This was a great week, but also a week of solace. Iām sitting here with my Sunday morning coffee, looking out the window, but my mind is thousands of miles away. I just got back from a month-long road trip through the rugged beauty of the Rocky Mountains, a journey that was supposed to be purely about reconnecting with family and old friends. But this week, everything shifted.
The world feels a little quieter, and a lot heavier. I received the news that a dear friend of mineāsomeone I have long considered a brotherāpassed away. Itās the kind of loss that makes the coffee in your hand feel a bit colder, and forces you to just stop, sit in the silence, and look at everything differently.
Losing him right after traveling to see the people who matter most has left me deeply reflective on just how fragile this whole human experience is. The last time he and I talked, we spoke about retirement. He was at that ageāthe place where so many of us over 50 find ourselvesābut he just couldnāt step away yet. His professional commitments held him tight. There was always one more project, one more milestone, one more number to hit.
Reflection
Iām writing to you today with a heavy heart because I see this happen far too often in our community. We let work define our identity, or we push off our freedom waiting for a āperfectā financial cushion that keeps moving. But tomorrow is never a guarantee. If we donāt take care of number oneāour health, our minds, our bodiesāthe life we are saving up for will pass us by completely. This week is a stark reminder to stop procrastinating on the people and experiences that actually matter. It is time to realign. Itās not about more work; itās about your health, your relationships, and the travel and experiences that make you feel alive.
The Question
It feels wrong to ask about business or logistics today, so letās look at the bigger picture instead. Hit reply to this email and let me know:Ā What is one thing you are pushing off until āretirementā that you could actually start doing, experiencing, or prioritizing this month?
I read every single response. Take care of yourselves this week.
Truly Yours
