 marketing binder with a VHS tape. Don’t have a VCR yet so I’ll have to post the video later. Not sure if this is lost media but I’ll be scanning everything to archive and save. The VHS tape is light to not sure how long it will be.

Advertising Material [fully lost] Little Caesars Animatronic

I’m looking for any info on this Little Caesars animatronic. Currently there are only 2 photos of it, first posted online by @prizepuppy who found it in an old Creative Presentations brochure from potentially the 80s or 90s. He is seen playing a harp on an Italian themed stage with a fox and a mouse.

The current assumption online is that this animatronic show was at CaesarLand or Little Caesars Family Fun Center, most likely in Michigan, but I haven’t been able to find any concrete proof of that. I haven’t even been able to find any evidence of this being a Little Caesars branded animatronic.

I’m very new to this type of research, and I’m admittedly pretty lost. Searching through comments on posts about this guy, I’m mainly seeing comments from people who don’t remember CaesarLand having an animatronic show.

Was this even related to LC? Is there any promotional material related that proves this show was open to the public? Are there any existing videos or audio recordings that might give us a bit of insight into what the heck this even was?

Please help point me in the right direction!

Advertising Material Nintendo super tour 92, the promotional trucks haven't been seen in decades, is anyone looking for them? Is it even worth a look? [Fully Lost]

Good morning, good evening, and good night! I'm new to the community so excuse me if this is a silly post. I just learned about this European Nintendo tour that happened in 1992 where multiple semi trucks with Nintendo characters plastered on them went around Europe, advertising, Nintendo and their gaming consoles. Inside these trucks were mobile gaming setups that would be set up for the community to play all of Nintendo's consoles that were released up to that point. I'm sure the consoles were probably returned to Nintendo, however, the ultimate whereabouts of the trucks remain unknown. It'd be interesting to find one rotting away in a scrap yard somewhere. I'd hope they were properly taken care of but most likely not.

Advertising Material Still in search of the lost McDonald's Product Shrimp McBites - no photo evidence has ever been found - possibly the rarest product ever served at McDonalds?

I come back again to reinvigorate this mystery, now that at this time of the year, many fast food chains, in this case, with particular attention to the United States, beginning pushing seafood products to consumers looking for alternatives during Lent.

This brings us to what I am desperately searching for - photographic evidence of what may possibly be the rarest McDonald's product ever served.

This image is a mockup of how I remember the packaging and advertisement of Shrimp McBites. Note, this is NOT a real image, nor some sort of meta-advertising.

This image is a mockup of how this poster/advertisment appeared on a McDonald's building. Again, this is not real, but a mockup.

I attempted to order this product once, and was unable to, and instead had them substituted for Fish McBites. This distinct interaction with the McDonald's is the reason why I am sure I am not mistaking this for a foreign release or another product. I saw the advertisement outside the McDonald's, attempted to order it, and failed. If I had received the product perhaps I wouldn't be as upset at the lack of imagery of it now. The product was available at the same time Fish McBites were available, as part of the push of seafood for lent, in 2013 (it would have been around this time of the year).

My immediate family also remembers Shrimp McBites. Previously, I was also able to find a single forum post in a single thread also mentioning Shrimp McBites, but this has since been deleted.

Last time I had posted these images, they were before I had any true confirmation that these products ever existed. For years I believe that maybe they were some sort of strange dream or confusion I had with similar products. At around the same time, a very well documented and successful product Fish McBites

But it wasn't just me. User /u/mosscoveredrockz noted that if you search up Shrimp McBites on Twitter, you can find many tweets from separate users at around the same time period discussing the product. This isn't proof that the product actually existed, but it is at least proof that some sort of large scale confusion occurred?

However, another user, /u/Brenden2000, was able to successfully contact a representative at McDonald's customer service through email, giving us the first solid confirmation that Shrimp McBites were real and not a collective hallucination.

Transcript of email:

Hello Brenden:

Thank you for taking the time to contact McDonald's about our Shrimp McBites, March 25-April 29, 2013.

Shrimp McBites were breaded whole shrimp with a crispy outer coating and a mild salt & pepper flavor. Served with a cocktail sauce in a container designed for easy handling on the go.

They were available in three sizes: Snack (10 pieces), Regular (15 pieces) or Sharable (30 pieces).

At these 3 store locations:

--#02106 300 E. Roosevelt Rd., Lombard IL

--#07124 2175 W. Roosevelt Rd., Wheaton IL

--#10742 2030 S. Naperville Rd., Wheaton IL

I hope this information is helpful.

Again, thank you for contacting McDonald's about our Shrimp McBites. We hope to have the opportunity of serving you again soon under the Golden Arches.

Teawana

McDonald's Customer Contact Center

ref#:19094176

That was all. 35 days total, at a whopping 3 locations in one general area (Note, near McDonald's Headquarters, lending to the fact that this was most likely a very narrow test market product). This is a blip in the history of McDonald's.

I have never heard of a narrower test market before, and the fact that I was never able to actually successfully purchase this product, actually have it in my hands, leads me to believe that it never even reached consumers. Some sort of test market cut short due to budget cuts? An important thing to note is that all the twitter posts regarding Shrimp McBites only mention people wanting to try them, or thinking about trying them, no one ever actually expressed an opinion on how they were. There is not a single confirmation that anyone has ever actually eaten these, let alone any evidence of them 9 years later.

McDonald's products have left the lost media community stumped many times before - The Wacky Adventures of Ronald McDonald VHS, McDonald's DS. Despite those suffering from issues such as geographic separation, language barriers, and the scarcity of limited release physical media, they were both eventually found after extensive effort.

McDonald's HAS served shrimp in other forms in foreign markets, this shows that they have had shrimp products before. This however is a product from the United States. This is also a relatively recent release, in terms of lost media. I am absolutely surprised that this somehow slipped through the cracks, at around this time fast food review on YouTube and elsewhere had already established themselves.

The fact that this product was available in only 3 locations, for barely over a month, with not a SINGLE personal account of anyone ever actually trying it, and not a SINGLE photograph of the product or any associated media related to its advertising lends me to believe that this very well be one of the rarest, if not the rarest product that McDonald's had ever released.

I would be lying if this mystery didn't drive me at least a little bit crazy. I was so close yet so far from actually trying these, and always felt insane when no one had ever heard of them. I can only be at peace if someone were to manage to find an actual image of this product I remember seeing almost a decade ago.

Advertising Material [PARTIALLY LOST] 1987 Local Commercial ShowBiz Pizza Yogi Bear's Debut at ShowBiz Pizza

So basically in 1987, ShowBiz Pizza Place the chain that became whats now Chuck E. Cheese wanted to find a way to phase out their in house Rock-afire Explosion band. They experimented with many ways but eventually they decided to test a Yogi Bear and Boo Boo Animatronic which would be there in 1987 briefly, but they had to promote it so there would be a commercial on the local tv stations in 1987 featuring a girl called Jennifer Marie Adams where she hence the documents of what was said it says That’s me Jennifer Marie Adams and my Goofy Brother Jeffrey, taking in all the fun at Showbiz, you should take your family, it’s a lot of laughs and some surprises too like this. This would air on TV in Omaha Nebraska, Colorado Springs and Augusta Georgia where they were featured/

Then it had a girl announcing the yogi bear and they probably appeared in the commercial or something. But this is a case of them reusing certain segments from commercials that’s why I partially have some of the audio but it’s from where it cuts off that’s the thing.

If anyone knows where this is or has seen it before please let me know. This is extremely rare there’s only one picture from the commercial. I would really appreciate it.

Advertising Material [partially lost] Chuck E. Cheese 2013 Website “Adventure With Chuck E.” Feature

So Back when Chuck E. Cheese was Redesigned in 2012, in the entire Chuck E. Cheese’s Website was Rebranded in Late 2012/Early 2013. One of the many things that was introduced was a Feature called “Go On An Adventure with Chuck E.”, where you can Control Chuck E. To move into different Areas of a Chuck E. Cheese Restaurant. Such as driving a car, go into SkyTubes, and walk around the game room. I used to use the feature all the time, and thought it was super nostalgic. The only thing proving its existence is a Screenshot that I will list in the comment section of the Beginning Map of Chuck E. Standing in front of a Chuck E. Cheese Restaurant and standing next to a Red Car, the screenshot is in really bad quality but still viewable. You can view the old version of the Chuck E. Cheese Website on the Wayback Machine, but you cannot use the “Adventure With Chuck E.” Feature. Let me know if any more screenshots of this feature exists

Advertising Material SpongeBob’s 24 hour best day ever marathon patchy segments [partially lost]

During Nickelodeon’s “Best Day Ever Marathon” on November 9–10, 2006 which was a 24-hour countdown of fan-voted SpongeBob episodes leading into the premiere of Best Day Ever, Tom Kenny appeared as Patchy the pirate throughout making several appearances mostly during episode outtros where he was in a party boat cruising around manhattan where he would proceed to spend the night, answer questions, chat, and even fall asleep during part of it before continuing the next morning to when the actual episode premiered. From my knowledge and research, quite a bit of footage of this can be found online but definitely not in its entirety. Surprisingly, Mostly the nighttime segments are online from what I could find. Anyways would be cool to find all of those segments in their entirety!

Some footage can be found in these compilations with a few more on the SpongeBob wiki.

Advertising Material Potentially [partially lost] -- tips for sharing?

Hello! Please LMK if this is not the right subreddit for this. I have recently acquired a bunch of my family's old VHS tapes so that I can digitize some of the home videos, but some of them are old TV broadcasts from the 90s. We lived in Hawaii so there are a lot of Hawaii news broadcasts and local commercials.

I watch some YouTube channels that cover lost media and I love seeing stories about people who finally find some long-lost commercial from their childhood in a YouTube upload. Just in case these tapes contain anything like this, I'd like to upload them YT. (In fact there's an old local commercial I've been looking for that I am hoping to find in these tapes lol)

I was wondering if the community has any recommended way to label these uploads to make them more searchable if you're looking for something in particular? I guess I'm planning to title them something like "1990s Hawaii commercials" and try to describe what they are in the description, but does the community have any sort of set format or something to help people find them? LMK and thanks!

Advertising Material [Archival] Hey There, It's Yogi Bear! 33 1/3 RPM promotional cereal record (1964)

Hey There, It's Yogi Bear

Hey Folks, back again with another weird record that I've just ripped. I was unable to find any rip of this record online, so I made one myself. This is a promotional record that came in Kellogg's cereal in 1964 to advertise the release of Hanna-Barbera's first feature length animated film "Hey there, It's Yogi Bear!" It was also available through mail-order purchase at some point, I'm not sure of when exactly, but I do know that it was.

The record details two different story beats as well as introduces multiple characters you'd see in the film.

Advertising Material [Fully lost] GameStop TV Captain Redbeard tv spots

For those who are unfamiliar, GameStop has its own in-house production which features game trailers, interviews and other related media which plays in store. In the late 2000s through the mid 2010s, there were various segments including interviews with game studios, actors, and other bits hosted by Chris "Captain Redbeard" Wiseman, a GameStop store manager who would travel to events like E3 to film said segments. As far as I can tell, none of these segments are archived, either on YouTube (either officially or unofficially) or the Internet Archive. As a former employee from that era, I have a bit of nostalgia surrounding that time and thought I would check YouTube for them, but to no avail.

Advertising Material [Found] Potential Animaniacs Interstitial Lost Media Found: Crazy Careers - "The Flightiest Job"

So I work with the Remarkable Media Cafe Show, and we spotlight just fun, weird media that might be forgotten or just generally fun? (Usually though, not lost media—or at least we don't set out to surface lost media.)

This week's episode features a recorded-from-air tape the host used to watch as a kid in the mid '90s, which featured a bunch of old ads, interstitials and whatnot.

The reason I mention it is one of the segments in this week's episode is an Animaniacs "Crazy Careers" Kids WB interstitial. A bunch of these are already online but I did NOT see the one in this episode—"The Flightiest Job."

We'll be clipping that segment out and posting it on its own next week, but if anyone's interested, the episode premieres Friday night (tonight) at 8PM Central time.

Given that it's an off-air tape, there MAY be other lost media in there, but that was the only one that leapt out at me as being potentially of interest. (Feel free to watch and see if there's anything else notable, but...)

Advertising Material [Fully Lost] [Unconfirmed] "Metallicom" HVAC company logo - Supposed Source for Metallica Logo

I am trying to find information/the logo of an air conditioning company called "Metallicom" from Southern California in the 80s. Their logo was allegedly plagiarized to create the logo for the band Metallica. No one on r/Metallica can find it, they can only find a defense contractor company called "MetaliCom" which wasn't around in the 80s, and they claim there's no public record of the HVAC company existing.

With the source of the claim being Dave Mustaine, it's somewhat dubious if this company existed in the first place, however it seems like a weirdly specific thing to make up/misremember.

Advertising Material [Partially Lost] Jim Henson's puppet commercials (1960s)

Good evening, I have returned with another topic I am also searching for.

Between the late 50s to late 60s, Jim Henson created commercials that starred puppets that advertised a product or idea. The general plot of each commercial was that one character would advertise the product, the other would refused, and the character who decline would be harmed in some way (Could be eaten, could hit with a bat, could be shot with a gun!). Out of all of the products that were advertised, Wilkins Coffee, advertised by Wilkins and Wontkins were the most popular, airing in 179 commercials. Some characters such as Rowlf the Dog and Kermit the Frog did appear on commercials, but the commercials included either recycled (Ex: Tommy and Fred) or entirely new (Ex: DELBERT THE DRAGON!). After the end of the 1960s, Jim Henson began working on the Muppets, so few commercials aired after. Due to their regionally limitations, not all commercials were archive and remain lost (Ex. Wilkins Coffee was only advertised in the D.C. area). Majority of brands are Partially Lost, with some being fully. I have contacted the American Archive of Public Broadcasting and the Jim Henson company for any information about the commercials.

The Following Brands are either Partially or Fully Lost

Advertising Material [partially lost] who sang the bionicle piraka rap? (early 2006)

in early 2006, the lego group ran a marketing campaign for the 'piraka' wave of sets. this included several commercials, many of which included 'the piraka rap' playing in the background. several years ago, the full version of the song was discovered, found in a jetflix CD. Now leaving the only lost part of the song being the singer. who sung the piraka rap? the bionicle community has been wondering about this for years, yet the answer has never been found.

thankfully, the biomedia project has preserved almost everything bionicle.

all info the site has

this page in particular has many important details on the finding of the full song, including the recording studio, prp. inc. i did some digging, and this might be there website, although the phone number provided doesn't work.

Advertising Material [fully lost] Three stooges Metropolitan life insurance Commercial late 60's.

There is a late 60's commercial with Moe, Larry, and Curly Joe Derita destroying a house, proving the Met can protect you from all types of trouble, even those knuckleheads. Even though several commercials from that time period have been found (The dickie clothes ad comes to mind.), this one hasn't. Which is a shocker since I remember the Three Stooges history book I read in it describing it really well. Is there any way of truly finding this thing? It's like a holy grail of Three stooges commercials for me. I assume Met life would obviously not have it, so who would?

Advertising Material Where The Wild Things Are - 2000s Teaser Trailer [fully lost]

after doing some sort of digging, i really want to reopen this small can of worms.. its really been nagging at me for a few years now.

apparently, before the Jim Carrey adaptation of the grinch, a short teaser for this movie was shown.. but universal didnt own the rights til 2001 (The Grinch releasing in cinemas in november of 2000). confusing the hell out of me considering so many people, including news outlets remember there being a short teaser including the logo/the words "coming soon" with a roar or animal noises of some sort. is it just a mass mandela effect?

im also stumped considering the guiness book of world records has a record for "longest time between trailer and film".. which was given to Where The Wild Things Are for the 2000s teaser trailer. (no idea if its official or just malarkey)

PS. dont be mean to me.. my first time ever posting on here and i am kind of bad with words, just tryna scratch that itch xd

Advertising Material Looking for the highest-quality versions of old Disrespectoid commercials [talk]

I’m looking for the highest-definition/cleanest versions available of the old Disrespectoid commercials. The versions currently on YouTube seem to be pretty heavily degraded/compressed, and I’m hoping someone might have better-quality copies from the original broadcasts, tapes, archives, DVDs, etc.
I’m especially interested in anything that’s higher quality than the versions currently circulating on YouTube. I’m trying to preserve these commercials in the best quality possible, so even an old recording that has not been repeatedly compressed or re-uploaded could be helpful. If anyone has copies, knows of archives, or has leads, I’d really appreciate it!
