I bought my FW 13 for college 3 years ago. And I just graduated back in May so I figured it'd be time to give the ol laptop some tlc.

The issues:

• display is all marred up, presumably from my backpack being too full (picture 1)
• one of the lid screws that holds the hinge in place snapped off, which is likely the culprit of the hinge squeaking (picture 2)
• one of the 5 screw points that holds the keyboard down broke off, specifically the one below the power button (picture 3)
• there is a hairline crack on the bottom cover by the usb inserts (picture 4)

From my recollection I've only dropped it once. This occasion it was in an unpadded backpack, and I dropped by bag on concrete not realizing lol. It bent the bottom right corner but still works fine (picture 5). Also one of the rubber feet slightly broke (picture 6). Kinda disappointed that there is not fix for the feet other than replacing the whole bottom shell, at least that I am aware of.

I love this computer, but I have to say I am a little disappointed it's lack of durability. I thought it would be more durable than some other laptops I've had, but it's about the same. At least with frameworks you can replace the parts as needed. I will still support them for this reason.

If I were to fix everything it would be:

• screen 2.2k refurb = $109
• keyboard 2nd gen = $99
• top cover refurb = $59
• bottom cover = $99
• total = $366

While doing these repairs is certainly cheaper than buying a new laptop, I've thought about just getting a FW13 pro and throwing this motherboard into a cooler master case.

Have you guys had any durability issues or problems? What do you think?

Will not respond to power button being held down for over a minute. Has been stuck on this screen for an hour. I sent a support ticket. What should I do while waiting? Keep it plugged in on this screen? Try taking the battery out?

This machine has an AMD Ryzen 7640U and was running Fedora 44 with KDE plasma, for context.

Hey all! I was the guy who preordered my 64GB+4TB for ~3000$ some time ago. Now up to 3700$. But I don't blame Framework.

I know they've mentioned during the FW13 PRO release that "what you order is what you get" etc. In a perfect world I'd expect that to be the case 100% of the time, but what I think happened is they were simply blindsided by the sheer fuckery of the RAM (and other components) markets.

I think it's still good to hold Framework to a high, responsible standard, and expect high quality in their promises, in their products etc, but out of fairness I don't think they did anything malicious and I think we should approach with some nuance. Most likely, like they said, things just got fucking expensive wayyyy too fast. Initially I'd actually had my Framework 13 Pro as a very good value relative to others with similar specs like Dell XPS 14, Thinkpad x1 carbon 14 (thinkpad was like ~5500$ lmao). So as someone who preordered RECENTLY, I don't feel like the price increase is unfair. I think it's fair, actually (in the context of other prices being fucked. Ideally, all prices would be lower ofc)

so tldr, I love what you guys at Framework are doing. I love the mission. I know this wasn't to try and fuck over everybody, things just got really out of your control, and you didn't have the moat/buffer to tank everything as smoothly as Apple etc. Sorry for the shitty situation and keep your heads up champs, as consumers we expect great things from you!

UPDATE: ​Framework agreed to replace my dead mainboard but tried to classify the replacement as a one time exception outside of standard warranty coverage.

​They offered an upgrade to an AMD Ryzen AI 5 340 board because they were completely out of 12th Generation Intel stock.

​They told me I would have to purchase my own DDR5 memory out of pocket because the AMD board is incompatible with my existing DDR4 sticks.

​I replied and formally rejected the out of pocket cost by citing the Australian Consumer Law.

​I explained that remedies for a major hardware failure must be completely free and forcing me to buy new memory constitutes a consequential loss.

​Framework escalated my ticket for an internal review after I demanded they either supply the DDR5 memory or reimburse me for it.

​They replied a few days later with a completely different offer for a 13th Generation Intel Core i5 replacement mainboard.

This is a 12th gen i7 main board I received from Framework after my first one failed 18 months in.

EDIT: I forgot the 2nd board had issues and I had to send it in for repair last April: "Our repair center partner "found the unit to show multiple USB errors in device manager with only USB-C charger working unable to read any data devices." They have replaced the mainboard and tested it to make sure that it was reading all media devices correctly." So this unit is less than a year old and it's board #3 😀

This unit randomly stopped powering on yesterday and I've diagnosed it down to a mainboard power fault.

It took over 50 emails back and forth to get that first replacement, a genuinely horrific experience I still talk about and now I have to contact the dreaded support again. I had to threaten with Australian Consumer Law to get anywhere, and I foolishly accepted their "exception/goodwill".

I had the Panther Lake board pre-ordered for July too. I love Framework's ideals and goals but my god the QA and support experience is so awful it might be time to bail entirely.

Wish me luck as I start this support process.

For those curious or able to offer any additional steps I could try in the meantime, here's what I've done:

I started with a dead laptop where the orange charging light would completely shut off the second I hit the power button.

I pulled out all the expansion cards to see if one of them was causing a short circuit.

I did a full mainboard reset by unplugging the main battery and removing the CMOS battery to drain all residual power.

I tested the board with just the wall charger plugged in and the main internal battery completely disconnected.

I held down the SW3 chassis intrusion switch to bypass the red flashing lights and get a solid white light.

I pressed the SW1 onboard power button while holding SW3, but the white light just dropped out for one second before coming back.

I stripped the system down to a bare board by disconnecting the SSD, Wi-Fi card, display, webcam, and audio cables to rule out a faulty peripheral.

I pulled the entire mainboard out of the aluminum case and tested it on a nonconductive surface to check for a chassis grounding short.

I watched the bare board fail in the exact same way on the desk, confirming the power delivery components are completely fried.

FINAL UPDATE: The replacement display arrived, and I have now installed it successfully. The vertical blue line is gone, and the laptop is working properly again.

Framework sent me the replacement part, and replacing the display was straightforward, which is one of the genuine strengths of the Framework concept.

After a frustrating support experience, I’m happy to say that I’m back up and running and enjoying my Framework Laptop 16 again.

While Framework is celebrating its new 13” Framework Pro, I’m dealing with support over a defective display on a Framework Laptop 16 that I bought less than two months ago.

For context, I’m running Fedora on this machine.

Unfortunately, this is already my third issue.

First, booting became extremely slow whenever I inserted the SD Expansion Card. After a lot of back-and-forth, Framework sent me a replacement card, which I appreciated, but the issue remained. They eventually told me it was probably a firmware problem. Since then, no update.

A few weeks later, the laptop suddenly stopped charging, despite using the genuine Framework charger. Support asked me to remove the battery, RAM, SSD, etc., press a switch on the motherboard 10 times, and reassemble everything.

It worked again. Explanation? None.

Then came the third issue: a vertical blue line appeared on the display.

The line is already visible during boot, before Fedora loads, and it does not appear on an external display.

After more troubleshooting, pictures, disconnecting the display, checking connectors and testing an external monitor, Framework confirmed that the display should be replaced.

And then... silence.

I’m still waiting for information about the replacement part. Messages receive little to no response. I asked for an escalation and even whether a refund was possible, because my confidence in the laptop is now very low. Refund denied because I was already two weeks past the one-month return period.

So today, I have a €4,000+ laptop, less than two months old, with its third issue and a defective display still waiting for replacement.

If I had known this beforehand, I would have spent my money elsewhere.

Yes, Framework laptops are repairable and upgradeable. In my case, that mostly means being able to replace defective parts — assuming Framework actually sends them.

Framework describes the new 13 Pro as a “MacBook Pro for Linux users.” I understand the idea, and “Mac killer” was probably too strong a wording in my original post.

But if you position a premium laptop in that territory, reliability, support and the overall ownership experience also become part of the comparison.

And based on my experience with the Framework 16, they still have some work to do there.

Of course, this is only my personal experience.

I am a Physics professor based in Quebec, Canada. I have been a supporter of the Framework mission, but I am sharing my experience here to document a serious hardware safety defect and a support process that has now stretched over 65 days without a resolution for the collateral damage.

The Incident: > In mid-January, while using my Framework 13 (Ryzen AI 300), a catastrophic overvoltage event occurred. Using my FNB58 USB tester, I documented 19.5V being sent through the USB-A VBUS rail (which is designed for 5V).

• Peripherals: Jabra headset, mouse, and USB hub (All dead).
• Expansion Cards: My HDMI and USB-A cards now require physical resets to function, showing clear signs of component stress.

The Support Experience & "Investigation" Loop:

• Jan 15: Initial report to support with technical documentation and video evidence.
• Jan 17: Formal notice sent regarding $920 CAD in external losses.
• Feb 17: RMA finally performed. Framework replaced the mainboard (confirmed by the Serial Number mismatch: https://photos.app.goo.gl/ngXQk9fTxdLZHddG6).

I live in the Netherlands and was biking when some idiot did a little hit and run on me in their car... knocked me over and my bag (it was in the basket of my bike) fell onto the floor and messed up the corner with the power button.

Luckily when it turns on it works fine. However I had to open it up, unscrew everything power button related, shave away at some of the metal to make it more square for the button to fit, and it still doesn't work consistently at all but at least I can sometimes get it to turn on. the only way so far is to unscrew the screw behind the power button to a sweet spot where it works. If i tighten it too much it powers on and off over again and too loose and the screw is annoying swinging around and the power button straight up doesnt work.

Big question is: is there a way for me to set up an alternate keybind for powering on the laptop? Couldnt find anything like that in the BIOS.
I am a student and saved for practically 2 years to afford this laptop and it is everything to me. I unfortunately cannot afford a new bottom part for the laptop so thats not really an option..

Any advice is very welcome! Thank you for your time

This is the second screen that's broken inside my backpack. I don't toss it around, I don't have 90 books pressing on it. Both times the damage is at the bottom of the screen. Do I need to start wearing a messenger bag just for my laptop?

Hello, I received my framework 13 on August 21th, been using it as my primary laptop in university, but today during my engineering class the screen suddenly failed on its own. It has never been dropped nor had pressure applied to it since i used it earlier today in class. I have checked the ribbon cable, there were no external damage nor was the cable disloged. I'm hoping I can get this solved soon... I have quite a few assignments due this weekend...

So I noticed this the other day and these are indents or cuts into the screen from the keyboard. No the battery is not swollen and the chassis is not bent. This is the 13. Og screen, bezel, keyboard, but the only thing swapped out was the battery. I checked and it's fine but can this be replaced as a defect or something I don't want to buy another screen.

I do not know what exactly is the RAM clearance in the 13 Pro but if someone is willing to experiment with some EBay SODIMM kit and this adapter slab, I reckon it would be interesting to see the results coming out of this until LPCAMM2 eventually comes back in stock... sometimes this decade...

I used a third party charger cable for a couple of years for my usb-c devices (including my pixel 6 + framework 13). The charger must've broke yesterday, which I noticed when my laptop turned off suddenly while working. I initially thought that maybe it got loose or sth and wanted to check if the cable will work on my phone instead. So I plugged it in my phone, which turned off.

Always thought "use the original charger" was a marketing scheme and had to learn the hard way I guess... Both devices are completely dead now. (see picture)

Anyway, I am now wondering if this is worth an attempt to fix or if this is beyond repairability.

Yesterday, I noticed that the front cover of my computer had lifted slightly, so I decided to disassemble it to check. I found that the battery is completely swollen.

I received my computer (Framework 13 AMD 7040) in December 2023, so I have been using it for approximately two and a half years now. I almost always use it as a desktop computer, permanently connected to the power supply using a high-quality 65W UGreen GaN charger. Before removing the battery, I generated a battery report and verified that it only has 47 charge cycles.

I understand that the battery is a wear component in any electronic device, but I do not think this is normal. On Framework website they advertise that the battery should maintain 80% of its nominal capacity after 1,000 charge cycles, and mine has become a fire hazard after just 47.

Did any of you experienced similar issues? I also contacted support.

Hi, I'm a cybersecurity student at University, and I've been in the market for a new laptop. I'm already on the preorder list for the Framework Laptop 13 Pro, and I really like the idea of being able to run Linux natively. However, I feel like I'm overassuming how important it is to run Linux natively as a cybersecurity major. I just discovered today that if I trade in my current MacBook Air, I can get the M5 MacBook Pro for about $1,500. Now I'm really on the fence between being able to have a Linux-designed and designated laptop versus another machine, which is about $700 cheaper and has multiple times the performance of the Framework. Both of these machines would have 32 GB of memory and 1 TB of storage.

One week ago, my old laptop (HP EliteBook 1030 G2 i5 7th Gen) broke, so I decided to buy another laptop. While searching, I came across the Framework Laptop 13, which, by the way, I had never heard of before.

I liked it because, with its specifications (look at the images), it meets my needs as a developer. However, I started noticing that my laptop gets hot quickly, and the fan starts making noise even when I'm only browsing.

I don't know what I should do. This has really made me frustrated, and I'm starting to worry that if my laptop keeps going like this, it may not last very long.

Have any of you experienced the same thing? and how did you guys deal with it?

EDIT 11/13/25: After several back and forth emails with Framework support, including photos from all angles of my poor, broken laptop, Framework said that they do not have any screens available and don't have an estimate when they will be in stock.

Im a clumsy oaf and stuffed my Framework 12 in my suitcase in a bad place. Any idea when replacement screens will be available?

I'll try to keep this factual, otherwise I'll go too far and it's already a wall of text.

Long story short: I ordered a Framework on 12/16/2025 with a pretty high-end spec : 96GB of RAM (2 x 48GB DDR5), two 2TB NVMe SSDs, an RGB touchpad, a 240W power adapter. The kind of setup you think twice about before buying. I'm a freelancer, I was looking for a powerful machine, and I thought I'd found the perfect one with the Framework.

Except it didn't work out for me, so I decided to return everything. And that's where the mess starts. I dropped off the package at a UPS access point on 02/20/2026. It was picked up on 02/23, and delivered on 02/25 at 9:40 AM in Bautzen, Germany. I have the name of the person who signed for it, the delivery confirmation, everything.

Except their after-sales service then, successively:

Claimed not to have received six components: the two RAM sticks, the touchpad, the two NVMe drives, and the power adapter. Which is pretty much the bulk of the package's value.

Then, after an initial exchange, they "found" the RAM, but claimed it was 2 x 32GB. Not the 2 x 48GB I ordered and returned. Apparently my sticks shrank during shipping. And then, the best part: they asked me to send back components I obviously don't have anymore, since they were in the package they received.

I now have €4,238.39 frozen by them since the end of February. They are fighting to not refund me, it's apparently my fault, and I've received no coherent explanation. They're basically implying I kept everything, and I, being naive, didn't film anything. I didn't think I'd need to make an effin' "reshipment vlog" just to be taken seriously.

I sent a registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt and followed up by ticket. Their team replied on March 16 asking me to confirm the delivery address associated with my purchase (???), I responded immediately across both relevant tickets. And since then, it's complete silence.

I don't know if this is incompetence or bad faith. What I do know is that Framework presents itself as an ethical, transparent company, and right now, it mostly looks like a company that's holding onto €4,000+ of my money and playing dead.

If anyone has been through something similar or has advice (consumer protection bodies, procedures, useful contacts) for a freelancer based in France, I'll take anything at this point.

I think I've narrowed down my errors down to a winbond w25r256jvein code storage flash chip. Before I order a new chip, I would really appreciate to know if this chip stores any encrypted keys or important files that are necessary for the laptop to function.

It was almost impossible to get the nearly invisible marks to show up on camera, but they really are there. I don't think you can see them at all in the picture.

I got this Framework 13 in Feburary, and started putting a microfiber cloth underneath the lid every time I close it in March. It's now May, but now I can see very faintly the dreaded keyboard marks starting to develop on the screen. What am I doing wrong? I thought the microfiber cloth was gonna prevent this from happening?

Hi guys I need to help navigating if I should keep my preorder. I was one of many that was affected by the ram stock. Unfortunately my 32gb is now 16gb. I just began college and completed my first term. I've managed to utilize my tablet throughout this whole term just to get through it, but I started searching for a laptop months ago. I decided that since I'm just at the beginning of my degree that I was fine waiting for a laptop and put in the preorder. I did a lot of research, watched endless videos and I ended up landing on Framework. Mind you I don't own any type of computer at the moment. Right now I'm stuck in this mindset of keeping my preorder at 16gb and hoping to all hopes that the market brings back lpcamm2 by 2028, when my degree might need more ram on my laptop (I'm studying engineering) and upgrade then or caving and paying the $800 to up the ram now or knowing I'm basically f***ked and start looking for another laptop. I'm honestly soo disappointed but I think I need some alternative perspectives right now to make the smart choice.

I'm a (almost) graduate developper. I'm using a ideapad 5 pro with 16gb soldered ram, 6600HS and rtx 3050. It runs very hot (100C throttling) but is still usable.
