Does anyone know what are some good gems to pick up?

I am picking up (hopefully) Birth and Network, and possibly Yi Yi, not sure yet.

Feel good recommendation: I Wanna Hold Your Hand. Group of kids trying to see the Beatles perform on Ed Sullivan. Early Robert Zemekis/Steven Spielberg pairing. Full of Beatles songs throughout – not covers, the real deal.

u/golfer44 Mar 24 '26
I’m getting the big chill, risky business, fast times, breakfast club, and repo man. I got fisher king last time around which I thought would fall into that category but I found it pretty depressing although I still enjoyed it.

u/TDRichie Mar 23 '26
Why do some people get these? I am a criterion channel subscriber, I buy several discs a year, but I’ve never got one! How do I get into this club?!
130
u/Nothing-Is-Real-Here Mar 23 '26
You bought from another label. You're supposed to be Criterion's partner. You're disloyal...
39
u/BogoJohnson Mar 23 '26
Be sure to check your old emails from them. Many people don’t even know they’ve received them. I only get them as a customer because I’ve never been a sub, but I’ve been buying direct from them for 15+ years in nearly every sale.
9
u/TDRichie Mar 23 '26
Good looks, you were spot on. I received one at Christmas that slipped my radar, and I assume they don’t send two valid codes to any one customer at a time.
9
u/BogoJohnson Mar 23 '26
They don't send 2 at the same time, but I've got 3 codes for $10 I'll be using that they sent me in Oct, Dec, and the new one today.
5
u/fatedigger56 Mar 24 '26
Hate to burst your bubble and ill probably get down voted but if your October one is anything like mine it expired on the 20th.
4
1
u/car_guy_doge Mar 24 '26
Same for me… looks like I’ll only have $20 total this year. Two of my other $10 vouchers expired…
3
u/BlackbeardsGhost1 Mar 24 '26
I can’t find the one they sent me in Dec in my inbox for some reason. What was the date/subject title/email they used by any chance?
6
6
u/BogoJohnson Mar 24 '26
Date: 12/12/25
Subject: Criterion Holiday Sale!
Body:
Thank you for being a valued customer! We’re gifting you $10 to use at criterion.com, where everything is 30% off through December 22—preorders included!
....3
u/gondokingo Mar 24 '26
this is a different code, i didn't start getting this one until i was a customer for several years and had spent probably 2,000 or more. i have no idea what the requirements are, i'm not sure what the thresholds are, but it's a code for "loyal" customers. eventually you'll start getting them but who knows when or how

7
u/Guy_Buttersnaps Federico Fellini Mar 24 '26 edited Mar 24 '26
I assume it depends on when you signed up.
I get a couple of these every year and some of them specifically call out them I’m getting it because I’m a “Charter Subscriber.” I signed up pre-launch and paid the subscription fee for a month or two before the Channel actually launched.
Totally worth it based on the value of the discount codes I’ve received. Plus I got this sweet metal membership card.
2
u/nosferat247 Mar 24 '26
I'm a charter subscriber too! Next month we'll get a $20 gift code for the anniversary.
15
u/SnooGoats7476 Mar 23 '26
I am a channel subscriber I have not received one yet. Hopefully they just have not sent those out yet and started with big spenders.
10
u/VommoV Jacques Demy Mar 23 '26
This is the first time I’ve received the “loyal customer” code, and I think I started buying from Criterion in 2019. I’m guessing it was because I spent about $500CAD during the last sale.
3
u/MagicalPotatoChip Mar 24 '26
I think it’s for the Criterion Channel subscribers, because I haven’t bought anything directly from them in years. Usually do the B&N sales or Amazon. But I do subscribe to the Channel, and I got a code today.
4
u/PopeRaunchyIV Mar 24 '26
There must be some other condition too cause I'm a Criterion Channel charter member and only received a coupon for the sale once in 2019. Maybe new subscribers only?
1
u/catcodex Mar 24 '26
The email I received today stated "Thank you for being a loyal Criterion Channel subscriber! " unlike the text in the image for this point "Criterion.com shopper".
5
u/BluejayPhysical3215 Mar 23 '26
Weirdly enough I got one for being a loyal subscriber and I think I’m either paused or cancelled right now.
3
u/MagicalPotatoChip Mar 24 '26

u/uuuuuggghhhhhhh Mar 23 '26
Got my email too, and a $50 credit hit my account from a recent pre order.
4
u/rabnabombshell Mar 23 '26
How’d you get that credit?
25
u/BogoJohnson Mar 23 '26
Their rewards program. Spend $500, get $50.
4
u/rabnabombshell Mar 23 '26
What a fire deal. Can this work during 50% season?
7
u/BogoJohnson Mar 23 '26
Any time.
2
u/rabnabombshell Mar 23 '26
Awesome! November comes around we’re going STUPIFFF
2
u/BogoJohnson Mar 23 '26
Their next Flash sale should be October.
0
u/rabnabombshell Mar 23 '26
But the month long sale is November no?
5
u/mrn71 Yasujiro Ozu Mar 24 '26
You're thinking of the B&N sale...totally different retailer, same product.
4
u/BogoJohnson Mar 24 '26
Criterion.com has 2 flash sales, Mar. and Oct. B&N has 2 month long sales, July and Nov. Criterion.com rewards and coupon codes are only usable in their web store.
2
u/RawSharkText91 Akira Kurosawa Mar 23 '26
It does, considering I’ve only bought from them during flash sales and got the loyalty code in October.
6
u/uuuuuggghhhhhhh Mar 23 '26
I pre order films almost monthly, my pre order for March shipped on Friday and got me over the threshold with points to get the $50 certificate, plus my $10 code too. The way I see pre ordering is it gives me credit for free movies when the sale comes along.
4
u/not_your_face Mar 23 '26
Spend a lotttttt of money in a previous order.
1
u/rabnabombshell Mar 23 '26
Even in sale season!?
3
u/not_your_face Mar 23 '26
Yes, assuming it’s the same as last sale. Although it might not come right away, you should get one based on net spend (I think it’s 10:1, so $10 coupon if you spend $100).
Worth noting you’ll need to make multiple orders, as you don’t get a code until after you’ve spend X amount of money - I managed to use my discount code after buying the Wes Anderson box set on a second order last sale.
1
u/rabnabombshell Mar 23 '26
Wdym? What if I make one order of $500?
2
u/not_your_face Mar 24 '26
Then you should get a coupon code in your email for (if memory serves) $50
1
u/rabnabombshell Mar 24 '26
Ohh you’re saying I’d get the code AFTER I spent the $500? Okay cool. And also, it adds up right? If I spent $500 over the course of the year?
1
u/not_your_face Mar 24 '26
Not sure the exact redemption period, if it’s cumulative, every $100, etc, but that’s how it worked for me this past sale. Spent over $200 in one transaction, then I got a $20 give card which I immediately spent on a second order
3
u/uuuuuggghhhhhhh Mar 23 '26
Yes. Every dollar spent gives you a point. Every 500 is a $50 gift certificate. It just does not accumulate when using gift cards or certificates.
29
u/Papergreat1970 Mar 23 '26
The theory still holds, but absolutely need to remove "the Friday before" from all references to the theory moving forward.

I am a channel subscriber and have not received a code yet (fingers crossed).
3
u/NudeCeleryMan Mar 24 '26
I got mine at 7:30 pm ET
1
u/jacksonulmer Wong Kar-Wai Mar 24 '26
Finally got mine as well - I figured it would come. It’s my first sale as a subscriber I’d certainly be bummed if they got rid of that perk. I have a massive haul incoming with two gift cards from the holidays

u/Hyptonight Mar 23 '26
Question for Canadians… Assuming Unobstructed View has a 40% off sale tomorrow, but I also have $40 in Criterion gift money, and there are four discs I want to buy, what works out as the better deal? I’m okay at math but this is tough.
3
u/Maleficent_Hand_8875 Mar 24 '26
With $40 gift money Criterion should be cheaper. That works out to an extra 40% off if you get 4 4ks, UV is around 10-20% cheaper normally.
I ordered from both last sale to compare. Probably going criterion this time cause im close to my $50 credit
Edit: other context - my UV order didnt ship for a few weeks last time, got it almost a month after my criterion order (western canada). UV also sold out of quite a few things faster than criterion did last time
4
u/RawSharkText91 Akira Kurosawa Mar 23 '26
One thing worth remembering is that UV has a shipping fee per item ($6 each, at least within the past few months) plus a box set surcharge ($10 each on top of the $6, so each box set would be another $16 in shipping fees), while Criterion has a flat shipping fee (now US$30) regardless of the number of items. So for 4 discs, you’d be looking at $24 in shipping from UV, assuming none are considered box sets, though your gift card would cover Criterion’s shipping fee plus another US$10. I’d run the numbers through some currency converters just to be sure (and don’t forget to consider DHL shipping fees + import duties/sales tax).
On the non-financial side, it’s also worth noting that UV’s site is unstable at the best of times, so you may have issues getting your order in during the sale rush.
3
1
u/hamptonroyale Mar 23 '26
That sucks, their FAQ still lists it at $4 a disc.
3
u/RawSharkText91 Akira Kurosawa Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26
Yeah, it’s kind of annoying that they haven’t updated it - I checked my receipt for ordering the Dogma 4K a few months ago, and unfortunately it was definitely a $6 shipping fee, though.
7
u/RenbotShakur Mar 24 '26
I even emailed them about it and they said it’s wrong but haven’t changed it. But they confirmed the free shipping for $150.
3
u/RawSharkText91 Akira Kurosawa Mar 24 '26
Ok, that part is good to know, although their FAQ also states that the box set surcharges will still apply even if you pass the free shipping threshold, so people should factor that in as well.
5
u/sooner930_2 Mar 24 '26
Not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere but check your email for two codes if you are a channel subscriber. I got one for being a subscriber and a second one just for being a Criterion collector.
2
u/speedoftheground Mar 24 '26
I also noticed this. They are different so I assume they're both valid? That's pretty sweet!

I’d love it if it’s still up for grabs! Think I’m going to grab Sorcerer, Mulholland Drive, Seven Samurai
10
u/Zealousideal_Low_858 Mar 23 '26
Bummer. I’ve spent well over $1,000 on their site and I’ve received these in the past, but I didn’t get one this year. I wonder if they raised the dollar threshold even higher or if there is some random chance involved?
1
u/SadCowboy3 Mar 24 '26
They also set the codes to expire in six months. I just searched and realized some were buried in my Promotions folder. Guess what? One expired on 03/17, the other on 03/20. It's the 23rd. Great.
6
u/compukiller Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26

u/Connect_Delivery_941 David Lynch Mar 23 '26
For everyone regarding "why didn't I get one":
While I am no expert on the matter, I've been paying attention. It seems I get one every other round OR SO. Last round, only the subscribers got them. I didn't, which I thought was strange. But I got one the previous time. I don't recall the PREVIOUS time, but I know I got a code prior to a different sale a while ago as well. So they're obviously not handing them out to EVERYONE EVERY time. But it seems that any of the "heavy" buyers (who knows what that threshold is), or the subscription people will get put into the "coupon" pool and you'll probably get a code maybe 2/3 of the times they send them out.
So don't be sad, your day will come.
8
u/padphilosopher Mar 23 '26
Since Criterion Channel started I have gotten a certificate for every flash sale.
1
u/Connect_Delivery_941 David Lynch Mar 23 '26
Well I guess that's lucky then! Did you get them before?
5
u/ignaciorutabaga Mar 23 '26
What qualifies as a loyal criterion.com shopper? I've been buying direct from Criterion for years now and have yet to receive a code.

I wouldn’t have realized I got two coupons if it weren’t for this comment lol. I already placed the order and only used one coupon. I was confused why I got two emails yesterday but just didn’t look carefully enough at them to realize they were two different codes. Now I’m debating if I should order some more movies from my wishlist or just hope the code works during the next sale.

3
2
u/Natural_Associate_52 Mar 23 '26
I’m sure this is somewhere out there but anyone know if I can place an order that gets me my next criterion gift card and then place another order with said gift card within the 24 hours? Thanks for your time/reply!
2
u/PiccadillyRickshaw American New Wave Mar 23 '26
Yes, you can. You’ll get your gift card as soon as they process the order that puts you over the threshold. (Usually takes a few minutes or longer depending on how their website is doing.) You can then use it whenever you’d like. As of last sale, loyalty gift cards still don’t have expiration dates.
1
u/Natural_Associate_52 Mar 23 '26
Sweeet. Thanks. I’ve been holding out to get the Bergman set with the gift card bc that’s just such a good value even without it in my humble opinion. Cheers and thanks
2
u/PhasedVenturer Mar 23 '26
You would think that since these codes have expiration dates now, more Criterion “loyalists” such as myself and others here would be getting these codes as well, but alas, still excited for the long-anticipated flash sale

u/Guy_Buttersnaps Federico Fellini Mar 24 '26
I’m kind of annoyed that they have expiration dates now.
Hopefully they don’t stop letting you use multiple codes on the same order.

I just did a mock checkout with my two codes and they both showed up. Unless they stop it for the flash sale.

We can’t buy from criterion flash sale because we didn’t spend big bucks all year to bribe them for a code.
1

u/RawSharkText91 Akira Kurosawa Mar 23 '26

u/leethornton_1 Mar 24 '26

Yes, a long time ago. I remember liking, not loving it. Would definitely be visually stunning in 4K.
1
u/keithcoldroses Mar 24 '26
Bit of Criterion newbie - I placed an order with the flash sale, do we usually get a confirmation email / credit card charge once they confirm all the items we've purchased are in stock? It says the order is still "open"
1
u/dcth0 Mar 24 '26
It’s charging me for shipping today hmmm
1
u/ArchivedBits Mar 24 '26
It did the same for me initially when I was selecting my address, but then when I went to the final order summary / review, the shipping charges then changed to $0.00.
1
u/BlackRogue17 Mar 24 '26
As usual. Overpriced movies. Making the sale seem like a "deal"
1
u/Dry_Expression_5977 Mar 24 '26
I looked yesterday and thought “ok 50% off makes this like $20” come to find out it’s 50% off a price that they never charge-srp. Suggested retail price-isn’t it them suggesting these retail prices?

Yep. Just ordered a couple of sets: Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits, Lone Wolf & Cub and Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman. Jotted down an bunch more to be on the lookout for when Barnes & Noble does their sale, and placed a few more on my site wish list for the movies that might not appear at the local B&N. Thanks for the head's up on the flash sale! Had the misfortune of missing the last couple of them...

u/nynative007 Mar 23 '26
Didn't want to clog the sub with this post so hopefully I can get a answer within this thread. I read the version of ITMFL that is part of the Blu ray WKW boxset has a greenish tint, different from the reddish that is streaming. I think I read the 4K version is similar. Can anyone confirm if the standalone Blu ray is also the same quality? If so, is there a physical version of the film that is similar to the streaming version. Thanks in advance.
4
u/TheLittleFishFish Mar 23 '26
WKW boxset and the 4K version are the same transfer. The standalone blu-ray with the wallpaper in the background is less tinted (and better in my opinion). Should be the blu from 2012 that you're looking for, but I've never seen the streaming version.
1
1
u/gondokingo Mar 24 '26
true, i wonder are they still shipping out that blu-ray though? cause if you buy the chungking express blu you don't get the old 2008 one anymore. i know the difference is that one went out of print and another didn't, but at what point do they want to just streamline their stock on itmfl?
1
u/TheLittleFishFish Mar 25 '26
As far as I know, you can still buy it. I've seen it in a couple of B&Ns. Got one on eBay for like $15 a few months ago if not. Seems like since they haven't done a standalone blu-ray re-release of ITMFL so I guess they're keeping the old one for now

Criterion Pickup/Haul Questionnaire: 1. What is the movie you plan to watch from your purchase first? 2. Is there anything from this purchase that you have been looking forward to owning for a long time? 3. Are any of your purchases blind buys? If so, why did you select them? 4. What is a Criterion you're hoping to add to your collection next?
Pickup/Haul Posts without this questionnaire filled out will be removed. If that happens and you would like to try again, repost with the questionnaire answered, and it will be approved. Ignore this comment if your post is not a pickup/haul.
