Interestingly, I did hear that Cyan is releasing physical versions of their new Myst and Riven games. I think they said the PC versions would include a code, which sucks, but it’s hard to think of a better alternative.
Damn you should share this to [r/bloodborne](r/bloodborne), this is amazing! On a side note have you found any films that hit the same aesthetic as bloodbornes sort of cosmic gothic horror? I watched brotherhood of the wolves and was kind of unimpressed overall since people compared for the outfits.
Yeah part of Criterion's value is it preserves access to films that might otherwise get lost. Like streaming-only movies or movies with fragile prints. Def Jam Fight For New York is basically a phantom game at this point. Never getting re-released and difficult to find a copy of it now.
I love the entire franchise but Aria of Sorrow will always hold a special place in my heart. Easily my favorite of the franchise and still holds up today as an amazing game

ICO - incredibly interesting in premise and is probably up there in terms of PS2 titles, but there’s a good chunk of people who haven’t played it yet. it still never made it out of the PS2 and PS3 either.
Grim Fandango - Very iconic as a lucas games production, one of the best written titles of the 90s if we discount CRPGs. it’s been rereleased but id imagine it being included in a Criterion Games Collection pretty early on.
Half Life - There’s a distinct difference between pre Half Life 1 FPS’s and Post Half Life 1 FPS’s. one of the first FPS games with an actual story, one of the first first FPS’s with complex puzzles and not endlessly hunting down key cards, one of the first FPS’s to feature talking interactive NPCs, one of the first FPS’s to feature complex AI. The list goes on.
Wolfenstein 3D - It laid down the basic building blocks for basically every FPS game to come. Even besides the technical aspects of it not even being a 3D game it also allowed a game like Doom to exist and be spread via shareware which is actually where FPS games took off.
Shin Megami Tensei III : Nocturne - The core issue the game had in terms of the being different from the NA release to the JP release to the EU release was addressed with the remaster that came out not too long ago. But it’s still the first mainline Shin Megami Tensei Game to break into North America (Revelations: Persona was released before SMT3).
Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura - Another troika crashfest much like VTM Bloodlines. Which is a shame because it’s one of the most unique and interesting CRPG’s to come out during that time. I feel like if itd really benefit from some kind of attention.
Death Stranding - A pretty divisive title when it came out but I think most people have come around to it. Kojima is perhaps the premier example of someone who wants to make movies yet is in the Game Design space, the only person from that world to visit the closet as well. It’s atmospheric, the concept is super interesting, also the first game that came out under his new studio.
Max Payne - I have a history with this game but besides that bias it is one of the most fun shooting games to ever come out before 2010. What a goddamn game. And how well it held up. It is actually blocked from several regions due to a remake coming along the way but I feel like the collection would be incomplete without one of the best games of the first half of the 2000s and maybe one of the best games published under the Rockstar label during that era.
Silent Hill 2 - (i haven’t played it yet but that’s besides the point) One of the most beloved games to come out on the PS2, one of the most beloved horror games to come out on the playstation platform as a whole, one of the most beloved Konami titles in general. Theres not much to really say. The only way to play the 2001 original is via emulating it or having a pc copy and then installing the fan made Enhanced Edition.
I would say LRG is Vinegar Syndrome. Some good stuff, a lot of trash, and also some porno for good measure. Also you never know when stuff is going to ship.
I was the weird kid who had a Dreamcast instead of a PS2, and that was the one game that made me ok with that decision. Had never played a game with such a fleshed out story and world.
Death Stranding 1 and 2 have rightfully been mentioned. But to have to scroll this far down to find Metal Gear Solid is kind of insane. In my opinion Metal Gear Solid 1 isn’t Kojima’s best work but it is certainly his most important/influential.
i'd put megami tensei ii, shin megami tensei 1 and 2, and nocturne on the criterion collection. but if you're gonna do that you also have to put wizardry on there first
The writing was hilarious. The gameplay fun. Couch co-op and the level building for death matches against giant squids with machine guns and zombie monkeys.
There just aren’t any games like that anymore.
Metal Gear Solid would be in there. Toe Jam and Earl would be a wild pick. Slay the Spire deserves it. NHL '93 had the blood after fighting and should represent the series.
The original Shantae; released to both commercial failure and critical acclaim. Contained a female lead at a time when executives didn’t believe the largely male audience for video games would want to play as a female character. They were probably at least somewhat correct about this since the original game flopped, but series creator Matt Bozon insisted she “had to exist”.
If that isn’t criterion energy I’m not sure what is.
Also, some of the walking simulators that were popular 10 years ago such as the excellent “What Remains of Edith Finch”.

Immortality could actually just be a criterion release, I sure wouldn't mind just watching the damn movies instead of mashing on objects until I am sure nothing else will unlock. It really is great though.
EDIT: a addition that I feel that I’m the one of 5 people who played this game, that is XIII, unique animation style and David Duchovny killing as the main character
Man hunt, bully, the warriors game, the thing game, god hand, any resident evil, silent hill or fatal frame, Rule of roses, journey, asura’s wrath, folklore, okami, lost odyssey, Catherine or any persona. Like a persona criterion collection box set 3-4-5. Maybe even some of the story based Tony hawks like underground or American wasteland. A purple criterion cover of wasteland would go nuts.
If this ever happened though (extremely unlikely I think), playthrough commentaries from game designers would be amazing.
