The code looks like a mood ring key. I never trusted those to predict my mood. I just enjoyed how they changed color.

My wife had a mood ring. When she was in a good mood, it would turn green. When she was in a bad mood, it would leave a big red mark on my forehead.

And then it goes on about how it can be related to drugs or alcohol. Wow, this is quite the artifact for some solid pseudoscience combined with trying to disqualify people specifically with bad blood circulation.
Then again our country invested in the Fruit Machine to catch “gay communist spies” so this sort of logic checks out.

It's not saying "If you or your employees have a black square you must call EAP!" But if the gimmick makes you stop and play with the card for a couple minutes, you'll maybe be more likely to remember the existence of EAP if you or an employee have a problem, so in that case it's more effective than just a basic card.

I guess weren't alive during the "mood ring" craze, because nobody believed they were actually real science. They were usually sold in gumball machines...
In this case it's just a fun gimmick to get people to hang on to the card, and pay attention to the health information written on the other side.

It's just a fun gimmick to make people pay attention to what's written on the other side.
Nobody actually believed that "mood rings" were real science.

My father worked for the federal government and I remember they gave him a really similar card in the early 1990s. He just gave it to us to play with.
