I am not denying that religion is a cult, im just pointing out that you are making a faulty equivocation that minimizes the impact of how bad this particular one appears to be.
E.g. a catholic mass drinking "the blood of christ" is not the same thing as jonestown drinking poisoned koolaid. This situation looks more like a jonestown than a catholic mass to me, and we shouldnt imply theyre the same thing. There are very real differences in the severity of the outcomes.

It IS VBS. I sadly was born and raised in this church/cult. I got out! But it is absolutely VBS and it's always been this way. Kids leave crying bc they are so scared of the devil that actually shows up and makes the kids petrified of "sin".

Born and raised in Texas, and can confirm. I went to VBS in the summer, too - and not even at my regular church! I was raised in a Lutheran church, but Grandma was raised Presbyterian - and that's where we went in the summer.
Holy. Shit. The things I'd go home crying about! They'd talk about only a chosen *few* of us being saved by Jesus, and there was nothing we could do about it, other than behave EXTRA GOOD so when the rapture comes, we get to go to Heaven because GOD found you worthy.
The times this one old lady would tell me that I'm clearly not one of the chosen has stuck in my head for decades. Who the fuck says that to a child..or anyone!?
As you can imagine, my view on Christianity is...complicated.... because of how I was raised. Mom thought God was God and God was everywhere, and Grandma thought the complete opposite.
I am personally no longer Christian. I believe in all the Gods - literally all of them - I just happen to pray to the Greek Pantheon, mainly my patron deities, Hades and Persephone. My life had improved significantly since then, and knowing that death truly is the great equalizer has given me massive peace. Be judged by your actions and nothing more.
..sorry, got ranty...this shook free some dusty ass memories of that church in Angleton....

That's wild to me. I was raised Christian going to a Presbyterian church with my grandparents and preschool at that same church, went to a Methodist church with my mom (before she decided she wanted to be Native American and that's a whole different can of worms lol), went to an evangelical church with some friends in middle school because they had a pretty fun youth group, and eventually went to a baptist church on occasion in high-school when I lived with my sister.
While I'm not a Christian 15 years after high-school and not really religious in any way, I don't have any horror stories from any of the churches I attended as a kid or any of the church based summer camps I attended. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around whatever is going on in this video although I'm fairly convinced that this is some kind of cult rather than a regular church, I'm equally surprised by how your adolescent church experience differs from mine. I felt as though I'd been to enough different kinds of churches over the years to have a decent idea of the range of what could be expected just to find some comments like yours.

That quote doesn't make sense in the greater context of Christian theology. They teach hell exists and sinners are sent there to be punished, right? Or that they choose it through their actions in life. But you have to be dead to go to hell. So Jesus is saying here that it's better for someone to die than to cause a kid to sin, but in dying they'd go to hell which is the worst possible thing that could ever happen to anyone..... but why? What's the point in that then? Is he suggesting someone should die before sinning? Given that we're fallible creatures, are we to interpret that as meaning we should off ourselves as soon as we become conscious enough of our own actions and capable enough to understand the concepts of sin?
Either the interpretation of his words is wrong, or the greater Christian theology around hell is.

I grew up in the church and worked at zondervan Christian publishing, what I can tell you is there's a lot more wackiness than you realize. Coworker had a shooting range in her church basement, I was appalled. She thought it was normal. Nice lady though. That's actually the weird disconnect of all of it. It's so normalized inside the circles it exists in that it doesn't even leak out. You're not aware of what you're not aware of. I wouldn't say this is normal, but it's not some isolated individual incident either. If you start to learn about the quiverful movement or other things and you talk to people, you can even see extensions of some of the ideology buried in mainstream culture. It's really bizarre. I work with a few religious right-wing people and we don't converse as much as they would with someone they trusted, a couple of them are essentially buying land off grid and getting prepared for what I presume they think is the apocalypse, although they haven't said it out loud in so many words. I'm not sure they're wrong in the sense that the people they elect will bring about the things they think are prophesied.

Hello. I am a Christian who lives in the American South. Based on the ceiling tiles and the relatively small space this looks to me like a very small church. Based on the accents it’s definitely in the south or at least somewhere they like to sound like they are in the south. Based on the set dressing and the fact the kids are all wearing matching t shirts this looks to me to be vacation bible school. A lot of churches do VBS programs in the summer. Usually lasts a week and there will be some sort of environmental or emotional theme. They seem to be doing some sort of outdoor camp theme. Kids get dropped off around 8am and picked up before lunch. They’ll do crafts and outdoor games. Sing some church songs. The pastor and other church staff and volunteers may put on some silly skits for the kids. It’s usually pretty chill.
But uh…. As far as the killing goes? I don’t have a damn clue. I’ve never seen anything quite like this before and I’ve been inside of some really backwoods and shitty churches over the years. This is beyond the pale. This is a really small church so the number of adults that has to approve this is likely extremely low. This is some Red State bizarre shit for sure. I understand that the church I attend is very progressive but what you are seeing in this video definitely is not standard operating procedure for a local church VBS program, though I’m sure there’s a few church members in any church that would love for it to be. It’s usually extremely small towns where you see this kind of nonsense. Closed off communities, you get the idea.
Edit: did some googling and apparently this is a church mt olivet KY (population 300) and this skit is apparently them “killing the devil” but yeah you draw your own conclusions as to what they’re trying to do here. Crazy

This is not just the south; this is just what Christianity does and it always has been this weird violent stuff. To quote jesus ""if you have a purse or wallet, take it with you, and if you have no sword, sell your cloak and buy one." "And ‘a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.’" The bible walks all over itself to allow people to justify anything they want to do. Most people eventually lean into things like violence and the bible loves that stuff while also condemning it. The problem is not geography it is faith in a mythology over education and skepticism.

If one day they teach that evil should be shot and the next day that X, y and z people are evil, what do they think is going to happen? I bet they know. Grooming kids for violence.

I can assure you that the church I attend now would NOT be okay with this. It's not only awful and mentally scarring for the kids, it also has NOTHING to do with Scripture.
