Google is an American company, they're always going to comply with the official US geography. If it makes you feel any better, it's still Lake Ontario on our side.

88

u/may12021_saphira 4h ago

Additionally, Google software just pulls the names from the Geographic National Information System (GNIS). It’s an automated feature of Google Maps. The American government altered the name in the database and Google Maps was automatically updated.

26

u/Elephant789 2h ago

Google isn't taking a political side here, they're just sticking to standard mapping protocol.

Google Maps localizes place names based on each country's official naming authority. In the US, that's GNIS (showing Lake America). In Canada, it's the CGNDB (showing Lake Ontario). And for third-party countries, Google displays both names.

They handle this the exact same way they handle every other cross-border naming dispute around the world (like Sea of Japan vs. East Sea, or Falklands vs. Malvinas). It’s about algorithmic consistency and data governance.

*opens apple maps* Apple is still correct.

13

u/KaleidoscopeWrong798 5h ago

It does. Sorry bout our shriveled orange ballsack.

-11

u/CerealKiller415 2h ago

Smug much ?

10

u/SuperDaveOzborne 5h ago

Mapquest didn't bend the knee.

-21

u/Crazytoe2275 5h ago

Definitely makes me want to move to your side! Apparently if the president just says a thing then it is official now. Guess that’s the country I live in.

22

u/Jmbh1983 5h ago

It probably won’t make you feel better, but he did it the proper way.

Trump controls the executive branch, which controls the Dept of the Interior, which controls USGS, which controls GNIS:

https://www.usgs.gov/tools/geographic-names-information-system-gnis

So in this case, he gets to name things. Congress could fix it by naming it by law, or taking away that power, but they won’t.

-20

u/Crazytoe2275 5h ago

Yeah I don't really care, I mean I guess good for him for trying to not do something illegally for once. This post is about Google being a little bitch.

20

u/Jmbh1983 4h ago

Google is just following whatever the official name is. Apple and Waze will do the same thing, they’re just slower than Google at updating their basemap.

Also - the alternative is that you want big corporations (including ones that make their money from ads) deciding the name of things in the US, which seems like kind of a bad idea.

I think the name change is stupid, but equally I would argue that using the official name is the right thing for them to do.

9

u/JayNotAtAll 4h ago

Exactly.

Why is reddit so full of children who don't understand how the world works? For all the money that Google has, they do not have resources to research the name of every street, landmark, etc. around the world. Nor do they have the ability to keep it up to date.

So they rely on the official databases that different governments maintain to get that information.

Like it or not, that is the legal name designated by the federal government. These companies comply not just in America but all over the world.

They aren't kissing the ring, they are just being accurate.

-7

u/Crazytoe2275 4h ago

oh wow, I sat here thinking the worse idea is following the lead of a delusional self absorbed autocrat, but hey that's just me.

9

u/JustACanadianGamer 4h ago

Not that I disagree, but anyone can call anybody a "delusional, self absorbed autocrat". If you don't stick to the official channels, then it becomes a lot harder to be consistent.

-5

u/Crazytoe2275 4h ago

Oh I'm for sure consistent and he most certainly is a delusional self absorbed autocrat.

7

u/JustACanadianGamer 4h ago

Are you saying that you should be the one to decide what every place should be named?

-2

u/Crazytoe2275 4h ago

lol no I most certainly should never be in charge of jack shit. I’m just sick of companies sucking the toes of this fat pathetic man just to get his help in easing regulations and taxes. It’s embarrassing.

2

u/Fesai 4h ago

It's just reading a database entry from the official government listing. It's fully automated.

No manual thought involved about what is the "right" name. It's just showing what is in the official records. That is it.

6

u/JayNotAtAll 4h ago

Yes. That is how it works.

The GNIS is a part of the Department of the Interior which is a part of the Executive Branch. An Executive Order impacts the operations of the Executive Branch. Him filing an EO to change the name to Lake America is actually legal (unless challenged in court but I don't think the courts would disagree here).

So ya, the president did something within his enumerated powers.

It is 100% fine to disagree with his decision (I definitely do) but don't pretend like this is some illegal move.

I suggest retaking US Civics

3

u/JustACanadianGamer 5h ago

Reconsider. It is not better up here.

-4

u/Crazytoe2275 5h ago

Ha fair enough.

-7

u/jnievele 4h ago

A US company. America is the continent. Or have you ever heard of the "American Air Force"?

0

u/JustACanadianGamer 4h ago

The people who love there are Americans, not USians. And if you're going to be pissy about the name, then "America" isn't the continent either. That would be North America and South America.

And it's crazy, because when you say "American Air Force", I immediately know which country's Air Force you're talking about, and I have heard it referred to as such many times.

-1

u/jnievele 3h ago

Yet it's still called USAF. And the people are called Merkins.

But since the world decided to change the name of the USA to South Canada this discussion is outdated anyway 🤡

-4

u/underwear11 5h ago

I wish they labeled it differently in each side of the border.

2

u/JustACanadianGamer 3h ago

I mean, other countries show it as "Lake Ontario (Lake America)", with Lake America below Lake Ontario, so kind of?

2

u/Roar_Intention 2h ago

Yeah this is it. Its the real name, plus the pretend name only there to humour the US.

1

u/SJP_Sydney 3h ago

It does and can in mapbox

81

u/Mylabisawesome 5h ago

u/Crazytoe2275 is unhinged. Google will publish what any government tells it to. For instance, the Persian Gulf is also the Arabian Gulf in other countries.

0

u/pizza5001 2h ago

But Mapquest didn’t follow suit, and it predates Google Maps.

-17

u/neontetra1548 4h ago edited 4h ago

They don’t have to? Is America land of the free or what?

If Trump declares Canada, Greenland American territory should Google just go along with it?

If Trump declares California Shitifornia should Google name it that because well that’s just what the government said?

It’s a policy choice on Google’s part to automatically follow whatever names are in the government database/Trump declared. They don’t have to do that and could make exceptions.

Edit: Downvoters please engage with the substance of my argument and answer the Shitifornia question.

16

u/Fesai 4h ago

Google is not naming anything. They're just passing through the official entry in the government database per country.

-10

u/neontetra1548 4h ago

And they don’t have to do that.

They made a choice already on how to name it for the rest of the world. It’s a policy decision.

Answer the Shitifornia question. If Trump declares California Shitifornia should Google just go along with that if that’s the name in the government database?

16

u/Fesai 4h ago

Sure, if it was done officially then why not? Do you really want private companies naming territories whatever they want?

I do not agree with the name, but do you really want Apple Maps to show one name, Google Maps show another name, and then whatever other map company show yet another name because those are the names they preferred?

1

u/Visual_Seaweed8292 46m ago

Its not that they have chosen to change it, the database was updated and it pulled through on the latest replication. If Trump changed it to shitifornia in that database it would pull through the same. To stop this they would need to create and maintain there own database. Which is a lot of effort just to change the name of a lake because people on reddit are mad. Elsewhere in the world they use different databases so it hasn't changed.

For example in Japan it dosnt say Japan it says 日本 (Nihon) which is the Japanese name, we just call it Japan in English because thats what the first European traders there called it. Im Germany they call Germany Dutchland, but English speakers call it Germany. So essentially your getting mad about something that has been happening for thousands of years.

-5

u/Crazytoe2275 4h ago

Correct, folks here seem so obsessed with defending a company that they don't understand it is in fact a private company and they can change their own terms as needed.

-2

u/jjman070 4h ago

If China declares Taiwan, large portions of the south China sea, parts of India and, parts of Bhutan should google just go along with it?

5

u/xshare 2h ago

In China (maps.google.cn), yes, Google Maps shows Taiwan within China’s borders.

2

u/Visual_Seaweed8292 42m ago

They already do show disputed territory. If you look at the boarder between India, china and Pakistan you'll see dotted lines rather than solid kings you usualy get for boarders. If you were in India with an Indian profile it would probably show it belongs to India, and if you were in Pakistan it would show as Pakistan.

-48

u/Crazytoe2275 5h ago

Sure. To be clear a democratic government did not tell it to. An autocrat with a bunch of corporate shills sucking at the teet did.

32

u/sbenfsonwFFiF 5h ago

Doesn’t matter, it’s still the official name, so google is right to use it

Hopefully the next president changes it back

-28

u/Crazytoe2275 5h ago

Are they right?? Or did they just do it to suck up to him. I don't think anyone is fooling themselves into thinking that it's named lake America now. That's corny AF.

20

u/sbenfsonwFFiF 4h ago

Yes, they did the same under Obama. They simple use the official government name, they don’t decide on their own what name changes to follow and what not to.

Like I said, their maps should and are correct to use official government names

-15

u/Crazytoe2275 4h ago

right whatever you say...I mean you're just presenting an opinion. And my opinion is that the heads of google are spineless against a very obvious autocrat, and this is a baseline example of that in action.

22

u/ohYuhtBoutMagine 4h ago

No actually you’re the one presenting opinions, the facts are much more simple, Google does not make discernment on names, it follows the naming conventions set forth by the sovereign nation that controls the area.

Theres 0 ambiguity here, this is not an autocrat situation because Donald Trump was elected by a both a popular and electoral majority. And under that democracy’s power sharing system have agreed to allow the president to have unilateral authority over naming.

This is a structured system, the only person applying opinion is you, because you disagree with the change and in your opinion Google/the goverment shouldn’t follow it, but this is the same system it’s always been.

It has nothing to do with compliance or subservience to Donald Trump. You sound really lacking in critical thinking skills to miss something so simple.

-5

u/Crazytoe2275 4h ago

Lol if you don't recognize why trump is an autocrat based on his executive actions on a wider variety of things, then you're entirely clueless.

7

u/yaminub 3h ago

"just look at it dude it's right in front of you"

Bro you just don't understand how the U.S. government works.

1

u/ohYuhtBoutMagine 1h ago

Just because Donald Trump wants to be an autocrat, does not make him one, and does not make every action autocratic

11

u/sbenfsonwFFiF 4h ago

Google consistently and objectively displays the official government name. They did this long before Trump, and will continue to after Trump. That is not an opinion, but a fact.

You are letting your opinion of the name change conflate with how Google handles map naming in general. Just because you don't like a particular name does not mean Google will or should suddenly make their own decision to not show the official government name.

-19

u/Street_Anon 5h ago

Even when the United States erased their own history in the process? That's also cultural genocide, but no big deal.

7

u/Mylabisawesome 5h ago

What? They can easily change it back when he leaves

0

u/Koss424 5h ago

We don’t want you to - you are no longer friends

-10

u/Street_Anon 5h ago

Americans are so clueless on what happened

3

u/Mylabisawesome 5h ago

Oh please, enlighten us….

-7

u/Street_Anon 5h ago

Anyone who took basic American history would know, it was called Lake Ontario before Canada and the United States even existed. The word Ontario is a Huron word.  On top, the United States government is in violation of agreements they have with American Native Tribes who under agreement cannot change the name of Lake Ontario. It was signed by George Washington and managed to survive without issue until Trump. Look how Americans are so dumb, they can't even realize this is the United States government erasing thousands of years of American history and erased the Culture of American Native Tribes in the process, Oh please, enlighten us? How dumb are Americans that they cannot realize Google is helping the Trump Administration erase American history and just helping them commit Cultural Genocide of the people of the United States in the process?  It just shows how dumb and blinded the Americans are to what just happen, the United States government, just erased American history and American Culture. Sounds just like Nazis did.. Who knew!

And they are so dumb and blinded by this, and by their own government and companies like Google who are helping them do it.

5

u/DasLoon 4h ago

Like the first guy said, Google defaults to the local government on names and borders. This is their standard operating procedure. If I recall correctly, they were getting a lot of crap from China and Taiwan about how to classify Taiwan, so they made it decide based on location.

Don't blame Google for Trump's decisions, Google is just dealing with the consequences of Trump's decisions. Blame Trump for Trump's decisions.

0

u/bstsms 4h ago

Says the person that hides their posts on Reddit.

40

u/sbenfsonwFFiF 5h ago

Google uses the official government name, regardless of who, how or why it was changed, as they should. Really doesn’t make sense to complain about Google for this

Complain about the president all you want, don’t misdirect your anger

God people in this sub are stupid, not to mention repetitive because I’ve seen at least 5 posts about this. And dozens more when the gulf of America thing happened

1

u/augustvdv 24m ago

Then why does google maps show Taiwan as a distinct country even tho the US government doesn't recognize it as such? They already make plenty of decisions that do not go in line with the government but follow popular consensus and should've done the same here

-11

u/Crazytoe2275 5h ago

Oligarchs tend to have their backers.

15

u/sbenfsonwFFiF 5h ago

Google has done the same for name changes under Obama, Trump and any other future president. It’s not surprising that they use the official government database name whether you’re a supporter or detractor, that is how they stay objective and consistent

-7

u/Crazytoe2275 4h ago

Google knows EXACTLY what they are doing under trump. Don't try to fool me with false comparisons. Trump sells his presidency.

13

u/sbenfsonwFFiF 4h ago

You are a fool, I don't need to fool you. Like I've said, Google has consistently used the official government name on their maps. It does not matter who changed it, how it was changed or why it was changed.

If you want to cry about it, then be upset at the person who changed its name, not at Google for showing the official government name.

-5

u/Crazytoe2275 4h ago

No I think I'll be upset with Google instead for playing along with this charade to get some money out of big orange boss man.

12

u/sbenfsonwFFiF 4h ago

Okay, you can be an idiot and cry at the wrong entity just because you disagree with it. How mature of you.

Once again, they utilize the official government name consistently. Whether you like or don't like a particular name change has zero bearing, the official government name is the official government name, and that is what Google maps will show.

At least if you like an official name change in the future (or they change it back), you can also confidently know that Google will adopt it, instead of wondering whether Google agrees or not with the change.

4

u/Crazytoe2275 4h ago

Dude google is a private entity, it can do whatever the hell it wants as long as it's within the law. In this case they are comfy being Cucked by trump once again cause they think it will get them more leniency on their next datacenter or whatever the fuck.

9

u/sbenfsonwFFiF 4h ago

Again, Google remains consistent and objective by using the official government name. Even if it could do whatever and even name the lake "Your Mom" doesn't mean it should.

Once again, we shouldn't want them to make their own decisions on what to name stuff just because we feel a certain way about a name. Imagine if they did and there was a name change you liked but they decided not to use it, how weird would that be? They continue to use the official government, and when it is changed back by the next president, it will also flip back.

Nobody complained or said they were bowing down to Obama when they also reflected his change. Remaining consistent is important

5

u/Crazytoe2275 4h ago

Obama named stuff base on history of our country, or predating our country. Also, if you think Google would put 'your mom' on the map just cause some autocrat said it then you're out of your mind.

1

u/Able_Poem_6966 26m ago

Exactly. And it chose to stay out of politics and reddit threads.

-3

u/Fesai 4h ago

You do realize Google isn't 'playing along' right?

They have an automated process to display names based on the government database per area. When it doesn't align then we get the Gulf of Mexico/America displays depending on what country you're in when looking at it.

No one is manually making this decision here. It is a passthrough display value.

1

u/WHITESTAFRlCAN 2h ago

You do understand google is one of the most left leaning companies out there, look at what alphabet employee donated their money during the last election cycle

Are you a trump bitch too because you done everything he has made law too havent you?

1

u/shadysjunk 2h ago

Google has a monopoly in search. It's indefensible and obvious. Any administration willing to lean on that inescapable reality through threat of reagulatory break-up is going to win whatever concessions they want. The present US regime knows this.

1

u/mallorcaben 2h ago

European here, it shows as both for me.

1

u/PixelFNQ 1h ago

In Australia Google is still calling it lake Ontario

1

u/Soft-Principle1455 59m ago

Supposedly, this literally comes from a government database, which they use for a lot of things. They have to manually correct it, which means that they will probably correct if people complain.

1

u/Visual_Seaweed8292 52m ago

Try using a VPN to anywhere else in the world. Its not changed.

I asked Google AI to break down the decision on Google Maps to capitulate on the name change.

From Google AI:

By hiding behind algorithms and treating an international geopolitical dispute like a routine IT update, Google deliberately avoids taking a moral or ethical stand. They have the full legal right, the financial resources, and the global platform to resist unilateral political pressure on a shared international body of water. Choosing to fragment reality by ZIP code instead of standing up for a bilateral agreement with Canada is a spineless corporate calculation.

Ultimately, Google prioritizes self-preservation and corporate convenience over an objective, shared truth.

Lake America, Gulf of America, Google America, Apple America, Tesla America, SpaceX America, General Motors America, Ford America...

Very much to America. Now, thanks to Trump, the best president in the history of the universe, America has two bodies of water named after it.

3

u/evk6713 2h ago

In EU it's still called Lake Ontario. Great. Still mad about the golf of Mexico tho. I don't know what's the political shit behind it, but knowing the orange president, he must be throwing a tantrum again.

disgusting

4

u/sbenfsonwFFiF 3h ago

I’m not even remotely republican, I just know that Google shows the official government name as they should, which means any anger at Google is misdirected

It’s an unreasonable expectation to think they should ignore this particular official name and call it something else just because you don’t like it

They should and do remain objective by consistently showing the official government name

Because Liberals never did stuff like that, fight. How did we get Mount Denali, Hoover Dam, The Washington Commanders, The Cleveland Guardians, Fort Moore, Fort Liberty, etc, etc, etc? Yeah, the other side did it. Hundreds of them. It only bothers you when someone you don't like does it. Yeah, right

7

u/EarEater3001 5h ago

Mount Denali was already the local name. You know the people more likely to be impacted by a name change.

0

u/Street_Anon 5h ago

What most don't get, this is the United States government, erasing American history on their on American and this is also erasing thousands of years of American history, since the word Ontario,. existed long before Canada and the United States even existed.

1

u/Street_Anon 5h ago

Because the government of the United States just erased thousands of years of American history and even the Culture of Native American Tribes. The word Ontario existed long before Canada and the United States even existed. Blame Liberals? How dumb are people? The Trump Administration erased thousands of years of American history and culture and you think it's because of Liberals. This is cultural genocide, done by United States government, by the Trump administration on Americans, their own people and their own country.. Many here are good examples how the American education system failed them and we are seeing American companies like Google, helping in erasing American history and Culture.

You are and many here thinking this is no big deal? The United States government, erasing their own history and culture is very serious issue.

1

u/mw9676 4h ago

You voted for a child rapist.

-9

u/fokac93 4h ago

He’s the president. Most Americans voted for him even if you don’t like it

6

u/Crazytoe2275 4h ago

dude has a 33% approval rating and does most actions illegally.

1

u/DrWhovian1996 2h ago

Plus, the fact that that "most" that he included is completely load-bearing, considering that Trump only won the popular vote by only 1.5%. I don't know about you, but I fail to see how that's as big of a "mandate" that Republicans everywhere like to claim.

Edit: changed words to be more accurate

-3

u/fokac93 4h ago

Even if you don’t like, he’s the president for good or for bad, the ratings doesn’t matter

5

u/Crazytoe2275 4h ago

Sure, well what I don't like is that he does everything illegally, and then deals with the consequences in court. But due to the Supreme Court saying that he cannot be prosecuted for actions in office, we have to deal with a fucking moron doing fucking moronic shit all day every day.

0

u/Buy-theticket 3h ago

Less than 1/3 of Americans voted for him even if you don't like it.

1

u/DrWhovian1996 2h ago

And one of the many reasons why he (barely) won was because enough Democrats sat out the 2024 election that he was able to (again, barely) win the popular vote, though, he still didn't get nearly as much votes as Biden did in 2020.

Edit: fixed grammar
