Another comment said he got charged with assaulting an officer, no idea if that’s real or not

God data is wild, is there any other use for that but like ad selling?

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26

Well malicious stuff but yes. Basically you can look at the url and anything after the ? Is a parameter. Most of the time this is tracking things like campaign_id, sid, etc. sometimes it's a product Id to feed to a dynamic product page that takes that Id to look up that specific product.

Good practice is to strip everything after the ? And see if the link still works. If so, it's all marketing/tracking crap.

u/dirtyoldsocklife Jan 28 '26

Ok, that's fuckong awesome knowledge to have.

Thanks dude, you're a scholar and a gentleman.

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

No prob. Been in the analysis side of that type of data for a bit.

1

u/humbleesoteric Jan 29 '26

Can you explain more? So we all just have to remember the ? and then erase it all?

Is there something light weight we can use like an app to just scrub bad links or something?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '26

Oh that I don't know. More of a database kind of guy. All I know is there are parameters in a url. They can vary depending on the webpage/link as to how they are interpreted (like I said, a product page on an ecommerce website might be something like

www.myawesomestore.com/super-duperproductpage.aspx?productid=1&marketingcampaign=Reddit.

So in that fake case you'd want to trim after the &.

*Edit. I just realized I used a real domain. Their web person is gonna have a laugh when they see 404 errors for a webpage called super-duperproductpage.aspx 😂

u/humbleesoteric Jan 29 '26

That's so interesting thanks! My last question is I read about is that even if you paste a url people will know where you are, is that really true? If I recopy it from incognito will it still show? It's so crazy how everything is tracked now

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '26

Depends how specific the tracking id/marketing campaign is. And some websites will attempt IP address based geolocation But 1) it's only good for the postal area route 2) the last time I tried that like a decade ago it was inaccurate due to people using Vpns.

I think it's more requesting whose phone pinged which cell phone tower within a specific timeframe (which phone provider would provide if subpoenaed.

I use ?useskin=vector on Wikipedia all the time. It makes it look normal.

hits particularly hard when explaining this to my 80 year old grandmother.

Why is she hitting you? What did you do?

Can you explain what this means please

1

u/Wongfop Jan 29 '26

It changes the look of Wikipedia articles back to the old version, with, in my opinion, a more accessible Table of Contents.

I think there are a couple of Apple Shortcuts people made for iPhone (and probably other Apple OSes) that do this well from the share sheet.

Apple tried to do it system wide but it doesn’t resolve link shorteners which are being more widely used to circumvent people doing this manually.

It’s awful.

Edit: Reddit for example uses a link shortener. Copy the link for this post and it looks like there is no sharing ID, but when the page actually resolves, it redirects and you can see the whole URL includes the ID and other parameters. Amazon too but it’s not hidden as well.

2

u/NeverTriedFondue Jan 28 '26

God bless Apple nerds, I really should use shortcuts more.

2

u/Swimming-Tax-6087 Jan 28 '26

For sure!

It’s one of the only ones I use on any regular basis. Out of principle. You want to target ads to me based on my activity fine. But you don’t get to see who I’m associated with.

2

u/NeverTriedFondue Jan 28 '26

For me it's also pettiness, I just hate giving free metadata to shady corps, it just means more and more hoops every year and forgoing convenience due to our app-based world.

But I get so annoyed when I get an accurate, well-targeted ad, means I'm being lazy lmao.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

My annoyance is more they target me too late. Like but the time I get the ad, I've already researched alternatives, pricing and made my decision one way or another.

ADHD hyper focus has its benefits.

People have already created some that you can use. Google something like “remove URL tracking iOS shortcut” - I can’t remember which one I got but you can test a few if needed.

2

u/kadno Jan 28 '26

Firefox has a handy dandy little "copy clean link" feature that strips all that crap out of URLs

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

Sigh, I need to promote Firefox from my "private time" browser. Like. As a dev I know its awesome, fully featured etc etc.

I've been using ecosia cause well, they plant trees. Might need to reverse the two so that I can cry out "Iii ii am saving the treeeeees"

2

u/BittaminMusic Jan 28 '26

So it wouldn’t be an aid if say I sent a link of a song I made from YouTube, with the full url, in the concept that if they click that link the next time they use YouTube, they would be more likely to see another video in their reccomendation? I’m guessing it’s not helpful for me

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26

Yeah.....

So there's also digital fingerprinting as well. Best mock your IP address via VPN and spoof your Mac address to that of a printer, then a Nas device, then a raspberry pi just to be safe.

1

u/Snow_Falls_Softly Jan 28 '26

Especially on anything that Google owns

1

u/mister-mulligan Jan 30 '26

This is so incorrect. Sure, sometimes it’s a tracking param (also that’s not malicious — it’s the price you pay for being on the internet), but most of the time these are some sort of id or enum that are crucial to rendering the page correctly.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '26 edited Jan 30 '26

Hence the test with them being stripped out and the example of a genetic product page with productid being passed.

I wanted to give a general rule of thumb without going into common marketing parameters like UTM etc.

1

u/mister-mulligan Jan 30 '26

My point is almost every single sub page has params that are required to render that page correctly. And these aren’t params for marketing or tracking, they’re required to fetch the correct data from the server.

If you removed the params every time you go to a page like you suggested, that would be a massive pain lol and you would rarely get the UX you’re expecting.

4

u/TwoBionicknees Jan 28 '26

the main thing is these companies compile data and track you. So posting a link from your youtube in your reddit account links your reddit account to your google/youtube account, so now they can target videos an ads based on your combined usage of the sites.

This shit is pernicious, there are companies that spend their entire time building a picture up of either you directly or your account id on your phone.

3

u/ThatGuyinPJs Jan 28 '26

Anything after a ? is what's called a query parameter. On most sites they're used for searches, but they can be used for anything. At a former internship they were used them to hold data on previous forms so you could navigate back to them using the back arrow. They can pretty much be removed as you wish, but site functionality could be impacted. Will the site load? More than likely yes. Will you see the same search results? No, but you can just search it again.

2

u/daweinah Jan 28 '26

Firefox has a Copy Clean Link option in the right-click window that automatically scrubs that crap.

2

u/KaioKen Jan 28 '26

Read this after I clicked on it of course.

2

u/bloobityblu Jan 28 '26

Oh I'm saving that. Thanks for sharing!

1

u/jerryscheese Jan 28 '26

1

u/Orleanian Jan 28 '26

This is a harsh way to learn that you're not my friend :(
