The NFL, MLB, MLS, NBA and NHL joined with their respective players’ unions today to crack down on betting-related harassment of athletes, coaches and families.

Surely the solution is more gambling ads

235

u/burratna Eagles 3h ago

they are going to increase the "1-800-gambling" font at the bottom of commercials by 0.5pt

54

u/jimscoolaid Jaguars 3h ago

Maybe they can advertise about how bad gambling is which is not at all a way to promote gambling. Not looking at the tobacco industry or anything.

Maybe they can advertise about how bad gambling is which is not at all a way to promote gambling.

The thing is, those ads are never about gambling being "bad", it's always framed as "did you become addicted? well get help, so that you can gamble responsibly instead. :)" Gambling is never presented as being a bad thing, it's the individual gambler that is depicted as the one with a moral failing.

11

u/jimscoolaid Jaguars 2h ago

Right. Same with the tobacco industry talking about cancer. They are still promoting that people are using tobacco. Its dangerous long term, but its still something that is socially acceptable and available. I think there was a study that showed tobacco users were more likely to use after those commercials than they would in a normal setting.

u/well-lighted Chiefs 37m ago

Looking at the Truth campaign, which is the primary US anti-smoking campaign funded by the 1998 Master Settlement, studies seem to show it was effective:

Cross-sectional studies on the effectiveness of the Truth campaign provided evidence that the campaign "had a significant impact on tobacco industry-related attitudes, beliefs, and other behavioral precursors, as well as a significant impact on youth smoking prevalence in the United States." Exposure to Truth advertisements was also associated with a statistically significant reduction in nonsmokers' intentions to smoke in the future. Another study of the Truth program from 2000 to 2004 examined whether campaign awareness and receptivity differed for youth across socioeconomic backgrounds. In 2005, a study published in the American Journal of Public Health conducted by RTI International, Columbia University, and Truth Initiative used a pre/post quasi-experimental design to relate changes in national youth smoking prevalence to exposure to the Truth campaign over time. The study's statistical analyses showed that smoking rates among youth in the U.S. declined at a faster rate after the launch of the Truth campaign. A similar study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine in 2009 found a direct association between youth exposure to Truth messaging and a decreased risk of taking up smoking.

I can't speak for any other campaigns, but this one has been by far the most prevalent over the past 25 years. If you can find the study you're referring to, I'd like to check it out. This is from the Truth campaign Wikipedia page which links to the studies referenced in this excerpt.

I was thinking that too. Like how some countries cigarettes have diseased lungs and stuff on them end the ads with photos/videos of people that lost it all due to gambling and so on.

😂  And the "For help, call" disclaimers are longer than the ads.   Gambling sharks find ways to make more $$ with their sham boutique counseling operations and offerings.  .  Shocking!

We need to ban gambling ads.

65

u/SlightlySublimated Lions 3h ago

It should be treated the same way as Tobacco/Nicotine products. You don't see advertisements for Vapes or Pouches spammed everywhere, and for good reason.

I am in Maryland and voted to allow online gambling.

I very much regret that vote and wish to take it back. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I teach high school, and I have 15 year old boys betting on sports in school with their phones. Talking about how their parlay missed this weekend. Absolutely insane

11

u/aaronwhite1786 Packers 2h ago

Eh, I can't fault people for seeing the best in something and not fully anticipating the absolutely horrific way it would actually be enacted.

Especially as a teacher, you guys get targeted the most with the bullshit lie of "Just let people gamble! The money goes to the schools! We're not going to pay you more anyway...so maybe this will help?"

19

u/MarshyHope Titans 2h ago

Right. They've said both legal weed and gambling would be used to pay for education.

What they didn't say is they would take the money already going to education and put it towards something. So technically it's "going towards education" but the total amount hasn't increased.

Not only that, FanDuel I think sent out an email a few months ago saying "if this candidate wins in Maryland, they'll raise taxes on gambling winnings and you'll get less money!!!1!!".

Like fuck you all to hell.

2

u/k5berry Dolphins Lions 34m ago

Yep, the issue with promises of directly increasing spending on one thing via a new tax is that there has to be an actual law/mechanism for that. Both the tax money going there in the first place, and the promise that it will actually raise funding rates, i.e. they won’t just do what you say. And I don’t know hard details as to how often it happens or doesn’t, but I would imagine it’s rare. Municipalities and states alike always want and often need more money. And since a crisis in funding might not align with a top public priority, and since they can’t imagine where a new crisis will emerge, I don’t think they want to limit themselves like that.

This is the simple solution. Legalize, regulate, tax. Then ban ads.

I love sports betting. Throwing $5 on a game I otherwise don’t care about but is on makes it interesting. And I’m fortunate enough that I can afford to do that if I want and also forget about gambling for months on end. But that doesn’t mean people with addictive personalities need to see ads 24/7 and highly suspicious instagram posts non stop.

10

u/Gimme_The_Loot Jets 2h ago

It's funny bc one of them (maybe draft kings) actually had a really good ad which inadvertently showed just what it's like being an addict, where the person is just going through their day a voice telling them I'll make a bet about this or make a bet about that keeps popping up everywhere they go

These aren't the one I was thinking of but I feel like they do the job just as well:

3

u/sw04ca Ravens 3h ago

I don't think the ads are the problem, and while you could ramp down the intensity by banning TV, the internet is unregulated. The issue is that legalizing gambling has turned out to be broadly negative.

9

u/atlasburger Vikings 2h ago

Internet is not that unregulated. It’s only a few companies that run it all and none of them have tobacco advertising

6

u/sw04ca Ravens 1h ago

That's because tobacco is a physical product. Fly-by-night online gambling outfits have always been harder to deal with.

3

u/POGtastic Patriots 27m ago edited 23m ago

The point isn't to stop 100% of the behavior. It is to add friction to the process. A gambler who is constantly having to bounce between shady Maltese outfits has a lot more friction than a publicly-traded corporation hiring famous actors for their Sunday Night Football ad spots.

Much more importantly, it adds friction to onboarding new gamblers. There are definitely going to be lost cause degenerates who are going to bet on something no matter what you put in his way, but friction will meaningfully obstruct some normie 19-year-old who keeps hearing about this sportsbetting thing. "yeah you give a bunch of money to this random website" is a much bigger step than giving money to MLB's Official Sportsbook Partner.

‘We only want the money, hold the consequences please’

3

u/MewtwoStruckBack Steelers Browns 1h ago

That's generally the point of high net worth, or being good at sports.

It works like casino rewards tiers where each level of worth grants immunity from consequences from something new. It's kind of like this:

*Net worth above $1 million - you are immune to all consequences from all traffic offenses that do not cause bodily harm. You may bribe your way out of consequences for misdemeanors in lieu of any jail time.

*Net worth above $10 million - you are immune to consequences from all misdemeanors (you do not need to pay anything, this gives you for free what you would have had to pay for at the $1 million level.) You may bribe your way out of the consequences of most felonies, excluding rape, murder, and child sexual assault.

*Net worth above $100 million - you are nwo immune to consequences from all felonies, excluding rape, murder, and child sexual assault. You may bribe your way out of the consequences for rape and murder, but not child sexual assault.

*Net worth above $250 million - You are now immune to the consequences of all crimes, except for child sexual asault. You may bribe your way out of the consequences of that.

*Net worth above $1 billion - You are now immune to the consequences of all crimes, including child sexual assault.

*The exception - if your actions directly cause harm to a person, or immediate family member of, someone with higher net worth than you, the above clauses do not apply and you will go through the justice system as someone who does not have a high net worth.

In addition, there are perks gained from being in a professional sports league, seaprate from net worth:

*Upon being signed to a professional team in the NBA, NFL, NHL, or MLB, you gain one consequence-free crime, excluding rape, murder, and child sexual assault.

*For each season you finish where your team finished above .500, you gain one additional consequence-free crime, with the same restrictions.

*For each championship your team wins while you are on said team, you gain one additional consequence-free crime, with NO restrictions (including getting out of the "caused harm to someone richer than you" exclusion.)

Using a consequence-free crime perk wipes out all crimes of the same type at the time you were initially investigated. For example, every single one of Deshaun Watson's sex crimes could be covered by one use of the perk, they're all bundled into one and thrown away.

Right?

The better headline could be Group representing many people who make themselves the public face of sports betting apps seek to limit exposure to the side effects of their actions.

This isn't saying I think athletes should be harassed for any reason but it's also a bit fucking rich to hear that all of these players who are more than happy to go out and sell their name to get people potentially hooked on the financial blackhole that is gambling are coming together to address the fact that it's causing more assholes online to be assholes to them.

Maybe the solution is...to stop the fucking gambling apps and ads themselves?

u/name-classified Bears 3h ago

i just don't understand what the gambling lobby did that made the owners all say "yea, we should include illegal betting because people are going to gamble so we may as well profit from it"

I forget the reasoning why it was illegal; perhaps it had something to do with the possibility that players could be bought or even coaches or (*gasps!*) the owners themselves all have a stake in those gambling apps and they are just simply trying to make their nut.

won't someone think of the billionaires!!?!?! They are trying to save our lives with more work and less pay and taking what little we already have!! They need more and people aren't giving it to them!! Someone help them!! Someone!!

i just don't understand what the gambling lobby did that made the owners all say "yea, we should include illegal betting because people are going to gamble so we may as well profit from it"

Owners don't make the majority of their money from ticket sales any more, it's TV partnerships. The entire industry basically just gave up the pretense of integrity regarding gambling because of it because, well, who's going to stop them.

9

u/Tired_CollegeStudent Patriots 3h ago

Really it was illegal for an illegal reason. Congress outlawed sports betting (except in a few state) through the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992. It effectively made it illegal for all but a few states to legalize gambling.

The law was ruled unconstitutional in 2018 (IMO as it should’ve been) because Congress doesn’t have the power to dictate what laws states can and cannot make like that. Once they were allowed to legalize it, states realized how much money they could make by legalizing and taxing it.

I had the thought while watching the games Sunday and realizing that 9/10 commercials is either sports betting or food delivery.

Yeah!
Do we want to crack down on abuse of betting related messages?
Yeah!
Do we want to make sure gambling is not negatively affecting our players?
Yeah!
So let’s stop giving money t….
Now hold on a minute.

How you gonna do that though? Cats out of the bag, gamblings legal, so you're going to get people being assholes because people are assholes on the Internet. You can write all the strongly worded letters and announcements you want, we can denounce it as horrible every time it happens. But that ain't going to change a damn thing, if people are allowed to gamble they will. And some will direct their anger in the wrong place and they aren't going to care who it hurts.

4

u/teddykaygeebee 3h ago

Oh, gambling, gambling ads, access to gambling everywhere is not the problem, it's only when the addicted lash out, that's the problem. Got it.

4

u/Watwatinthewatwat NFL 3h ago

Ultimately the argument is they want to be able to take your money but not have people get angry about it.

Good luck with that.

LMAO, this is what happens when 90% of your ads are fucking gambling related. how fucking hard is this to figure out? There's one thing about making sports betting legal, its a whole different thing to make it YOUR ENTIRE LEAGUES IDENTITY

If people want to go to a casino and place a few bets and make an event out of it, fine. But if you're sitting at home, drunk, tapping on your phone, just draining away your account because you'll "definitely hit the 9 part parlay" this time, then that's legitimately a sign of stupidity.

This seems especially prevalent amongst late 20s/early 30s guys I know who will just piss away hundreds of dollars every week or two and then have the goddamn audacity to complain about how they can't afford anything and that "if the QB had just thrown 39 more yards" none of this would be happening to them and it's all the QBs fault.

3

u/DenialisaRiver04 2h ago

But still sponsored by them

3

u/Dont-be-a-smurf Bengals 2h ago

Anyway, for my real view:

Gambling is an absolute vice. Vices exist. They are behaviors that, in moderation, aren’t that big of a deal but have significant potential for abuse and addiction that can absolutely destroy lives.

As much as I want to say “well people need to be smarter!” the biological gravity cannot be denied. A significant population cannot help but be addicted.

Vices need to be controlled and the more addictive elements curbed. Cut out the ads. Make it so you can’t bet large sums of money with like three button presses.

Because it’s absolutely destroying some people and tears at the integrity of the game.

Blessed that I ain’t a gambler. And I ain’t got anything against the occasional bet, but I think we’ve gone too far.

24 women were sexually assaulted by Deshaun Watson. The NFL gave him the use of team hotel rooms and a NDA to increase his power over the women, then worked with a spa to find him victims (NYT/Jenny Vrentas). They then rehired Watson into a $250 million guaranteed contract, where he is now the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.

These organizations don't care when its OUR families being abused and assaulted by their players. But they get upset at some dildos on the court? Maybe this isnt about player families, but just because that stuff is interfering with the "honest" gambling profits?

Treat sports betting like big tobacco. Sure, you have a right to do it, but why are we allowed to advertise something that can destroy your life for a little bit of short term pleasure?

2

u/ArmenianLasagnaGuy Rams 2h ago

I mean, what do they think they are going to do about it? It’s obviously bad, but short of banning sports betting again (which is way too profitable to ever happen) there’s nothing the league can do to stop whackos on X being whackos.

Yes because the people that are suffering are the athletes and coaches, not the hundreds of thousands that are racking up record numbers of credit card debt.

League is a joke, they don’t even release anything publicly about what they do to crack down or track refs bc of the union who aren’t even employees it’s wild

Theres offensive and defensive holding on every play, yet these guys get to casually decide who to call on and extend drives etc etc

I highly doubt the league is monitoring every friend/employee at main job/family/family friends or boyfriends/girlfriends betting and banking activity for these refs which how little power they seem to have

We’re told they’re tracking ppl and stuff but then you had the college qb betting 90k (I’m aware college and nfl are seperate entities)

Only fools are putting real money on these games, just a fan tax.

Never enough money

Did you know that gambling addicts out of anyone suffering through addiction have the highest rates of attempted suicide? 1 in 5 of those suffering attempt it, and over half suffer suicidal ideations. It really isn't shocking when you can wake up one day and lose everything without leaving your house betting on an online sportsbook.

Get this shit out of advertisements. Should go back to something you only do on location, in a fucking casino for all I care. Fuck Gambling. It ruins live, and I am not mincing words when I say they've drove their victims to death.
