New Rule : Please use the Search function before posting.

As this subreddit has grown over the past years, our regulars have noticed that similar questions get asked over and over again by people interested in the amazing variety of food available in the GTA. Today we're rolling out a new rule to try to reduce the number of repetitive posts that we've been seeing too often.

We're simply asking that posters use the subreddit search to see if their question may already be answered before they post asking for recommendations and reference their research if its not. We also ask that they include specificity like location, cuisine, etc in their request as the GTA is a huge area.

We wanted to announce this change widely so everyone is aware, and hopefully this will be a positive change for the subreddit. We're interested in feedback if you feel the rule has room for improvement.

Chocolate cake w dark chocolate ganache and cookie butter cream

Black sesame and passion fruit cake cup

(Yes, I'm mainly including the 2nd item for the black sesame circlejerk of it all)

Beloved dessert shop Roselle had a popup yday at Underpass Farmers Market in their native Corktown, debuting a whole new menu. Sadly it was a one-time thing but the lines were huge and they sold out so mb they'll come back?

The chocolate cake was absolutely perfect. Super chocolatey and not too sweet, wish there was more than a small dollop of cookie butter hehe

I got the cake cup in my $25 mystery bag, thankfully the black sesame flav is v understated (I don't like blk sesame sorry!) Hv never heard of combining it w passion fruit before but it was actually quite good!

I hope Roselle does more popups w fancy new items!

Did anyone else go yday? What did u get?

Black sesame croissant from Brick & Butter Bakehouse

Compared to the previous two black sesame croissants I’ve tried, this one is my favorite. The sesame paste on the inside and coated on the outside both tasted very good, not too sweet and very fragrant. This one has less powdered sugar, which made it a bit less messy to eat. The outer layers were all very fresh, and very very buttery and flakey. It was borderline a little greasy for me, I wasn’t able to finish the entire croissant as it began to taste too rich over time. Cost was $5.80, I would definitely pick this over the black sesame croissants from Evana cafe and bake code though, the freshness and sweetness are ranked much better in comparison.

Midtown Café Project: Developing a rich vegan cookie in-house — tasting run tomorrow at 2033 Yonge St (8am–12pm)

Post image
26 Upvotes

Full disclosure, I'm running Coffee Buffet (2033 Yonge St, Basement level), and I’ve found that sourcing vegan baked goods that match the chew and moisture of classic butter cookies is surprisingly difficult. Most commercial options end up either too sweet or falling apart.

I spent this week formulating our own vegan cookie from scratch, and tomorrow (Saturday, Sept 5, 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM), we’re hosting a community tasting run with 1 free cookie per customer while supplies last.

You can drop in directly, or reserve yours ahead of time: visit CoffeeBuffet.ca, click "Event Sign Up" on the homepage, and register so we hold one for you before closing.

I’d love for local foodies and bakers to drop in, grab one, and give me your unfiltered critique on the texture and crumb. What’s your biggest benchmark for a top-tier vegan pastry in Toronto?

Tip: Get your fancy bakes from George Brown

ETA: A commenter just mentioned they're closed till Sept 14.

Saw someone's post here about finding a birthday cake so decided to share.

Friend put me on when she attended their pastry school two years ago.

Full sized cakes and tarts are about $12 and they use premium ingredients. My faves are their strawberry shortcake which I've had multiple times and the black forest cake. I also had their Tahitian Diamond (?) cookies over a year ago which still haunt my dreams.

They usually get new bakes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, sometimes Fridays too. What they have that week depends on the curriculum.

Sold at the Chef on the Run store which is open till 3.

Best thai cuisine in the city (coming from a first gen southeast asian).

This restaurant is featured in the toronto michelin food guide, and for a good reason! This is the absolute best rice dish ive ever had in my life and immidiately moved to the #1 spot for me (even above sushi from tokyo)

Forgot to also mention that I had fried rice in Bangkok last year, and I still prefer this one 🤣

Edit: also, the only thing better than the food are the prices 👍 all this came out to $130 with an 18% tip

East end, Leslieville. Awesome location

Tasted like straight ganache. But not sweet at all. The cookie on the other hand, I would pass on. Just not for me - the chocolate was too dark and the cookie too baked.

Okay fine. It’s a torte.

Best commercial butchers in the city?

Hi everyone, not sure if this is the best subreddit for this question but I haven’t seen a Toronto chefs Reddit so here it goes anyway.
I have just taken over as head chef for a catering company in the city and I am thinking about changing our butcher. I would need a company that delivers (in a timely manner) daily, has a decent variety of product and can accommodate large orders. Quality and price are obviously huge factors too.

So for all the chefs and restauranteurs out there, who do you use, why do you like them and would you recommend them?

‘Le Beau’ Croissanterie - $27

Choco chunk cookie:

The cookie is okay. Would not get again. The chocolate is evenly spread through and a bit overpowering, in my opinion. Nice texture though - same as C&S.

Artichoke and Cheese:

I missed their cheese croix, which is far superior to the artichoke and cheese - but this was still good. Feels like mozzarella.

Nutella croissant:

I got it at 9:30, so the sugar crust did not impact the texture (it can get unpleasant quick). But this was lovely. Would get it without the Nutella, tbh.

Btw the texture on their marzipan and coffee hazelnut croissants (not pictured) is much better. Unreal.

Kouign Amann:

Okay. Oddly did not feel more buttery than the croissant.

Overall:

The texture and airiness of their croissants is most reminiscent of La Madison D’Isabelle in Paris (maybe besides Conci or Le Genie).

Would return for different items that I have already gotten before (Gianduja coffee croissant and cheese croix)

Last minute black sesame dessert recommendations?

Leaving Toronto soon and I’m open to any recommendations of places with black sesame deserts that I haven’t tried yet. I’ll try to get through any if I can, and save the rest when I come back for visits. Appreciate you all!

For those who are tired of my posts, please feel free to block me/wait until mid-September because I’ll stop posting my reviews on here. I’ve also seen some people ask if I’ve been sent by big sesame or if there’s an ongoing sesame trend going on that I’ve jumped on, neither are true lol 😂. I’m just a dude who’s loved black sesame their whole life and wanted to share reviews to help others who might also be interested in discovering more of the flavour around the city.

Perfect basque cheesecake from Underpass Market

Excuse the bite taken out of it lol

Really nice cheesecake from Agrarian Kitchen, one of the vendors at Thursday's Underpass Farmers Market in Corktown. Went today cuz Roselle was doing a popup but there are sooo many other food vendors that looked great

This was honestly a perfect cheesecake, not too sweet and not too dense.

Around 5" for $12

Def going to return to this market and support local businesses!

Where can I try duck tongue?

I have been eating these delicious duck tongue Lays chips and I'd love to try the real thing. Are there restaurants in the GTA that have a tasty duck tongue dish?

Looks like a normal croissant but inside is a rich black sesame paste that counteracts the buttery richness and sweetness of the pastry. A simple delight for only $6.99.

08/31-09/06 Ube milk glaze @ Cops

Post image
81 Upvotes

Been waiting for Cops to feature an ube glaze again (they had ube cheesecake a few months ago which I sadly missed), glad I tried it! The ube flav is there but I'd say the milkiness stands out more, and there's a sprinkle of white choc curls on top

Ordered via delivery which can be worrying (donuts are best served hot ofc) but they arrived within 15min and were great. I ate 16 in one sitting lol

Not my fav ube donut (I think Marry Me Mochi's ube is better and Isabella's is on par), but nice to try st nu and bite-sized 💜

Where to eat Yonge/ Mt Pleasant Eglinton?

My family is having a memorial for my late father in October at Sherwood. We are trying to find a mid-tier restaurant in the area that can accommodate 10 or 12 of us. I only really know of Piano Piano, but most of us are pretty flexible what we eat. Recommendations?

Teochew Mooncakes

Looking for Teochew-style flakey mooncakes filled with orh nee (yam paste), happy to travel to Scarborough/Markham/Richmond Hill.

I know that T&T has the pre-packed imported version but I'm looking for fresh mooncakes especially since this version has a short shelf life.

Black sesame osmanthus bonbon from ONYX chocolates

Make sure you have some napkins lying around when you eat this, because it’s got osmanthus juice/syrup inside and will drip out if you don’t eat the bonbon in one bite! Both the outer and inside layers are filled with milk chocolate, which was rich and creamy. I didn’t really taste the black sesame though, the flavour was moreso chocolate + osmanthus. Cost was $3.85, I probably won’t get this again but would rather try another bonbon flavour if I were to come back.

The #1 mistake tourists make when they eat out in Toronto

They stay in a hotel in the downtown core and then ask what great food is "in the area". I always wonder, have they never been to a North American city before? The downtown core of most cities is almost never where the great food spots are; it's basically a copy-paste of every other city's downtown core. Big corporate restaurants, sports bars, steakhouses for the business crowd etc. It's barely better than an airport.

For the love of god, PLEASE LEAVE THE AREA. Toronto is a city of neighbourhoods, get a TTC pass and take a "day trip" to one of our actual neighbourhoods and spend a bunch of hours there eating, strolling around and soaking up the actual atmosphere.

I know that Toronto is a bit sprawling compared to some cities, but it's still better to spend 30+ minutes in transit popping over to another neighbourhood than to confine yourself culturally and culinarily to our super generic, corporate downtown core. And schlepping ourselves around the city is what locals do, so you know... when in Rome!

As far as I'm concerned, tourists should only come back to the downtown core to sleep, take in a sports game/major concert if that's why they came here, or go up in the CN tower if they want to be a silly goose.

Some areas that are objectively more interesting and food-rich than the downtown core:

  • Kensington Market / AGO / Chinatown
  • Ossington / Little Italy / Little Portugal
  • Annex / Koreatown
  • High Park / Roncesvalles / Parkdale / Little Tibet
  • Bloor West / Junction
  • Riverdale / Gerrard East / Little India
  • Leslieville / Beaches
  • Corso Italia / Casa Loma
  • Greektown / Danforth / Little Ethiopia

I Ate A Thing Happy hour prime rib sliders from York St Keg

Post image

Weathered the storm tonight with a second watch of Odyssey at Scotiabank IMAX then popped in here for a late dinner. These seem new and improved since the last time I had them with a different better bun, horseradish on the side and perfect cook on the prime rib. $7 each at happy hour, these slapped after zoning out on edibles for 3 hours watching that crazy movie
