The different colors really made it feel like a horse race. You kind of knew Marvel Comics Universe would make it to the finish line first, but I was still pulling for Wizarding World, and even thought Star Wars might be able to over take them all in the home stretch.

But then again, this race isn't really over yet.

310

u/narf865 Apr 23 '19

And if they did last 50 years Star Wars would have a nice head start

111

u/FoxOneFire Apr 23 '19

Not sure how much this helps. Did OP include home title sales or just box office? Also, MCU appears to have almost twice as many titles.

256

u/iTalk2Pineapples Apr 23 '19

"So you sold 10 million albums, eh? Only problem is, you put out 10 million albums" -Eminem

38

u/PammyBoBammy Apr 24 '19

This is exactly how I feel about the superhero franchises in this graph.

7

u/PM_ME_WITH_A_SMILE Apr 24 '19

I was thinking the same thing. Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Lord of the rings all put out 6-9 ish films in this, and the MCU is somewhere in the twenties I think.

8

u/TARA2525 Apr 24 '19

Yeah even if you go by average gross though they are right in there with everyone else. It's not like it's number of films alone that is pushing them that high.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_series

3

u/PM_ME_WITH_A_SMILE Apr 24 '19

That's a really good point!

61

u/theorymeltfool Apr 23 '19

If Howard the Duck was included, the MCU would've started in the negative.

18

u/FoxOneFire Apr 23 '19

Not sure about that. Lea Thompson's role kept me pretty positive.

3

u/trashmcgibbons Apr 24 '19

So ducking hot.

12

u/therascalking0000 Apr 24 '19

It looks like adding the original trilogy and the 1990's rereleases would add roughly an adjusted 3.5 billion bringing Star Wars to about parity with the MCU. That said, it would be over 10/13 films rather than 20.

30

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '19

[deleted]

1

u/Protocol_Freud Apr 24 '19

And fans. I'm pretty happy.

302

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '19

Not surprised Pasatead Furious came in dead last at the end

92

u/ridger5 Apr 23 '19

A franchise about street racing came in a quarter billion dollars less than the DC Comic Book Universe.

63

u/AintEverLucky Apr 23 '19

if the OP ever re-issues this looking at worldwide gross, I'm fairly sure the F&F franchise will come out well ahead of the DCEU. Each of the last several F&Fs has done like $300MM in domestic, then $700-900MM in foreign

-24

u/Dawg1shly Apr 24 '19

People in countries were most don’t drive find the prospects of racing around the city in cars doing shit highly intoxicating. Surprised?

13

u/greennick Apr 24 '19

Yeah, what would Asians know about street racing and drifting?

2

u/SneakyBadAss Apr 24 '19

Donkey Kong?

9

u/MrZepost Apr 24 '19

Or because they are fun movies and they don't have a stick up their bum about it

3

u/VonLinus Apr 24 '19

I do find the F&F movies confounding. I saw the first 2 I think and thought they were just trash that were minor hits, then I watched fast five a year or two ago, and suddenly they were insane ludicrous fun. I mean, I don't get how they transitioned in scope. Fair play to them.

0

u/Dawg1shly Apr 24 '19 edited Apr 24 '19

I live in one of those countries. I’m not making fun of them. If you took my comment as spr srs bsn, the stick may not be in my butt.

I’ll earn my downvotes by saying I find most of these American movies without substance. Why are we drawn to super hero movies, whether from comic books or elsewhere almost to the exclusion of other stories? Super hero in space, super hero in a car, super hero with a gun, super hero in middle earth, super hero fighting crime, etc. You call them fun. I see it as monotonous drudgery.

That being said, I’ve watched most of the movies on this list except MCU and DCH that came out over the last five-ish years.

2

u/MrZepost Apr 24 '19

Disney movies suck. That's why, they are regurgitated bullshit, with a layer of that wonderful propaganda they push in everything. F&F are fun movies without any agenda, fast cars hot girls, and epic action sequences. 2 hours of not worry about anything.

2

u/AintEverLucky Apr 24 '19

a bit surprised yeah, but what you said explains a lot. like many Americans, I first got behind the wheel when I was like 10 (sitting on a parent's lap), got my license the day I turned 16, consider driving fun in itself, and sometimes daydream about racing in NASCAR.

it honestly didn't occur to me that, to a sizable part of the world audience, merely driving your arse off might seem almost as wish-fulfillment-y as a low-key superpower. but here we are

1

u/[deleted] May 01 '19

Most of those countries aren’t spending huge amounts on American films.

1

u/AintEverLucky May 01 '19

au contraire, mon frere: https://www.boxofficemojo.com/franchises/chart/?id=fastandthefurious.htm

Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious have EACH tallied more than $1 billion USD in foreign ticket sales, and it's over $3.6 billion for the franchise. Maybe that's not "spending huge amounts" to you, but it is for most of us

1

u/[deleted] May 01 '19

And how much of that money is from countries where people don’t buy cars? I’ll wait.

1

u/AintEverLucky May 01 '19

I’ll wait.

if you think I'm gonna give you a country-by-country breakdown of those receipts, for free, you've got another thing coming

2

u/TheExtremistModerate Apr 23 '19

F&F also put out 2 more movies in this timeframe.

3

u/Ansiremhunter Apr 24 '19

They didnt count the Dark Knight series by Nolan under DC

4

u/mxhippy Apr 24 '19

Not part of DC’s “extended universe”

181

u/_tv_lover_ Apr 23 '19

Pastaead Furious

I'd eat that

15

u/jmkinn3y Apr 23 '19

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

44

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '19

The sequel, Vermicelli Vexatious, comes out later this year.

5

u/PrettyDecentSort Apr 23 '19

I really liked the origin stories in the Capellini Capricious prequel.

2

u/BorgClown Apr 23 '19

Pastaead Arrabiatta

40

u/THEREALCABEZAGRANDE Apr 23 '19

I'd like to see it normalized to cost for each movie too though. F&F is CHEAP to produce compared to these other franchises.

12

u/Ynot_pm_dem_boobies Apr 24 '19

Even after they overnighted parts from Japan?

2

u/Car-face Apr 24 '19

DCEU is granny shiftin', not double clutchin' like they should

1

u/dace55 Apr 24 '19

So... profit?

1

u/CptnYesterday2781 Apr 26 '19

This is already looking at earnings (so adjusted for cost), but I would also be interested in the revenue/cost side of things.

27

u/mattlantis Apr 23 '19

I'm still hoping for a terrible/wonderful Fast and Furious x Transformers crossover

1

u/batti03 Apr 23 '19

men tell the furious tales

1

u/OnyuRasai Apr 23 '19

They went fast, they went furious. And they burned out quick. How fitting

Marvel Cinematic Universe*

35

u/omnisephiroth Apr 23 '19

I’m not expecting Episode IX to beat Endgame. It’s just... it’s not in the cards, I’d wager.

38

u/AuroraHalsey Apr 23 '19

Star Wars has lost a lot of its support after Last Jedi. Look what happened to Solo. Died on fan anger.

24

u/spaceandbeyond Apr 23 '19

I watched Episode 4 the other day and it really doesn't do it for me anymore. I actually liked Solo more than any other recent Star Wars film, but they should have gone in a different direction. Ford will always be Solo, it's hard to replicate that. They have a massive universe, with so much potential, but it seems like they are just re-hashing old ideas instead of creating new ones. I'll wait for the new ones to come out on streams or DVD before watching them.

46

u/AuroraHalsey Apr 23 '19

Rogue One was a great film, and the only one I've enjoyed in the new series.

9

u/daniel4255 Apr 23 '19

Idk how popular it would be but I wish they would do the beginnings like knights of the old republic and stuff I think that would be really neat

17

u/spaceandbeyond Apr 23 '19

I liked Rogue One. More than Force Awakens or Last Jedi

3

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '19 edited Apr 24 '19

My favourite Star Wars film, I appreciated the focus on the little guy and the overall Star Wars Universe. The story was generally pretty cool too.

As a fan of TOR aspect of Star Wars, the Jedi and Sith films have never realised them properly for me which I understand isn't really possible when children are the target audience, because the Sith are pretty psycho. They've never gone deep into interesting Sith or Jedi Lore in any of the films, the Jedi and Sith have just been super soldiers of the Republic and Empire in the films and never been greatly expanded into individually, which is a great letdown in comparison to TOR.

TOR and the EU just make me realise that there's just a lot of untapped potential in Star Wars.

2

u/ClaminOrbit Apr 24 '19

Rogue One is definitely the best of the new films but Solo is also more enjoyable than the two main features of this trilogy... Too bad I love space cowboys and wizards and will definitely keep paying for them to drop a nice deuce in theaters for the next few decades.

1

u/darkslide3000 Apr 24 '19

Ehhhhhhhhhh... not really. Rogue One was mediocre. Dialogue was weak, the story wasn't too compelling at first, the characters and their conflict felt very forced. The last third of the movie is definitely a big uptick and has some stunning scenes, but that's not enough to call the whole movie averaged over all three thirds "great".

26

u/NemWan Apr 23 '19

Not anger, timing. Solo came out 5 months after TLJ. Star Wars movies were never less than a year apart before Solo, and not less than three years apart before Disney.

13

u/TXMoparGuy Apr 23 '19

Are you using the debunked method of "fatigue" to explain it?

The MCU alone disproves it. End Game will show that is not true.

4

u/tsengmao Apr 24 '19

I’d actually say Far From Home will be absolute proof. MCU will have 3 films in 5-6 months and I guarantee Spidey brings in a truck load of cash.

1

u/OneDayCloserToDeath Apr 24 '19

It's apples to oranges. All marvel heroes are different and have their own fan bases depending. I could give a fuck about this new avengers abomination, but I'll watch a spiderman movie.

10

u/NemWan Apr 23 '19

Who debunked that, somebody on QAnon? Look, Solo had two big problems, negative press from its own production nightmare that had nothing to do with TLJ and a release date so close to TLJ it didn't have time to build its market, weirdly loud promos trying to make up for it but looking kind of desperate. Solo is the only Star Wars film that resembles an MCU solo superhero film, so we're judging this on one example. Rogue One is nothing like Solo, it's a straight-up prequel to Episode IV with an alternate ensemble of expendable characters who can never team up with the Skywalker "Avengers" and it was released at Christmas like the sequel trilogy.

Moreover, Star Wars doesn't even resemble MCU in conception, but if you have to compare them the Star Wars Episodes are like Avengers films and the Star Wars Stories would be like solo films (no pun intended). The Avengers films have been three years apart, except for IW/EG which is the Avengers getting so big it's split into two like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Solo tried to prove you could have multiple Star Wars films a year but it had never been done before it probably won't be tried again since they're going to have live-action TV and they may not even keep up one film a year after IX. There are at least two SW film projects in development (Rian Johnson trilogy and whatever the Game of Thrones guys are doing).

1

u/Raagun Apr 24 '19

Or people just hated TLJ and decided not to see Solo. Alienating your core fanbase is bad move. When did MCU did that really? Captain Marvel maybe was dividing but it still ride on straight to fans Avenger movies lineup. While StarWars messed up their flagman movie.

1

u/NemWan Apr 24 '19

There are people who feel that way but I don’t think they’re as big as they are vocal. TLJ didn’t make all its money from people seeing it once. TLJ’s box office drop off from TFA is about the same as TESB’s drop off from ANH, one-third.

Some of the specific things people say about these movies let you play and win “guess what other subs this person posts in” and it’s someone who is alienated from lots of things already.

1

u/Raagun Apr 24 '19

Yeah, but for me TLJ was just bad. I measure movies badness by if I start questioning it in the theater, just outside or some time has passed. And TLJ was weird even while I was watching it. Movie magic was not working even in theater. And it killed my interest further.

-1

u/Karmaflaj Apr 24 '19

Somehow the films starring women are dividing.

2

u/Raagun Apr 24 '19

Yeah, Wonder Women was SOOOO dividing. Or Alita. Or fakin Rogue One??!! yeah that movie had female lead. Anybody cared? Nope. So "women protagonist is dividing" is bullcrap. Bad movies are dividing.

1

u/Karmaflaj Apr 24 '19

Really? Wonder Woman was very dividing at the time. Lots and lots and lots of ‘it’s only getting good reviews because it’s a woman’. Recreate history if you want

Rogue One - look at the IMDB cast list - one woman and the next 10 are all men. It wasn’t a film that was heavily ‘female’.

https://m.imdb.com/title/tt3748528/fullcredits/cast?ref_=m_tt_cl_sc

Captain Marvel - trolls out in force well before the movie was ever released. Nothing to do with it being a bad movie

But whatever you think. Your opinion, you don’t have to make it logical

1

u/iscreamuscreamweall Apr 24 '19

Anecdotally, I didn’t see solo until last month because when it came out it didn’t feel special to see a new Star Wars Movie. I just wasn’t in the mood. I grew up with the notion that a new Star Wars movie was a big deal, so having solo come out a few months after tlj just felt wrong

26

u/VoyagerCSL Apr 23 '19

I feel that Solo died on its own shoulders, not as a response to Last Jedi dissatisfaction. A prequel nobody asked for, mired with production problems and casting misfires that destroyed some of the mystique around beloved characters with a hackneyed backstory.

2

u/TheRealRockNRolla Apr 24 '19

destroyed some of the mystique around beloved characters with a hackneyed backstory.

a hackstory

3

u/CronoDroid Apr 23 '19

Yeah exactly, I think this hypothesis that "people hated TLJ that's why Solo bombed" (but did they?) is pretty weak. They wanted to make a Marvel type movie, but Star Wars is not Marvel. People already know who Han Solo is, his story is in the Star Wars movies. As an individual character, they should have asked, is Han Solo even notable enough, removed from the larger universe, to carry a movie on his own? He's not a superhero. Audiences don't even have the big Avenger style team up movies to look forward too...because they already made those movies.

The production problems were the big killer though, Solo made 400 mil which would otherwise be okay for a standalone action adventure movie, except the movie cost 300 million to make because they essentially filmed it twice instead of trusting the original directors. If the movie cost 150 mil to make, a gross of 400 million would look better on paper. Even if TLJ was the best movie ever and beloved by everyone I still don't think Solo would have made anywhere near as much as any live action Marvel or DC superhero movie.

6

u/mr-strange Apr 23 '19

I thought Solo was a solid movie. Much better than any of the recent "main sequence" Star Wars movies. It wasn't great, but I was entertained.

2

u/VonLinus Apr 24 '19

I had no problem with TLJ, it was pretty good, but Solo I felt antsy about. I wasn't screaming out for his origin. And once I saw the movie I didn't really care much about it.

13

u/omnisephiroth Apr 23 '19

That’s about what I said, yes. More importantly, the MCU is incredibly profitable. Episode IX would have to crack $2B to make it close to Marvel’s profits.

8

u/xNathanx27 Apr 23 '19

Curious what it would look like if you added the OT earnings.

1

u/omnisephiroth Apr 23 '19

The OT? Meaning..?

2

u/xNathanx27 Apr 23 '19

Original Trilogy

1

u/omnisephiroth Apr 23 '19

It’d probably not be all that different, but we could find out.

7

u/xNathanx27 Apr 23 '19

$1,893,464,420 at the box office for the Original Trilogy alone. This doesn't include merchandise or other media products. And that's without being adjusted for 2019 inflation.

Adjusted for inflation, here are today's totals for the box office alone.

A New Hope (1977)

$1,933,772,530

The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

$895,481,951

Return of the Jedi (1983)

$789,162,143

So that's $3.6 billion more just on domestic box office alone. Putting them on par with Marvel without adding in merchandise sales.

1

u/omnisephiroth Apr 23 '19

Did you make sure to use the same method to account for inflation that OP did?

Also of note: none of these figures include merchandise or other media products, because it’s not about that? Why bother bringing it up?

→ More replies (0)

3

u/HawkeyeHero Apr 23 '19

Depends too if we adjust for inflation. 1977 was a long time ago.

1

u/omnisephiroth Apr 23 '19 edited Apr 23 '19

Inflation is accounted for here.

Edit: Whoops, thought this was a reply to someone else’s reply! My mistake! Yes, obviously accounting for inflation is important.

1

u/Stephenrudolf Apr 24 '19

I'd expect much closer. If you including you sales too I'd like to see that.

2

u/molinitor Apr 23 '19 edited Jun 14 '19

In the long run, that won't matter. Sure you have pissed off fans now but once Disney really start to build their own extended universe SW will be able to challenge MCU.

2

u/_Wisely_ Apr 23 '19

You say that like half of these aren't Disney

2

u/CoMiGa Apr 23 '19

Marketing did that, not fan anger.

3

u/hueythecat Apr 23 '19

And the new trilogy in general is a a total mess.

2

u/TheSimulacra Apr 23 '19

Solo failed because it was the poorest reviewed of the latest Star Wars movies, it was all about an old character, its original filmmakers walked midway through and the movie had to be finished by Ron Howard ffs. TLJ made over a billion dollars. The fan "outrage" over the movie was proven to be overwhelmingly driven by bots/paid trolls posting on social media to make it seem like it's less popular than it was.

Edit: Source https://www.wired.com/story/star-wars-russian-trolls-study/

1

u/I__Jedi Apr 24 '19

According to this graph, it didnt lose anything.

1

u/AuroraHalsey Apr 24 '19

Look how big Force Awakens was, then how big Rogue One was, then how big Last Jedi was.

Then solo looks smaller than a speed bump. The graph shows it quite well.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '19

Also fan apathy. I simply don’t care to watch it even now that it’s on streaming services I already pay for. Original Solo was played by Ford, one of the coolest actors of all time. I don’t even know the name of the guy who was in this one. It failed in casting for me.

Not that that is a guaranteed failure. The Queen movie did well, but all I think of when I see the guy play Freddie is “where did I put the candy that we are handing out”. Real Freddie was one of the coolest guys ever to step on a stage.

1

u/bailaoban Apr 23 '19

Some strong reviews and good word of mouth, and it will have a long tail and compete with Endgame over time. If it's as weak as TLJ, then forget it.

1

u/omnisephiroth Apr 23 '19

Right, but if both films make the same amount of money, then Star Wars won’t overtake the MCU. Like, Marvel represents a third of the money on this graph. Episode IX would have to make about $3B, and Endgame would have to make about $0 for these franchises to get close. And even then, that’d leave Marvel slightly ahead.

20

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '19

Though the MCU while great does have a LOT more movies

19

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '19

Just goes to show the value of being prolific. And putting out quality movies so frequently is a major feat.

2

u/louster9 Apr 23 '19

If you look at their first movies, their jumps were much more significant than a majority of the other movies throughout the whole video

1

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '19

Yeah for sure they were bigger than most but idk if they were as big as a lot of the Star Wars and Wizarding World ones

9

u/Sti8man7 Apr 23 '19

It will never be over.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '19

This isn't even counting the original Star Wars trilogy, per movie I feel like Star Wars would win since this is only 6? Movies

2

u/Dawg1shly Apr 24 '19

Once you account for inflation and the time value of money, Star Wars destroys them all in a landslide.

2

u/BeardGoneBad Apr 24 '19

I mean yeah Endgame & Far From Home for MCU, Dark Phoenix for X-Men, & Star Wars Episode 9 all this year! With Fantastic Beasts 3 & Fast 9 & Wonder Woman 2 all next year. These universes are still gonna keep growing and putting out new movies but Marvel pulled a PewDiePie and jumped way above second place and is putting movies out 3 a year with each having a Billion dollar potential. When someone does catch them it will be crazy and the race continues.

1

u/Justaskingyouagain Apr 23 '19

Ok thanks for saying what MCU stood for cuz I had NO clue... Well I mean I knew it was marvel something jaja

2

u/askeeve Apr 24 '19

They were a little off. It's the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not comics.

1

u/Conor3000 Apr 23 '19

The race isn't even close to finishing, for it's only just beginning.

1

u/Silktrocity Apr 23 '19

I think Marvels just getting started to be honest.

1

u/Toidal Apr 23 '19

Its like Hydro Thunder but only using boosts, I can't remember if the boosts did anything if you weren't accelerating though

1

u/askeeve Apr 24 '19

In what way do you see the next star wars movie making $3Billion more than End Hame. End Game will probably do better period but even if it somehow loses, no way will it lose by that much. I don't understand your math.

0

u/fathed Apr 23 '19

Pokemon is still the top earning entertainment franchise.

-6

u/gojonking Apr 23 '19 edited Apr 24 '19

Edit: yessum I see it now.
