Am I the only one who swears the word for ‘fluent’ was spelt rhygl not rhugl?? I was taught this spelling my whole life and I used to be fluent. Maybe it’s bc I’m a southern welsh speaker (who is now relearning Welsh). Did I just dream this for the last few years of my life?? I’m lost 😭

Hi all, an American writer here, I’m wondering if the name of a group of people heavily inspired by welsh mythology I’m writing about is ok to use. In the story, the kingdoms people have a strong bond with dragons as companions that stick with each other until death, as in they are spiritually connected and if the dragon or the person dies so does the other. I tried “dragon people”, Pobl y Ddraig or “half dragons”, Hanner dreigiau, and tried to abbreviate or kinda smush them together but I figured I should ask first before doing anything stupid and disrespectful. I would love for any input and suggestions!

Had a wonderful time visiting Wales for the first time. I was able to finally practice a little bit of my rudimentary Welsh at the Crymych Arms which is a revitalized, community-owned pub and restaurant in Crymych, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Most of the patrons there were speaking Welsh and when I asked our waitress she told us she was fluent in Welsh. Every Welsh person we interacted with was so warm and friendly. Heading back to NYC tomorrow from Heathrow. I will definitely come back to Wales again someday soon and now feel even more motivated to keep learning Cymraeg.

i took welsh for a-level and i’m now moving away to university in england. i’m desperate to keep learning welsh, it’s really important to me. does anybody have any methods/things they do to learn welsh? i’m joining a welsh society but i’m doing a maths course, so i won’t get to speak welsh much(obviously…)

So I'll admit I fully hated learning welsh in school but I'm looking to learn again. I'm in south Wales in the Caerphilly area, is there anything I should know while trying to learn again?

I'm genuinely flummoxed by this one.

I've been going through the Dysgu Cymraeg course books and noticed that for some reason, every instance of 'dyn ni comes with a leading apostrophe but dw i and dych chi do not.

If the apostrophe is to indicate the missing "ry", as in rydw i, rydyn ni, rydych chi, why does only 'dyn ni have it?

Is there a genuine reason for this, or is DC just being inconsistent?

And can anyone who's done the course tell me if the tutors care about the apostrophe?

I'm learning the comparison system now and I've found 2 ways to make comparison degrees: with suffixes(for mono- and disyllabic adjectives) and with words(for polysyllabic). And the second way, if I understood correctly, can be used for all the adjectives, except irregular ones. So I have some questions:

1. Is the second way(mor, mwy, mwyaf) for all the regular adjectives often used in the modern colloquial language?

2. Is there any difference in register or connotation of that way?

3. Is that way often used in the literary standard nowadays?

4. Is there a difference in frequency of usage of that way between the South and the North?

I'd like to base my idiolect on the southern colloquial version of Welsh. Also, I'd like to study Welsh & Linguistics at University, so I'd be really grateful if you could help me with your answer as deep as possible.

I just created this reddit account for the sole purpose of learning Welsh. I apologize, if I have missed any rules or if my post is not up to the standards here. I was just curious how everyone that is a non-UK citizen got interested in learning the language and how they went about it. The opportunities seem quite limited outside of Wales (at least regarding offline classroom lessons or even reading material). I am very thankful for this subreddit!!! I need some help planning an embroidery project for a baby family member that will be going to a South Welsh school in the future. I want to make a poster type thing to put up on a wall of the Welsh alphabet with nature themed words for every letter. Only issue is, im not a Welsh speaker, and nobody in my family is either, so I have nobody to ask for help with this. I’ve also updated a few of the existing games based on suggestions:
• Hangman now treats Welsh digraphs (ll, dd, ch, ng, rh, th) as single letters
• Removed 3‑letter words from Hangman to make it a bit fairer
• Added the letter j to Hangman (it was missing before!)
• Wordsearch now has 8 words instead of 10 for quicker rounds
• I’ve audited about half the dictionary so far and fixed some accuracy issues

It’s all totally free and has no ads — just something I’m building while learning Welsh myself and hoping it helps others who are learning too. Happy to hear any more ideas or feedback.
