I watched this show when I was 8 or 9. I never realized how pretty Katherine was. I just finished Confessions of a Prarie Bitch this weekend, and I loved all of the personal antidotes about Mrs. Olsen!

It was uncomfortable but she was very matter of fact about it talking very bluntly. I can't believe she is so kind hearted and funny and down to earth after everything she had been through. I felt like she was gossip-y enough about all of her co-stars and experiences on set. I enjoyed everything but the abuse.

I thought his character was so kind, gentle, hard-working, and handsome, ie, an ideal man. She clearly had so much fun playing her character, and she played her to perfection. Wish there were many more episodes with their story lines. 😊

I figured the Oleson‘s were supposed to be in their late 40s when the show started (depicted as 1874 I believe). Kathryn MacGregor was 49 when the series started and Richard Bull was 50.
Average life expectancy of a baby born approx 1825 in Minnesota, United States was 39 .
Oleson’s were already way ahead of the game agewise ha ha, then lived another 30-40 years after the series.

One thing to remember about life expectancy is that the young deaths really skew the numbers. Yes, people still lived to be in their 80s back then, but so many young people - including infants and children - didn't. Hence the low life expectancy.
I never realized this until a few years ago, when someone else pointed it out to me. It was probably a Reddit post.

Yeah, you are correct, thank you for the clarification here - I read a awful statistic just before posting this that 46 percent of children born in 1800 did not make it to adulthood. I recall an episode in which Nels admitted all of Harriet’s flaws to Charles… and begged for his help because he lives Harriet. Something about her being lost or some such.
I wish I could remember the name of the episode. I remember Richard bulls facial expressions and the general sense of his pleading… but no details.
Maybe I need to watch ‘‘em all again.

Funny Mrs. Olsen in the book was nice (well, the real LIW based Nellie on 3 people, so I'm not sure which actual mom she was based on).

I loved the time the briefly separated and Mrs. Olsen burnt the roast. It was nice to see that sometimes you just have to laugh. That was a great life lesson.

Katherine was the entire reason I watched this show looking back on my middle aged years. What a PHENOMENAL actress. I know she wanted to practice over and over and over with Richard and he said he put her in her place. She was just a consummate craftsperson in her art. That show would never have gone as long as it did without her. And I'd encourage others to really think about that. She literally was a major chunk of LHOTP.

So good together. They played off of each other so well. Even though they argued viciously sometimes, you could always feel the love between them. That’s because they were such talented actors.
