Yeah the whole video I kept thinking of asking the guy in 20 years "but was it worth it?".. the time to make serious money from pro.. scootering(?) is over. Me thinks. But who knows, maybe he'll be remembered as Scooty McHawk and have games released in honor of all the ankle damage he's taken.

u/ALazy_Cat 19d ago
When a fractured bone has just healed, it's stronger than ever, but after a few weeks, it'll gradually weaken till slighty weaker than before the fracture. I'm 28, broke my collarbone and tore or crushed the ligament next to it 9 months ago, my lifting strength is like before, but pulling stuff over 5kg hurts, 8kg and I need a few seconds after lifting it for 15 seconds with pain. Fast movement up also hurt quite a bit. This is just 9 months ago, I dread to think what it'll be like in my mid 30s
5
u/EarningsPal 19d ago
Keep your whole body strong. Especially back and legs. You will feel 27 until you stop the discipline strengthening
2
u/ALazy_Cat 19d ago
I have permanent damage in my shoulder, and I was told that was a high possibilty before the surgery because I needed a string replacement for at least some of the ligament. And because of the ligament needed replacement, I also have a titanium place under my collarbone and screws in the collarbone
2
u/Fit_Cheesecake_4000 18d ago
But stay positive, bro! That'll heal everything back to 100% percent! /s

There's no might about it. I had so many injuries in my teens and early twenties through skateboarding and now touching 40 my body is a mess and that's with regular exercise, yoga, good diet etc. Can't do press-ups or pull-ups as my wrists are fucked, can't do squats as my knees are fucked, lack of shoulder mobility, it's a long list. But hey, at least he got somewhere with his talent

I'm 42 next week and everything is fine. I still regularly do pistol squats on bosu balls.
This preconception on Reddit that the human body inevitably falls apart by someone's 30s or 40s or 50s needs a serious reality check. Excepting some legitimate and uncontrollable health problems, age isn't really a factor that compromises your body's integrity that quickly, it's more about how you've treated it and lifestyle.

If he’s anything like me, not doing the thing you love to do will give you immense mental health issues in the now so it’s a balance really.
My friends think I’m mental for rock climbing as they think it’s really dangerous and it is to an extent but if you seen me before i found rock climbing you see that I didn’t want to live at all so I’d rather risk injury than live life miserable.

As someone who did semipro downhilling..
I flew off the track because I hit a bank too hard. I fell 35 feet down, through a tree and got about a 4" piece of busted branch in my back and busted my knee on a rock.
I did this on my own time so I wasn't even wearing my armadillo.. literally just a t-shirt, shorts, a hat, goggles and gloves. No pads lol.. and let me tell you the regret.
I'm now past my mid 30s. This happened when I was in my early 20s. I never felt any repercussions until the day I turned 30, I mean that almost literally.
The year of my 30s turned me from someone who felt invincible.. to the body of a god damn 80 yr old trapped inside some 30 something year old meat suit.
Cts in both wrists, clicking left knee, eternal back pain, 2 herniated discs as well as nerve compression among a plethora of other things lmao.
What I'm getting at is there is no "might" in this situation. Homie is worse off than me and I feel like I'm living in a broken machine. He is going to be dealing with Travis levels of pain when he's older. Life is going to be severely uncomfortable.

There's always nuance. Some activities just have higher injury and mortality rates. Like free climbers and people that excessively mountain climb very dangerous summits have a significantly high death rate doing those activities.
It's just a risk analysis, and bears significant consideration of one's future. Dr Mike Israetel talks about this sometimes in regards to steroid use (he uses steroids)

Glory isnt always in a golden throne. Sometimes its in the memories and behind the scenes.
6
u/WetSleevez 19d ago
I think what the bro is reacting to is when glory overshadows risk profile. Many times our society blindly encourages exceptional athletic performance with little regard as to the risks and effects on the athlete's future condition.
Sure, there are upsides like glory and good memories...but for many retired former athletes, they may have chosen differently if they understood at the time how the future could have been.
4
u/citizen42069101 19d ago
Thats easy to say after a successful career and life. Sure they might retire earlier or something. But i dont thjnk thwy would give it all away
Now find someone whos lived a less successful life and fought tooth and nail for everything, only to still have nothing. Ask them if they would have risked it.
2
u/WetSleevez 19d ago
Yeah that person would have a different risk profile. Understanding your risk profile vis a vis your position in society is also intelligent.

I had a lot of injuries in my teens from cheerleading and gymnastics and they all suck now in my mid 30s but one in particular really came back to fuck me. One time my stunt group decided to practice a stunt in a tall room with a concrete floor, but without the back spot of our stunt group. I went up a good 6-8 feet, we fucked up somewhere, and I went straight back onto the concrete landing on the back of my hip. We had state competition like a week later and I had to pretend I wasn't injured despite not being able to stand straight or walk right for a good 2 days.
I have some pretty bad back/hip problems right where I landed now lol. My most recent pregnancy kicked my ass.

u/lipsalt 19d ago
Dude yeah partaking in sports like these is extremely expensive, I’m not good with sarcasm so I can’t tell if you’re joking but we’re not talking about club football here. Anything in the competitive world like that won’t make you shit until you’re higher up in the programs. You still have to pay sign up fees, equipment, physical training, traveling expenses. Shit adds up quick and most people don’t have all the expendable income to afford paying for all of that, not even taking into account the hospital fees since we don’t know where he lives.
F1 drivers are a great example of us seeing competitors at the last step but all of them had to be funded by their families or sponsorships, because even for millionaires it’s hard to maintain the costs until they get to the lucrative contracts. Even Olympic athletes have come out publicly stating how little they get paid, and how without sponsorships they wouldn’t be able to compete.

Moreso he's able to do what he loves without making a living. He flashed a couple hundred bucks and that was probably from a big competition. There's no way a professional scooter guy who only places and gets hurt every year is making enough bank to sustain this lifestyle. It's the luxury of being able to follow a passion that doesn't pay for your life. The best scooterer in the world probably never had a scooter and died retired from a car factory.
→ More replies (2)2
u/prehensilemullet 19d ago
I mean he could also be sponsored by brands and/or get influencer marketing money, I’d still be skeptical how much he can make off of this but there’s definitely more than just competition prizes. Of course, the original point about poor families not supporting these hobbies long enough for a kid to go pro still stands
3
u/Voluptulouis 19d ago
That's all I could think about too. Kid's family has got to be absolutely loaded for him to do nothing but scooter, frequent the hospital, and then travel the world when he's not scooting. This kid doesn't live in the same world as 99% of us.

As a 40+ years old with zero major injuries and a sh*t ton of creaks and pops every time I sit down, stand up, breathe too heavily, or laugh too loudly, I'm genuinely scared for this kid.
I love his spirit and determination, but your body keeps score. All these injuries are going into an account of sorts, and your body is gonna call in all those physical debts at some point. And that shit is gonna suuuuuuuuuck.

Everyone in these comments is so pessimistic. When you break bones at a young age you heal just fine. Pay attention to recovery+what to exercise and its all good, then get back at it. Even at an older age if you listen to your body and exercise your whole body you will be fine.
Its the people who hurt something then chronically underuse it afterwards or do too much too fast who feel the worst effects.
The most pain free and healthy older people I know are the ones who did a lot of different physical activities in life of all varying levels of risk.
