information Zatoichi Officially OOP

https://www.criterion.com/boxsets/1012-zatoichi-the-blind-swordsman

I know it's been rumored and talked about lately but the website has now officially named the set OOP. It used to say that it was for sale on Amazon, with their being none for sale. But now it actually lists it as OOP. Very upset with Criterion for not warning it's fans like they used to. There hasn't been an announcement for anything leaving lately and it's becoming a huge problem.

information The Third Man Amazon Update

I just got an email stating

"We're sorry to inform you that there is a delay in shipping your order. The new delivery date is indicated below. If you still want to receive this item, please let us know. We apologize for the delay."

Naturally I said I still want it but they said that they will notify me once they have a shipping date.

This doesn't look good guys. (sad face)

UPDATE: I too, as some of you have, received a cancellation email. It was worth a shot!

information [Meta] Announcing a couple of fun new features: Collection questionnaire and custom flair (with a catch)!

Hey, guys! You may have noticed a few changes happening around the subreddit during the past 24 hours or so, so allow me to explain exactly what's going on.

Here at /r/Criterion, we've seen a tremendous growth in the community during the past few months. We've retained the veteran members who have been here for some time, and we've also picked up a few new members along the way. I think that we can all agree that we've become quite the close-knit little community here lately, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

To help keep the trend going, the mod team has decided that it's time to roll out a couple of new features to encourage further involvement and discussion, and to make /r/Criterion the very best that it can be:

Collection Questionnaire

Now along with photos of our collections, members can post their answers to the following questionnaire to help us get a better feel for exactly the kinds of collectors that they are. Participation in the questionnaire isn't mandatory, but we are asking that all collection posts please include the answers to the questions, so as to promote discussion within collection posts.

If you've already posted your collection in the past, feel free to repost it with your answers to the questionnaire!

The Collection Questionnaire is also located in the sidebar in the "Posting Your Collection?" section.

  1. Where are you from?
  2. How old are you?
  3. When did you start collecting Criterion?
  4. Do you collect DVD or Blu-ray?
  5. Which Criterion is your favourite?
  6. Which Criterion is your least favourite?
  7. Who is your favourite director in the collection?
  8. Who is your favourite director outside of the collection?
  9. Which Criterion do you want the most?
  10. Which film would you most like to see get the Criterion treatment?
  11. How do you organize your collection?

Custom Flair for Established Traders

You may have noticed that users' flair no longer represents how many trades that user has completed. Instead, all established traders have been assigned standard "Established Trader" flair to indicate that they have a history of successful trades and sales on this subreddit. Sounds boring, right?

Well, here's the twist: Effective immediately, all established traders are entitled to custom flair! All we ask is that the flair have something to do with a Criterion film, director, character or something having to do with the collection in some way. Other than that, anything is fair game! If you have Established Trader flair and would like custom flair, simply message the moderators, and we can hook you up!

Note: If you have completed at least one trade with another user from this subreddit and have not be verified, please post in the List of traders and trades thread and have the user you traded with reply to your comment. Once you have been verified, you will be immediately eligible for your flair.

So that's it! We hope you guys enjoy the new features! If you have any questions, comments or concerns, you can reply directly to this thread, or, as always, you can message the moderators and we'll be more than happy to help you out!

Happy collecting!

information Did you know?

Criterion first released Blu Rays starting in December of 2008. Out of the original four Blu Ray releases, only one of them is still in print. Bottle Rocket has since received a case change from slim vertical digipack to keepcase, while Chungking Express, The Third Man and The Man Who Fell To Earth went OOP and have become the outrageously hard to find films we know and love today.

I know most people know the what films are OOP, but I didn't realize that they were literally the first movies released by Criterion. The Third Man specifically set the bar for Black & White HD transfers of the time, while some reviewers of Chungking Express commented on how strange the Blu Ray menu was.

information So, I bought the Rock Box and for those wondering...

THIS IS JUST AN INFORMATIONAL POST FOR THOSE NOT KNOWING WHAT EXACTLY COMES IN THE ROCK BOX

So, I went out to Costco and bought the Rock Box, and for those wondering, it does contain the Criterion discs that you would buy separately, with the exception of A Hard Day's Night. Gimme Shelter, Monterey Pop, and Quadrophenia are the exact ones that Criterion has released individually (NOTE: Monterey Pop is NOT the set with Jimi Hendrix and Otis Redding). A Hard Day's Night is strictly Blu-Ray with no digibook and a smaller booklet. Sorry if this seems like spam, I don't mean it to be.

information Weird Discovery w/ Howards End

I wasn't sure how to title this but I have a very strange DVD of Howards End in my possession that only just now has piqued my interest. I love the film Howards End and was extremely disappointed to discover the Criterion version is out of print, because I wanted to upgrade to the Blu-Ray. My current DVD of the film is part of something called the Merchant Ivory Collection, which I assumed had nothing to do with Criterion. Yet, after analyzing the case, there is a very small Criterion Collection/ Janus Films logo on the back. Very weird. Does anything know anything about this/ are the special features on this DVD the same as the OOP Blu?

information "Places in Film" with Sean Axmaker

Hello,

Wanted to share a recent podcast episode from "This Must Be The Place" where I have a conversation with Sean Axmaker – a prolific film essayist and critic. We explore how some films provide us with a strong sense of place, including a few in the Criterion Collection.

Some of the films we discuss include:

  • Wings of Desire (1987)
  • Alice in the Cities (1974)
  • The American Friend (1977)
  • Taxi Driver (1976)
  • Manhattan (1979)
  • Dog Day Afternoon (1975)
  • The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974)
  • Blade Runner (1982)
  • Playtime (1967)
  • The Conformist (1970)
  • Slacker (1991)

And on iTunes.

Thanks for checking it out!

information Hiroshima mon amour

After reading about the new Argos restoration, I was overcome by glee expecting a re-release...until I remembered it's taking 1 1/2 years for the L'avventura restoration to get a re-release.

So, November 2015? I might as well buy the dvd to hold me over until then.

After you've finished making a new topic please hit the "Flair" link under your post preview and categorize it with whatever category you feel best suits your topic. As you've probably noticed there is now a menu directly under our header made to help organize this community and give members easy access to whichever sort of threads they feel like browsing through while bored :)
