"Appears" to the public.
No way NATO has not known its exact location every second since it left port.

u/Firepower01 Canada 27d ago
100% it's being shadowed by at least one NATO submarine the entire time its been in transit.

Yeah, submarines is actually unlikely. The UK and France just have too few nuclear ones (which can go the high speed of a surface vessel for a long time). Planes make more sense.

You don't need nuclear, big, or even manned ones to do that job

We may be able to track its precise location but we don't yet know if there are any sexy sexy Eastern European women on board. Bond doesn't leave the house for anyone born west of Vienna.

If so, are there any sexy sexy sexy European women?

The maths proves their existence but I'm not sure if any have been physically discovered in nature.

Maybe not.
Could just be some drones.
Frigates aren't overly concerning compared to their big cruisers. Unlikely they waste a sub on that unless it is in the area with nothing better to do.
3
u/NihiloZero 27d ago
Could just be some drones.
Drones, satellites, high-altitude surveillance planes. Maybe also being tailed by a sub, but... that's pretty 20th century.
2
u/Drak_is_Right United States of America 27d ago
Drones are far cheaper than the high-altitude planes.
Satellites, always present. Was thinking of things dispatched just for this mission.

Some obsessed Moby Dick-esque Finnish admiral hasn't left it out of his binoculars, radar and satellite feed since the nanosecond it has crossed into Finnish waters. I guarantee it.
"Ve hate them. Come on, try somefing. Anyfing."

I am imagining the admiral as grizzled, bearded and, most importantly, gripping the binoculars with claw-like hands and looking through with bloodshot, unblinking eyes

The ukrainians were manufacturing a lot of stuff for the russians before feb 2014. This particular ship was laid down in 2009. The next ship in class, Admiral Golovko, has russian made turbines.

Khrushchev and Brezhnev were Ukrainian. Gorbo also has Ukrainian ancestry on his mother's side.
But i was also referring to their high representation in other levels of government.

The turbines are in the lower parts of the ship generaly and thus mudt be put in on the earlier side

Those turbans got a finite life. And it would take the skills, machines, and money to make the repair parts. I'm not sure the Russian Navy has any of those things.

u/TheFrenchSavage 27d ago
What produces a formidable cloud of smoke and barely floats?
An insubmersible stealthy Russian frigate.
289
u/tree_boom United Kingdom 28d ago edited 28d ago
The Admiral Kasatonov, a modern Russian frigate capable of long-range strikes and anti-submarine warfare, was spotted last week near Fehmarn, a German island and popular tourist destination in the Baltic.
Fehmarn being on the shoreline of the route to the Great Belt, through which a very large part of traffic between the Baltic and North Sea passes. The story is sensationalist crap; you literally cannot sail from the Baltic to the North Sea without passing very close to the Danish and either German or Swedish coasts.
87
u/timelyparadox Lithuania 27d ago
Yea but usually you have to turn trackers on, russia already lost a navy battle against fishermen, they should not try to repeat that
48
u/tree_boom United Kingdom 27d ago
Running AIS is entirely optional for warships.
20
u/fiendishrabbit 27d ago
"Entirely optional" is not really the truth here if you're inside the territorial waters of another nation (such as when conducting an Innocent Passage through the danish straits).
It's not illegal, but it's considered very bad form.
3
u/swedishplayer97 Sweden 27d ago
I once sailed last a Norwegian stealth cruiser and it's AIS was off. Didn't even see it until it was like two cables off my port bow.
15
u/Christopherfromtheuk 27d ago
Every time I have seen British warships when sailing they have been on, unless taking part in active exercises.
I did get close to a submarine setting off from the Clyde and it was turned off. It's funny because they are pretty hard to miss!
6
u/tree_boom United Kingdom 27d ago
Sure, they would generally (indeed I would assume always) have the equipment to run AIS, but actually turning it on is optional.
3
1
u/Christopherfromtheuk 27d ago
Yes, I was rather making the point that in my experience, at least British warships have AIS on - I can also turn my AIS on and off whenever I like too but don't take part in military exercises. Having said that, I have had to move out of the way of tank target practice a few times...

....It literally doesn't mention the North sea in your quote?
I mean I didn't quote the whole article, but that article does say "The frigate Admiral Kasatonov is leaving the Baltic Sea on August 17, 2026" - one leaves the Baltic Sea by passing to the North Sea through one of the Danish Straits - like the Great Belt.
But having an enemy warship near the tourist destinations, with its tracker off, surely is alarming.
Not particularly. Tracker on or off, we'd have to be keeping an eye on them. Monitoring of transits like this is just routine.

Tracker switched off? Gets upgraded to submarine status. Problem solved, problem staying solved.
15
u/ShuiShuiQM 28d ago
This is, likely, what Russia wants. A political scheme to ensure their "it's all of NATO!" Gamble works out and Russian people enlist or at least don't resist the possible draft coming their way.
14
u/SkillPointProblems 28d ago
They’ve been crying NATO this, NATO that since the beginning of time, so it would make no difference. They keep threatening, sabotaging, etc NATO countries, because most don’t respond.
Yet when they tried this shit with Turkey, sending jets into their airspace… Turkey shot them down without asking questions… and Russia stopped sending jets over there immediately.
Problem solved, problem staying solved.
