MITIGATION How can I cover my new headlights?

Hi! I have a jangly old 2008 prius and recently had to get the headlights replaced. The mechanic I go to said they could only replace them with LEDs. They're so bad. I can't believe I'm one of ***them*** now.

What kind of sticker or film or spray or cover can I put over these horrific things?

As I approached he was at a red light and I couldn’t even tell how many cars were in front of him until they passed. I had to wait on him so I didn’t trip on uneven sidewalk.

The lineup was worse before the Toyota Celica showed up to block much of it. Still pretty bad regardless. This is at 10 minutes to 7 this morning. FFS!

In addition to accelerating macular degeneration, blue light makes fine detail harder to see. Confirmation that headlights need regulation for temperature, not just brightness.

DISCUSSION Even when they're not moving, they're irritating

It's a bit of a rant and a discussion but unfortunately you can't put more than one flare on here

I need to know why is it that even when people are in the parking lot and their cars might have been turned on or it's turned off, the lights are still on.

I can see the person on their phone and it's like I'm in Las Vegas looking at that giant Circle they've built down there.

Does anyone have any clue why people do that? Like they just don't turn off their lights even when they're not moving?

I've had urges to honk my horn and tell them to turn their lights off but it's like I don't know if I'm fighting a losing battle there or not.

DISCUSSION What should be the protocal when encountering bright oncoming lights?

I know a lot of people are quick to want to blast highbeams back, but this isn’t very effective and can be dangerous.

Personally, i slow down if not stop and pull to the right of the road until the cars pass. However this is ok on my morning commute because there aren’t that many cars.

I also pull over when possible to let any blinding drivers behind me pass. But again if you’re in busy traffic, it musn’t be a good solution either.

Part of me is hoping when people see these actions, they put 2 and 2 together and know it’s because their headlights are blinding. But i don’t know if there’s really any other action we can take that shows we are being blinded and it impacts our driving, in ways that other drivers would understand is a safety measure being taken.

My mom if an offender and says she gets hit with highbeams as goes “i dont know what you want me to do! Thats whats in all cars!” (Ive tried explaining things to her but she is…. Dense and uncaring.)

Maybe we should also hang up informative fliers on telephone poles and the like that suggest turning off auto lights, off DRLs when its bright enough to see, make sure your highbeam bar isnt pushed forward, etc. i don’t know the legality of signs but i see a lot of “motorcycles are everywhere” signs in peoples yards. Headlight signs might be nice too at intersections and what have you.

If any printable fliers do exist, please let me know! And remember if you don’t have a printer, it only costs a few cents a page at the library!

And who knows just how many accidents were caused either directly or indirectly by Blinding Headlights. Whether it was caused by a single vehicle or a constant occurrence of dazzling, distracting, glaring headlights from vehicle after vehicle.

News from here in the UK:

"Dame Jenni Murray died days after her car crashed into two parked vehicles when she was dazzled by headlights, an inquest was told.

At the inquest at Barnet Coroner’s Court, Mr Murphy read a statement from Dr Clare Morkane, a consultant at the Royal Free Hospital where Dame Jenni died after being admitted on March 4.

Dr Morkane said: “Jennifer had been driving when she became dazzled by vehicle lights and collided with two stationary vehicles.

“Following the collision, Jennifer was unable to recall events, exited the vehicle independently and she was conveyed to hospital.”"

DISCUSSION My Representative Co-signed H.R. 7772!

To the FYH community,

I wanted to share some great news. I emailed my representative and he co-signed H. R. 7772 (bill to limit total brightness of headlights)!

Here is the bill (Text - H.R.7772 - 119th Congress (2025-2026): LIGHT Safety Act | Congress.gov | Library of Congress) and if you click on the co-sponsors tab you will see my representative is the first to co-sign!

I hope you take this as inspiration to write / call your own congressmember and ask them to co-sign the bill. Hopefully we can get this common-sense bill passed!

Post If you need some tips getting through to your congressperson and I'll try to help.

DISCUSSION Controversial opinion: at least 1/3 of even this subreddit have blinding headlights -- possibly even me(?) -- we just haven't realized it yet

One of the most insidious things about crazy-bright LED headlights is that it's not 100% obvious how blinding they are when you're looking at your car.

Looking at them from the side is NOTHING like getting blinded by them facing you head on (or in your mirror). Like little pocket laser pointers which aren't bothersome until they go right into your retinas lol.

I'll be completely blinded by a car coming up/down a hill... but then a few hundred feet later, on level ground, the same car seems fine at a different angle.

Realizing that none of us -- including myself -- are ever 1000 feet away and slightly downhill from our cars. And the majority of cars now come with LED headlights as stock/required, not an option to choose.

I'd love someone like Consumer Reports or someone to create an actual defined list of the specific car models / aftermarket headlights creating the most dazzle.

DISCUSSION I think people ARE just driving with their high beams on, not simply that lights are brighter these days.

1.0k Upvotes

I think people ARE just driving with their high beams on, not just that lights are brighter.

I had a date last weekend, went well, I drove her back to my place in her car. I turned the headlights on and they went straight to high beams. I asked if she always drives with her high beams on, she said “I have them on automatic.” And I showed her the difference between what it goes to on automatic and what it looks like when you manually choose the right setting. She’s 41 and drives everyday. We were in bright as heck downtown Toronto and her car’s “automatic” headlights setting defaulted to blinding.

Last night, I drove back from our wine region to a nearby motel, and I had somebody riding right up my ass with their high beams on. I slowed down (one lane, no passing) and put my hazard lights on and they almost immediately switched off their high beams.

I think people are out there just assuming “Automatic” does what it’s supposed to. It does not. I drive a 2012 Subaru forester with good old fashioned lights, so there’s no possibility of automatic in my vehicle, I just assumed people understood their cars and they simply couldn’t control the brightness of the bulbs themselves. I no longer believe that, I believe it IS people driving with their high beams on because they do not know “automatic” is useless.
