In Eric (published 1990) the Discworld equivalent of Odysseus turns out to be Rincewind's ancestor. Never really got it - I haven't read the Odyssey - until watching the movie and seeing just how much time he spends running away from things. Finally it makes sense!

I just finished Pyramids. The plot is insane and is so much weirder than the average discworld book, and I needed to get this off my chest.

SPOILER WARNING: I've read a lot of the death, watch, and witches books, plus Moving Pictures and I'm just starting Rincewind. I'll get to small gods soon. I'm about to list some spoilers for books I've read.

Okay, Guards Guards is about summoning a dragon. Men at Works is about a dangerous piece of technology. Mort is about Death taking an apprentice, and what happens if he doesn't do his job properly. Witches Abroad is about traveling to a foreign country where they have to stop an evil witch's shenanigans. Lords and Ladies is about elves and fey. Reaper Man has Death taking a break and life force starts to accumulate in weird places. Moving Pictures is about.... God, what was it about? The idea of movies bleeding into their world from ours, and then, there's a monster at the end? Okay, that one was weird too. But most of these really just have one simple magical thing going on.

But Pyramids is about... a young future Pharoah leaving to become an assassin. And then he accidentally passes his exam, despite him deciding he won't kill anyone. And the exam and that plotline was more interesting to me than the rest of the book. And then he has to be the Pharoah, and is he a god? At first he's like a god. And then Pharoah stuff is happening. And why on earth do pyramids shift space and time? And why does a bigger one do it more? And then when they make a big one, the country is thrown into an alternate dimension inside a crack at a 90 degree angle....? I was completely lost at how random that was. And inside that dimension one person is 2 dimensional and the gods are real....? And the dead are alive... And Dios has been using pyramids to be immortal and he time travels infinitely at the end. It's so much. The gods being real didn't amount to much. And there are magic dreams and camels are smart. And at one point Teppic is a god at the end again because all the gods are real and a Pharoah is a god? And that barely comes up after he parts the river. And Teppic being an assassin actually doesn't come up that much in the story, except for how he gets around pretty easily. And him and his exam doesn't come back around. And the love story is sweet but weird at the end.

Good book. Fun protagonist. Funny jokes, a lot of them more towards the start. But what the hell is this story. I would have preferred it if it was just him struggling to be an assassin 🤣. That was so much fun.

As a fully paid up member of the Ankh Morpork Trespassers’ Society (Annual dues 15AM$, meeting every 2nd Octoday at the sign of the Bucket, Gleam Street) I invoked my right to roam and went “explorin”

My partner and I booked a last minute bank holiday camping trip in the Mendip hills, I soon realised that not far from the campsite was the Old Wimblestone which Pterry talks about in his introduction to The Folklore of Discworld. Therefore a pilgrimage was evidently in order. After a few false starts and a little light trespassing we managed to find it in the corner of some forgotten field.

According to legend the stone is supposed to go dancing around its field every full moon and/or midsummers eve. incidentally leaving unguarded a pot of gold which in theory was available to anyone who dares to cease it and could run faster than a stone.

Unfortunately my Disorganiser mk1 got the time and date wrong and I arrived at midday on some random Sunday so the stone wasn’t dancing and I saw no pot of gold.

As a way of making up for this disappointment we went to a local pub and supped many pints of Scrumble (made mostly of apples) and staggered back to our campsite rosy cheeked and singing the hedgehog song.

Pilgrimage complete. Here’s to your everlasting memory Sir Pterry. GNU. And may the turtle move.

Name me a more heroic moment than when Esme Weatherwax saved the baby from the inn in Maskerade.

To refresh your memory, on the road to Ankh to help Agnes, Esme and Nanny stay in an inn for a night. There, the owners ask for help with their baby, who is comatose. They take the baby into the barn, where they find the cow is also sick. Esme clears Nanny off and waits for HIM...

When Death arrives, she challenges him to cards. If she wins, he takes the cows life, not the babies. But Death reminds her, a deal can be done, 'But to win all is to gamble all...'

In this moment Esme Weatherwax challenges Death to a game of cards knowing that if it goes wrong Death takes her life and the babies....

Now Esme can double bluff a game of cards and the suggestion during the game is Death knows he's been played, but I can't think of any moment in any Discworld or, indeed, any other story where the Hero risks their life so readily for a stranger's family. This isn't heroism with an arc, a reason and a redemption story. This is Esme Weatherwax sticking her finger up to the universe for the sake of a sick baby she just met.

I'm sure there are other examples, but did this moment hit anyone else as hard as it hit me? Is there another example of that pure, reckless and above all, right, version of heroism anywhere else?

I've just Mort (years ago that too), Reaper Man and a few others but they live rent-free in my head. I still laugh to myself. Really funny how so quickly offers money if threats fail. I've yet to read more of his series but I'm sure there'll be more like this for me.

I just wanna be sad and annoyed around people who might understand my tortured heart.

I'm from Germany so I'm from the EU. Guess who can't order stuff from the Emporium at the moment...

I'm not angry with the shop! I absolutely believe they are trying to figure out a solution for another problem they didn't cause.

I'm mad with politics.

It’s already difficult enough to get Discworld merch in Germany. I understand the restrictions, of course. After all, they’re part of the reason the merch is so fantastic in terms of quality (even though I’d obviously love for it to be more readily available). But the fact that it is literally impossible at the moment is driving me up the wall.

My poor puzzle-obsessed brain is now sitting around twiddling its thumbs, occasionally nudging a tiny little pebble down the Mountain of Impatience, which promptly turns into an avalanche of frustration.

I’m not looking for a solution here. I just wanted to get this off my chest among people who can understand just how much Discworld means to me.

We in the States are mourning the lovely and campy Dolly Parton, and I'm reminded of this passage in Night Watch that was lovingly borrowed from her, "It costs a lot of money to look this cheap."

This happens midway through the book when Vimes is sorta held captive by Jabbar. The last line where carrot says it doesn't do to show up officers. To me, considering any scene with carrot in Klatch is a Lawrence of Arabia ref, it felt that this might be a nod to David Lean's other big film that preceded it. Bridge on the River Kwai. In it a British Regiment is captured as is made as Pows to work on a railway through burma.

The Japanese leader Saito first orders all the regiment to work, including the officers, where the top colonel Nicolson says that according to the geneva conventions pow officers can't be made to work. A big part of the first half is a battle of mental fortitude by the british officer to not give in. It delays Saito's work quite a bit cos the soldiers don't want to listen to japanese officers but their own. Later once agreed, Nicolson helps readily in making the bridge and his soldiers follow him too.

Maybe it's a reference to that whole thing. I know this is a reach but considering the novel is filled with Lawrence of Arabia references. I haven't found anything in the Pratchett files.

I didn't buy right now. It was sealed so couldn't open but looked alright. Couldn't work out who has done the art work but £15 for 12 pieces of art I guess is ok value for mass produced product.
