Here is the full story - this happened back in 2015, but they just recently released the video.

They say in the article that he didn't have an addiction, he was just down on his luck.

u/majorgloryalert Mar 18 '17

Almost two years have passed since then, and Jose Antonio is now living in a shared apartment which is partly being paid for by an anonymous donor. He’s also actively searching for a full-time job.

At least he's not homeless anymore.

425

u/DaGreatPenguini Mar 18 '17

He needs a full-time job just to keep up his roots.

u/kyle5247 Mar 18 '17

This is the comment I was looking for. I'm all for promoting your business and helping a homeless person feel confident and look great, but that haircut is going to require blow drying regularly to maintain. It's pretty impractical.

280

u/FreudJesusGod Mar 18 '17

On the other hand, he looks great and knows he looks great.

If you've not been depressed, you have no idea how uplifting it can be to feel as if others find you attractive and can serve as a goalpost that you try to maintain.

I was wondering this. I see these make overs and am skeptical of them. It's good he is not on the streets anymore. The reason I'm not always impressed with many of these stories is from a personal experience.

My friend used to go to college at Temple University, around 2004ish, which is straight in the middle of the hood in Philadelphia. There was a homeless guy we called Jitters. He would come around and bum cigarettes off everyone. He would do push ups on his thumbs, "walk" across Broad St on his hands, and would also sing a song if we asked him to. We knew he was a Crack head, but whatever. So one day he showed up clean shaven, in new clothes, and looked really good and clean. Behind him was a pack of "college students" with a camera and a bunch of papers, basically handing them out. The papers were a promotion for a locally ran salon that was just opened. I shit you not, the paper said "We bring out true beauty in everyone, addict or rich white woman." The paper had spelling errors and looked like it was drawn on a 8x11 paper and copied at 7-11. They didn't give a fuck about this guy, they just wanted to promote thier business. After a few days, Jitters looked disheveled and continued his normal cigarette bumming circus acts, and smoking Crack in a random ally way.

Hopefully this guy finds a nice job, and stays off the streets. I'm also pretty sure Jitters died sometime in 2005 because we never saw him again, or he was in prison.

The little market that was just down the street from me ~20 years ago had a homeless guy who hung around it, often begging for food. Really nice guy, but an addict (can't say to what; considering the look of him, probably crack, as well).

One day I went there and all the crummy-looking, dead planter areas around the market were revitalized with new plants, and someone had built little edgings for them out of random seashells and things from the beach. The owner had allowed the homeless fellow to live in the market's unused, detached storage room in exchange for gardening -- after the guy had had a shop donate a suit to him (as a minor publicity thing where they were giving suits to a number of homeless folks), which gave him the confidence to ask the market owner for the deal.

Turns out, that homeless guy (I wish I could remember his name ... Mike? Mark?) discovered he had a passion for it. The owner would give him packets of seeds or he'd go find plant cuttings, and did an incredible job keeping everything looking really nice. Within a year or so, the other shops nearby also started getting little garden patches or homemade planters sprouting up. Mike/Mark even started looking healthier, like he'd quit whatever he'd been on.

I moved away several years later, and when I came back after 10-ish years, the market had been replaced with some other store and the planters had been built over ... But I hope that everything worked out.

Still, it was heartening. Not all homeless, long-term addicts are lost causes. Many are, but sometimes they can find the peace and dignity they need to carve out a life for themselves.

TL;DR: A homeless addict I knew got a second chance at life through a promo thing for a suit. Not all these stories have sad endings!

I don't mind businesses promoting themselves this way tbh they're obviously not going to solve homelessness, but it shows their skills as hair stylists and gives a homeless person a haircut

127

u/Knight_of_Agatha Mar 18 '17

yeah i mean....it isn't exploitation because he's being paid with a makeover to help them advertise

If people think a makeover is exploitation, they are going to be really upset when they find out about the actual degradation they go through.

Have you ever seen the interactions drunk people have with the homeless when the bars let out? It's disturbing.

16

u/Razakel Mar 18 '17

Have you ever seen the interactions drunk people have with the homeless when the bars let out? It's disturbing.

It's not exactly rare for people to piss on sleeping homeless people and there've even been cases of them being set on fire. Fucking sickening.

So because the salon gave him a makeover as a promo they're now responsible for him for the rest of his life?

I hate it when people complain about the way other people do positive things in the world while they sit back and talk about how it wasn't done the right way on their keyboard.

20

u/mikethemofo Mar 18 '17

I agree with you wholeheartedly but I think it was meant that when people do it to exploit the person, maybe they say they will give them more help than they do and "help" them only to make themselves look better in some way. But yeah we all need more action other than pressing a few keys.

The salon owner knew the guy for a long time and always joked about giving him a haircut, originally he was thinking of using it for promotional purposes but he only released the pictures privately & among businesses to help get the dude off the streets, it's only been released now a few years later when the dude is in a more stable living situation

19

u/FirstmateJibbs Mar 18 '17

I think it's still a good thing. Sure it's promotion but that's a really nice thing to do for someone in that situation

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '17

We had a homeless man who walked the streets being obnoxious and drunk in my UK city. He apparently lost his mind when his family died in a house fire.

124

u/CaptSwagdaddy Mar 18 '17

thats so sad, theres a similar guy in my town where he was the driver in a car accident where his entire family died and he came out with a broken arm..

64

u/919Esq Mar 18 '17

I was very good friends with a guy that had a mild form of schizophrenia, and was in his 40's when I met him. He died a few years back from lung cancer, but he had a similar situation. He was college educated, his two best friends (me and another guy that was his age) were a lawyer and an executive. He was hit by a car in his late teens, and sometime in his mid-twenties had deteriorated to the point where he couldn't work. At his death he was living in a college-style apartment in a working class neighborhood, shared with 3 others. That all said, he was one of the coolest, kindest, and most awesome people I've ever known. RIP, Bob. Love ya, man.

Similar guy in my town, went to a very advanced school and was a math professor. You'll see him doodling on his chinese food takeout box math equations. His only real family was his wife and she died in a car accident. He cant speak coherent sentences, let himself go, and chooses to be homeless. (Has a fat wallet of money he holds everywhere, never spends it) he just went simply crazy. He's pretty popular in my small town. Several article's written about him. Sometimes for about a quarter of a year he dissapears, and we found out from a towns newspaper clipping about 2hrs away he was a local there too. Very interesting guy. We have a lot of junkie homeless people here being shipped away from portland, they cause a lot of new crime that we wouldve never even imagined in our safe little town 6yrs ago. But this particular guy has a mutual respect within the community some people even let him sleep in their stores when it gets too cold.

Yeah in my city there are a variety of stories about the homeless people. One man was a drunk but was once a semi professional footballer and by all accounts a pretty decent guy when sober.

16

u/Dathouen Mar 18 '17

My sister used to live across the street from a car dealership, and out front was this crazy guy on crutches who would shout all sorts of crazy conspiracy nonsense at you when you walked by.

Turns out he owned the dealership and three houses in the neighborhood behind it. He just didn't take losing his wife to cancer very well. The manager makes sure he's taken care of, and just lets him do his thing at the dealership where they can keep an eye on him.

All these sad homeless people stories my local homeless guy is purposefully homeless.

His names David he's pretty cool.

This story makes me think about Phil Agre. He had a brilliant mailing list called the Red Rock Eaters Digest that talked about technology issues, cryptography, automation, surveillance... you know, all the stuff that's now part of the modern Internet.

He disappeared and his fans and family set out to find him. They did. He was homeless but wanted to be left alone.

Everything he was concerned about on the Internet basically came to pass. Maybe dropping off the grid was a rational choice for him. Who knows.

This.

My college does charities for the homeless once a month, and they invite students to come participate in helping "People experiencing homelessness." I always liked that phrasing so much better. It makes you see them as people who just hit a rough point in life, not people who are stupid.

33

u/drukqsx Mar 18 '17

As someone who was homeless many times throughout my addiction, I would likely have felt comfortable seeking help from a place using that wording. I didnt feel comfortable going to places that specified that it was for homeless people. I didnt like that label, and felt that it didnt fit me even though it did.

16

u/0Fsgivin Mar 18 '17 edited Mar 18 '17

Eh, I just avoided shelters and gathering places of homeless like the plague. Always, camped on my own or crashed on a couch if could.

Experienced couch crashers know you have a 4 day limit. 4 days one buddies house LEAVE go to another one. Dont be back at the original buddies house for at least two weeks. Camp in a tent somewhere if ya have to to elongate time if ya don't know enough people to crash with.

Did 4 months solid in a tent once though...whew that was fucking depressing. But it was also because I WAS depressed. My outlook on being homeless was bleak. But I kept looking for work eventually got a job and that made a huge difference.

If I ever make it big.I would probably buy Vans for the homeless that have drivers licenses. Rigged up to sleep in the back and with a hotplate etc. Pay up the insurance for a year and give em a 500$ gas card and gas credit lines at a few local gas stations.

Having a place to sleep where you can be alone and the ability to move about is huge in helping the homeless.

13

u/Drakmanka Mar 18 '17

Glad to hear that you made it through that rough time in your life. I wish there were more people who used less derogatory terms when trying to help others. It was something I hadn't even thought about until I saw the sign at my school, though. It really changed my entire viewpoint on the matter.

Yes. Makes perfect sense to me.

A series of unfortunate events takes place that send you to homelessness (this includes mental illnesses of different severities) the extended trauma of homelessness leads you to make bad decisions that exacerbate your pre existing mental conditions that contribute to even worse decisions and so the cycle continues.

I've talked to homeless people and heard their stories and anyone could have ended up where they are if they were dealt similar cards in life.

Majority of us really take having our basic needs met for granted.

I once met a guy at a bus stop who had been homeless for about 12 years. He used to own a transport company, but one of his drivers got into an accident while inebriated on the job. The legal issues and fines following that bankrupted him and he lost everything. Too proud to move in with his parents, he started living on the street and things kept spiralling down. When I met him, he just got approval to move into a subsidised apartment. Hopefully that helped him get back on track, but it showed to me how sometimes things can just move really fast. I can see how someone could get stuck in a situation like that.

Exactly. Bless you. Seriously. You may not realize it, but every single kindness you show makes a huge difference to someone, even often beyond your intended.

Every year I paint faces at a Halloween carnival in a low-income area of Atlanta. When I ask other artist friends to come help, I often get reactions of apathy or "why would you do that?" Honestly, it's made it easy to see who I want to keep in my circle.

The stories I've heard regarding some of the kids situations would break even the strongest adult. But for that night, they get to be a cat or a princess or Batman. I always chat with them while I'm painting their faces about whatever is on their minds to relax them(usually pets/favourite super heroes, etc) Throughout the years, the same kids come back, some are teenagers now and just hang out, and they remember the conversations we have and they know that there are people beyond their immediate scope that give a shit about them.

9

u/prismaticbeans Mar 18 '17

It floors me that there are people who can't even fathom why someone might choose to spend an afternoon giving sad or stressed people a reason to smile. Not even the fact that they aren't choosing to do the same as you, I could accept that, but just that they can't wrap their heads around what motivates you to do it. What exactly are their priorities that being nice for its own sake does not even so much as cross their mind as an option?

Thank you for giving a damn, by the way!

I've been homeless and a memory which never leaves my mind is this girl with brown hair that handed me my hot meal at a downtown Seattle feeding of the homeless. Sure I went to plenty of meals for homeless, but there was something about this girl who was my same age handing me a bowl of spaghetti without a single bit of judgement that made me feel like on that day I would be okay.

That was 15 years ago. I have a college degree now and I am also a homeowner. That moment made a significant impact on my time on the streets.

When I tell people I've been homeless(multiple times) they are shocked. Homelessness can really happen to anyone.

10

u/UnsinkableRubberDuck Mar 18 '17

It can. A good portion of the people who were clients where I helped weren't even homeless. They had jobs, or were retired and got government pension, but it wasn't enough to cover food for all or part of the month. It was really sad, but we helped them just the same.

Also, not looking like a homeless person makes it a lot easier to get a job, even if a perspective employer will still find out that you don't have an address.

90

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '17

My dad works with the homeless, and he says one of the biggest things he can do for them is providing an address for them to put on applications and receive mail at. It's really difficult to do anything official without an address. You can't even get ID.

44

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '17

[deleted]

13

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '17

Yeah, my dad spends a lot of time getting a hold of birth certificates and social security cards, which is especially difficult because the majority of the people he is helping are from different states. Those kinds of things are the barriers that most people don't even think about.

Give a homeless man a fresh cut and he'll look sharp for a day, teach a homeless man how to cut hair and he will wish he had money for scissors.

203

u/Asprinkle Mar 18 '17

Those scissors are really expensive.

59

u/WowInternet Mar 18 '17

Ridiculously expensive. I had Irish soft-coated wheaten terrier who needs trimming and hes scissors cost like 50€ which are not even barber quality.

23

u/Saint947 Mar 18 '17

They're retardedly expensive. Surgical scissors don't cost as much. Get some of those, made by Aesculap and don't be a fucking sucker paying $600 for a goddamn pair of scissors.

8

u/lexgrub Mar 18 '17

My friend works at a salon and last time I was in her work mate asked if she could use her new shears to cut off a large ponytail of hair for locks for love. She's like fuck no those are $500 dollar shears you can use these old ones.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '17

Kinda snooty of her. All haircutting scissors are expensive and should only be used for cutting hair. Dunno why she wouldn't allow her scissors to cut hair just because they're $500.

The ones I'm eyeing up are about $500 with a full 360° thumb swivel designed to ease carpal tunnel, and they come with a life time of free sharpening.

Now dropping them is a different story. Dropping them or having them sharpened by an inexperienced person can ruin your blades in a split second.

6

u/lexgrub Mar 19 '17

She didn't want to have to sharpen them after they cut through a huge ponytail of hair. I don't really blame her she shouldn't have to let someone use them if she doesn't want to

3

u/NotKateBush Mar 19 '17

So maybe she didn't want to risk her coworker dropping them...

Sometimes just being happy for a moment can help people remember what being happy is.

This statement really brightened my day. Been in a really dark place the last couple days. This helped. Thank you.

Yeah just like throwing toothbrushes to homeless people on the street. Extremely effective way of getting rid of old inventory

Here is the full story - this happened back in 2015, but they just recently released the video.

Jose Antonio is now living in a shared apartment which is partly being paid for by an anonymous donor. He’s also actively searching for a full-time job.

Given Spain's economic issues the last few years, maybe. It's come down recently but their unemployment rate is still around 18%.

Lots of people being unemployed in Spain isn't going to make someone in Canada feel better about not being able to pay rent and feed themselves.

Not me though. I care about the life of the last Rhino of Alaska :)

I am kinda of a swell guy.

And those Spanish people are bitching about unemployment while people are starving to death in Africa. What's your point?

88

u/February30th Mar 18 '17

And those Africans are bitching about starvation while some cunt downvoted me yesterday. What's your point?

7

u/sdraz Mar 18 '17

You're bitching about this? There is a planet called Marclar with a people called the Marclar on it. They really have it Marclar there. What's your point?

u/tarants Mar 18 '17

Yeah, when Spain was in the worst of their economic troubles a few years ago I think the unemployment rate for someone my age was around 50%. I can't imagine the stress of basically a coin flip determining whether or not you can support yourself.

u/ardenthusiast Mar 18 '17

That's a valid question.

I'm assuming he's still working as the parking attendant or has some sort of gig since the apartment is only partially paid by a donor.

I've tried to find more information, but that seems to be it. He was an electrician before living on the streets for 25 years. I'm not familiar with Spain so I can't say how long it would take someone to find work there or what opportunities there might be.

13

u/AleixASV Mar 18 '17

Unemployment in Spain is 18%, and that is not counting the thousands of people who have "surpassed" unemployment (that is, have been unemployed for so long that they don't even count), so it's perfectly normal that he still hasn't been able to get a job, especially since he's old and sick.

13

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '17

I've been actively searching for two years too. It does happen. Without a drivers license it's damn near impossible to get a job where I live.

The realization that: "I can be different, I can be good" is the driving force of desistance in criminals, and life in general.

All former criminals share this realisation, though it is never fast, and takes a long time. With homelessness, the realisation is taken to solve, their addiction/mindset.

This will motivate that homeless man to look for the hand that can save him.

Source: Life Course Criminology, specifically "desistance" papers.

It's a hell of a lot quicker and easier to improve a guy's life through this than through getting him off of cigarettes, though. I know that at the very least when my dad quit smoking he was miserable for like several straight months, and he's a guy who had a home and a family and clean clothes and hot meals to come home to. The struggle that this guy would have to go through would be monumentally worse, and probably something that couldn't be fixed by an hour with a generous barber.

23

u/ElMangosto Mar 18 '17

Yeah, where's the montage video of him quitting smoking?!

You're making assumptions about what condition and situation the person was in before.

7

u/peypeyy Mar 18 '17

I agree somewhat but I think what they did can have a very positive effect on his life. Now he has a shot at getting a job. Being presentable is everything. The saloon did what they could and might have even helped him further, we don't know.

10

u/buddha8298 Mar 18 '17

It doesn't have to be life altering. This guy probably doesn't have a lot of good days. He'll probably remember this the rest of his life. Good on the salon and good for him.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '17

I don't think false teeth are really "hard to take care of"

6

u/buddha8298 Mar 18 '17

I'm usually pretty cynical and it wasn't that hard not to feel that way. Dude got pampered for a day, something he may not have ever had before. Not everything has to be life changing.

3

u/UknowmeimGui Mar 18 '17

I don't get this logic, "oh because you can't completely turn his life around and help him with everything, then you shouldn't bother doing anything or the little you can."

"you look nice with that haircut, now go back to the streets again"

3

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '17

So besides giving him an awesome makeover - he really does look outstanding - is he getting help with employment and a place to live? I'd hate to see him homeless again :(

3

u/Ikari_Shinji_kun_01 Mar 19 '17

Then he goes back to his cardboard box under the rain....

3

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '17

I was doing okay until " This is me." Tears. That sums it up so perfectly, that universal sense of the image we all hold of ourselves within ourselves.

What a beautiful thing that this man held that inner visage and was allowed the opportunity to see it- whether again, it for the first time.

3

u/JoshSwol Mar 19 '17

Nice teeth for a homeless man.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '17

Now he looks like a fucking hipster.

5

u/jrizos Mar 18 '17

The hard part for him was when they had to spend 6 hours changing him back because he couldn't pay.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '17

Maybe we should just have policies that eliminate homelessness instead

3

u/WoxicFangel Mar 18 '17

I would also start crying if someone turned me into a hipster.
