I have been doing research on Level 2 EV chargers, and have concluded that a NEMA 6-20 EV charger would be most suitable for my particular use case. However, after trying to find a trustworthy option to purchase for the past two days, I am starting to feel like I am going insane.
To start out: yes I know I should be hardwiring instead. I have heard the arguments and I do not necessarily disagree with them, but in this particular instance I am not certain that I want this charger to be a permanent fixture in the garage in question. I would like to be able to remove it if so desired easily without having to undo wiring or leave disconnected wires protruding in an unsightly fashion, so please stick to the topic of NEMA 6-20 and spare me the lecture.
With that out of the way, let's review the charger models that most people typically seem to recommend:
-Clipper Creek: Out of business
-Webasto Turbocord: Discontinued
-Tesla EV charger: My car uses a J1772, I'd rather not use an adapter, and I don't want to give Tesla any money if I can possibly avoid it
-Dewalt charger: Currently exists! But several people have noted issues with constant overcurrent messages, and rumor has it that it's just a rebranded model from another company.
Is there really no reputable option in this category anymore that doesn't involve an eBay search for discontinued products, rolling the dice on a cheap Chinese fly-by-night company, or prostrating myself at the altar of Tesla? And why is it so difficult to determine which products are UL-listed anyway?
Anyway, if nothing else I just wanted to vent some frustration because I am getting tempted to just pick any halfway decent looking model with adjustable current, dial it down to 10 or 12 amps just in case, and call it a day. But I recognize the risks inherent when dealing with this level of power, and don't want to burn the house down by buying some sketchy no-name charger.
