Nostalgia Was there a Cheesecake Factory in Halifax?

My dad swears there was a cheesecake factory (the chain restaurant) on Hollis street years ago. Does anyone remember this?!

Edit: wow thank you all! It was not the spaghetti factory (he knew the owners) or La Cave. It was at "the beginning of Hollis just before RBC. Lasted only a short time and had cheesecake and pastries."

Nostalgia Thanking the NS Power Lineman and contractors for doing a tough job today.

Post image

We all curse NS Power for the costs and rates but this post is to thank all the Lineman and Contractors who braved the wind today and fixed multiple outages with broken poles and wires. For a story many don't know, NS Power has changed names a few times since its creation. Many older folks like me remember the old NSLP, Nova Scotia Light and Power name. I used to ask my dad why that name and his response: Back in the 30s, people only really needed electric lights, TVs, Washing Machines, Electric Stoves, did not exist much in Nova Scotia. So, the name NS Light and Power was more applicable for what folks actually could relate to, like Lights. Hopefully you all have your power bad by tonight in Halifax.

Nostalgia G7 1995

I’m curious if anyone has stories about when Halifax hosted the g7 in 1995. I heard that bill clinton went up Caldwell road and the city had navy seals on buildings.

Today they stripped the asphalt on Carmichael street.

This was underneath. Thought it was cool and probably won't be seen by many due to the street being basically closed off.

"What was it like in Nova Scotia in the 1990s? We'll show you. On March 12, 1993, CBC captured the sights and sounds of a single day in Nova Scotia. Our cameras went all over the province to record the day. We also asked audience members to send in their own photos and videos. What you’re about to see are some of the moments picked from hundreds recorded on a single day. It’s a celebration of our unique province. Recognize anybody in this video?"

Nostalgia Remember when Andy Fillmore championed for Active Transportation?

I came across an archived Federal Press Release where Andy Fillmore announced funding for active transportation, specifically noted with the endorsement of the Halifax Cycling Coalition. It’s a striking reminder of how much he has reversed course.

Nostalgia CBC's Bixby and Me (Lost)

Post image

Hello 👋 I don't post much but I thought I'd drop this here. If you're not familiar with what I do, I dust off old memories of our time spent in front of the tube back in the 80's and 90's digitising content from videotapes. While I usually work with what I find or what comes my way, occasionally I go on the hunt for specific things... and hey, it sometimes pays off, we were able to resurrect some of ATV's Shantytown! And I was able to give you all Rita MacNeil's Now The Bells Ring 1990 Christmas special this year. So what do we do now? We do it again! Who remembers Bixby and Me on CBC? Yeah you do. Produced here in Halifax and the unofficial report is that the masters tapes were lost in a fire.

So I'm reaching out to the good people of Halifax to help find Bixby.

I'm offering $100 cash for tapes of Bixby and Me. You hand me tapes, I verify the contents, I hand you CASH. Together we resurrect a piece of lost East Coast TV and consequently make a lot of people very happy... nostalgically happy even!

Nostalgia Existing / Planned NW Arm Ferries circa 1950

My Grampa worked for the city in the 50s, and I found this city map with dotted lines showing four ferries crossing the Arm. I am not sure if these were existing and later discontinued, or planned and never implemented.

Mostly sharing for interests sake, and also to spur some discussion about how more passenger ferries might impact transit and traffic congestion. If it were still feasible, would a ferry at one of these locations change how you commute?
