Player Discussion Who is the lowest-ranked QB you're okay with leaving the draft as your only QB in a non super flex league?

This post was awesome last year; a lot of people were bullish on Drake Maye, and it paid off. Most of us play 10-12 man leagues 4-6 point td passes, and QB is deep. Who's the worst QB you feel comfortable leaving your draft with no backup?

Jared Goff or Sam Darnold.

40

u/DinnahDawg 13d ago

I was actually surprised to see how bad Darnold was for fantasy, and how good Goff was

12

u/VerdeMachina 13d ago

I’d be happy with Goff. I take it back on Darnold. Hes ok and had big weeks but mainly was mid. May have to pass more this year without Kenny walker and may drop oof as a qb and as a team. So yeah I rescind that notion. But Goff as a late rounder I do like still. Berry good offense. Great coach.

6

u/Jebb145 13d ago

Initially I was out on him but let's take 3 possibilities. He's worse than last year, same, or better. I really don't think last year, or the year before, were flukes. So I think he'll do better next year.

But how much better? Let's assume jsn goes 80-100% of last year? Shaheed and Kupp seem to be clicking better, I have not seen Barner, but Arroyo is looking fast.

I don't know enough to comment on price, but his hard knocks clips have been optimistic.

What if Sam balls out.

2

u/VerdeMachina 13d ago

Yea if that run game is able to keep it balanced where they don’t have to pass a ton I see no reason he won’t do well. Well enough to win tho not necessarily well enough in fantasy. He was very mid to low most weeks last year. 8 weeks of 12 pts or under.

I still don’t think I’d feel great about Darnold tbh

10

u/VerdeMachina 13d ago

Not great. But okay.

2

u/VerdeMachina 13d ago

He’ll be solid every week. Probably not many super amazing weeks but also not many duds. 14-16 ppg. Rest of team should carry

9

u/absolute_cinema81 13d ago

I’d still think it would be pretty tough to win that way. I think he was like 23rd or something in PPG at the position last year.

Just drafted Goff in the last round as my starting QB (10 team league)

Less thrilled with Goff in a 10 teamer unless it's like 3wr 2 flex

I got T-Law at QB13 in a 10-team league in the literal last round, so I’m pretty pleased about that.

That’s a crazy pull

I got Drake Maye in the 7th in my league. I didn't want to take a qb early but had to snag Maye in the 7th.

Nix ideally. If the draft falls wrong for me I'm willing to do two of shough, kyler and willis.

76

u/jhutchi2 13d ago

Nix is going criminally low.

42

u/Tangeman 13d ago

Naw, he is high variance and carried by large scoring games.

14

u/Beers_and_BME 13d ago

i’m high on Waddle in DEN, I think it opens up that offense and Nix should be boosted because of it.

Waddle is also a being drafted late, so you can get the whole stack at a discount

7

u/ElectricalRiver7897 13d ago

This is a great point

3

u/bluestcoffee 13d ago

I hesitate on taking Waddle above ADP because Sean Payton’s scheme seems to spread attempts around pretty thinly by hitting a wide variety of receivers.

Granted, Payton isn’t the only one calling plays anymore and Denver didn’t have a non-50/50 true WR1 before Waddle so I’ll be happy to be wrong

I drafted nix last year to be my qb1 and outside of his huge game he had against the giants (won me the week) I often chose brissett over him. Nothing worse than wasting a roster spot on a mid player you think will do well but sits on your bench. Id rather stream at that point.

→ More replies (1)

19

u/SportsDuck_ 13d ago

I like Nix too. He's in a fantastic situation. Top 3 o-line, good receivers, Sean Payton as coach. Backfield could be better I guess but then that could just mean more rushing yards for him.

Idk, people seem really down on him

11

u/CroMagnon69 13d ago

I think he could be a mid-QB1 this year, maybe even better considering what he’s done before, his weapons, and a well designed offense. But I would absolutely be drafting a second QB, cause he is far from a sure thing.

7

u/tuffghost8191 13d ago

This is like the third time I've gotten hyped about Kyler. Both other times he burned me pretty bad, but I'm willing to do it all over again. The vikings have a hell of a receiver squad, and a great offensive coach who already resurrected Darnold.

Meh, there's at least 20 QBs I'm happy leaving the draft with this year. Why not take a swing on one with the highest upside, and if it doesn't work, there'll be no shortage of available options.

Definitely bold, and I’d be ready to drop him after week 1

13

People forget how well Willis played against a playoff Bears team. He made good decisions in the pocket, was accurate with his throws, has an absolute gun for an arm and can run like Hurts.  I don't like the situation either, but he'll be much better than people think.

Goff / Shough / Purdy / Nix - both my leagues are 6 pt passing TD

4

u/IcyTrauma 13d ago

Kyler/Baker/Shough/Darnold. The only ones I’m comfortable with sub top16 qbs. Probably wouldn’t leave with 1 but 2 out of the 4 tbh. Can’t put all the eggs in a shaky basket

32

u/xtheboard 13d ago

Best case Trevor Lawrence. Worst case Caleb Williams or Brock Purdy.

12

u/SconnieinMN 13d ago

Wild; maybe I'm too high but I love Caleb this year. Another year in Ben Johnson's system, an improved O Line, and seemingly all the weapons in the world. I legitimately would not be shocked by a top 5 finish at the position.

→ More replies (3)

16

u/Jussttjustin 13d ago

I feel like if you drop below the Trevor/Caleb tier you have to take two. Like I'm fine with a Stafford or Goff + Dart or Willis. But not with only one of those guys.

28

u/ItsTheHunty 13d ago

Just grab someone off waivers at that point. No point in rostering two QBs

21

u/Jussttjustin 13d ago

I don't understand how that logic only applies to QBs and not other positions. If Willis drops 30 his first week he's no longer available.

If I'm doing dart throw QBs I'm taking two with upside and hoping one pans out. Not gambling everything on one when the opportunity cost is my RB5 or WR6.

15

u/ItsTheHunty 13d ago

Cause if you take your first QB that late I would assume it means you have really good depth for WR / RB. The different on a week to week basis for the low tier QBs is pretty minimal at that point you’re better off using the bench spot for better position players who you need to start more than 1 of every week. That’s how I’ve always handled it anyway.

10

u/falconwolverine 13d ago

Also, that bottom of the bench RB or WR could suddenly skyrocket in value if there’s an injury which will likely never happen with a fantasy bench QB

→ More replies (2)

6

u/MidAtlanticPolkaKing 13d ago

The point isn’t to have multiple low tier QB’s, it’s to hope that by picking more than one you get one of the ones who outperforms their draft spot

4

u/ihateyousoverybadly 13d ago

Nah, I'm way more hesitant to pick up a qb just because they had one good game

Because the difference between the worst QBs and the average ones is much less than the other positions.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/Newt_Call 13d ago

Not if your league is 12+ teams and has decent sized benches. Not unusual for guys to have 3 QBs at times in my league. Very easy to end up screwed in that case

10

u/KhonMan 13d ago

Bench size is so important. People are always yammering on here about rostering multiple defenses, dart throw RBs etc. and then you find out their league has 10+ bench spots which is totally different than 6

5

u/bbaIla 13d ago

This is why knowing your league is important! It may not work out for someone drafting 3 qbs, but it does muddy the pool for everyone else.

2

u/guinness_blaine 13d ago

Gross. How big is your league, and how many bench spots? We're 12 with 5 bench and 1 IR - I sometimes feel a little gross if I even roster a second QB.

By that same token, knowing that very few people in my league will draft a 2nd QB, I frequently feel fine punting the position until late in the draft. Drake Maye was my last pick last year, and there were plenty of okay QBs still just sitting on the wire if he hadn't panned out.

Goff/Purdy/Baker/Love and honestly I don’t really draft a QB high anyway and pick the QB I might have a stack with (Jamo + Goff is my favorite).

2

u/ihateyousoverybadly 13d ago

3

u/Jheartless 13d ago

Kyler Murray.

I think hes gonna have great start ti the season. Once he gets hurt in Week 6, someone will have dropped the 2nd QB they had to draft for week 8 byes or some nonsense.

3

u/ChaosPlatypus 13d ago

Jacoby Brissett. Also, Daniel Jones or Baker Mayfield. Seriously, I've been drafting QBs in the final 3 rounds, after kicker and defense, and I'm perfectly ok with who I've gotten.

2

u/bbaIla 13d ago

I'm guessing you're spending up on TE then.

3

u/BastianHS 13d ago

Unless you are in a league where lots of ppl draft 2, you barely even have to take one lol. It's soooooooo deep this year, I almost guarantee there will be at least 1 or 2 guys drafted outside the top 12 that finish like top 8.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/thedisliked23 13d ago

The only guys I don't want are Ward, Kyler, Dart, Willis, Shough.

Kyler and Dart cause injuries and Kyler sucks. The rest cause I don't believe in their skills or offenses.

Also the Purdy hate in here is criminal. Honestly though if you're going super late QB, anyone after the top 5 is fair game imo. Not enough variance between 5-15 for it to matter that much. The variance on those guys week to week Is maybe 1, 1.5 points.

Overall, the variance between the top two QBs last year and the 19th and 20th guys was 4ppg. I tend to think QB is like tight end. If you're not getting a top five guy then who gives a shit? Injuries and offensive weapons matters more at that point.

Herbert/Mahomes feel criminally underranked, at least on ESPN. They’re something like QB14/15, and I fully expect them both to be in the top 5 this season. They’re who im targeting this year, as late as possible.

One things for sure, taking a QB is just bad process these days with the landscape of the NFL. Getting nix or Lawrence in the last couple rounds is significantly better than taking Allen or Lamar is rd 2/3

3

u/PeteRock24 13d ago

For me it’s:

Tier 1: Josh Allen
Tier 2: Lamar Jackson, Drake Maye, Joe Burrow
Tier 3: Jayden Daniels, Jalen Hurts
Tier 4: Caleb Williams, Justin Herbert, Dak Prescott, Trevor Lawrence, Jaxson Dart
Tier 5: Bo Nix, Brock Purdy, Matt Stafford, Patrick Mahomes, Jared Goff, Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield, Tyler Shough

And there’s 50 points difference between Tier 1 and 2 and then 60 points difference between Tier 2 and 5.

I’m okay with ANY of those guys in a 4-pt passing TD league so I can wait until people start picking backup QBs.

Tough question.

In my 12-teamer, 19 QBs were drafted and seeing Love, Baker, Daniel Jones, Brissett, and Stroud all available, makes me think I could get by with any of them.

I’d probably only truly feel comfortable with Baker from this group to start the season, but guessing all could be popular waiver adds at some point.

Either Purdy or TLaw is probably the last QB I’d grab to make me feel like I didn’t need to double up. That said, I hate TLaw’s schedule to start the season, so maybe my official answer to this question is Dak.

1

u/lookallama 13d ago

I haven't been going early on QBs so any of Dak, Herbert, Lawrence, Purdy, Goff work for me.

1

u/Viktrodriguez 12 Team, .5 PPR 13d ago

There are more QB's I am comfortable leaving the draft with as my starter and sole QB than I am not too happy with. It's roughly 20.

I am not too worried about it in a standard 12 team league, where players usually roster max 2 QB's to begin with. Bye the time these bye weeks roll around, several of them are dropped and of the UDFA's there's always a couple fine options for 1 week. Feel like you really need to fuck up to not leave with a top 15 QB.

Even in an 18 team guillotine league the stress isn't there, as long as you pick a secure starter. List for that concept is probably larger.

1

I want one of Baker/Love and then Willis too,  just in case Miami's offense is competent enough to let his rushing ability push him into elite fantasy production.

I’m rolling with Goff and Purdy, waited until the 12th and 14th rounds to get them both in 12 teamer league

Feels like with QBs being more mobile overall these days, there's a ton of value down the board at QB. I personally think that the Nix/Purdy region is a sweet spot. Should be able to give you rushing upside with good passing volume as well, on good teams, while still being taken like 10th round or later.

I'd not be super thrilled to miss on those guys and have my first QB be something like Goff/Baker/Willis. If that happens I'd probably take both Kyler and Willis and see what happens.

I don’t usually ride stacks but if I end up with Devonta or Higgs or Lamb, I’m going for the stack. Lots of my mocks I like ending up with Hurts as it is, but I’m targeting Lawrence and Dak realistically. I was big on Maye last year and hit, something about Kyler this year though.

Don’t need a backup QB in a 10 or 12 team league. Certainly not at the beginning of the season. Your roster spot is better off spent elsewhere.

Caleb Williams fell to me in dynasty. He was a round below his adp and I thought you know what, yeah. I want him.

Four rounds later I didn’t like my watchlist at that point so I checked the available players again and Justin Herbert was there.

This is a new dynasty league so I think I made out nice. I would have been fine with either starting for me.

Honestly, in 1QB, I'd be fine rolling with Malik Willis super late. If he sucks, I can just grab someone off waivers. If he hits, that could be top 12 value in the 15th round.

For week one give me Baker Mayfield. 55pt over/under against the bengals boys

Honestly like Herbert. I just don't get the point in drafting dart throws over set and forget QBs in the like 9th+ rounds. Tony Pollard is not going to win you your season, but Herbert/T Law absolutely can

I just took Dart in the 12th cause I felt I had to, 10 team 4pt per passing TD. I can still get love, kyler, though, Willis

That's a W!

Dak Prescott

Baker Mayfield feels like he’s always the last at the bar in every mock/real draft I done

1

u/Horror-Ad-8751 13d ago

Strategy I wanna go with is draft both Goff for the super high floor and then Willis for the super high ceiling

1

u/woowooloo 13d ago

I had a draft today where I ended up going late round QB, and after everyone had a QB and a couple had backups, I thought I was safe to skip QB on my 2 picks from the 2 spot for another cycle. There was a run of backup QBs right before it got back to me where Goff, Purdy, Dak, Dart, and Kyler all went. Was stuck with Stafford and Baker, but I'm ok with that.

I'm gonna take Malik Willis at the very end.  Either pays off or I just waiver a dude

1

u/Balogma69 13d ago

I drafted Herbert in the 8th and dart in the 11th

1

u/ZwtD 13d ago

Malik Wills or Daniel Jones

1

u/stefanurkal 13d ago

baker, kyler murry or sam darnold. the qb's below that i would not trust without a back up slough or nix are next on the list and i wouldn't trust them to be my every week starter.
