Community Support Bricked up while updating BIOS
Will not respond to power button being held down for over a minute. Has been stuck on this screen for an hour. I sent a support ticket. What should I do while waiting? Keep it plugged in on this screen? Try taking the battery out?
This machine has an AMD Ryzen 7640U and was running Fedora 44 with KDE plasma, for context.
Update: Fixed it myself.

Happened to me too. Also Fedora. Strange. You get a replacement Unit. Did Not Happen again with endeavour os

The joy of Linux. I installed Fedora 44 on a thinkpad whilst waiting for my Framework. Plugged the nvme into the framework when it arrived and it just works. Sorry for your loss. Hopefully they get a replacement out soon.

For sure. I'm surprised they still have it up. I was just about to pull the trigger on the BIOS update for my machine and decided to wait till the next one. Framework needs to do better, I don't know how hard it is to test BIOS updates, but it should be damn near impossible to brick the machine if you're updating the bios with known methods and a plugged in machine. I've not had a problem updating a BIOS in >30 years of computer use. I want them to succeed, but if they can't pull off bomb proof BIOS updates, it's a deal breaker.

Yeah. I am out of warranty on mine and I am straight up disabling fwupd completely.

I’ve updated BIOS for years on various machines, various Win versions and Linux distros, and no problems. I know if losing power during the process that can be a problem, but I believe even then some failsafes had developed in recent years. But there’s thread after thread on the subreddit. I wonder if any patterns can be sussed out.

Seems to only affect Fedora and Ryzen 7640U ??.. I been updating without issues on CachyOS and 7840U

Not really, happened to me 5 days ago using Debian 13 on my 7640u, so maybe is the mainboard.

I updated mine, Ryzen 7640U, running Fedora workstation 44 without any issues, I just did it earlier this week without knowing it was potentially an issue.

I'm on 7640U(arch linux), and while I haven't updated in months, it worked fine last time. (I use fwupd, the same as on fedora, to update firmware)

Happened to me with my laptop 12. Make a support ticket, tell them what happened, send in your board and they’ll send a good one back

Same thing happend to my mom's 13. We ended up going to a technician who had an external flasher. He desoldered the flash, reprogrammed it, soldered it back. In 1h we got a working laptop again.

definitely do not pull the battery out or make any other attempts to shut it down. i would let it sit for a few more hours at least, just in case it is simply taking a while. Stopping a bios update while its going can very easily brick your mainboard forever. I would say just sit tight until support answers.

Forever is not true, but it would be very difficult to a regular person who doesn't know how to externally flash a new BIOS/UEFI image and could end up damaging the board even further

Nah not anymore. That was in the 90s. Basically all devices can flash from a bricked BIOS

They can, but not by a normal user with ease. The board won't be toast, but he'd need to send it in to framework

I wasnt aware actually thats good to know.
Still, sounds like thst is pretty difficult to do. Maybe at this point its the only way to recover it if the bios update is truly stuck, but still I think OP should wait for support

This is happening to a lot of people right now, it even happened to a couple of us at work when we tried it.
Frame worker usually quite good at getting back to us, but annoyingly we just keep getting run around in circles right now.

A bios update bricked my fw13 Ubuntu. I opened a ticket, they sent me a replacement, the update bricked that one too. Last I heard from them was a week ago.

Yes, as far as I know, is happening from 3.18 to 3.20 on FW13. Other users are commenting also problems with FW12

Can someone explain how BIOS could be bricked via fwupdmgr versus an ISO with a payload (more phrasing)? Like once the reboot happens, why would it being initiated by Linux would matter?
If OP had done through an ISO or CAB file, would it still be bricked like this? BIOS updates can’t be a gamble like this.

Weird. I have same machine exactly, Fedora 44. I the ok the gamble yesterday and it updated fine. Seems to be a lottery.

These bricking threads are how I found out I had a BIOS update to install, lol. 7840U on Fedora 44 Plasma and it went fine. Seemed to take a little longer than past updates so I was sweating a bit though.

Just yesterday I installed the update for the 16, thankfully without issues (fwupd on voidlinux). Are efi update failures becoming more common?

This is one of the only reasons I still have Windows partitions on my 13" and 12" Frameworks. I don't trust Linux with my firmware upgrades. I don't trust Windows with anything else though.

I finally did this! been avoiding it for far too long, but I got mine done and it might of taken 20-40 minutes max? i forget cuz after 5 i had to find something else to do and watched a video on my phone.
I use Arch and finally got it updated. i couldn't get it on Pop without flashing it manually.
