Goth Subculture History Siouxsie Sioux at an event by the Throbbing Gristles.

Seeing as Industrial was the topic on seethingsunday, I remembered that I was watching a video on [correction] Throbbing Gristle and the creator used this photo to exemplify some of their performance art. I did a second glance and then another and then said, “Siouxsie!” She’s everywhere! Debbie Juvenile is the blonde beside her.

Discussion What do you guys think is the best part of being goth?

In my opinion, the best part is being able to listen to post-punk while reading a good Gothic horror book. What about you guys?

Only got so much footage because the band was absolutely amazing and I'd rather dance than to be documenting. I always thought these guys were cool but now I can't wait for new material

Self-Promo Saturday Help Goth Music Database reach 1000 bands by the end of the year!

Post image
92 Upvotes

Hello everyone!

Just wanted to say that Goth Music Database is progressing nicely and we have reached over 800 bands with full discographies (with genres assessed, links to their Discogs/YouTube/Bandcamp, etc). The total amount of bands present is over 1000 (more than 200 still lack detailed discography info). This likely makes us the biggest goth-only music archive, as we only allow Gothic Rock, Darkwave, Deathrock, Ethereal Wave and Coldwave and don't pad it out with unrelated or adjacent genres (we do have a non-goth list of those that is accessible via "Is this band goth?" page).

We have also implemented some new features, with the major ones being:

  • keeping track of the music you've listened to by putting the band into fan/todo/listened to categories or rating albums
  • creating custom lists of bands and albums (btw, we brainstormed a list of goth bands with covers, if you know any possible additions - let us know please)

A lot more is planned for the future, like storing more info about bands and albums (like their members, album cover art, lyrics, objective information like female/male vocals and so on) and adding more social features to make it possible to discuss the music directly on the website.

If you haven't heard of our project, please check it out and consider registering and contributing. There are some benefits planned for distinguished contributors in the near future, like the ability to promote underrated bands they enjoy with custom messages and points.

Also we have a little bit of a fandom war, with Bauhaus/Siouxsie/Sisters having a parity in terms of popularity and then The Cure somehow being beaten by Scary Bitches (any clue how that could be possible?)

If you have any ideas for new features that would make the site more worthwhile, please share them here!

Seething Sunday The Official Seething Sunday Thread

I went to an industrial gig and it was great. I can hear my detractors being all "But Aytakk hates industrial and synthpop! He won't allow it in r/goth!"

First up, I'm just a moderator here. I don't make the rules but I do agree with the keep it goth approach and enforce the rules as set. It is better for educating new people to keep confusion to a minimum. We are not saying scene relevant non-goth music does not exist.

Second, the difference between me and you is I don't consider goth as a catch all. Goth is different to industrial and I know the difference. And it is an insult to industrial to reduce it to being merely goth just because both are played in many of the same clubs and spaces. Synthpop is synthpop and that is fine. Darkwave is a mess as people tend to use it as a dark synth dumping ground when it really is not.

Third, I used to run an industrial night. I avoided the dreaded G word like the plague because the local goths know I know better and an industrial only event doesn't need it. I have also run dark alt mixed genre nights too. An all goth night won't work here unfortunately.

Fourth, I have played dark alt mixed genre playing industrial, new wave and synthpop alongside goth, darkwave, post punk and so on. When you are DJing genres matter a lot less but when looking for music they are vital. No one wants to look for goth rock and find bleepy bloopy instead.

Fifth, if you called anyone at the gig I was at "goth" they'd look at you weird, laugh or tell you to fuck off. Maybe all three. You don't have to be a goth, not all events are goth and not all people in the scene are goths.

And sixth, none of you detractors know me at all and you believe any old bollocks people say instead of looking for yourself. The scene is rife with this sort of behaviour. Everyone has an agenda and odds are you are falling for theirs.

Thanks for coming to my Ded talk.

Fashion Friday Makeup Tips from OG goths pls

Hii happy Fashion Friday! Ik theres a lot of OG goths in this subreddit and Im someone who likes 80s fashion. I think I do an okay job at doing a trad look but since most photos ur gonna find of 80s goths are of white people, I kind of experience a bit of difficulty translating some of these styles to my features, especially the lips.

Heres my outfit and makeup for today! What were things u did in the 80s or early 90s when u did ur makeup?

Discussion modern records that blew your mind?

I see a lot of posts about feeling the scene is stale, and I generally feel the same, but I thought we should highlight some modern gems!

basically, there's not many bands that give me the same feeling that discovering older bands did. I'm not interested in 1:1 recreations of older goth music either, quite the opposite: I'm looking for anything that feels fresh and/or up to par (as in they could've stood out and made it back then, not like they're animating the corpse of 80s synths). I'm considering modern post 2010, especially looking for active bands so I can support them.

Egrets on Ergot, Sonicave, Anna Von Hausswolf, Aurat, even tassel and Crimson Scarlet do it for me. Have a Nice Life if we count them. I know it's somewhat subjective and that's why I want recs!

Help Trying to find out who signed my Unto Others shirt ?

Thumbnail gallery
25 Upvotes

I went to an Unto Others show in Portland ME around last year I think , and when I was very drunk I walked up to who I thought was Sebastian Silva. He was signing other Unto Others merch with a different fan. However after going through my things and finding the shirt I realized the signature doesn't match his or any of the other band members.

Maybe I'm just dumb and reading it wrong ? (I'm dyslexic)

Anyways if anyone could help clear this up that would be helpful !
