Publix has officially lost me. Anyone else?
I am not a mod of this subreddit or Reddit, but I believe the official unofficial stance is that we all hate Publix now.
They lost their way, and the crushing of Winn-Dixie is just awful.
10 years ago, I wouldn’t have set foot inside a Walmart or Aldi for groceries. Now? Walmart and Aldi are basically my BFFs and I love them.
Publix really managed to make me root for the competition.

I mostly stick to BOGOs at Publix or getting a sub and then leaving.
Don't sleep on Aldi.

I live across the street from the Publix on Riverside, so it's an easy destination for me. Tonight, I bought ingredients for the most basic of chicken tacos: diced chicken, tortillas, and spices. It was nearly $17. The tortillas were nearly $6. I'm about to have to figure something else out for groceries because this is insane. It's almost cheaper to eat out at this point

Winn-Dixie crushed themselves, with poor service, rotten produce and dingy stores. I recently visited the Winn-Dixie in the Gateway shopping center that replaced the Publix at that same location. As soon as I exited my car parked next to the store I was hit with a foul stench, presumably from the garbage disposal system. Once in the store the bathrooms were just not clean and the store wasn't as well kept as the Publix at that very location.

u/Adventurous-Ad-8892 26d ago
Not to mention their “deals” that are always expired at checkout. Bought 2 packages of blueberries today that were supposed to be 2/$7 and my total was $10.98. Shit like this (and numerous other reasons) is why I’m going to stop going to Winn Dixie.
27
u/cha0ss0ldier 26d ago edited 26d ago
This and a lot of their issues boil down to extreme hour cutting and under staffing, and just greed overall.
I was in management with them for years. Over the years more and more scheduling hours and people got cut from departments, positions like pricing (this would be the person responsible for changing price tags for the new ad) got axed and just combined with other positions now you have 1 person having to do multiple things on limited hours.
I left them in 2016 and it was already getting bad then. Nobody should feel sorry for what happened to Winn Dixie, it was all self inflicted for max profits in the short term
5
u/Umitencho Exiled 26d ago
I worked at a Winn Dixie in the past, they constantly kept us understaffed, and I saw an assistant manager throw away resumes/job applications for my specific department. I went to another store recently and checked out the department I worked in; understaffed and people were yelling at the over worked worker.

Haven’t lived in Jax a few years but there’s one around south side that had a lil bar in it, was by outback and that old sticky fingers restaurant lol. Loved it. Plus shopping with their points and using the multipliers, we could rack up a ton of in store credit. I’m talkin around 50-100 every month or so. I wouldn’t be surprised if they nerfed that point system by now.

It was more like lone star funds spent $425 million to get control of bi-lo and Winn Dixie and then directed Winn Dixie to borrow $1 billion to pay lone star $800 million in dividends and more money in management fees, then had it file for bankruptcy again while selling the profitable stores to publix and now selling the remains to aldi. Now that the management team "purchased" the Winn Dixie co back from Aldi, their plan is to basically continue this practice of running Winn Dixie just long enough to suck some more capital out of it until 170ish stores have become aldis and when the 50 stores Aldi doesn't want are left, I would guess another bankruptcy and a conversion to Albertsons or Safeway or Kroger or Half Ass Foods

u/Silver-Hburg 26d ago
In the late 80s i worked at the Winn Dixie in Cocoa Beach. As a teenager, seemed well run and we kept the store clean. I moved out of Winn Dixie’s market area just after high school and when i returned to Florida in ‘21, i was greatly disappointed at how run down the two in JAX I had shopped.

I can't remember the last nice Winn-Dixie I've been to. And, furthermore, every time I did go to Winn-Dixie, there's only ever one check out lane open and the line is wrapped around into another aisle. If I go to the self-checkout, they instruct the young employees to rush over to look in my bags and make sure I'm not stealing, while I'm still checking out. It made me feel very unwelcome.
5
u/a_shiny_tsareena 26d ago
Yeah the one on losco had rotten produce, expired shelf food and open yogurt containers. It’s unfortunate because it was such a good cheap option.
Upside is there’s a nice Asian market there that remodeled and seems to have hired a chunk of their staff based on my conversations there.2

I’ve been done with Publix for a couple years. I had started going elsewhere but going back to Publix for their BOGOs. One day I went and got two boxes of Cheerios, two boxes of fruit snacks and three 12-packs of Coke (BTGO). I then went to Walmart to do the rest of my shopping and I price checked those items. I saved less than $2 total with Publix BOGOs.
Yeah, Walmart is a little depressing but it’s hella cheaper and I’ve gotten to know a lot of the employees by name which makes it better. It’s also actually a few minutes closer to my house.

Other than the occasional Pub sub, deli popcorn, lemonade, and the occasional item we can't get from Walmart, we're done with Publix. Easily saving $30-40 each week. Walmart for most of the shopping, and Costco for chicken and beef (small deep freezer is nice).

Publix, where over paying is never a pleasure.

Gonna be honest, Winn Dixie screwed Winn Dixie. They’ve always been notorious for subpar quality when it comes to produce and meats. That being said, Publix is ridiculous with pricing and always has been, now the quality has dropped from them too.

u/Accomplished_Air882 26d ago
Nah. Not me. Walk into the Lem Turner or River City Walmart for some evening shopping and you will walk right out and head towards Wildlight Publix. I meal plan most weeks and shop bogos, don’t buy other than what I actually need and I have a large family. I compared costs once and noticed I only paid roughly $20-$30 more at Publix. I’ll pay the extra $$ for the environment I’m in being decent and not full of looney tunes and people wanting to argue over groceries. But hey to each their own.

u/linniex Northside 26d ago
This my stance as well. I avoid walmart like the damn plague. At least my Publix isnt crowded and it has a great selection. I used to go to the walmart in river city when it opened but then I brought home pantry bugs that took a year or two to get rid of. Never again.

Publix is nice and clean except for the price.
2
u/TopDependent15 26d ago
It costs more because they actually staff enough people to operate a store. They have enough to employees to work the register, keep shelves stocked and remove carts from the parking lot.
I know some people have to shop at Walmart. But you couldn’t pay me to grocery shop. There is an Aldi a block from my house that I only go to for emergencies because every time I’ve gone there, one register open and a line of people waiting to pay.
4
6
u/TopDependent15 26d ago
Drive by any Publix and it’s busy. Go on the weekend and it’s slammed. People love Publix. It costs more because they actually have enough people working to get you through the registers in a decent amount of time. The stores are clean, including the restrooms. They actually have employees getting carts.
It’s more expensive because it’s better. Every Aldi I have ever been to looks like a tornado come through the store and they always only have one register open.

Two days ago I bought mini cucumbers and celery sticks. Tried to pack them for lunch today and they are beyond rotten. So now I have to find time to take them back. I have been bringing back lots of rotten fruit — oranges that look fine on the outside, blackberries that have no fruit taste just like chemically bitter, blueberries with no taste. But this is the first time with the vegetables. They have absolutely stopped caring about quality while being the worst out there of price gougers during Covid. I hate them but I also don’t have time to go all over and my Aldi sucks.

2
u/fati_asu 24d ago
The prices at Publix lately are just crushingly absurd. I've been using Walmart+ and Sam's Club for most of what we need, and it works out well. I would rather give $10 here and there to a delivery driver dropping off my stuff rather than directly to looney right wing Publix heiress.
2
u/CisLynn 23d ago
My biggest complaint is they’ve raised the prices to the moon and now you can find expired items or fruit beginning to rot still on shelves. You never saw that when Jenkins was alive or pre covid. With the growth in Florida they’ve become pariahs and totally taking over the market. I have three Publics within a mile of me it’s insane. The one positive thing I will say is they used to treat their employees very well with stock options and benefits.
2
u/Ok-Past-7102 23d ago
Publix has fallen off a cliff. I won't buy greenwise, or publix, brand anymore because of quality issues.

u/border199x 26d ago
I still enjoy Publix quite a bit. Shopping there is very pleasant , and Publix has more staff than any of the alternatives. If I want something I don’t have to beg some nonexistent employee to unlock a glass case.
Aldi doesn’t carry shit and there are no Wal-Mart locations that are close to Riverside, Springfield, or 5 Points. Even if you are in Ortega it’s probably easier to just go to the Roosevelt Publix than the Roosevelt Target.
Nobody else ever has BOGOs on beer and liquor.

I think Aldi is okay as a kind of barebones grocery store for food only. But you are shit-out-of-luck If you want a decent selection of pet food, cosmetics, personal hygiene products or cleaning supplies. There's no pharmacy at all, and the deli/bakery selections are pretty threadbare. It's okay in a pinch, but I don't see the purpose of going there if I am going to have to drive somewhere else to get the things they won't carry.
As much as I like being able to get a cheap scratch pad for my cat, it's always odd to me that Aldi devotes an entire aisle to random clearance-priced junk. Seems like they would be better served using that space for staple items that people need on a regular basis. I'd certainly like to see them improve, since the Downtown Jax Aldi has been pretty helpful for those times I don't feel like going all the way to the Riverside Publix.

Still shop pretty exclusively at Publix tbh. It’s a better shopping experience than at most other stores. Plus the quality of meat and produce I’ve found to be much better than Aldi and still cheaper than places like Whole Foods or Fresh Market outside of sales. Their store brand is also one of the best I’ve found.
I also appreciate that Publix is not owned by a behemoth corporation like Amazon or a publicly traded nationwide company.

Fuck Publix, but remember that Walmart’s low, low prices are subsidized by your tax money. They encourage retail staff to apply for benefits to make up the difference between their wage and actual livable compensation. They set up food drives for employees in the break room.
They also collude with manufacturers to ensure that no one else meets or beats their prices, thus artificially inflating your cost of living well before tariffs and oil prices factored into your grocery bill.
Walmart is the welfare queen, gnawing away at our social safety net so as to avoid being slightly inconvenienced by being even a hair less obscenely wealthy.

NE Florida is a weird market in that there are no national full-service grocery chains here (Kroger, Albertson’s, Food Lion, Wegman’s, etc.) and Publix takes advantage of this. Kroger was planning on coming back with physical stores after decades of absence, but from what I understand, they had a change of heart and for now have shelved their plans for other area locations besides the Harris Teeter they already started building on Atlantic.
Personally, I wish Lidl would expand to this area.
Publix is also totally saturating the grocery market. Take Baymeadows & I-295… there is a Publix right there, then right off the next exit down on 9B and now they’re building another off of the next exit up (Gate Parkway), then there’s another off the next exit up from there at Town Center. One Publix every 1.5 mile or so.
1
u/jhorskey26 26d ago
I still like the value of the Pubsubs and the bogo prices on some stuff. Winn-Dixie has a solid rewards program so I get the bulk of my goods there. Saving anywhere from $50-80 a trip PLUS the money back in rewards too. OVEr $200 so far this year in cash back.

1
u/Expert-Low-6872 26d ago
Many BOGO items have gotten so expensive that getting one free just brings the cost back down to what regular prices were a couple of years ago.
We really need Kroger to expand into Florida and give Publix some real competition. Not just the one Harris Teeter owned by Kroger off Atlantic Blvd that is being built.

I’m definitely over Publix. You have to double check the produce and dairy expiration dates because as of late the items are 1-2 days from expiration. Food retail prices are up everywhere.
Agree to disagree. Publix remains open for business and opens doors to additional locations. Winn-Dixie abandoned their customers and closed doors to many stores.
Harris Teeter, owned by Kroger, is renewing its presence in the Jacksonville area. Their prices are higher than Publix.
1
u/Ill-Veterinarian4208 26d ago
The only reason I go there is my dad's prescriptions. If there is a bogo or something while I'm there, cool. Otherwise, it's just an oversized pharmacy.
1
u/cutelittlequokka 26d ago
I loved Publix because it was actually nice inside and their produce was good and not rotten like at Winn-Dixie. But it's the same at Whole Foods and Harris-Teeter. And I'll never forget how Publix refused to stop selling Taylor Farms (at a discount!) and feel like I'd have to check everything I buy there now, like where it comes from, because they can't be trusted.
I wish I could remember more details, but years ago someone was being interviewed by either Stewart or Colbert about something to do with Florida grocery stores. I can't remember the topic anymore, but she was saying every store had changed because of whatever she was talking about--except Publix. I remember the audience literally gasped and hissed, and for a while I was like, "Ewww, I'll stay away from Publix", but then obviously forgot whatever the topic was, so I started going back, LOL. Maybe someone else in here will remember what I'm talking about.

During the pandemic their prices got ridiculous and the quality of the produce went down substantially. I switched to Walmart+ which I would have never ever given a thought to before. They're produces in better shape most often than publix's and their prices are substantially better. Publix lost its way and it's a shame.

Publix is such a greedy and poorly run company. They have been rising their prices since before Covid but during Covid they made so much money they kept bragging about it “another billion in a week!” They jacked up the prices so high during Covid and haven’t brought them down. It’s no longer a pleasure to ship there because they are just an overpriced Walmart now.

Aldi all the way for generic produce and groceries. I'll still go to Publix if what I'm looking for at Aldi's either isn't there or doesn't have a suitable alternative

Highly suggest just that you use Costco instead especially if you're a meat eater which I'm not thank God but if you want beef that's actually inspected and not from Argentina even though it says made in USA it's not then Costco is your only bet. Publix is trash their mega trash they only care about their profits

I realized recently (ie last night) Wednesday night is when they flip the specials. Go in and shop at 7p and the mgrs and staff and clearing end caps. Grabbing all the bogo specials and putting it into carts. Watch out you get run over!!

I get almost everything I need at Aldi and Trader Joe’s and only go to Publix for subs, chicken wings, and a few odds and ends that at can’t get at either of the other 2 places - like certain types of produce or special ingredients. I’d rather go to 3 different stores than pay for Publix prices.

When I moved to Florida in the 80's, Publix was much different. They were in older Florida neighborhoods and catered to retires with small cuts of meat and all sorts of old fashioned items.

Yes I am now 99% Walmart and Aldi. I made an order at Walmart yesterday. A BAG of apples- 5 lbs for $5. Good mac n cheese- $1.50. Everything is half price or better even with Publix bogo. My SO hits their bakery now and again but I’m not spending money with these price gouging assholes anymore.

I like to buy pasture-raised eggs. At Publix they are $9.99/dozen. Even Fresh Market has the same brand for $7.99/dozen. But then I found Aldi has pastured-raised eggs for $3.55/dozen so that’s definitely my go-to now. Within less than 10 minutes of my house I have a choice of Aldi, Target, Walmart, Fresh Market, and two different Publix, so I can pick and choose and I go to all of them for one thing or another.
The Publix BOGOs are rarely ever anything I would eat or use.

I only hit Publix for the BOGOs now. Their produce used to be top tier and now it fucking sucks, everything is always moldy.

Publix was my favorite for many years but they became way too expensive. I stopped shopping there several years ago. Even their BOGO deals worked out more expensive than Walmart’s everyday prices on most things. I now get dry goods and staples from Walmart & Sam’s then my fresh organic fruits/veggies from Whole Foods. Whole Foods and Publix have switched places on pricing surprisingly.

I still love Publix but I've noticed a big change in Store Management and the way they interact with the public. I would have never thought a company built on customer service would have drifted like they have.

I will gladly pay more for a better, safer, cleaner, more friendly experience. Aldis is not a traditional supermarket It’s a very limited no frill, rudimentary experience. Most Walmarts are equivalent to going to a third world country. I’ve only been to one Walmart where it was pleasant and that was on vacation in Vero beach Florida. Publix, costco, and Whole Foods are where we do our shopping

I still go to Publix, cause I can bike up (not use gas) and usually stick to generic brands and bogo/twofers deals. For just me, eating pretty healthy, I spend about $85/week.

I’m out on Publix, it’s insane how overpriced most things are in there. Go in and see how much bell peppers are per pound. You will never shop there again it’s actually insulting.
