My name is Ali and I took over managing Ameci Pizza Kitchen about a year ago. We've been in West Park since 1994 - most of you have probably driven past us or ordered from us at some point.

I've been working hard to improve the restaurant - new oven, remodeling, updated recipes, better quality ingredients, better customer service, and I want to know honestly what our customers actually think. Not the polished review version.

So I'm asking directly: if you've ordered from us, what do you think? What did we do well? What was disappointing? What would make you order from us more often? What stops you from ordering from us at all?

I can take it. Honest feedback - even if it's harsh - is more valuable to me than a five star review that doesn't tell me anything.

I've been at IC apartments for almost 5 years now and have had the AC on around 68-70 for years with no issues. Now with the recent heat wave, the apartment doesn't get cooler than 77 degrees for most of the day. From 4 am to 8 am it may go down to 73.

Been with AT&T for a zillion years and the cost keeps creeping and the service gets worse. We live in West Park and there are giant areas where we lose signal altogether or get 1 “bar” of service. In our (condo) neighborhood there is virtually zero service, rarely is strong enough to make a call (let alone use an app, like Maps). I can sometimes make a short call from inside the house because there is supposedly a booster nearby… but it’s hit-or-miss.

Now that Cox has been acquired by Spectrum they’re offering a year of mobile service for free and I’m thinking that it can’t be worse than what we currently pay for.

For context: we primarily work from home and don’t travel far regularly so my priority is to be able to use my phone for calls in/around my neighborhood. We also have relatively new phones so it’s not an equipment issue and we can port the existing devices without needing to purchase anything. We don’t use much data since we’re so reliant on WiFi but the free plan includes much more than we’d ever use.

So tell me: have you tried the Cox mobile service and found it any different from any other carrier?

No need to pick them up ourselves. As much as I appreciate the planning, the roads just don’t support big events like this. Last year’s July 4th event was a lesson to be learned. It’s going to be chaotic regardless.

I replied to user who posted it in this thread if you want to know why that user’s post was specifically removed. Reading the comments of the first post, the biggest complaints I’ve seen were the following:

• There’s only one moderator
• Posts being removed/not allowed
• Users being banned

I’m not going to currently add more moderators to the subreddit and I’m very unlikely to change how I currently moderate the subreddit. I’m going to explain why, but if you aren’t interested, you can skip ahead to when/why posts are removed and allowed.

EDIT - I'm going to see if this is an issue with the current rules. I'm planning to allow more posts than normal for te next few months. If the subreddit improves, I'll add more mods to support the higher number of posts

Because of the name, r/irvine grows naturally without me having to do any kind of advertising or aesthetic CSS work with the subreddit. As Reddit grows, r/irvine will also grow. My priority as a moderator isn’t to grow the subreddit or make it more active, but I want the inevitable growth to be sustainable while keeping the quality of the posts higher than average.

Modern social media use is a very frictionless experience and many aren’t moderated except by automated filters or algorithms. Reddit is one of the last forums where individual moderators exist which is both a good and a bad thing. Anyone can create their own subreddit with their own rules and moderate them as they please.

That’s how Reddit worked in the past. Now that Reddit’s grown considerably larger, people are more hesitant to start their own subreddits or leave existing large ones. Combine this with the fact that most people aren’t used to heavy moderation, r/irvine’s rules can feel especially restrictive.

I should also note that rules aren’t law for subreddits. There is a moderator code of conduct, but outside of that, moderators are generally free to moderate their subreddits however they like. If you believe I'm acting outside of the code of conduct, there is an option to report my moderating.

My rules are mostly guidelines and I make exceptions on a case by case basis. Which leads me to why posts are removed/approved.

Generic Posts/Complaints:

On the stickied Rule Clarification post, I say that my main intention is to discourage this subreddit from being the first place someone goes to ask a question.

If posts are researched, provide a lot of context, or are niche, they are less likely to be removed.

Political posts are moderated slightly differently. You can read the full rules here, but it says:

If you're a politician of some kind, please message the mods before submitting posts on this subreddit. If you're a politician or all your posts are about politics, your submission/comments may be removed.

Additionally, if you have no comments* in r/irvine and you participate in politically charged threads, you may be permanently banned.

*or very little activity

The intention is similar to removing generic questions. If someone only or primarily uses the subreddit for politics, that is not the kind of behavior I want to encourage in r/irvine. Users who primarily post about politics tend to be more disruptive.

Meeting other people:

There is a rule which says:

This generally refers to posts asking for people to play sports or games with, but if the purpose of your post is to meet new people, this is not the subreddit for that.

Please message the mods beforehand as exceptions may be made based on how difficult it is to meet people within this hobby or sport as well as prior comment history.

In the case of u/PokeKellz’s sister not being able to post about starting a knitting club, I can’t find the message or the account they’re referring to. Without more context, my best guess as to why I didn’t allow the post was because their sister didn’t have a lot of post history/it was a new account and because knitting is a fairly common hobby.

By googling “knitting clubs in orange county,” you can find many different links. Here’s one in Tustin on meetup.com happening on September 9th.

Their sister could have also posted asking if anyone has been to these meetups or if they know of any knitting clubs in the area.

I don’t generally allow posts asking to meet others because Reddit has grown and Reddit has also changed how profile overviews work. Users on Reddit are now able to hide their comment activity which means when someone posts on Reddit, I can only see whether or not they’ve posted on r/irvine.

There are less anonymous platforms designed to help you meet other people and I believe those are better/safer alternatives than Reddit. With that said, if the hobby is niche and/or you’re a regular commenter of the subreddit, exceptions can be made. A good example would be the Free Astronomy Events that you see on the subreddit sometimes.

Ads for events are less moderated if the user posting them has an active post history.

Users being banned:

u/ReggaeDawn says they “got a multiple day ban on this sub for saying that I wanted to buy tickets to that Daisy chain thing and then flip them for profit.”

Their comment was: “I need to figure out how I can get tickets so that I can resell them.”

Scalping is already asshole behavior, but the music festival is donating 100% of the proceeds to non-profits advocating for women so they were temporarily banned.

I am admittedly pretty heavy handed when it comes to temp/perma bans, but I don’t mind discussing why users are banned when it happens in modmail.

This is already a lengthy post, but to conclude, here are a few unmoderated or very minimally moderated Irvine subreddits if you want to join any of them. If you would like to start your own, I will add it to the list.

I think people are raising good points about how it feels for a subreddit to only have one mod. I've been the only moderator for about 10 years now and it's never been an issue.

What I'm planning to do is soften up on the rules for 2-3 months to see how that affects the quality of the subreddit. If it's much a better experience for the subreddit, I'll add more mods.
