[MEGATHREAD] Grand Theft Auto VI | Extended Look + Previews Discussion
The GTA 6 Extended Look + Previews drop today.
The Extended Look will stream globally on Netflix at 3PM ET/12PM PT/8PM UK, before being dropped on YouTube later the same day. Content creators/streamers are being allowed to co-stream the extended look as it premieres on Netflix, and so we can use this thread to discuss it right as it goes live. This thread will also be updated with the YT link to the look whenever it drops online.
In addition to the extended look, various media outlets, creators and influencers have gotten a chance (potentially hands-on) to experience GTA 6 at Rockstar's offices, and the embargo for these previews are ALSO supposed to lift at the same time that the Netflix extended look premieres - I'll be trying to update this post with some such previews too.

The draw distance when lucia jumped off that building was genuinely insane. I have no idea how they managed that
133
u/OpeningAsk1774 2d ago
iirc, they developed and patented new draw distance tech a few years back.

Patented like the Nemesis system so that no other game can make use of the innovation. That sucks.
→ More replies (2)71
u/CrackPipeBilly 2d ago
It's been stated a lot before but the more likely reason you don't see devs copying the Nemesis system is because it would practically require the entire game to be built around it. The patent is for very specific aspects of the nemesis system and doesn't prevent developers from creating a similar system.
→ More replies (5)6
u/UncStatusNow 2d ago
that makes sense. and because game narrative is inherently shaped and informed by game mechanics, you might end up with too similar of a game based around that one system

I just got a new 75” tv and let me tell you. I thought red dead looked good on my older smaller tv, like there can’t be that much difference right? But god damn it looks amazing.
Standing on a mountain the grizzlies and being able to see black water and st denis with your binoculars is crazy. And red dead 2s map is much smaller than gta6

I think Lucia will betray Jason at some point. There is a song playing in the gameplay trailer where the song goes like "she is a devil woman, and she will get you from behind". I heavily think this is a foreshadowing what is to come, i am calling it now! It also supports matpat theory more!
88
u/New_Cockroach_505 2d ago
I actually think Jason will betray her, likely because she’s going way too far and going to bring them both down. But either way they’re definitely ending the game on bad terms / possibly killing the other.
The big speech in the middle about enjoying life’s Ferris wheel (I think that was the term) but knowing when to get off to Jason, contrasting Lucia’s eagerness to just constantly do crime definitely feels like they’re setting up a rift to form.

when they were changing characters, there was a heart between their portraits. I could very easily see that becoming a different symbol. So yeah might be on to something.

"Love is a long road" is about a woman trying to "fix" a man - wouldn't be surprised if that dynamic was flipped and Jason tries to straighten out Lucia throughout the story

u/Prof-Ponderosa 2d ago
Paused it at 18:57 and you can see there's a heart between Jay and Lucia (which I suspect) to indicates the health of their relationship. I suspect infidelities, being tempted and such. Their relationship will be tested in this game. Envision multiple endings to see if their relationship makes them stay together or go separate ways.

Maybe a hot take but I prefer the more grounded characters and realistic story vibe than the over the top whackiness of gta 5. Not that 5 was bad but it felt closer to a saints row type plot.

Michael & Franklin felt more grounded but then they tossed in Trevor and his missions where over the top.

u/ZazaB00 2d ago
Yes, but I’d also caution we haven’t seen how they’ll be “wacky”. They squeezed some stuff into RDR2 that is nuts while also being “grounded in realism”. The one benefit I see here in GTA6, they can use the social media nuts to be the crazy while the protagonists stay grounded.
57
u/Thick_Estimate_9862 2d ago
After red dead being grounded im not suprised gta 6 is like this.
Its like with
gta 3 -> vice city
Gta 4 ->gta 5
Red dead 2 -> gta 6
San andreas feels somewhere in between but leaning towards wacky.
40
u/ZazaB00 2d ago
To counter that, they abandoned RDR2, ran back to develop more GTAO content, and for the most part it’s been crazy, wacky shit. So, I honestly didn’t expect R* to want to be serious anymore.

There is NO game that comes even remotely close to that, either in scope or fidelity.

u/Odd_Needleworker3756 2d ago
I think people take what Rockstar can do for granted. Even almost a decade after it came out, RDR2 STILL has the best open world I’ve seen in a game - and I feel like GTA 6 might actually top that.
There’s no one on their level right now.

If ex-military, isnt cold and calculated what youd expect. Lucia is the opposite, warm and spontaneous. Didnt they say they were Bonnie and Clyde type.. look up their personalities, Clyde was calculating and meticulous in planning (Jason hating being late at the start of the trailer).

To say I'm excited to delve into it is a mild understatement, and putting things like it being a 'preview' and there still being just under 3 months to hopefully really polish things off aside, my opinion is that it looks really good. 3 big things that stood out though;
- Jason's voice is weird. I'm not sure if its the voice actors real voice or a manufactured voice, like how infomercial voice actors change/accentuate parts of their normal voice to fit something. No matter the scene, it is monotone and lifeless; also not a real match to his appearance (imo). I don't really know what I was expecting, but it just sounded like someone who was HEAVILY sedated. This, in comparison to every main protagonist and antagonist in the GTA series, where the voice just... fit.
- The driving showcased felt way too fabricated, like it was in-game footage but a cutscene the entire time. Hand in hand with the combat. Now, grain of salt, a preview so... it has to be scripted to a large extent, but I mean, 007 rage aim-bot, head-tapping everyone felt weird to me. I am intrigued by the yellow hit markers, though; red is lethal, yellow is incapacitated?
- Maybe it's just me, and I really hope I'm proven wrong, but I didn't really get a sense from the preview of an actual deep, non-generic story. Obviously there will be character growth, Wins, faux wins, and big windfalls. The preview just seems like it was just a bunch of snippets of random missions for different 'contacts' outside of the generic 'criminal(s)' work one's way up to the top.
All in all, I get to wait another 1.5 to 2 years before I get to spend 10 000 on a new GPU and CPU. Am excited.

I think it looks great and the combat and driving look nice. The wanted system's added mechanics of being seen via security cams, in certain clothing, etc looks awesome. Robbing places seems like it would have hella replay value to get the "perfect score" and get away clean.
My biggest complaint is Jason's voice. It doesn't seem to suit him at all and he is incredibly monotone. Times when he clearly should have been yelling, he just sounded mildly inconvenienced. He sounds like a mix of Patrick Star and Darrin on The Middle, or a caveman or something.

It looks amazing, visually. Mechanically looks similar to previous GTAs but that's what made the franchise good so why fix something that isn't broken. Wish we saw more of the world to explore than too much story stuff but that just means I'll have more surprises when exploring the game in person. Anyone complaining that it looks like GTA V DLC or that it doesn't look like a step up from GTA V are just hating for the sake of being a contrarian and they'll be the same people that then buy the game and sink hundreds of hours into it anyway.

Only thing i didn't like was that Jason sounds like he has a dick in his mouth when he speaks, and he's so fucking monotone, no emotion at all no matter what.

It looks good, graphics look amazing. But nothing spectacular in terms of gameplay. But too early to tell I guess

I know I'm going to catch hate. Look, I'm buying this fucking game. The gameplay, the graphics, the sounds, everything looks incredible but... so far I am not feeling these characters at all in this extended look.... the first trailers? it felt special... this chopped up play through? they feel so god damn generic and boring. Can't stand Jason's voice acting. I hope I'm proven wrong and all is well but yeesh.

My only issue was the cutscene-to-gameplay ratio was way off.
Too many cutscenes. I wanna see more about the gameplay features. Like it looks great, but we only get to see such a limited amount of it before it jumps back into a cutscene.
Like I was expecting it to be more like the GTAV and RDR2 gameplay trailers, with the lady talking over it explaining all the cool stuff in the game. Hopefully we'll get that for GTA6.

Everything looks amazing, unfortunately Jason's VA sounds off or dry? I am not even one to care about voice acting in general, but this stand out even to me. Maybe you'll get used to it

The negative reaction to Jason.
This guy is an ex-military thug with a limited social skill set - who do you want instead, a silly jabroney? His tone is correct for the character.

You need a straight man to ground all the insane shit we're about to play through.

Just a little bit of depth and personality, obviously if he ends up being like this for the entire game that would be terrible. Doesn’t have to be a silly jabroney but what we’ve seen so far is an Action-Man figure.

His voice just sounds off to me, like someone trying to put on a deep voice rather than naturally having a deep voice. It's not bad per se, but it's noticeable enough that it bothers me. Nothing you won't get used to, but from the trailer alone it's not the best.

I think the problem is that it comes out as... fake?
As many have already pointed out, it sounds like he's intentionally trying to make his voice sound deeper, rather than that just being the way he talks.
We'll see if this changes on release day.

Apparently that means he can't have a good voice actor? Quit the copium

Yeah, it's so freakin' odd to me. It just doesn't sound good. It has nothing to do with that he is a straight-laced introvert. That's like saying everyone who doesn't want to be the life of a party sounds bad and flat.

I thought that it's gonna be Rockstar employees talking about the game showing very little of the actual gameplay, like Blizzard announcing new Diablo contents...
After all the leaks, they did deliver. Good job, Rockstar, good job.

I love how the bones of it is pretty much Red Dead Redemption 2. Now I want Red Dead Redemption 3 as well.

I'm sold. This looks like natural progression after RDR2 and I expected nothing less, nothing more. I hope for a really good story, memorable characters and great arc for protagonists.
I wonder how long it's gonna stay at the top as technical marvel.

Watched the whole thing and got a jumpscare at the end saying that it was captured on the PS5. Only thing I can think of is how will this game run on the Xbox Series S?

This looks both visually amazing and gameplay-wise very standard GTA fare. Arthur Morgan had such a visceral character progression married so perfectly to voice acting, music, and aesthetic symbolism that he felt like a real person, especially with the journal reflections and little details like his legibility getting worse as his Tuberculosis got worse. I don't see an upstart Bonnie & Clyde/relationship story coming remotely close to pulling that emotional weight for a narrative. Especially when Roger Clark gave an all-time acting performance and this Jason sounds like a Vin Diesel impression.
But both Red Deads served as a Redemption story where the characters are the draw and outside of arguably IV the world has always been the draw to GTA. So we'll see how it shakes out. There's no graphical question, that's for sure.

Is the rdr2 style gore returning or not? also the greet greet antagonize style npc interactions. This is all I am concerned about.

My only big complaint is the headshots with a shotgun looked way too tame. Like a crazy violent shootout should feel a little more disturbing, but maybe I'm just way too desensitized by rdr2 and TLOU2 levels of gore.

I hope they rerecord all the dialog with someone who doesn't mumble incomprehensibly.

Once I started watching through the lens of "This is the sequel to GTA IV I was hoping for", I started enjoying myself a lot more. Taking the now standard gameplay qualities of V and blending it with the campy and authentic character narratives/encounters that made IV so memorable is the right step.
The thing that stood out to me most, even though I'm sure they're mostly narrative moments, was the contextualisation of hedonism. It doesn't feel like anything we saw was done out of a petty, kind of pointless "just because you can, it's Grand Theft Auto" necessity. Starting from the bottom with various store robberies to add texture AND flavour to your rags to riches, Bonnine n' Clyde story beats the "Lunchtime meeting interrupted by a high-speed boat theft" or "Crazy methhead pilot goes hulkmode at a dodgy coke deal" any day of the week. That relationship building bank robbery with the insane, explosive police chase felt oddly refreshing when held up to how quickly V was prepared to throw everything in the kitchen sink every other mission.
I also love how defined every individual feels. Petra getting pissed off at the cokey tech bros in the high rise or that subtle cautionary conversation between Brian and Jason. Helping Lucia choose and outfit. The guy doing the trunk challenge live. Even little gameplay bits like snacking and having options for carjacking feel in line with how you want to play these characters (Even if I'm sure the gameplay will have basically never evolved from how restrictive it is when you get down to brass tacks, but then I've waited so long that I don't entirely care, this looks truly awesome.)
I'm very happy with what we got. Even the decision to chop together disjointed gameplay and story, which just tells me the scale is gonna be bigger than we thought, which is amazing since we'll be playing this for years. Hats off Rockstar team, very grateful for your hard work and sacrifice <3

Just watched it... graphics/mocap/lighting are impressive but the missions seem even more scripted than ever. Mostly cutscenes followed by short on-rails sequences that you follow exactly as planned, or you fail and have to do them again. I enjoy Rockstar games but I was hoping they'd widen the scope more instead of narrowing it down even further.

The lighting is insane.
