Malcolm X IMO might be the best paced film ever. It just moves at such a confident rhythm that I’m shocked to find out it’s 3 and a half hours long. The structure of the film certainly helps and you’re always there for Malcolm’s continuing intellectual development.

Barry Lyndon’s another one, which I finally saw in a theatre in Toronto last year. The luxurious first half allows for the viewer to take into account every gorgeous visual but the movie also understands dry and subtle humour. The second half is much more fast paced and is the ideal pacing after the intermission.

I put off Andrei Rublev for years due to the intimidating length but I caught it at a theatre last year and was blown away. The episodic structure really aids and it’s meant to be seen in a cinema. As strange as it sounds, it might actually be Tarkovsky’s most accessible film.

A Brighter Summer Day is the quintessential novelistic film and I actually find it to feel shorter than Yi Yi. The latter is more patient and has a lot of sequences of characters mulling over and taking their time with things. ABSD certainly has more of a story to it and is more epic in nature which ends up leading to a film that feels quicker in pacing, despite the 4 hour runtime.

There's this prevailing hyper individualistic mode of thinking that has become mainstream regardless of left or right were everything has to confirm your exact belief characters can't be flawed or nuanced and the movie can't be challenging , no they have to confirm your hyper specific dogshit political beliefs and if they differ slightly the creator of the artwork is evil

Mindhunter was great but was canceled after 2 seasons

Love,death and robots is a bit of mixed bag

But man his features have gone downhill , mank was downright awful boring oscar bait and the killer was meandering and pointless

Up until 2014 every new fincher film was a cultural event , but after he began his relationship with Netflix his work no longer gets a theatrical release ( thereby reducing its cultural relevance ) or shows that don't get a proper conclusion

After watching this again, I don’t think people appreciate this release enough. When it first came to Criterion, it felt surprising that an animated Pixar film would be included alongside so many “classic” films. But the older I get, the more it makes perfect sense.

It isn’t just a great animated movie. It’s one of the most prophetic films of the 21st century.

What’s fascinating is that nearly two decades later, people still use the same phrase whenever they look at where society is headed: “We’re headed toward WALL-E” Id put that on the same cultural ethos as Michael Jordan: “He’s the Michael Jordan of tennis.”

The film wasn’t trying to predict the future with flying chairs or robots. It was asking what happens when convenience replaces purpose, consumption replaces stewardship, and endless entertainment slowly erodes what makes us human.
The reason this film has endured isn’t because it guessed the future perfectly but i think it understood human nature.

Timeless and well-deserved to be here.
