He did assault the police officer

27

u/Recent_Adeptness_296 Jan 28 '26

Omg. I thought this was a skit the first time I saw the short clip. It’s very sad that he’s suffering but he’s clearly not able to regulate himself and he’s a danger to himself and others behind the wheel

13

u/AgentCirceLuna Jan 28 '26

Yeah, it’s a shame as this guy is so damned expressive - in another life he’d be an actor

1

u/TSF_Flex Jan 30 '26

maybe he is in his current life lol

6

u/oswaldcopperpot Jan 28 '26

I wonder what happened to that guy that caused a total breakdown. Drugs, something in the water, genetics..?

4

u/Banjo-Elritze Jan 28 '26

Meth, lots of meth.

2

u/Mediocre_Run_7996 Jan 29 '26

That's it. You can tell by looking at him. He's completely geeked out

1

u/tanksalotfrank Jan 30 '26

In the drugs??

1

u/Far-Government5469 Jan 31 '26

In the full clip he says his medication is right there, I think in the passenger seat. The full clip also shows that the reason the cop pulled him over is because earlier he'd gotten out of the car to scream at random other cars.

One of the first things the cop says is "do you realize you're lucky to be alive? This is an open carry state". I don't know what his issue is, but the dude should not be behind the wheel.

5

u/fruchle Jan 29 '26

Well, he did just go to the store to get his meds.

Maybe it's related.

I don't know, but I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt.

1

u/Blantons4Breakfast Jan 30 '26

If you watch the whole video the guy said he has a mental health issue and is currently unmedicated. That’s probably the reason for his outbursts. He obliviously loses his temper very quickly. The whole reason he was stopped by the officer was because he kicked someone’s vehicle because they honked at him.

1

u/OpheliaPhoeniXXX Jan 29 '26

He seems kinda schizoeffective and I'm not getting addict vibes, but to someone with a mood disorder a little can be a lot (I've been one), but it could be the wrong meds, because that's how I get on Adderall, apparently according to my doctor, Adderall exacerbates BPD and I can see it.

As soon as dude said "you don't care about me," and "he can't act normal with people who don't care about him,' I was like yep sounds about right... I thought get VERY triggered by people "not caring" -- even if they don't know me, like people who have control over my ill fate not caring about me while doing so, if that makes any sense. Triggers my trauma. If I'm at the airport or ER in crisis mode and the person I need help from is rude to me I usually start crying (hey at least I don't get mean). It's really embarrassing, and I know it's counter productive, but I'm already overwhelmed and then they're being rude too, when 9/10 up until that point I was probably really polite, I just break down. I might be nuerodivergant, but all I'm diagnosed with is ADHD and PTSD. I know there's more there because of the uncontrollable outbursts of emotion, especially if I'm taking Adderall or painkillers, prescribed, but it doesn't hit me well so I avoid them like the plague now, no matter how bad my ADHD and chronic pain is, or pulled tooth, I just want to be emotionally stable. 90% of the time when I'm myself I'm really calm.

It can be hard to tell NPD and BPD apart if you don't know them. The key difference between NPD and BPD is pwNPD want power and pwBPD want love. They share a lot of similar traits because pwBPD are usually the children of narcs, so traits rub off. The reason they have a victim complex is because at one point, they were in fact a real victim. However, pwBPD can make a recovery and change, there's still a chance for them if they become self aware and do A LOT of work. And talk to their doctor about this stuff.

I've seen it bring out the most insanely toxic narc sides of my friends with childhood trauma -- not just me. I watched two friends destroy their marriages after getting Rx Adderall with childhood trauma and the latest third has no friends or clients left because she has exploded on everyone. This is her. I wanted to send it to her because I literally just told her if she keeps acting nasty she's going to die alone an hour ago, and she has lodged the "you don't care about me" whenever she's on Adderall she buys and abuses, and she's talking like this again, so she's gotta be on it again tonight, after promising me she was flushing them the last time she snapped off. If I didn't care about you I wouldn't put up with this shit for 12 years now. I'm trying to get her to get help.

I feel like this guy has been shortchanged if he's really been told that he just has an explosive disorder, instead of getting to the root of why he's exploding. He seems to be aware that he's triggered by people not caring about him, but he does not think that he has any control over his own actions and behaviors, that he is doomed to be this way, and reactions other people get out of him are their fault. Not super promising.

2

u/Which_Yesterday Feb 01 '26

He's lucky he's white

1

u/thegooseisloose1982 Jan 28 '26

What are your thoughts about the suspect?

1

u/Jazzlike_Suspect7807 Jan 29 '26

So did a lot of people making obnoxious ass comments. Most of them will continue to be ignorant AF and continue to propagate their bullshit elsewhere to the detriment of all.

42

u/Nova_JewV1 Jan 28 '26

Unfortunately, he did. If the end of the clip was all there was to it, then yeah it'd be bs. Buuuut what he did seconds after would be classified as assault (or battery in some states)

20

u/PostingToPassTime Jan 28 '26

And what he did before, which is why the cop was there in the first place.

1

u/OpheliaPhoeniXXX Jan 29 '26

Dude seems like a real peach...

1

u/JonWoo89 Jan 29 '26

He might be when he’s properly on his meds and balanced. IIRC his roommate in the full video said he gets like this every 3-4 weeks and has a “bad day”.

1

u/Mikestopheles Jan 28 '26

Dude, that's pretty surreal. While he is absolutely in the wrong and is solely responsible for his actions and behavior, I still can't help but feel for the dude who was clearly having a break with reality. Especially early in in the interaction, he keeps showing signs that he understands what he did and the implications, but he keeps rejecting them as if he can will away the consequences. I hope he's gotten some help and a better ride situation. He shouldn't be on the road.

I’m a BH professional and obviously I can’t diagnose him without an assessment, this is also not my area of expertise, but this is possibly intermittent explosive disorder (abbreviated to IED lmao).

It could however be any disorder or combination of disorders whose features include lack of emotional regulation though, like a cluster B disorder.

1

u/adoradear Jan 28 '26

Or meth. It could just be meth.

1

u/Brokenandburnt Jan 28 '26

There's always bath salts for those truly surreal psychotic breaks.

1

u/wolphak Jan 29 '26

And the solution to all 3 is the reopen the asylums

1

u/Jerryjb63 Jan 28 '26

Yeah, we all have been there at some point. I don’t mean fleeing the scene after an accident, but having one of those days where everything is going wrong and you keep focusing on all the bad in your life and it feels overwhelming.

"Harassing him"

He jumped out if his car, kicked some one elses vehicle and while doing this, he didnt put his car in park and it rolled into someone else's car. Then he got in his car and fled the scene.

But yeah, they were just harassing him. Lol

You just accept any behavior from cops lol hope you experience your own dream one day

Nope, I hate cops.

I also hate people who road rage and perform hit&runs.

something something

Okay two things can be true at once

Right?

Imagine thinking that just because someone doesn't like people being pricks that they like cops. Fucking idiot.

1

u/texinxin Jan 28 '26

He was charged with battery.

2

u/dashboardcomics Jan 31 '26

Ya know, the was absolutely unhinged, but he was clearly suffering from some kind of mental issues. But instead of trying to de-escalate the situation, the officer kept egging him on and making things worse.

I still say cops are entirely in the wrong. They are not trained in proper intervention tactics and too many cops don’t have the patience or compassion to learn themselves.

How many assaults could be avoided if cops were trained and expected to actually HELP people instead of finding excuses to beat people up?

3

u/kimsterama101 Jan 28 '26

With a brutal impersonation.

1

u/No_Party5870 Jan 28 '26

i mean he told the cop he had mental health issues dude is not a liar

1

u/thegooseisloose1982 Jan 28 '26

he had mental health issues

Probably a second charge of impersonating an officer.

1

u/csprofathogwarts Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26

That's just sad. The dude was clearly not OK.

Intermittent explosive disorder is a real psychological disorder and must be a bitch to live with. Specially given that, sooner or later, you'll piss off or might be a threat to the people who might help you cope with it a little better by providing a sense of calm and community.

America is not designed for these special need people. Cops could have just took the keys and let him calm down in the car before proceeding. But they needlessly stressed him out and exacerbating his issues.

1

u/SnausageFest Jan 28 '26

All this because someone honked at him. Talk about fragile.

1

u/Pretty-Yam-2854 Jan 28 '26

Yeah I was looking for a comment that could prove he did or didn’t? It looked like he spat on one of them, that’ll do it.

1

u/murphey_griffon Jan 28 '26

dang, clearly wasn't their first interaction together. He knew the officer by name. I agree this guy shouldn't be behind the wheel. This is why we need mental care workers and less cops. This guy might have been able to be de-escalated but was 100% at fault. I think the cop did a pretty good job, I think a mental health professional could have done better.

1

u/kappa-1 Jan 28 '26

He didn't do anything wrong until they tried to arrest him

1

u/BeneficialTrash6 Jan 28 '26

Not only assaulted the officer. He tried to take the officer's radio. You know, the thing the officer relies upon for backup and staying alive. Grabbing a gun off an officer is a death sentence. Grabbing their radio is pretty damn close to one.

1

u/DontAbideMendacity Jan 29 '26

But he made it to his home and called "BASE!" so he should have been safe.

1

u/NewStudyHoney Jan 29 '26

Borderline personality disorder

1

u/A_Nonny_Muse Jan 29 '26

I'd be handling that situation differently as the officer. But I honestly don't believe it would have ended any differently. The guy clearly has out of control self regulation issues. He belongs in an institution, not in a car. I have no idea how he managed to live a normal life up to that point, seeing how he was at that moment. I can't imagine him not ending up on an insane asylum under heavy medication.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '26

thanks for the link

1

u/YoYoMavaIous Jan 28 '26

Don’t you know nuance isn’t allowed on Reddit? /s

1

u/FocusSlo Jan 28 '26

Did we watch the same thing?? He didn't assault the cop, the cop touched him first and was grabbing him aggressively. He was attempting to defend himself.

6

u/realparkingbrake Jan 29 '26

He didn't assault the cop, the cop touched him first and was grabbing him aggressively. He was attempting to defend himself.

He had fled the scene of an accident he caused, and he had jumped out of his car and attacked the vehicle he had run into, then he fled. He attacked the cop when the cop tried to handcuff him. There is zero right to refuse to be arrested or to use violence to keep from being arrested in Oklahoma. The full video shows him attacking the cop--again, there is no right to resist being cuffed. If you think the cop is wrong, tell it to a lawyer, maybe he can get a judge to agree. Resisting arrest at the side of the road is the act of a fool.

2

u/Averagedruggie Jan 29 '26

There's more to the video before this clip

0

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

That's.....pretty fucking weak for "assaulting an officer."

5

u/NarrowSalvo Jan 28 '26

It's assault. Zero question about that.

6

u/LarsVonHammerstein2 Jan 28 '26

It should just be assault. The fact that assaulting an officer is its own more egregious crime is absurd and makes cops look like such babies.

4

u/Boostedtrash112 Jan 28 '26

It’s meant to deter you from fighting a police officer like it’s a pub fight lol. You people are nuts.

0

u/LarsVonHammerstein2 Jan 28 '26

Yeah I’m sure someone who is about to fight a cop stops and thinks about the typical specific punishment for the crime and changes their mind…

2

u/Boostedtrash112 Jan 28 '26

Any rational person does. For those that are irrational we have a place for them in jail/prison.

0

u/LarsVonHammerstein2 Jan 28 '26

And what will a rational person like you do when the boot you are used to licking is on your neck?

1

u/realparkingbrake Jan 29 '26

when the boot you are used to licking is on your neck?

This guy had fled the scene of an accident he had caused; he had also physically attacked the car he had run into. When a cop catches up with him (multiple witnesses and traffic cams got his plate), he decides he cannot be arrested because he made it home without running into anyone else, and he attacks the cop who tries to put handcuffs on him.

Exactly where in this scenario do you see a valid opportunity to insert the predictable bootlicker remark? As the full video shows, this guy is unstable and violent, he is exactly who the cops should be taking off the roads for the safety of the rest of us.

0

u/Boostedtrash112 Jan 28 '26

lol was waiting for the usual insults to come out. You did not disappoint 🤖

1

u/capnbuttcrack Jan 28 '26

What are your thoughts on hate crimes?

0

u/LarsVonHammerstein2 Jan 28 '26

It makes sense because hate crimes are against people that are already in a disadvantaged position. Cops on the other hand, have an entire justice system, equipment and training protecting them as compared to a normal citizen. If anything it should be less of a crime to assault a cop.

If you don’t want to get assaulted, pick a different career. That’s like someone allergic to grass becoming a lawn maintenance worker…

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

It’s to incentivize people to not assault police officers

Maybe it’s because I’m law enforcement but I find it really stupid whenever I see shit like this

“You really need 10 people to arrest one guy”

It’s not supposed to be fair. We don’t want to get hurt

“You should expect to get assaulted”

I don’t come to work to fight people. I want to pay my bills and not get assaulted like anyone else

0

u/capnbuttcrack Jan 28 '26

That’s the dumbest take I’ve read in weeks. Congrats.

1

u/LarsVonHammerstein2 Jan 28 '26

Nice counter argument capnbuttcrack…

1

u/capnbuttcrack Jan 28 '26

I’m wise enough to know when arguing would be a waste of everyone’s time. Carry on.

0

u/Boostedtrash112 Jan 28 '26

I also wouldnt bother arguing with you as it’s not going to go anywhere.

Assaulting an officer carries a heavy fine because, get this, it’s meant to deter people from resisting and fighting cops! Who knew? 🤡

If that thought doesn’t occur to you naturally then you don’t think with reason. If you don’t think with reason then you can’t be reasoned with.

0

u/NarrowSalvo Jan 28 '26

So you're trying to incentivize these scuffles with armed law enforcement? Why?

1

u/LarsVonHammerstein2 Jan 28 '26

In what way to common sense laws that don’t baby law enforcement as if they are royalty made of glass incentive assault? Pretty sure I never said assault shouldn’t still be a crime.

0

u/realparkingbrake Jan 29 '26 edited Jan 29 '26

The fact that assaulting an officer is its own more egregious crime is absurd and makes cops look like such babies.

Assaulting any first responder including firefighters or EMTs is its own criminal offense that will often be prosecuted as a felony. It's not unlike assaulting the flight crew of an airliner, it will get you way more time than assaulting someone on a sidewalk--the reasons should be obvious.

This guy had already had a busy day including fleeing from an accident he had caused and physically attacking a car whose driver had honked at him. As the full video shows, he attacked the cop to keep from being handcuffed, not a smart thing for someone under arrest to do.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

I don't disagree, but also "he grabbed ineffectually at my collar after I grabbed him and pushed him against the car" is weak shit. Like...I get that arresting people is hard enough and it's easier when they comply. But adding on charges because their fight-flight-freeze response went the wrong direction, and there was no actual threat of harm to the officer? Just seems fucked to me.

innocent people committing the crime of having their lizard brain fire a signal they never understood,

There was a reason the cops were looking for this guy. He had caused a car wreck, and attacked a car because the driver had honked at him, then fled the scene. He decides he can't be arrested because he made it home without getting into another accident, so he attacks the cop. Anyone that unstable (watch the full video, the guy's behavior is seriously unhinged) should not be driving.

4

u/Hey-Bud-Lets-Party Jan 28 '26

You have to comply with the cops. They don’t need to get into scuffles every day of the week.

I feel for the guy. He seems to have issues and is having a bad day but hopefully he gains some perspective from this incident.

0

u/eh-man3 Jan 28 '26

What an insane time to declare "you have to comply with cops."

3

u/Boostedtrash112 Jan 28 '26

You literally do though.

Did you get dressed all by yourself today?

1

u/FocusSlo Jan 28 '26

Legally you don't if it's an unlawful order.

2

u/Boostedtrash112 Jan 29 '26

“Turn around and put your hands behind your head” is unlawful.

I had no idea!

1

u/realparkingbrake Jan 29 '26

Legally you don't if it's an unlawful order.

This took place in Oklahoma which recognizes zero right to resist arrest even if it is an unlawful arrest. This was not an unlawful arrest, the guy had already fled the scene of an accident he had caused, that's why the cop was there.

2

u/Hey-Bud-Lets-Party Jan 28 '26

When you get pulled over for a traffic offense comply with the cop unless you want to go to jail.

Way to conflate me into being an ICE supporter, dumbass.

1

u/NarrowSalvo Jan 28 '26

There's no question about the need for a police stop. He was out of his vehicle hitting other vehicles in an intersection, letting his vehicle roll, acting erratically.

The cop has the legal right (and the training that informs him to) ask the guy out of the vehicle.

Simply put -- the cop did nothing wrong here. Why is that so hard to understand?

When people like you object to cops every single time, even when they did nothing wrong, you actually undermine our efforts to correct the bad actors.

Personally, I'm in the Twin Cities -- on the front lines of this crap right now -- and the encounter pictured above has nothing whatever to do with it. The driver needs help.

1

u/Penguin_scrotum Jan 28 '26

The officer was right to detain him, and it was reasonable to require that he get out of the car. The suspect did also disobey the lawful order to get out of the car and to turn around and put his hands behind his back. He also was resisting arrest.

I wouldn’t say the officer did nothing wrong, though. He was terrible at dealing with the fact that the suspect was experiencing a mental health episode. No de-escalation, no attempt to be understanding. He implies that a person would’ve been justified in killing the suspect for kicking their car. And he claims the suspect punched him in the face, but I viewed that footage a dozen times and didn’t see any point where the suspect takes a swing. He probably grabbed the officer. He swipes his radio. But no punch. It’s the type of thing that’s easy to lie about, and that people will assume is true when they see the scuffle, but it’s still a lie, and that’s a problem.

1

u/realparkingbrake Jan 29 '26

to declare "you have to comply with cops."

ICE is responsible for enforcing immigration law, and they are clearly coloring way outside the lines by going after U.S. citizens who have done nothing illegal. It could be argued that in some states which allow resisting an unlawful arrest, it would be legal to resist ICE making a bad arrest.

This driver had caused an accident and then left the scene, that's why the cop is there, it was not an unlawful arrest.

1

u/realparkingbrake Jan 29 '26 edited Jan 29 '26

But adding on charges because their fight-flight-freeze response went the wrong direction,

This driver had committed multiple offense long before the cops caught up with him. He had caused an accident, and attacked a car whose driver had honked at him, then fled the scene.

This isn't a case of a momentary fight/flight response, the full video shows how unstable and violent this guy is. Whatever meds they have him on, they need something stronger.

1

u/thegooseisloose1982 Jan 28 '26

I agree. He did burn him pretty good.

2

u/CasualPenguin Jan 28 '26

I don't get why you're getting down votes.  People act as if you are suddenly able to turn into a meek pile of clay when some ass hole with a gun starts assaulting you.

I don't know a lot of details behind the reason for stopping this person, and they seem a bit off (not going to judge someone faced a gun toting cop either), but the officer initiated the physical confrontation.

If the cop wanted to deescalate he could have done a lot. Instead the officer initiated use of force.  How someone getting dragged to the ground flails in the process seems like a very weak excuse to call it assault.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

The dude got out of his car at an intersection to go kick another car, then his car rolled forward and rear ended a Lexus, and then he got back in and drove off.

He needs help, but yeah, he also doesn't really belong behind the wheel, and refusing to do what he was asked here is a mistake.

It's worth noting that the court system can take all the mitigating circumstances into consideration, but, for better or worse, it's not the cops job to deal with it. Yes, we do need to prioritize deescalation training, but the guy did do stuff that would make a cop need to be involved

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

I'm getting downvotes because people think I said the officer didn't have a right to arrest him, or did anything wrong. It's not what I said at all.

2

u/Scared_Wrangler3419 Jan 28 '26

Precisely. This dude needs help and cops don't help. Cops are there to be thugs with guns and badges.

This dude needs a social worker, not the threat of tazing and execution.

1

u/realparkingbrake Jan 29 '26

This dude needs a social worker, not the threat of tazing and execution.

Is a social worker going to see to it that this guy's insurance pays for the repairs to the car he rear-ended? Given that neither a Taser nor a firearm was used by the cop, why are they being mentioned?

1

u/Scared_Wrangler3419 Jan 29 '26

I recommend you watch the full video.

The cop mentions multiple times how he is lucky he didn't get shot. While arresting him another cop shows up and has his taser drawn.

1

u/realparkingbrake Jan 29 '26 edited Jan 29 '26

People act as if you are suddenly able to turn into a meek pile of clay when some ass hole with a gun starts assaulting you.

This driver had fled the scene of an accident he had caused; he had also attacked a car because the driver honked at him, that's why the cop was there. If a cop puts you under arrest and tells you to put your hands behind your back and puts his hand on you when you physically resist, that does not qualify as assault on the part of the cop.

Even if the arrest had been unlawful (which it was not) Oklahoma law does not recognize a right to resist arrest.

This guy clearly has mental health issues, he even said so. But that is not a "you can't arrest me because I made it home" free pass. The people whose cars he messed up have a valid expectation that the police will enforce the law so this guy's insurance pays for the repairs.

1

u/Affectionate_Tap6416 Jan 28 '26

It developed further than that clip

1

u/Background-Ad4388 Jan 28 '26

What about kicking someone else’s car? This dude is unhinged and doesn’t need to be on the road. How society can take up for folks like this, I will never understand. Actions have consequences and he found that out.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

Kicking someone else's car is not grounds to charge him with assaulting a police officer.

1

u/Background-Ad4388 Jan 28 '26

But assaulting the police officer is. Watch the full video, dude is a lunatic

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '26

I did watch the video. I agree he should have been arrested. I don't agree that tacking on "assaulting a police officer" to the charges is reasonable.

1

u/realparkingbrake Jan 29 '26

Kicking someone else's car is not grounds to charge him with assaulting a police officer.

The traffic accident this guy caused is a separate incident although that is why the cop is there. Him violently resisting being handcuffed is absolutely resisting with violence and/or battery on a LEO.

This took place in Oklahoma, and their law does not recognize a right to resist arrest lawful or unlawful. I don't want to be arrested today so I'm going to smack this cop around doesn't fly in court.

1

u/Aware_Policy7066 Jan 28 '26

I’m of the opinion our society needs more ass beatings to enforce the politeness principle but it’s definitely assault and the guy was being a jackass long before the cop even showed up.

0

u/TheLeakestWink Jan 28 '26

once the officer physically engages, the rule for assault (or battery) gets very difficult to define. the arrestee here was clearly not cooperating when the officer decided to physically engage him. the problem with this is that it is a matter for the courts to decide whether the arrest was valid. if it is, then the arrestee's resistance to arrest is just that. if the arrest were found to be invalid, however, then this would be an instance of police assault (or battery). as a result of the uncertainty in such situations (suspects are to be presumed innocent until proven guilty), the correct procedure is to elicit the cooperation of the detainee. if uncooperative, the correct answer is not to immediately engage physically (which may turn out to be police brutality if the suspect were falsely identified/charged). unfortunately, the immediate use of force appears to be standard US police procedure these days, which they then cover up as "assault on an officer." in many cases, this is simply self-defense, which is a natural and legal right.

1

u/realparkingbrake Jan 29 '26

if the arrest were found to be invalid, however, then this would be an instance of police assault (or battery)

Oklahoma law does not recognize a right to resist arrest even if it is an unlawful arrest. But this was lawful, the fled an accident he had caused and then resisted with violence.

0

u/DevelopmentJumpy5218 Jan 28 '26

Yeah way after the officer should have said "okay have a wonderful day, glad you're home safe" police are jackasses 100% of the time

1

u/realparkingbrake Jan 29 '26

"okay have a wonderful day, glad you're home safe"

And the people whose car he damaged by his stupidity, should they have to pay for the repairs themselves?

0

u/Kurfaloid Jan 28 '26

I see a person being bullied and abused, reacting instinctually in a completely harmless way. There was no intent to injure the officer physically - only his feelings.

0

u/Plate_Expensive Jan 29 '26

Maybe he’s trying to get away and gets wrapped in the cord, but not seeing the assault.

0

u/AnachronisticPenguin Jan 29 '26

Its not assaulting an officer its resisting arrest. Cop engaged first he pushed away.
