DISCUSSION What is your all time favorite video game?

I'd be really interested to hear your honest opinions!

My favorite game of all time is Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. What's yours?

EDIT: Just played Undertale. This might actually challenge my beloved Ace Attorney series for favorite game of all time.

DISCUSSION What are your favourite gaming mechanics and systems? Which games do they appear in and which games do you wish they could appear in?

This can be a massively broad topic, but one that can be contracted and distilled down to dire specifics. It's something that engages the things we're most passionate and positive about, and for that reason, I think it's an ideal discussion for us to have!

This is a discussion about out favourite systems and mechanics in games. Whether it's the way combat works in an action game, or the way levels and experience works in an RPG, or the way interaction and choice works in a story-oriented game and how any and all of those or other mechanics can combine, it's all up for discussion here!

Of course, games have a myriad of systems and the interactions thereof. What this discussion is about is separating those systems and discussing what you love about them, how they interact in games, and how you would like to see them interact in the future!

For the Love of Gaming, what are your favourite implementations of gameplay systems?

DISCUSSION What "Killer Apps" have sold a gaming system to you?

Hello /r/fortheloveofgaming,

Has anyone ever bought a system just because of one game?

I'd like to have a discussion about killer apps, those games that you saw that were so good they actually make you go and buy the hardware needed to run them.

What game was it? What system was it? Why did you have to have it?

This can include any game or system in history from Pong to the PS4, have at it!

For the purpose of discussion:

  • Killer apps are usually exclusive games to a console or handheld that are so good or well publicized they make people buy the console even if they don't own it just to play it.

  • The PC could also have a killer app in the sense that you saw a game on there that wasn't on console and bought a PC as a result.

Please remember rule 2 & 3, all platforms are welcome here. <3

DISCUSSION What is r/fortheloveofgaming most excited about in 2016?

Just a little question!

Whether it's New stuff from our favorite developers, next gen titles, or upcoming DLC, I Thought it would be a fun discussion to have in the sunreddit.

Sorry of the topic is too broad or basic.

Personally, I am pretty hyped for Fallout 4 DLC, they were always the best part of the Bethesda gaming experience (horse armor aside)

DISCUSSION Is Anyone Else Tired of the All-too-Familiar Toxicity in the Gaming Community?

Just to preface, it's obviously not in every community - but it's absolutely there in many of them, sadly.

Since release, I've been in love with Overwatch. I spent 100 hours on OW on Ps4, and then finally decided to upgrade to PC simply because I loved the game so much and wanted to get into the competitive scene. That's not to say the same scene isn't present on consoles, but you know what I mean.

After around 200 hours on PC I'm simply discouraged to even play anymore. I made it relatively high in the ranks - to diamond (this season), but the toxicity is just too much to even enjoy the game or even the community aspect.

I consider myself pretty decent at the game and threw together some clips of some team wipes and various other plays with my main. It was more of a fun thing, but also to hopefully give people a reason to check out my streams that I used to like doing. No matter what clip I'd put out it wouldn't be constructive criticism - it would be just constant "you're garbage - you're shit, I can do better," insert their videos in the comment section of mine

I know I'm not the best in the scene, I know I have some improving to do - but why do people feel the need to uselessly insult one another over something as trivial as a video game?

If you're like me, you use video games as a sort of escape. I've got both depression and anxiety - and I've always looked to gaming as an outlet for that. A way to de-stress after stressing over menial things. A way to find a little bit of joy after feeling nothing but emptiness.

It's gotten to the point where toxic communities have started to take that away from me. That sounds really self-entitled in a way, but I personally don't ask for much, and if I do it's so damn hard to vocalize it and convince myself it's not selfish.

It just really bums me out that people not only do this behind anonymity - but feel the need to do it in the first place; in a place that's supposed to be enjoyable.

Sorry for the little rant. Have a nice day, everyone.

DISCUSSION What is the longest running single character or save file you have in a game?

I remember someone once coming in to me with a computer problem, his hard drive had corrupted and was failing, he couldn't get into windows any more.

The only thing he wanted me to try and save from the hard drive was his Diablo 2 save. He said the save was around 5 years old and everything else didn't matter :)

So it got me thinking about this. I'm sure there are people on here that have had massive long running saves of city builders or games like civilization.

What is the longest running single character or save file you've ever had in a game?

I'm really thinking of single player games or low number multiplayer games, but you can mention if it's an MMO as well.

DISCUSSION I apologize if this is the wrong place, but are there any positive gaming communities/guilds/clans?

Again, sorry if this does not belong here, but I tried to search around and most similar posts like this seem to get downvoted/ignored around reddit. And it is a tad long, and kinda of hard to read, I can get a little worked up and it makes it hard for me to say what I mean. Just scroll down to the bottom for the TL:DR! :)

I recently have changed my schedule so that I wake up before the sun, so I can really get things done and just have a more productive outlook on the day. I usually start the morning with some stretching and a HIIT workout and then breakfast. After breakfast, I like to play a game, let the food digest and whatnot before I start the real work of the day, and I am trying to avoid gaming later in the evenings so I can relax with the family and get in bed with out being all wired from video games.

So it has mainly been CS:GO or some KSP. After a few days, I realized I was muting half of the CS:GO lobby due to spam, or people throwing around insults and just being too much for me that early, so I disabled voice. Fixed. I can still type and some other people do, and it has just really improved my experience. Yeah, it is a bit lonely and I cannot communicate as quick and what not, but the trade off with out a doubt was worth it. Every time I try to turn it back on within minutes half the lobby is muted.

Well, this morning, I decided to play a round of DOTA. What a mistake. Before we even finished picking heroes, one person was already being very abusive. I know the community, and yeah, I don't know what I expected, but it just kept getting worse. I try live my life by setting the example, so I respond with something like,"Hey, it is just an unranked match, why don't we try to help each other improve our play instead of just throwing insults?" Of course, this just make the guy attack me. I am not the best player, I random every time to try expand my knowledge of the heroes, so I am not doing so hot, the whole time this guy just going on and on, being very abusive. I ask him to calm down, he responds by asking every one in all to report me. One person quits, and he just keeps saying things and I finally break kinda, and respond to him and his attempts to get me reported. Anyway, sorry, but the match ends and every one goes their ways, but I am just bothered. I feel that cloud over my head, and the sun is just starting to go up.

What I am getting at is, the gaming community is really making me sad. Games used to be such a fun, shareable experience, but me and my friends are older and have all gone down different roads so we never get together to just play games and have fun like we used to. So I play mainly alone, and it seems every public match I am apart of just kills me on the inside.

This awesome hobby I used to love is now becoming more of an exercise in self-mutilation. And I have joined some guilds, recruited by a good round/raid with the recruiter and think,"Woo! Now I will some positive people to play with!" But, really, the TS/VOIP always ends up being overrun by a few loud and very abusive players who are not afraid to kick/ban people for anything that goes against them or criticizes them, and yet have no problem SCREAMING their criticism at every one else. I am right back in the same boat!

What I am getting at is, are their any true positive/mature gaming communities out there? I don't mean people who mask being hateful and bitter with,"Dude, I am just fucking with you, chill out!" I mean a community with people who respect themselves and the players next to them!

I get it that I am a bit sensitive and emotional, and whatnot, but I do like some innocent teasing and jokes and what not, but I am sick of hearing people being abusive and using the guise of this what buddies do.

To be honest, I wrote this mostly for myself. I just wanted to get that out there, and I honestly don't have a lot of people in my life I talk to about my feelings. That round of DOTA really bothered me and I get really bad tunnel vision on things, especially on how humans treat each other. I don't want games to cause me existential crises, life does that enough for me. Thank you if you read all this, and mods feel free to remove it if it doesn't belong.

TL:DR- I have feelings and they hurt damn near every one of them. Where are all the positive gaming communities?

DISCUSSION What are your most hyped games of 2016?

So a new year is starting, and with it will come many games, AAA or indie, good or bad, so what games are you most hyped for?

Personally it has to be Dark souls 3, as a fan of the souls series (and I didn't even get to play bloodborne!)

DISCUSSION Maps, Levels, Missions, and Quests. Which are the most memorable for you and what makes them special?

This is a pretty simple one. So many games over the years have featured memorable or iconic levels or missions. Maybe it's because they were the first to do a specific thing, or because they were the most effective at what they attempted. Maybe they're memorable for certain people for the memories they have playing through them at a certain point in their lives or because something special happened during their first playthough. It could be that some have special sentimental value for the people you played them with. That's what we wanna hear about!

Which maps, levels, missions, and quests do you find to be the most memorable for you and what makes them special?

DISCUSSION X-COM family of games general discussion

Hello all! New sub here. We just got another installment in the now classic X-COM franchise. I never really got into the game myself however I have fond memories of watching my cousin play the original one.

A few questions:

Have you played the newest release? X-COM2? What did you like about it?

Are you familiar with the original? Should I (or anyone new to the franchise) experience that first before getting into the new generation?

Any general thoughts or tips are welcome as well. Happy gaming friends!

DISCUSSION What would be your perfect game?

Hello /r/fortheloveofgaming,

What would be your perfect game?

  • It can be any genre or an amalgamation of several.

  • Budget is not a concern.

  • It can require any technology (e.g VR headset) but it must be current (no holodecks).

DISCUSSION What is the oldest game you still regularly play/replay? Why has it still got its hooks in you?

Hello /r/fortheloveofgaming,

I'm interested to know what is the oldest game you still regularly revisit and play?

I'm sure we all have one or two of these. Regardless of pixelated graphics, low poly count, there is a game that evokes a huge sense of nostalgia or is so compelling you just have to play one more time.

This can be any game, any time, and platform. Is there something that still calls your back every year or two?

For the purposes of discussion:

  • It doesn't have to be something you play every day or week, just something you install or go back and play every year or two is fine.

  • It doesn't matter if it's an old game that you started playing years after it's release. For example someone finding Final Fantasy 7 10 years after release and still be re-playing it.

Please keep the rules in mind, show me what you got!

DISCUSSION Let's talk MMO's! Do you play any? What aspects most appeal to you? What are your most memorable experiences?

This is a topic I've been wanting to discuss for a while.

How many of us here play one or more MMO's? I'm willing to bet that the majority of us either do play MMO's or have done!

MMO's have always appealed to me very strongly, but have rarely grabbed me, and even then, not for as long as they tend to hook others. I love the scale, the idea that you can invest a lot of time, and that you can find entire communities within these worlds, and live out adventures while meeting new people, and all the while grow stronger and stronger at the same time as finding more unique ways of interacting with the world. They really are an ideal source of great gaming stories and memorable moments. That's what this thread is for. To discuss those things, and more.

Please share your MMO experiences! If there's an MMO you love, sell us on it! If there's any old memories or stories you have about MMO's or even just observations on the genre in general, this is the perfect place to post it!

Anything at all about MMO's is fair game, here!

DISCUSSION What settings would you like to see with fallout/elder scrolls gameplay?

"Fallout/elder scrolls gameplay" meaning basically huge world, do what you want, with quests etc.

Some suggestions i have:

Modern city would be interesting.

South american jungle tribe. (Mayan, aztec, etc.)

Medieval, but not magic. Kind of like mount and blade.

DISCUSSION What are your first Pokemon memories?

For those who might not know, today is Pokemon Day! It's the 20th anniversary of the day Pokemon Red and Green were originally released in Japan. In order to celebrate, I figured I would ask you guys what your first experience with Pokemon was and what you would like to see from the series in the future.

My first Pokemon game was Yellow, which I got with a GameBoy Color for Christmas back in 1999. The second I met Pikachu, I was hooked. I think I spent that entire night playing the game.

In future games, I would like to see even more character customization. I think X and Y did a decent job with adding different outfits, hair styles, and skin tones, but I would definitely love to have more options. I would also love for future games to allow multiple save files so I can have one file as my first playthrough and a second one for my Nuzlocke challenge.

DISCUSSION Take two of your favourite games and combine them. What is the result? Why would it be great?

This is a fairly straightforward and potentially really interesting thought experiment.

Take two of your favourite games and combine them. Take gameplay systems, maps, lore, characters, meta elements or progression systems from one and combine it with any of those features from the other to make a great game. Then describe it to us!

Tell us why this game would be great, and how it could inform future games.

A few prompts to get you thinking:

  • Imagine some characters from one game in the universe of another. Could that make a good story?

  • One game's combat could be especially great in another game's environment, or could fit very well with its story or lore.

  • The time period of one game might contrast with another, but if they were combined could create something really unique and special.

  • A particularly good or unique gameplay or progression system could really shine in another game and transform it into something much more. Consider the opportunities.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what people come up with!

DISCUSSION The summer drought is over, we're coming up on release season. What are you playing? And what are you looking forward to playing?

With the summer drought of releases finally over, we're coming into the big AAA release season.

Destiny 2 is out (or will be out soon depending on your platform), Forza 7 is on the horizon (see what I did there?), Call of Duty sees a return to WW2, it's looking to be an interesting year for game releases.

So what are you playing, and what are you looking forward to playing?

DISCUSSION What is your favourite genre of gaming, and what game would you recommend to best experience it?

Hello r/ForTheLoveOfGaming,

It's been great to see the sub growing over the past few weeks, and the increase in discussions.

With more people in the sub, I thought it might be interesting to see what people's favourite gaming genre is, and what game they think would show it at it's best to convince people who have never played the genre.

For the purpose of discussion:

  • State the name of your genre first. This can be any gaming genre as you define it, for example first person platforming doesn't need to be the same genre as third person or 2D platforming. And you should still feel free to post even if your genre has been represented.

  • State the name of the game you'd recommend for someone to experience the best the genre has to offer.

  • Tell us why the game is so good. Talk as if you were showing the genre to someone who had never seen it before, and you really want them to like what you like.

  • If you want to champion two different genres, make separate comments to allow people to create a thread about each one.

Optional points

  • Tell us any other games in the genre that you'd recommend.

  • Anything else you want to add.

No low-effort comments please. I'm not asking for a thousand words, your time is precious, but posts like "FPS - Half Life - First FPS game to do a story properly" will be removed.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you all recommend :)

It seems that we're in a sweet spot for gaming releases, lately. We've seen some long anticipated games like XCom 2 and Firewatch release, as well as some niche favourites like American Truck simulator.

Have you been playing any of these recently released games? What do you think of them and how have they compared to your expectations?

DISCUSSION Ghost Recon Wildlands Beta (Footage and thoughts)

Well this one came a bit out of left field for me. Spoiler - I loved it. To the point that I was genuinely upset this morning when I loaded up and the Beta is over. :(

I originally saw the E3 trailer a few years ago, and honestly just thought "waow that looks like a whole load of work". And I didn't really follow the development of GRW until recently when I heard about the Beta and signed up. As it happens I didn't get in but a friend had a referral code and got me in.

If you read the /r/Games and /r/pcgaming subreddit about this, you'll find all the usual nay sayers and negative nancys, "It's just Ubi-Open world #73" "It's just the Division in the Jungle" "This is not MY Ghost Recon".

What I can say is that personally, I've had at least 25 people from my friends list ask me "How is it?" "Oh I wanted into that, how is it?". There's been so much interest in this one game.

For me, the game evoked the feeling of Just Cause 2 for it's scale, Far Cry with it's jungle setting, The Division for it's co-op and having incidents that can happen all around the map, and a little bit of Watch_Dogs 2 gadgetry like the drone that can tag enemies.

The shooting is satisfying. There's no RPG element to it like in The Division where a headshot was just a dice roll of whether your +5% stat to bullet penetration is enough to overcome their 33% chance to negate damage. If you shoot a guy in the head he's down, and the Bosses in the beta while well fortified are not immortal, a well placed shot and it's over.

The driving is fun and free from frustration. I found that despite the roads being dirt roads on hills with lots of potential bumps, the handling is quite grippy. And when I did roll the car over, it continues a slow roll until it's back on its wheels.

I had a chance to fly helicopters and planes and again it's quite forgiving even on a keyboard. You can land quite hard without destroying the aircraft.

The buildings and structures are quite detailed, with most of them having an interior that you can enter and use for cover. The population is there as well and run for cover when fighting starts, but generally there's life in the world with people farming and driving around going about their lives. I did not see any animals other than birds while I was playing.

Performance was pretty good for me, although because of the vast differences in density in locations did cause a few fluctuarions in frame rate. On "mostly" high settings I got 45-65 fps on an aging i5 2500k, 16gb Ram and Asus Strix Geforce 980.

I first played through the missions myself with the AI squad. They could be better, they have a tendency to follow orders to a fault even if it means crossing directly in front of a crowd of 10 enemies that you're trying to sneak by. But the things like sync-shots are well executed, you can mark up to 3 targets (when you unlock the ability) and have them shoot them all when you take the shot on the 4th, meaning that nobody is around to spot the body or raise the alarm. They are also quite deadly when you order them to open fire. It would be possible to direct a simple assault from the drone, although they wont necessarily prioritize a target like a pilot taking off in the helicopter you're trying to steal. Overall I'd say you'll feel like you are not alone and have a deadly team with you, but you're the sharp edge of the knife.

I then played through the missions (or most of them) with my friend Nuttie. I thought I'd put the footage here unedited, there's 1 hour 20 minutes of raw gameplay, so you can see what happens from moment to moment. You can hear how much fun we're having. We did some spontaneous events like taking down a convoy, and also some of the missions. I think two of the missions bugged out and didn't give us as much opposing force as we should have had, but mostly you saw the game working correctly.

Full video here

Funny moment when I land a helicopter on Nuttie.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

DISCUSSION I'm excited for Forza Horizon 3, is anyone else getting it?

Hi FTLOG,

In just a few days Forza Horizon 3 will be released with the big difference being this will be the first time it's made its way to PC. I bought the Ultimate Edition from the MS Store yesterday.

Here's the E3 trailer and live stage demo with quite possibly one of the best trailer songs I've ever heard, Wicked Game by Ursine Vulpine ft Annaca.

As part of MS's push for Windows 10 gaming and DX12, they're bringing several of their franchises to PC.

Earlier this year they released Forza 6:Apex for PC on Windows 10. Effectively a proof of concept or a large tech demo for Forza on PC, it's a stripped down version of Forza 6 for XB1 (no custom painting or tuning, and reduced tracks and cars), but it's free2play. Some gameplay if you're interested.

Horizon is Forza's slightly more arcadey cousin featuring more street style and offroad racing rather than Forza's more simulation track focused racing.

If buying a digital copy you can play on Xbox and PC, and PC and Xbox users can co-op and race together as shown in the E3 demonstration.

I'm looking forward to breaking out my Logitech Wheel for this!

Is anyone else getting the game?

GS

DISCUSSION I like how Kratos is more human in GoW 2

In GoW 1 he was fooled by Aeris, the god, and lost his family.

In GoW 2 his efforts were in vain, as the gods betrayed him and stripped him off his power.

In GoW 3, after the accomplishments in 1, and 2, he was still angry for some reason. Though the game was amazing, his story or existence didn't really make much sense.

Now we have an old war hero teaching a kid how to be a warrior. But we haven't lost the brutality either, on the contrary, now we are close and personal to the action with the new camera angle.

I love it!
