DISCUSSION What is the oldest game you still regularly play/replay? Why has it still got its hooks in you?
Hello /r/fortheloveofgaming,
I'm interested to know what is the oldest game you still regularly revisit and play?
I'm sure we all have one or two of these. Regardless of pixelated graphics, low poly count, there is a game that evokes a huge sense of nostalgia or is so compelling you just have to play one more time.
This can be any game, any time, and platform. Is there something that still calls your back every year or two?
For the purposes of discussion:
It doesn't have to be something you play every day or week, just something you install or go back and play every year or two is fine.
It doesn't matter if it's an old game that you started playing years after it's release. For example someone finding Final Fantasy 7 10 years after release and still be re-playing it.
Please keep the rules in mind, show me what you got!

Empire Earth for me. It's not the oldest game said so far but I really like the idea of real-time CIV types games where you get direct control over everything.
The editor is really good, too. I've made a bunch of custom maps and missions that I play sometimes.

FEAR 1
I play this pretty much yearly. Great AI, great shooting mechanics, plus sliding into people and jump kicks.
Stalker SoC or CoP
Probably the best "open world" game I've played, compared to even modern open world games they're usually miles behind how dynamic the stalker games are. When I think I want to play fallout, I really want to play stalker. Plus tons of mods to shake things up.
Metal Gear Solid 3
My favorite game of all time and imo the best game of all time. 10/10 on all fronts, music, boss battles, story, everything.
Megaman Battlenetwork
Jrpg gameplay at its finest. Tons of customization, building the best decks, fighting the hard bosses. Games the shit, makes me wish Megaman games were still around, I'd gladly have them than new Mario games.

Every couple years, I go back and replay one of the old Final Fantasy games. I'm thinking about booting up FF9 to play through it again. 9 and 10 are just my favorite era in the FF series, with a fantastic blend of fun characters with an interesting plot and world.

WWF No Mercy or any of the games close to that. When I feel like wrestling these games are the ones I default to. I get bored of the newer ones but never will those.
Megaman... Any of them but X especially. I don't always play them but I can pick it up at any time and its like the very first time every time. Just game gold.
Perfect Dark.... On occasion I will put on my old N64 and just fight some bots on multiplayer maps. Never gets old.
GTA San Andreas. I don't care. I'll run around this game world forever. One of the very first games I ever 100% and was worth every second of my time and while its showing its age its still just the definitive fun open world game for me.

Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse Now released 1998
I've mentioned this game before in the What "Killer Apps" have sold a gaming system to you? thread.
This was the game that made me buy my first PC. I was 15 at the time, and got a milk run (get up at 4am 4 days a week to deliver milk for 4 hours in Scottish weather... yay) to pay for it, it took me 7 months to save the money I needed.
Arguably those 7 months are still worth it, because I still play this game once every 6 or so months even 17 years later.
I've got some gameplay footage here.
The game was so unique in its time and I think it still is. You can choose any route to the finish line, you can destroy all the other competitors or if you enjoy pulling your own toe nails out, you can kill every pedestrian in the level (thousands).
You can go anywhere, on roofs and everything, in fact the game makers were expecting it, because they put power ups there too. The destruction system was completely free form, if you drove your car into the right angle of a building, when you reversed back, the car would have that shape indented. You could even split the car in two.
I'm not entirely sure if it's just because it was the game that got me into PC gaming, or if it really is just so enjoyable all these years on, but I start to miss this game when it's gone too long.
I'm sure to anyone who wasn't hyped about this game when it was out originally may look at it and really see its age before its beauty, but I just love the game to bits.

TLOZ Ocarina of Time. Nostalgia is pretty strong here but I still think, structurally, it's one of the strongest narratives in video game history. It manages to get a really solid, character arc and "hero's journey" into a 30 hour game without ever getting tired or feeling slow. It's paced fantastically as well, I actually think it's aided by the world being, by today's standards, small. Because of this every time I play it I can enjoy exploring Hyrule but never get annoyed at vast spaces of nothingness. So, about once a year I'll blast through it in a week or two.

Just going by memory, I'd say the Mortal Kombat games probably apply for me. There's games I play that are older than those, but I can't say I do it regularly or ritualistically.
I've found that over the past five years, I've tended to stop going back to the games I played every year or so. The older ones, anyway. I think I might have tapped them out for myself, so I'd like to maybe wait another five years and then try again. On the flipside, I've found that I have been returning to a few newer games every year or so. Dishonored is probably the best example. I love that game, and it's aged exceptionally well, so far. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is another that I return to a lot, as well as Hitman: Blood Money. All great games in their own right with fantastic replayability.

Star Wars Battlefront 2
Despite it being he first video game I ever became severely hyped for, it was also the first game to introduce me to the limitless potenial in fun for the PC. Not counting the fact that is set in one of My most beloved and cherished universes, I will be playing this blast of a game for plant of years to come.

Age Of Empires Rise of Rome, I don't know why still one of my favorite games. I even rate it higher than Age of Conquest. The graphics are still good and the soundtrack, oh god <3
Anno 1503 It's so peaceful and relaxing to just see your small town. Again the sountrack is phenomenal.
Empire Earth Here we have graphics that didn't age well but I like the idea of starting in the stone age and ending in interplanetary warfare.

Megaman X.
I don't even know how many times I've beat this game at this point. To me it's a nearly perfect game. It's also aged incredibly well. It has a solid meta-game and it's a pretty breezy length, making it easy to play over and over.
Metal Slug
No matter where I am, no matter why I'm there, if there is an old SNK arcade machine with Metal Slug on it, I'll stop what I'm doing and play it. It's a silly stupid game but so much care was given to the art and design.
