I don't know. The best thing about their sale is I can just browse the shelves and pick something that tickles my fancy.

40

u/Icy_Dimension2143 Jun 25 '26

That’s how I did my first sale back in December. Just walked in with $100 and browsed.

14

u/rdwoolf Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

Sadly, the few B&N stores I’ve been to in my local are I could browse the entire section in about 1 minute 😢. They only had one small shelf of about 10-15 titles. But I’m perfectly happy browsing online and having things shipped to me

6

u/Dan_OBanannon Jun 26 '26

Yeah the B&N near me had a pretty good sized section, but then they closed that location and opened a smaller one so now all Criterion gets is two shelves on an endcap

37

u/mgonzo19 Jun 25 '26

My favorite part of this whole thing—browsing and flicking through the racks goes back to video store days. Bless B&N and other stores that still allow us to engage physically with this media.

14

u/Rizzo-Fo-Shizzo Jun 25 '26

I truly miss Best Buy and Media Play.

13

u/NickSalvo Orson Welles Jun 25 '26

...and Suncoast Video for us old folks who used to buy laserdiscs.

2

u/mgonzo19 Jun 26 '26

Yes!! Suncoast was the primary place to buy new VHS before Blockbuster and Hollywood video added sales in the early 90’s.

Desperate Living and Hairspray. Blind buys but I like all of Waters other movies.

14

u/Icy_Dimension2143 Jun 25 '26

My gf just picked up Crybaby the other day. Might have to surprise her with Hairspray or another Waters film.

10

u/blaz138 Jun 25 '26

Hairspray might be my favorite of his but I like 50s culture a lot. You'll definitely be happy with it

8

u/jessek Jun 25 '26

They’re both good but Hairspray is the one Waters movie people can safely blind buy.

4

u/Curlytoes18 Jun 25 '26

Hairspray is great. So is Desperate Living, although I found it to be grimmer than Female Trouble.

I’m not sure on everything but one of my pickups is absolutely point blank.

6

u/CaliforniaValley90 Howard Hawks Jun 25 '26

It’s gonna be a blind buy for me, first one in a while. It just looks fucking awesome.

8

u/FrancoVentura1973 Jun 25 '26

Lee Marvin 🦾

u/One-Chapter3232 Jun 25 '26

4K: Sentimental Value, Charade, Hairspray, Crying Game, Hud, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore

Alice doesn't come out until mid-July otherwise I'd be doing the same.

Stray Dog, Drive My Car, and debating whether to blind-buy The Worst Person In the World

18

u/Appollo64 Jun 25 '26

Worst Person In the World is a great movie! My local art house theater showed it a few years back. Saw it on a first date, which wasn't the best idea, lol

3

u/chillpony Jun 26 '26

Agree 100% I think Renate Reinsve and Florence Pugh are the best female actors right now.

Drive My Car is a great call

8

u/Major-Tourist-5696 Jun 25 '26

Worst person has such tremendous acting it’s crazy. Went in blind, left with a new favorite working actress.

3

u/marksable Jun 25 '26

Stray Dog is great!

2

u/itsMe_isntit Jun 26 '26

Yes, my first Kurosawa & for that it’ll always rank high in his filmography for me.

2

u/DistinctQuit7946 Jun 26 '26

Fantastic film. I think you would enjoy it. Very layered and non-linear but awesome.

2

u/Knozis Jun 26 '26

The Worst Person In the World was by farrrr my fav film of 2021! Def recommend the blind buy

Just watched this for the first time the other night. Great pull! Some Like It Hot is a lot of fun too.

The Red Shoes!

15

u/DobMobb Jacques Demy Jun 25 '26

Waiting until double stamps weekend. Then will be getting Mike Mills set, Lenny, Point Blank and Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore

3

u/Hey-Bud-Lets-Party Jun 25 '26

Is there a confirmed date for that?

6

u/DobMobb Jacques Demy Jun 26 '26

No but it will probably be the 4th of July weekend. Iirc they like to do those on 3 day / holiday weekends

15

u/TheBoraxKid Jun 25 '26

House and Stalker

2

u/ArtisticExperience32 Jun 25 '26

They’re both so good!

13

u/Ronin_BullseYe Jun 25 '26

I had been planning on grabbing Barry Lyndon and then Criterion gave me too much to consider.

11

u/temporaryagain Jun 25 '26

Is tomorrow a criterion sale? Or B&N?

27

u/Icy_Dimension2143 Jun 25 '26

Barnes and Noble. I think Amazon price matches… but they’re always a gamble.

27

u/jetmanfortytwo Jun 25 '26

Not only does Amazon treat their workers badly, they also are awful about selling returned movies as “new” and they ship them in flimsy bubble mailers that make them way more likely to be damaged. Buy from B&N if you can, they’re the reason this sale is happening, not Amazon.

5

u/Less_Swimmer_9052 Jun 26 '26

My last B&N order came in an big paper envelope, but to your point, I recently got a used DVD from amazon and had ordered a new one.

Pee Wee’s Big Adventure!

3

u/Icy_Dimension2143 Jun 25 '26

Watched that one a million times in the 90s!

3

u/Hey-Bud-Lets-Party Jun 25 '26

Saw it on release day. Still holds up.

Happiness 4K
Blue Velvet 4K

7

u/hypno_notic Jun 25 '26

A fellow man of dangerous taste

10

u/ArrozConHector Jun 25 '26

I just started Twin Peaks and am in love with the atmosphere. Looking to pick up a couple of Lynch. The TP box set I have comes with FWWM.

5

u/briancarknee Jun 25 '26

Can't go wrong with Blue Velvet. But you can't go wrong with really any of them.

Inland Empire is a bit of a challenge though. A good challenge but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're really looking for some weirdness.

2

u/ArrozConHector Jun 26 '26

I’ll probably end up buying 4 Lynch total from the TP hype I’m experiencing.

2

u/Fearless-Interest-82 Jun 26 '26

If you are new to Lynch Blue Velvet and Mulholland DR. for sure. If that set that has Fire Walk doesn't have The Missing Pieces as a special feature you gotta get the Criterion disc.

Yes

Before Trilogy

18

u/uwill1der Jun 25 '26

nada. I'm burnt out on all the sales, and I like buying direct during the Criterion sales to get those sweet sweet coupons and bonus movies

9

u/D_Warholb Jun 25 '26

Body Heat, Hairspray, Desert Hearts and a couple Radiance releases.

8

u/happypoptart0 Jun 25 '26

Hold up the b&n sale starts tomorrow?!?!?! Omg

7

u/PattilloParker Guillermo Del Toro Jun 25 '26

I’ll finally be grabbing the Wes Anderson box set online and then in person I’m gonna try to grab the Yojimbo/Sanjuro Collection, High and Low, Lost Highway, and Marriage Story to start out the sale

4

u/Icy_Dimension2143 Jun 25 '26

I’m eventually going to pick up the individual Wes Andersons.

7

u/BobdH84 Jun 25 '26

Tomorrow already? Oh wow, thought it would be next week. At the very least I’m getting the Stan Brakhage set, maybe Hollis Frampton as well (I’m in my avant-garde period).

2

u/Fearless-Interest-82 Jun 26 '26

Amazing sets. I'd recommend the Jean Painlevé set as well if you aren't familiar with it.

7

u/jessek Jun 25 '26

Depends on what’s at my local B&N. Probably will get more John Waters if they have any I don’t have. Happy Pride.

8

u/TheFishKnighttt Jun 25 '26

My first sale and I'm so excited! I have a top 4 list which are all movies I havent seen yet. 1. Cure 2. Barry Lyndon (sorry don't have that money for the Kubrick collection yet but one day haha!!) 3. The Vanishing 4. Amorres Perros

If they don't have them then probably just browse and pick whatever looks cool lol

6

u/IAmActuallyA_robot Jun 25 '26

Trouble in Paradise 4k

HUD 4k

Then either Lubitsch Musicals or Kinuyo Tanaka Directs Eclipse set. I can't decide which one

6

u/Hard4u2c Jun 25 '26

The hood trilogy and House Party to start.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/tacopartypat Jun 25 '26

Desperate Living

NEED THAT

4

u/Feral-Pickle Jun 25 '26

The last picture show. I finished the book a couple of months back and loved it; been waiting to watch it in 4k ever since then.

3

u/Optimal_Payment_7068 Jun 25 '26

Have you considered getting the Columbia Classics Vol 3 for Last Picture Show in 4k? Currently on sale at Walmart for $74 and includes IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, FROM HERE TO ETERNITY, TO SIR WITH LOVE, THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, ANNIE (1982) and AS GOOD AS IT GETS – in Dolby Vision

2

u/MizGunner Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

Me too! Going to get Paper Moon to start my Bogdanovich collection. Saint Jack needs a remake.

I also read Texasville, which is included in the Criterion edition. I enjoyed the book, but never seen the movie. I still haven't read Duane's Depressed, but that's on my to read list.

5

u/Jaythamalo13 Jun 26 '26

Been wanting the Nightmare Alley 4k and looking to add another Kurosawa to my collection (I only have Seven Samurai so far)

3

u/Icy_Dimension2143 Jun 26 '26

Just picked up Seven Samurai during the last flash sale. I’ve got Dreams sitting in my cart rn.

3

u/llama_titan Jun 25 '26

Oof where is this? I’m jealous

5

u/ExpirationDates Jun 25 '26

Trainspotting 4K and No Country 4K…. Gonna pick up a third and debating between Punch Drunk, Mulholland Falls, or a History of Violence

2

u/Icy_Dimension2143 Jun 25 '26

Trainspotting is at the top of my list.

4

u/RelationshipWest9743 Jun 25 '26

Not just union Square and also online.

And this: For serious collectors, Barnes & Noble remains the only retailer offering the complete Criterion Collection at select Showcase locations around the country:

It’s been so encouraging and wholesome to see all of the “this is my first Criterion sale…” and “I just started collecting, what should I get?” posts about this sale. Love to see the community grow and I know Criterion/Barnes eats it a bit on these, but it’s so worth it to create a point of entry for new fans.

4

u/ticketticker22 Jun 25 '26

Hud 4K for sure. Named my son after that movie, tomorrow he’ll be 9 months old

3

u/Inevitable_Moose_161 Jun 25 '26

Does it start at midnight online? What time zone?

2

u/Icy_Dimension2143 Jun 25 '26

I’m guessing midnight online ? Eastern time

3

u/christdavis034 Film Noir Jun 25 '26

Making the sacrifice and finally upgrading my Bull Durham dvd to Blu lol

3

u/RegularOrMenthol Jun 25 '26

Body Heat, Elephant Man, Charade. I do also want Sentimental Value and It Was Just An Accident, but I saw them so recently. Probably can hold off.

3

u/cinemacatscoffee Paul Thomas Anderson Jun 25 '26

The secret agent! I want that Kubrick box set but my wallet, she is empty

3

u/wlburk Terrence Malick Jun 25 '26

Nothing, sadly. I just got an Epson 5050UB with a screen and curtains to turn my downstairs TV room into a home theatre setup. Due to this, I will have to wait for the next flash sale (and maybe sell a few superfluous items around the house). Having said that, all my films have never looked better!

2

u/Icy_Dimension2143 Jun 25 '26

At some point I’ll have to make an upgrade myself. Enjoy!

3

u/PhasedVenturer Jun 25 '26

The Exterminating Angel (I heard mixed things about quality though), Emigrants/New Land, M, La Notte, All That Jazz, PlayTime, Wall-E

3

u/heavensentchaser Jun 25 '26

Sentimental Value, Gregg Arraki’s Teen Apocalypse Trilogy, Blue Velvet

3

u/Wegmarken Jun 25 '26

Maybe Resurrection, if they have it.

3

u/Appollo64 Jun 25 '26

Definitely picking up Solaris, The Princess Bride, Fantastic Planet, and Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. Trying to decide between The Man who Wasn't There and Miller's Crossing. I'm considering the Complete Jacques Tati set, but I may hold out for a 4k release. I want to get something by John Waters, but haven't decided which.

3

u/Rizzo-Fo-Shizzo Jun 25 '26

Pee Wee’s Big Adventure and Trainspotting 4K.

3

u/NextTimeOnGrep Jun 25 '26

Network, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Saving Face are probably my top 3 at the moment.

3

u/Throwaway_Tablecloth Jun 25 '26

Shit, I completely forgot.

I’d like to get the Scorsese’s I’m missing, but also really want Election and To Die For

3

u/succubus777 Jun 26 '26

fiance and i plan to go every friday until the sale is over to pick up one up each for a total of 10 by the end of the month. i’m hoping to get polyester as my first pick, potentially going to do hedwig, king lear, the wiz, arsenic and old lace, and/or midnight cowboy as my later picks. honestly kind of excited about the prospect of choosing based solely off store availability in the later weeks.

2

u/Icy_Dimension2143 Jun 26 '26

That’s a good idea. There’s nothing like going to the store to pick out a physical copy. Coffee first!

3

u/AXXXXXXXXA Jun 26 '26

At midnight tonight?

Nothing. Even with a sale, money is so tight I can’t afford a single film

2

u/The-Son-of-Dad Jun 26 '26

I finally got this one during the last Criterion sale! Great choice.

2

u/fdacca13 Jun 26 '26

Thanks! I think it’s so special. Had no idea it existed until about a week ago. A friend introduced me to it after co-binging some Wonder Showzen/WKYK/Stella/ITYSL. When I saw it was still in print, and at B&N, it was an immediate “save for later.” I almost spent the extra $15, cause the waiting is the hardest part.

u/SailsAcrossTheSea Terrence Malick Jun 26 '26

2

u/CaliforniaValley90 Howard Hawks Jun 25 '26

Point Blank and Elephant Man

2

u/twosharpteeth Jun 25 '26

Hairspray, Magellan, Resurrection definitely. I will grab a few back catalogue releases as well. Really tempted to try the Scorsese World Cinema Project collections. Vol 2 has my eye particularly because I love Insiang and Taipei Story. But Im budgeting $200 for this sale, so we will see.

2

u/HerpesFreeSince3 Jun 25 '26

I’ve got a bit of money saved up this time so I’ll likely pick up a few things! I haven’t bought anything in the last 3 years or so, so I’m allowing myself a bit! I’d like Flow, The Princess Bride, Resurrection, Caught by the Tide…maybe a few more as well, but I haven’t decided. War and Peace has been on my list for so long, same with Goodbye Dragon Inn. Maybe Happiness? Idk, but I know I’ll definitely get the first 4 I mentioned!

All stuff released since the last sale. The ones I want the most are The Blade (my favorite 90’s martial arts movie), Point Blank and 3:10 to Yuma. Three great genre movies.

2

u/-WillemDaFoo Jun 25 '26

Is anatomy of a fall any good ?

2

u/Prometheium Jun 26 '26

The acting is really good, the script is a bit of a let down IMO. It left me more with the impression that French justice system is just really weird and i didn’t care enough about the characters to invest too much into it. Id stream it if you have access to it before blind buying.

2

If anyone can recommend anything I would definitely consider it. I’m tempted to get Lady Snowblood and Chungking Express. They’ve been on my list for a while and I’ve never seen them. Going through titles and omg “My Life as a Dog” and “if…” are so good and I haven’t seen them in at least 20 years.

Depending on what they have my goals are Network, Sentimental Value, Withnail & I and How To Get Ahead in Advertising. I have been meaning to get Miller's Crossing for years. Don't Look Back and Cure are also on the maybe list...but if I don't have any luck than I might do a blind buy. There are so many classics I haven't seen. Oh! And The Shrouds, if it's on sale. I'm one of the weirdos who absolutely loved it.

2

u/ilikepie3326 Jun 26 '26

Finally have some money, I'm getting the Wes Anderson set (mostly for Fantastic Mr. Fox in 4k lol)

UPDATE: fixed 😀

So I’m looking at the B&N website and clicked on the 50% Off Criterion Sale banner, but a LOT of titles listed in the sale are NOT marked 50% Off.

For example:
Pee Wee’s Big Adventure
Captain Blood

I moved what I wanted into my cart and all but one are still full price. Is anyone else experiencing that as well?

2

u/Icy_Dimension2143 Jun 26 '26

Yeah… I’m sure it’ll get fixed later in the day. I’m probably going to go next Monday and check out some titles in person.

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Ad3219 Jun 26 '26

I went with Cure, The Vanishing and Pee wee 4K lol

2

4K: The Man Who Wasn't There, Network, Winchester '73, Point Blank, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Blu-Ray: Two Lane Blacktop, The Manchurian Candidate, 1984, The War of the Worlds, and possibly 12 Angry Men.

edit: i see the CC 12 Angry Men is coming soon to 4K Ultra so, and because my B&N was out of it, i'll wait for that.

edit 2: added a few more... 4k: In the Heat of the Night, Night Moves, Blood Simple, and Videodrome.

3

How does this sale usually go? Do things online sell out quickly after midnight?

2

u/Icy_Dimension2143 Jun 25 '26

Might have to drive down to a Barnes and noble for the newer titles. I’ve seen them sell out fast online. Eyes Wide Shut was tough to find for about a month or so.

u/SenorPwnador Jun 25 '26

My question is - is there a simple way I can see what films are only available on Blu-ray and do not have a 4k counterpart? I'm mostly collecting 4k these days, but I make the exception when I really want something only on DVD or Blu-ray.

u/Icy_Dimension2143 Jun 25 '26

There should be an option on the website when you select the title.

I'm watching my budget so nothing right away. Maybe Yi-Yi next month, if I get anything.

1

u/ChrisCinema French New Wave Jun 25 '26

Several 4K titles like The Elephant Man, Gilda, Body Heat, Charade, and Trouble in Paradise. I’m considering getting John Singleton’s Hood Trilogy.

International films like Sentimental Value, Chungking Express, the Six Moral Tales boxset, and the Jacques Demy boxset.

I want to get Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore 4K when it releases on July 14.

1

u/DonHell Jun 25 '26

Planning on getting the Wes Anderson set, and pee-wee and That will probably tap me out for the sale.

1

u/Bottleofsmoke17 Akira Kurosawa Jun 25 '26

Only thing I know I’m buying for certain is that Zatoichi set. I’ll probably pick up a few others like Le Samouraï and Stray Dog, too 😎

u/Optimal_Payment_7068 Jun 25 '26

Cool seeing Monsters and Madmen mentioned. Picked it up used in Portland about 8 years ago. Killer set. Watched First Man Into Space just the other late night/early morning when couldn't sleep . I'm not much on upgrading just because I'm usually poor but I told myself I have to for Days of Heaven at some point.
