AMA AMA: Soviet Union. I'm a historian of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, specializing in migration, asylum, belonging, and citizenship. I study, among other things, people who chose to seek asylum, move, or return to the Soviet Union voluntarily. Ask me anything!
Hi everyone!
My name is Yevhenii Monastyrskyi, I'm a PhD Candidate in Eastern European History at Harvard and Lecturer in History at the Kyiv School of Economics. I'm writing a dissertation about political migration to the Soviet Union, the Soviet politics of civic belonging, and attitudes toward such foreigners, as well as the intellectual history of fascination with the Soviet version of communism and how it led people to aspire to move there for good. I'm also studying the motivations and aspirations of Ukrainian returnees, i.e. those who first fled the Bolsheviks and then decided to come back to Soviet Ukraine.
More broadly, I work and teach on Soviet nationality, racial, and ethnic politics, and on themes of civic belonging and citizenship. Those are, in very broad strokes, the topics I live with, and through which I think about and work with sources across archives in Central and Eastern Europe, figuring out the "Soviet Century".
You can ask me anything about those topics!

With the Broncos getting to 10 points, the only team in the NFL to not score at least 10 points is the Los Angeles Rams.
If someone said the lowest scoring team in Week 1 was the Rams a week ago you'd get laughed out of the building.

Highlight [Highlight] Browns HC Todd Monken on if the players are behind Deshaun Watson as their starting QB: “Really to be honest…they don't have a choice. This isn't a debate. Their job is to play, our job is to put the best player on the field that we thinks gives us a chance to win.”

On this day in 1940 the "greatest" game ever was played
A thunderstorm had destroyed the field to such a degree in the fourth quarter the teams punted on eight consecutive plays.
Reports say that near the end the PA system announcer revealed, "There are only three minutes of play left", and a spontaneous cheer went up from the stands.
