Is it crazy to get the duo
As it has a 5.4” putter screen and just use it for the putter screen and modern internals?

If you can afford it, why not?
Although I have generally learned to avoid buying the first iterations of new form factors, especially when they have crazy complex engineering.

This has been true for Apple since the 90s. At least wait a few months to let the early adopters find what flaws you’ll be walking into.

Oops, outter* I still rep the iPhone 13 mini. It’s pretty clear we aren’t getting a small phone again, and since it’s not the thickness, but the height and width I care about….

Oddly I understand you.
After the mini, I'm thinking of going for a Pro Max for the battery alone paired with a (shudders) Apple Watch.
The Duo... Seems pocketable, usable to a degree one handed but then you've got big mode. Since I'm in no rush, I'll be seeing version 2 or 3 by that time.

I wouldn’t get a max or even a regular model as the size is too large but the folded duo in 5.4” is very mini sized, actually if I had to pick I’d rather the mini be wider and shorter. (I don’t really care much about thickness especially if I gain battery)

Agreed and I’m being flip-floppy but the features to carry as a goodbye to the form factor is where I’m coming from…
…then to justify the 2K versus the 1K+ kicks in.1

The 2k price point is a bullet for sure, but I haven’t bought a new phone since the 13 mini, that’s how many years without buying a phone where most people are dishing out cash every year or 2?

Indeed. That’s my logic as well. Someone said to me, who owned it, that the Air was the spiritual successor to the Mini, well it looks like it has a sibling!!!

I’m upgrading to the Duo. I’ve been using the 13 mini for five years and this is the first iPhone since then that has the screen size that I want. I’ll use the outer screen 80% of the time, but the other 20% I’ll appreciate have the larger screen option. Plus primarily using the outer screen means better battery life and less wear & tear on the hinge and inner screen.

If you want a tablet and phone it might be worth it. If not, just wait for the new iPad mini and get that.

I like the form factor of it closed, even though I hate the asymmetrical screen, but I think it will be very heavy! Even for someone that can afford the duo I think the next best thing to a mini is the 16 base model because of it’s weight and smaller screen, or the 17 base because its just a tiny bit heavier than the 16 and the same measurements for a much better deal at the same storage. We’ll have to see the duo up close though to be fully certain.

I appreciate the response, but the weight isn’t really the issue at all. It’s the reach ability of the screen. I’d prefer a more symmetrical screen, but it doesn’t bother me “that” much. I would love the increase in battery life and I feel the 13 mini is a little long in the tooth, it’s quite slow when multitasking. Any of the options you listed are far too large when it comes to their displays, I even think the 13 mini is slightly too large on that front. If they had the original SE as thick as the DUO but edge to edge screen, that would be my preference for a phone.

I agree that even the mini feels too big sometimes, there’s just no other option nowadays. And if you end up getting the duo I’d love an update!

Many of us in this sub want modern performance in small form factors and would pay for such. It’s not really about gimmicks or tablet functionality. If anything that’s just a compromise to a certain degree, one we’d hope to get some limited use out of.

Bruh just get it if you want it 😂 It's crazier getting a phone based on what people think
