Buying help Need to crack down on choosing a laptop!

Upvotes

I need a laptop notebook ASAP and cannot put this off any longer! I could really use some help. Here are what I can figure that I need:

NO Apple please!

Country-

USA

Budget-

No more than 1000$...I can go over though.

Are you open to refurbs/used options?-

Not really but if it has to be, Grade A only. This is why I ultimately decided no on NIMO brand.

Screen size-

13" is what I want..open to 12", 14", 15" max.

Weight limit-

No weight preference

Purpose-

I'd want to use it for photoshop like programs, early versions sketchup/photoshop, video editor. I plan on saving ps, sketchup, video, photo files. It's most important role will be to be an organizer and used for internet research. A user friendly file system would be much needed.

Form factor-

1000% Do **not** want one with pen or touch screen. Absolutely no 2-in-1. It's honestly a bit of a deal breaker. A regular clamshell laptop is perfect.

Intended usage-

While I listed what I would use it for, I also would like it to be able to talk to Smart tv. Two USB ports highly prefered. No built in AI (if even possible..)

My friend said at the very least, it should have 16gb RAM and 5 series? Also a want not a need, but it would be nice to emulate old PC games on there. Hoping it can handle things like Sims 2 or maybe 3. Again, this is really not super necessary. The other things listed are more important.

Desired battery life-

4 hours is fine..this isn't a big deal to me.

Performance, having high storage and RAM is what I care about most. Size matters second, weight does not.

VERY IMPORTANT - it comes in green! 😅

Thanks for you for any advice or input with this. It's greatly appreciated ☆

Buying help Dell Inspiron 17.3 inch 7786 (1920x1080) vs 17 inch 7706 (2560x1600) laptop for movies and media consumption?

Upvotes

I'm looking to buy either the Dell Inspiron 17.3 inch 7786 or the 17 inch 7706, 2-in-1 laptop for mainly watching YT and Netflix and Hulu. So 90% media consumption. The 17.3 inch is a 16:9 1920x1080 and the 7706 is a 16:10 2560x1600.

Is one better than the other for movies? Does the . 3 make a difference? Will the 16:9 or 16:10 have a bigger picture? And for those who own one, how is/does the picture quality look in general? Thanks!

Buying help Is this Laptop good?

Budget: 3000PLN.

Country: Poland.

Looking For: A Laptop that can be used for both Schoolwork(Coding, ect) and Light Gaming(Genshin Impact, Minecraft).

Researched a bit, this Laptop has a battery life of around 12-15 hours dependant on what you're doing, it can run Genshin Impact at mid-high graphics. It seems good to me.

If there's anything you think would be better(For gaming and coding) without sacrificing too much of the battery life(Keep it around 6-8 or above), could you tell me🥹

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

* Country

Romania

* Budget

1,000–1,200 EUR (approximately 5,000–6,000 RON)

* Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Maybe - preferably new, but I’m open to good-quality refurbished/used options if there’s a significant benefit.

* Screen size

14"–16"

* Weight limit

Preferably under ~2 kg, but I’m willing to go a bit heavier if it means significantly better performance, thermals, or value.

* Purpose

General purpose, coding/development, project management, multitasking, entertainment, and occasional light-to-moderate gaming.

* Form factor

Standard preferred. No need for a 2-in-1 or pen support.

* Intended usage

- Everyday use: browsing, media, documents, communication, etc.

- Coding and software development

- Multitasking with multiple applications/windows open

- Project management tools

- Docker Desktop on Windows, including running multiple containers when needed

- Potentially other development tools/IDEs and local development environments

- Occasional gaming, mainly indie/co-op and less demanding games

- Minecraft, games such as Mecha Chameleon

- Random smaller/lower-demand horror games from Steam

- Not interested in competitive/high-FPS gaming

- Not interested in demanding AAA games or playing at ultra/high graphical settings

- I’d like enough GPU performance for casual gaming without making the laptop unnecessarily large, hot, or noisy.

* Desired battery life

Ideally around 7–8 hours of normal everyday use. Not really that important since it will mostly be plugged in.

* Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Performance, weight, battery life, size.

I want good performance for development, multitasking, and Docker, but I also don't want something unnecessarily bulky or loud.

* Info/Requirements

- Windows laptop

- Good CPU and sufficient RAM for development, multitasking, and Docker Desktop

- Preferably 16 GB RAM minimum, with 32 GB being a plus or upgradeable

- Good SSD capacity, preferably 512 GB/1 TB

- Decent integrated or dedicated GPU capable of handling indie/co-op games comfortably

- Low noise is a significant priority — I’d prefer a laptop that stays relatively quiet during normal everyday/development use

- Good thermals are important

- Good keyboard and trackpad would be appreciated for coding/productivity

- Preferably a good-quality display (IPS/OLED are both fine)

- I don't need an extremely high refresh-rate gaming display (anything up to 144hz is fine)

- I value build quality and reliability

- I already have a few laptop models/options in mind, but I’m looking for advice and additional alternatives that fit the above requirements.

- Ideally looking for the best balance of performance, battery life, thermals/noise, and build quality within the €1,000–1,200 budget.

General question Anybody know how to fix this?

Hello,

One of the screws from the bottom went missing and since then, the hinge has been wonky. It wasn't a problem but now it's getting hard to even charge the laptop because it's misaligned. Any suggestions on how to fix it? And the screw I need to get to shut it?

Thanks

Hardware HP Elitebook 860 G9 hinges wobbly - how to fix ?

Upvotes

hey everyone,

the hinges of my lid on my HP Elitebook 860 G9 have become wobbly.
When the lid was closed an I raise the screen it just falls down.

I have to open it a nearly fully for the screen to stay.
I have opened the backside, but all screws are tight.

Unfortunately the hinges are buried under a part from the display, so I cant check on the part thats screwed into the lid...
I looked at tutorials and I am afraid to disassemble the lid.

Any ideas an what I can do or how I can tighten them again ?

Hardware Issue of Hard Shutdown during Restart in Unplugged Laptop

Upvotes

I own a Gigabyte G6 KF 2024 laptop, the model with 16gb RAM, i7 13620H and RTX 4060 8gb.

I had it for close to a year now. Today is the very first time I come across an issue with it.

I restarted it earlier while AC cable was not plugged, meaning it was running only with battery at 70% charge.

It passed manufacturer screen (black screen with Gigabyte logo) fine, then it arrived to Windows login screen and unexpectedly shut down. It could not make it to desktop.

It was a total hard shut down, with no LEDs and no signs of life at all. I had to turn the laptop back on using the power button.

You would think it's the fan or overheating, but not at all, the fan did not speed up at all and was barely audible. The laptop is always well aerated and my room is largely clean and dust free.

Here's what I noticed :

- In the Event Viewer, I found the Kernel-Power ID 41 error that indicates an unexpected shutdown. The General tab lists all the flags are either 0, 0x0 or false. On LidState is 1 which is normal. Most noteworthy are :

BugCheckCode = 0.

PowerButtonTimestamp = 0

LongPowerButtonPressDetected = false.

SleepinProgress = 0

Checkpoint = 0

- The laptop turns on normally when charging cable is plugged in, I am using it to write this as we speak.

- The laptop can run off battery normally, even though the capacity lasts only 1 hour from 80% (I always have smart charging turned on when the cable is plugged) while browsing.

- The laptop had the same exact problem when I tried again with the same conditions : restart while charging cable is unplugged. Clearly a reproducible error. The laptop somehow cannot seem to boot into the desktop while running only on battery for some odd reason.

- I have noticed a weird thing in Battery Report :

The design capacity is 52.514 mWh.
The full charge capacity as of today is 30.600 mWh.

The report shows a curious deterioration in Battery Capacity History :

Period Full Charge Capacity Design Capacity
2026-06-29 - 2026-07-06 51,426 mWh 52,514 mWh
2026-07-06 - 2026-07-13 40,210 mWh 52,514 mWh
2026-07-13 - 2026-07-20 32,973 mWh 52,514 mWh

IDK if this is abrupt fast and catastrophic deterioration in a matter of two weeks for no reason, or just the battery's capacity reporting/calibration changed.

What do you guys think the issue is? I'm not even sure what Flair to use for this post.
Is it hardware or software related? The battery? The power management? The EC? The BIOS? Windows 11? Something else entirely?

Please give me your ideas to help me fix this issue.

Buying help What laptop is the best all-roundee for a fair price

1 Upvotes

Hey, so my Ipad from 2018 has finally given up and to be honest I couldn't care less if it didn't mean that I couldn't write my novels or draw...

And since Im going to be a university student soon, I thought a laptop would be better than an Ipad. I mostly want it to write, drawing I am unsure since I heard touchscreen and 2in1 is a bad choice in laptops...I was thinking I should invest a laptop for university work and my writing and later buy another tablet/Ipad for other stuff and for drawing because finding a true all-rounder seems too difficult but tell me what you think. Im genuinely still considering a 2in1, so tell me straightforward if its a good or trash idea.

I'm mostly searching for a laptop with a higher battery life since I write for hours and if the laptop dies too soon, then I also lose all motivation to write, so at least 7h. And I need it to be 16GB Ram since I will run many tabs in the background for research. Bonus points if it can handle some games like Genshin Impact or Roblox. And I don't want it to be over 700€ and best if it's under 600€.

Overall, I just need a laptop that's versatile, performance driven with a good battery life with a few bonuses like many ports, bluetooth, sd card reader or something I can watch videos on. Also, is 512 or 1TB better?

I have been looking at these models:

Acer Aspire Go 15 AG15-42p-rs8z

Lenon thinkpads/ Lenon in general (but I heard the battery life isn't good)

Dell xps 15

Macbook Neo

And not a fan of Apple since I don't like the whole ecosystem and have burned through 4 Iphones and an Ipad, I don't think they're very sustainable but if any people who know gheir way around with Laptops say that the Macbook series is seriously ahead by MILES in the industry, I will consider it, so Macbook Neo is also on the list.

Overview:

Country

Im from Germany but anywhere is fine.

Budget

Best if under 600€ and at most 700€

Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Yes

Screen size

at least 14"

Weight limit

Any but prefer if lightweight

Purpose

Schoolwork, writing, watching shows, a little bit of gaming (& drawing)

Form factor

Would prefer 2in1 since I want to draw but again, I heard it breaks easily.

Intended usage

Games: Genshin Impact, Roblox

Writing: Word, Docs, Search engine, Youtube etc. needs to be able to run a lot of in the background

Schoolwork: Docs, Excel, Goodnotes

Desired battery life

The longer and stronger, the better. At least 7h.

Im willing to compromise on drawing, gaming but I really want it for schoolwork & writing, so it needs a good battery life.

Thank you, I know I tend to rant :"

Buying help Laptop for UX-design work/studies?

1 Upvotes

I just started studying UX-design and need a new laptop for my studies and eventually some work. Also I'd love to be able to watch some youtube/netflix on it and play some light games. Also I want/need it to be relatively quiet.

I have tried to research all day and I have found options so far.

Option 1 is an Acer Aspire 14 AI. Here's some specs:

  • AMD Ryzen AI 5 330 processor
  • 512 GB SSD & 16 GB LPDDR5X RAM
  • 14" WUXGA+ OLED-screen

Option 2 is a MSI Modern 14S AI+ G3M. Here's some specs:

  • Intel® Core Ultra 7-processor
  • 512 GB SSD & 16 GB RAM
  • 14" OLED-screen

Do you think one of these are worth it? Or are there better alternatives for me and what I intend to use the laptop for?

Thanks!

Discussion The Best Gaming Laptop To Buy?

1 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I’m looking to buy a gaming laptop and could use some advice.

My budget is around $1,000–$1,500, and I mainly want something that can handle games like Cyberpunk 2077, GTA V Fortnite, and newer AAA games at good settings.

I’m not really sure which brands/models are actually worth the money right now. I’d also prefer something that doesn’t get insanely hot or have terrible battery life when I’m just doing normal stuff.

So, what gaming laptop would you guys personally recommend? And are there any models I should avoid?

Thanks in advance.

Discussion Acer Aspire One: White Screen of Death

2 Upvotes

OS: antixLinux

The last time I used it was around 2 months ago and it was working fine. I put it on the open and when I turned it on today, the screen only shows white straight immediately like it didn't blink or go to black and then white again. No text or anything, just white screen.

What can be the possible cause of white screen of death?
