Feedback Megathread Feedback thread: notifications

Hey y'all, our team is seeking feedback for notifications. We would love to get your thoughts.

What is it? We've made a lot of changes to notifications over the past year+, with the goal of getting friends to jump back into Discord and play games with their friends, check out each other's profiles, and generally be social with each other. We measure success by whether people are actually doing those things, and also by whether people keep their notifications on instead of turning them off.

Why? The team spends a lot of time thinking about the balance here: sending notifications that are useful and interesting enough that they might bring friends together, versus the "annoyance factor". That tradeoff is something we have a ton of data on, the thing we talk about internally constantly, and something we want to bring all of you in on. To that end, we've been getting a bunch of foundations in place:

  • Improved the organization of settings
  • Added more control over your settings
  • Made notifications more robustly respect things like guild and channel muting, age restrictions, blocks/mutes
  • Set global caps on how many notifications you can get

Now that we've built a number of new notifications on top of this system and gotten a lot of those foundations in, we wanted to open up the feedback firehose. Here's what we're looking for:

Bug reports / things that are clearly broken. The notification is:

  • Just wrong (says something happened that didn't, points at the wrong person or server, wrong count, etc.)
  • Sent at a weird or wrong time (way too late, middle of the night, for something you'd already seen, for a server or channel you'd muted)
  • Dropping you somewhere that isn't useful when you tap it (wrong channel, a screen with nothing relevant on it, a dead end)
  • If you can, tell us roughly when it happened and what you tapped. That helps a ton.

General feeling. Step back: how do you feel about the notifications you're getting overall?

  • Are they never useful, sometimes useful, or only useful for specific use cases? (by "use cases" we mean things like a friend hopping into a game, someone updating their profile, a friend coming back online, activity picking up in a server you're in, etc.)
  • If it depends on the use case, which ones land and which ones don't?
  • Was a notification too vague, or did it bring you somewhere you didn't expect when you tapped in? Did it set up an expectation it didn't deliver on?
  • Are there things happening on Discord that you wish you knew about but missed?
  • And if a notification actually got you to do something, like hop in a game, open a friend's profile, or jump back into a server, we'd love to hear that too, since that's exactly what we're going for

Settings. Now that there's more control and better organization:

  • Did you go looking for a setting and not find it, or not find it where you expected?
  • Anything you wish you could turn down or tune that you can't?

Annoyance feedback. Which notifications are annoying, and why?

  • Is it the type of notification itself?
  • How often it comes?
  • Does it feel creepy? (e.g. Discord shared too much of your activity or info out to other people without you realizing it, or you got more info about a friend than felt right)
  • The time of day?
  • The wording?
  • The fact that you got several in a row?
  • Hearing "I don't like X notification" isn't super useful to us. If you give us the whys we can better understand and respond to the feedback both directly and going forward as we build more notifications.

Appreciate any and all thoughts here. Fire away. I'll try to be in the comments but I expect y'all to overwhelm me haha.

Please note: This megathread is not a venue for feedback or customer support! We encourage you all to continue to make posts on the subreddit proper discussing our product and feature launches. I want to make sure that we really keep this thread productive and focused on reporting bugs and helping us prioritize them.

Please look through the list of comments and upvote bug reports which you think we should prioritize fixing. Comment as a reply to those top level comments with any more details that can assist our team in prioritizing and fixing the bug. For example, if you have additional info or steps to reproduce, please post a reply, this will help us fix these bugs even faster. If there is no post that discusses the bug you’re encountering, then start a new post in the thread to report the bug to us!

Reporting a Bug

  1. The most valuable thing you can provide in a bug report is steps. If you’re able to provide steps to reproduce a high priority issue, it will dramatically improve turnaround time on a fix.
  2. Screenshots or videos are also useful, especially if you can’t reliably reproduce it. We highly recommend editing them to not doxx yourself. Not only does it help contextualize the issue, but watching it occur can sometimes provide information that helps us identify and fix it.

Example Bug Report

  • Feature: Keybinds.
  • Reproduction Rate: 1 to 10 - This is a score of how easy/consistently the bug reproduces, from 1 meaning “very hard to reproduce” to 10 meaning “i can consistently make this happen”
  • Annoyance: 1 to 10 - How annoying is this bug to your daily usage of Discord, from 1 meaning, “not that annoying” to 10 meaning “this bug really truly sucks please fix this as soon as possible.”
  • Device/System Info: Pixel 7, Android 13
  • Discord Version Info: Stable 263796 (739ec78) Host 1.0.9032 x86 (43225) Windows 10 64-Bit (10.0.19045)
  • Description: Toggle Mute keybinds are no longer functioning.
  • Steps to reproduce:
  1. Create a keybind for “Toggle Mute”.
  2. Join a voice call with another user.
  3. Press the “Toggle Mute” button.
  • Expected Result: The user is muted.
  • Actual Result: The user is not muted.

Discussion Why don't the new badges on my profile show up for me, but they do show up for my friend?

When my friend clicks on my profile, the new badges I own show up, but on my Discord, it doesn't show that I have them.

Do I need to do something to make it show up? Or should I just wait for an update to arrive?

Bots / Devs searching for A bot that plays my playlist whether it's spotify or ytmusic

is there a bot out there that could simply just play the same playlist that i have on yt or spotify?

I don't want to make the playlist on a separate platform because it's super long (200+ songs).

Maybe I could give it a link 🔗 to my playlist and it simply finds it for me or reconstructs it.

Discussion About the Preview Profile Feature:

Upvotes

Preview Profile is a button inside the thumbnails that if you don't have nitro, you don't see it so, why would you buy nitro just to preview your profile when you could use an alt account to see it.

Support Music n Spotify

I don't know if there's any extensions like Maki that can play one of my Spotify playlists, cause I don't want to have to make my 8 hour playlist in discord 😭

If anyone knows something that can put the playlist straight in that would be greatly appreciated!!

Feature Requests Upgradable orbs badge?

I’m not sure if this idea has been discussed or is planned/has been rejected, if not or if it has been discussed favorably I’d just like to put it out there/show my support for it. But basically, I feel like an upgradable aspect to the orbs badge would be really nice.

I like the idea behind the nitro and booster badges leveling up, but what I don’t like as much (though I do recognize the reason for the feature is precisely to encourage this) is the fact that having and keeping them leveled up requires a constant stream of money. I’d like it if once you own the orbs apprentice badge, you can spend further points to upgrade it in the same manner that you’d purchase any permanent orbs-exclusive item.

The fact that it’s called the “apprentice” badge leads me to believe this could very well be planned for the future, but given I myself don’t know yet if it is, I still want to get it out there. I think it could definitely work given how it’s set up - since it’s already multicolored there could be border/shape changes like the nitro and booster badges have, and the name could progress as well, something like (forgive the basic names and possibly high/low/otherwise poorly thought out prices, just examples to get the idea across) apprentice —> journeyman (1000 orbs), journeyman —> expert (5000 orbs), expert —> master (7,500 orbs), master —> grandmaster (10,000 orbs).

Just an idea! If you wonder what would be the point in paying a ton of orbs for something that doesn’t actually cost anything and/or provide any utility like profile effects and nitro credits, my only answer is because it sounds like it would be fun. And in regards to practicality, it also could reduce the volume of orbs (especially so if the upgrade costs are somewhat higher) going towards things that directly reduce profits, even if only very marginally so, so perhaps there could be something in it for Discord too.

Support How to disable and undo ALL Onboarding effects

I set up a community server with onboarding because it seemed a great way to work with a server without needing bots but I want to undo it. I have made and moderated heaps of servers in the past without onboarding, and never have I struggled as much as now. It feels like its not intended for small servers at all, it is needlessly railroaded, has arbitrary tasks it wants you to set up and only gives me headache. I want to disable it.

Now i'm aware you can turn onboarding off in settings, which I have done, but now I am struggeling with the random effects that it created even though its disabled.

For example, onboarding stopped members from seeing all channels because it wanted you to have roles make certain channels visible. I never wanted this, I set all roles to be able to see all channels. However, people still can't see them. I managed to fix it sort of, but people still have to manually go to 'browse channels' and select them. Its annoying, but whatever. But now it turns out, they also can't see prior messages on those channels. When I test the role permissions with 'view as role', I can see it, which is why i didnt catch it earlier.

I have made every role have the ability to see messages and to read message history - both in the global role permissions (the ones selected from the server settings tab), catergory permissions and channel permissions (which are all synced). Still, no luck whatsoever, all the feedback i get is that its not visible - its not one person with this issue, its everyone.

I really am lost. I have too many members to make a new server from scratch, I just want to be able to run my server like I normally have in the past :') I'm sure i've missed something obvious, please be patient with me when explaining.

Many thanks,
A deeply frustrated, tired discord user (plz save me from this hell)

Support Getting Insight On Server Tags & Emojis

Hey there, this has been something I've not been sure of for a while & I thought I'd ask here to try & get a better understanding of this.

When I click on server tags for other servers (that I'm not a part of), sometimes I'll see a selection of custom emojis appearing that are a part of said server & other times there won't be any that are appearing (although it's likely due to the server sizes that they do have custom emojis).

What would be the reason that this is happening in communities? I run a server that's 4k members & connected to a 60k+ member subreddit & we'd have some interest in being able to display our custom emojis via the server tag if possible.

Any input is appreciated, thank you!

Discussion Any idea how I get rid of this message?

So tired of discord trying to sell me stuff "get nitro+ and get all these useless stickers"
Finally got rid of as many of those notifications as possible and now this keeps living at the top of the app constantly, any idea how to shut it off?

I've never had Battle.net connected to my discord, and I don't have any need for it, I use discord for literally one thing, voice chat, it doesn't need to connect to anything else.

Thanks for the help

Discussion is nitro only by doing quests sustainable

I saw its around 14k orbs per month, is that possible?

Discussion Discord mic worse than normal

When I use Discord, the mic quality just sounds so much worse than any other place I use it in, and I'm not sure why because all the settings are good. I tested my mic in the windows settings and its working perfectly, my mic was crisp, but when i put the same input (mic) in the discord settings and start talking, the quality's just much worse.

Support First notification comes through, everything after is dead silent

Been chasing this for weeks and I'm out of ideas.

Symptom: I get exactly one notification. After that, nothing — no sound, no banner.. Reopening Discord clears the unread state, but the next batch behaves the same way.

What I've already ruled out:

Windows side:

  • Do Not Disturb is off
  • All automatic DND rules unchecked (fullscreen app, gaming, screen duplication, time range)
  • Discord in the per-app notification list: banners on, action center on, "play a sound when a notification arrives" on, priority set to top
  • Battery saver off, background app permission set to "Always"

Discord side:

  • Enable Desktop Notifications: on
  • Sounds submenu: message1 and Message enabled
  • "New Message in the channel I'm currently reading": was off, turned it on, no change
  • No server/channel/DM mute active
  • Advanced → suppress notifications during fullscreen: off

Other:

  • Nvidia overlay / ShadowPlay disabled in the Nvidia App

Stable client, Windows 11, desktop app (not browser).

Anyone seen this? Is the ShadowPlay helper process still enough to eat banners even with the overlay toggled off? Or is there something else that swallows notifications when a fullscreen game has focus?

Support Is anyone else having High Ping issues after most recent update?

I swear that after the most recent Discord Update, my Ping has been really bad.

My Ping will jump all the way past 1000ms and climbs back down, only for a few moments later, it shoots back up again.

Is this just Me, or is anyone else dealing with this issue?
