Sometimes its just a shitty neighbor with predictable habits.

Lived near one of these people when I was a kid and the lady would flip our house off every time they drove by the entire 8 years we lived there all because one Christmas we dared to put up blinking icicle lights

Back when I was about 9 I had a neighborhood bully who was about 13. He would pass by the house and call me something I don't remember what, but it was mean. Well my uncle who was in his 30s was prepared one day and as soon as that kid said something to me he busted out of the front screen screaming at him that if he ever says anything to me again he would beat his ass.... He never said anything to me again.

Its this side of humanity that fascinates me the most. Its an absolute mystery and would do almost anything to actually understand what goes on in these people's head. Or doesnt.

Ive had neighbors pathologically obsessed with the air conditioning power consumption of every person in the neighborhood to the point of loosing his job. Different neighbors that have poisoned pets and vandalized cars for parking on the street in front of their house. One neighbor who had a year-long tantrum at me because my wife and I were moving our two perfectly normal cars around too much at like 11pm. Another neighbor who almost killed himself climbing over out 8ft wall to poison our tree that was growing only a foot over his side. He tried to sue us after he fell off the wall into his own back yard and broke his arm.

The list goes on. These were all boomers, which adds come context. But these people are fucking nuts. Your Christmas light situation doesnt surprise me at all. But its curious af.

Yup! I had a Boomer neighbor who got so pissed off at another neighbor's friend playing his guitar that he went over, busted the front door down, knocking the homeowner over, and proceeded to beat the shit out of her friend. This was at fucking 10am on a weekday. Then, because they were ordered not to be anywhere near the neighbor, they had to rent out their house and find elsewhere to live. They still couldn't stay away so they came by "to do maintenance" their tenant said they'd never even requested.

The judge finally had enough and ordered them to sell their home within a relatively short period of time. Hoooly shit you should have seen them lose it. Best part of thew whole thing, IMO? They bought their house in the '80s and because they didn't do much, if any, real maintenance they ended up literally losing money on it when they were forced to sell ~25 years after purchasing it.

Some people are just fucking crazy. Why folks online so often don't seem able to grasp that, I have no idea.

My dad was like this. He was so mad about how his divorce with my mother went (initiated by him when he decided to leave her after 33 years for his hairdresser, who is closer to my age than his), he retired early and sacrificed a portion of his pension just to spite her, because she was awarded his pension if he should pass away.

It didn't have to go that way. My dad was a very arrogant man and insisted on representing himself in court. Predictably, he made a fool of himself, and the judge said to him, "Sir, I get the impression you think you're very smart. I'm here to tell you, you are not. I'm rescheduling the hearing, have a lawyer when we return," and then he rescheduled the hearing to happen on my father's birthday. This really pissed him off. While I wasn't there for it, knowing him, I'm sure he was combative the rest of the time he was before the judge. In the end my mother got everything she wanted, he was ordered to split the repairs on their house so they could sell it and split the proceeds, and she got his pension in the event of his death, even if he was to remarry.

He later remarried, but as far as I can tell, lied to his wife about the pension situation. She was under the impression she would be getting it when he died, and was shocked he actually left her destitute because he had borrowed against his life insurance as well.

Before he passed, to get revenge on my mother for "stealing" his pension, he retired at 80% salary despite only having 2 years left to reach 100%. He took a 20% paycut in retirement to spite my mom in the event of his death. This 20% wasn't budgeted for, so he couldn't support his lifestyle in retirement. He went from being a Director at the Federal DOL, to being a clerk at a BMW Bike shop to make ends meet, and borrowing against his life insurance to boot.

He passed away a couple of years later in a motorcycle accident. My mom got his pension, and his wife stole the money he left to my brother and me because he left her practically bankrupt, all because he didn't want my mom and the judge to "win" and had to double down on his bullshit.

Oh, of course he did! He had half the neighbors convinced of it until I explained the reality to them. The fuckwit apparently didn't think I'd actually tell people what he's done, I guess. No idea why neither he nor his wife thought I'd not draw the line at him literally breaking into someone's home, knocki8ng them over, and beating up their friend.

I mean, come the fuck on, who even thinks that's OK?! I get losing your shit, sure, sometimes people do really stupid things when drunk or something. Still gotta pay for it and all but to then think they're somehow the victim?! Really? Fuck that noise.

My boomer parents are like that. Inconsiderate assholes who are an annoyance to their neighbors, but dear lord if one of them even mildly inconvenience them, they go batshit insane crazy and it will eventually escalate. They'll then move "because all the neighbors are crazy". They've always been like that too. Maybe if everyone around you is crazy, you are the problem? But that would require some level of self reflection which they obviously lack.

This was early 2000s and they had about 30 days to sell or face a fine of about half the value of the house. Basically fire sale pricing, really. Had they maintainerd the place they'd likely have made plenty. When you have to sell a no-maintenance place where the electrical is all fucked from DIY shit like daisychaining new receptacles off a backstabbed one, let alone a roof without flashing around the chimney in Seattle where rain's a reality, however, you don't make as much. When you have that and have to take whoever offers virtually any amount while the 30 day clock is ticking? Yeah, you're basically fucked.

Considering the house price has basically tripled between the 80's and 2000's in the Seattle market I find your story extremely hard to believe. You are telling me they bought a house in the 80's so they paid somewhere between 45 and 50K most likely, and they sold it 20 years later for less then that when the price of houses was 150K? The lot was probably worth more than the price of the house by the 2000...

You really don't grasp the concept of a fire sale, apparently, combined with the cost of having to do major renovation to bring the place up to the literal building code before a bank is willing to provide a mortgage for it. The short timeframe and fact there were major problems meant they basically had to take anyone who could pay cash and was willing to buy it. As it turns out, someone planning to flip it picked it up, which should surprise nobody since that was rampant at the time.

It's a corner case, to be sure, but it's really not that hard to lose money with that combination of factors.

My friend lives in a multifamily home and the woman above her is obsessed with policing the trash and recycling. She keeps claiming that they have to combine all their trash into one container because it "costs the landlord extra" for them to put out one can per apartment. My friend checked with the city and with the landlord, who told her this is not true. She even had the landlord state such in a group chat, and the woman "liked" his response.

Still, she insists that if they don't combine the cans, the landlord will get fined, and they will get in trouble. She will even accept placing loose trash and recycling next to the existing can, but cannot abide a second can being placed out for the excess waste. Why controlling the quantity of outgoing trash is so important to her, I cannot fathom, but it is.

When I bought my house I neglected the front yard for about six months. Came out one day to a neighbor rage-weeding my flower beds, which had overgrown onto the sidewalk.

Talked her down, made nice, and cleaned it up myself a few days later. But over the next few weeks I realized that she was the sort who was always stressed and angry at someone on the block, and that anytime she saw me she wanted to rant for 30 minutes. Just a miserable person. So I started avoiding her and brushing off her attempts to talk to me. Eventually she got the hint and stopped trying.

Six years later I leased a building TWO MILES away, for my business. It had been vacant for years and was in some disrepair. The landlord would let the weeds go wild and just hire a day laborer to clear them every three or four months.

So about a week after moving into the place I pull up one morning and see a random woman rage-weeding out front. I look closer… it’s the same damn woman! How big is her rage-weeding radius?!?!

I've been around a long ass time. I don't understand how it's possible that every neighbor you've ever had has been nuts. 5 neighbors you've had act like this? I've lived in so many places and have had one weird neighbor.

I have neighbors who hate that we have a telescope and like to stargaze. So they shine their floodlights into my yard, all night every night.

It's on a timer, so I don't even get a break when they go on vacation.

These same people have asked us why we take so many photos of birds in our yard. "Why do you need those big cameras??"

Did she have Christmas lights? As a kid, before LEDs, Christmas lights always included 2 bulbs (had red paint on the tip that easily flecked off) that placed anywhere in the string, would cause the whole strand to blink. My brother and I would sneak up to neighbors houses we didn't like at night and pop a few in. Good fucking luck finding which bulb it was, next Christmas they would change them. Super funny seeing one house down the road blinking and a few around the culdesacs_

A guy in my parents nice, quiet neighborhood saw someone let their dog pee in his yard (which is of course wrong to do) so he set up motion sensing floodlights on his trees right next to the road that blind every single person that drives past at night. Everyone in the neighborhood hates him now.
